Nils Politt takes first professional victory

Every day in the 33rd Deutschland Tour, Team KATUSHA ALPECIN rider Nils Politt showed more strength and determination in earning the win, finally breaking through for his first professional victory in stage 4 on Sunday in Stuttgart. Politt, 24, has been professional since 2013 and welcomes his first victory.
“It’s unbelievable. I really can’t believe it. I think I will have to watch the race again tomorrow and then maybe I can believe it. I was so close to the win in the last two days when I guess I made some small mistakes. But today I waited a little bit longer to go at 200 meters to the finish line. I am really, really happy,” said Nils Politt. His sprint win with a time of 4:49:20 (43.03 km/h) came on the 207.5km stage which began in Lorsch.
Politt’s efforts also earned him second place on the final podium for the general classification, six-seconds behind winner Mohorič Matej (Bahrain Merida Pro Cycling Team), who took second on today’s stage.
Politt is a strong time trialist but has evolved into an all-around rider in the past year, most notably with his fine seventh place finish in this year’s Paris-Roubaix. He also was one of four team riders to finish in the 2018 Tour de France, showing his versatility for both one-day races and the grand tours.
After a 10-year absence the Tour of Germany returned to the race calendar this year. Politt noted earlier in the week he remembers coming to the race as a kid and was honored to be able to finally participate in the race on his home soil.
“It’s so nice to have the Tour of Germany back. I am proud to be on the podium here,“ said Politt.
