Nibali first to recce „a very hard“ Worlds‘ course

Italian National Team riders are the first in Innsbruck to discover the secrets of the Tirolian route. First impressions: “I’ve never seen a Road World Championship route as difficult as this.”

Innsbruck, 23rd March 2018 – The very first favourites of this year’s UCI Men Road World Championships Innsbruck-Tirol came to Austria today to recce the course.

Vincenzo Nibali, fresh winner of Milano-Sanremo last Saturday, has completed two rounds of the Olympia circuit that the riders will face seven times in September, plus ridden twice up the final climb known as „The Hell“.

After the recce he said: „The final climb looked like a mountain bike endurance race, so hard. It will be a difficult race to manage, from power distribution to food, from the technical choices to the choice of athletes for a complete national team. After seeing it on paper I was expecting a hard route but riding it is quite another thing. Many other riders will be as surprised as I was today“.

Riding with his Italian National Teammates Alessandro De Marchi and Franco Pellizotti, Nibali was followed in the team car by Davide Cassani, Italian National Cycling Team Manager, who said after the recce: “I had already seen the course but today both myself and the boys were impressed. There’s an 8km climb to be repeated seven times, plus a final wall with inclinations that peak at 28%: this says everything about the hardness of the route.”

De Marchi said: „On paper, I think this is one of the most difficult World Championship courses; it was a good idea to come here now – a few months before the race – to see and understand what we’re going to find in September…I think Tirol will host us in the best way because this kind of territory is made for events like this one…I expect a lot of people [to spectate] all the week in this beautiful scenery. It’s going to be a great day.“

Pellizotti said: „These World Championships are very difficult…The course is long and tough. To do well here it will be very important to come out of the Vuelta in good condition, both mentally and physically“.

Elia Viviani feiert seinen Olympiasieg in Brasilien

Der 28-jährige Elia Viviani ist der erste Star der 69. Österreich Rundfahrt, die am 2. Juli mit einem Prolog am Grazer Schlossberg startet und am 8. Juli in Wels endet. Der Sky-Profi bekam von seiner Mannschaft die Freigabe für die Österreich Rundfahrt, wo er sich neben Etappensiegen auch den Feinschliff für die von 2. bis 6. August laufenden Europameisterschaften in Herning (Dänemark) holen will.

Viviani: „Ziel Etappensieg“

Over a thousand riders on the gravel road of the Colle delle Finestre – Great success for the second edition of the Gran Fondo

The sportive riders could choose between the medium course (93km and 2,400 metres of total elevation) and the long course (117km and 3,100 metres of total elevation). On the start line was the local Trek-Segafredo pro rider, Fabio Felline.

Sestriere, 24 July 2016 – Great success for the second edition of the Gran Fondo La Marmotte – Sestriere – Colle delle Finestre. More than 1,000 sportive riders from every corner of Italy and 100 more from outside the country (France, Belgium and the Netherlands being the most represented countries) participated, taking the total to 1,109 – more than double the starters of the first edition. Among them were more than 40 women (seven of them non-Italian) starting the race. The fascination of racing over the 2015 Giro d’Italia stage course, won by the Sardinian climber Fabio Aru, on closed roads just like in the major pro races and the gravel roads of the Colle delle Finestre climb – which was prepared to the same specification as for professional events – made the day truly epic. The main change from the 2015 edition was that now the start and finish are in the same location, Sestriere city centre, to facilitate logistic and organisational operations.

Coming fresh from his strong result at the recent Tour of Poland, where he finished second overall in the GC, the local hero, Trek-Segafredo pro rider Fabio Felline took to the start line: “I cycled at a good rhythm in order to prepare myself at best for the next professional races. I chose the long course, but after the finish line I kept riding because I needed to have at least six hours of training. It was very beautiful riding again over the Colle delle Finestre after having faced it last year at the Giro d’Italia with loads of fans on the roads. I feel very good and I would like to thank all my fans and family who have been very close to me in the last few months.”

At the start there where the Italian National Cycling Team Manager at the eve of Rio Olympic Games, Davide Cassani, and the Tuscan rower Lorenzo Carboncini, winner of an Olympic silver medal in Sydney 2000, a World Championships gold medallist and five time silver medallist. Another rider of note was Paolo Bellino, RCS Sport Managing Director, who said at the finish line: “It’s always fantastic riding on this roads and in particular on the Colle delle Finestre. It gives you unique emotions, even if is very challenging physically and mentally riding this Gran Fondo. The joy of saying ‘I did it and I’ve tamed the Colle delle Finestre’ is unbeatable. I would like to thanks all the starters, all the sponsors and all the local authorities involved who were able to support us for the perfect success of the event.”

The Mayor of Sestriere Valter Marin, who was very satisfied for the event, said: ”I would never have expected that the second edition would have doubled the number of riders. I think the course we’ve proposed had all the right features to involve so many cyclists. An event such as this Gran Fondo organised by RCS Sport, the only sportive ride in the western Alps with roads closed to traffic, is the perfect occasion to promote a territory that is unique worldwide. Climbs such the Colle delle Finestre, the Moncenisio, the Colle della Scala and all the others in this area, next to the French borders, have a unique appeal for all cycling aficionados.”

Head of Sport of the Piedmont Region, Giovanni Maria Ferraris, was among the enthusiasts: “On our mountains the emotions never fade. This sportive race confirms the natural vocation toward sport and tourism of our region, showing all the cyclists the places where the cycling champions of yesterday and today faced in many epic battles.”

The winner of the Gran Fondo was for the second year in a row Enrico Zen (Team Beraldo Greenpaper), who crossed the line in 3h45’10“, preceding Daniele Terzi (Stemax Team – 3h48’28“) and Carlo Muraro (Asd Cicli Copparo Liotto – 3h50’55“). Among the women, the winner was Erica Magnaldi (Team De Rosa Santini) who completed the course in 4h17’46“, preceding Tanya Randall (Granbike Velo Club – 4h37’34“) and Valentina Picca (Alpina-Bikecafe – 4h43’50“).

After the Gran Fondo La Marmotte, all the riders were reunited at the Palazzetto dello Sport in Sestriere, where the fun continued with a noisy pasta party, sponsored by Agnesi, made possible by the many volunteers that supported the event, helping on the road and feeding the riders on the course.
