Ein weiterer Tag in Gelb: Pöstlberger verteidigt auch auf der 5. Etappe der Dauphiné die Gesamtführun

Ein weiterer Tag in Gelb für BORA – hansgrohe, allerdings eine herausfordernde Etappe beim Critérium du Dauphiné, auf der im Finale Wind und ein steiler Anstieg nur 10 Kilometer vor dem Ziel in Saint-Vallier wartete. Nach dem ersten Berg setzte sich eine gefährliche 5-Mann-Gruppe mit K. Asgreen, der in der Gesamtwertung nur neun Sekunden hinter Lukas Pöstlberger lag, vom Feld ab. BORA – hansgrohe versuchte das Rennen zu kontrollieren und als der Abstand rund 100 km vor dem Ziel auf unter 40 Sekunden gefallen war, attackierten weitere drei Fahrer, die zur Spitze aufschließen konnten. Aber besonders Gamper, Schwarzmann und Wandahl zeigten heute eine hervorragende Leistung, um den Abstand unter zwei Minuten zu halten, bevor sich auf den letzten 70 Kilometern auch Bahrain an der Nachführarbeit zu beteiligen begann. Schnell wurde die Gruppe nun gestellt, allerdings teilte sich das Feld nun mehrmals in Windstaffeln. Am letzten Anstieg blieb eine größere Gruppe zusammen, in der auch Lukas ohne Probleme mithalten konnte. Am Ende holte G. Thomas den Sieg mit einer späten Attacke, während Lukas Pöstlberger die Gesamtführung einen weiteren Tag verteidigen konnte.

Reaktionen im Ziel
„Der Tag war sehr hart, wie wir das schon erwartet hatten. Am Anfang bin ich selbst ein paarmal mitgesprungen, dann hat Asgreen attackiert und war in der Gruppe. Eigentlich wollten wir für Patrick und ein Etappenergebnis fahren, unsere Jungs haben dann aber einen Wahnsinns Job gemacht, das Rennen unter Kontrolle zu halten. Ich habe mich am Ende gut gefühlt und wollte Patrick unterstützen, das hat aber nicht ganz geklappt in dem technischen Finale. Es fühlt sich großartig an, erneut hier in Gelb zu stehen, aber morgen ist ein Tag für die Gesamtwertung und da werde ich für Patrick und Wilco arbeiten. Ich denke also nicht, dass wir uns morgen wieder auf dem Podium sehen.“ – Lukas Pöstlberger

„Das Gelbe Trikot zu tragen ist eine Ehre, das schenkt man nicht so einfach her. Aber wir wollten es auch nicht um jeden Preis verteidigen. Darum sind wir heute schon früh gefahren, um die Gruppe gar nicht erst richtig wegzulassen. Ab einem gewissen Punkt entstand dann eine Dynamik, die uns in die Hände spielte. Nils, Patrick Gamper, Frederik und Schwarzi haben einen großartigen Job gemacht. Aufgrund unserer Arbeit war am letzten Berg dann eine große Gruppe und wir wollten Patrick die Chance geben, Attacken zu folgen oder es im Sprint zu versuchen. Das hat dann nicht ganz geklappt, aber wir sind in jedem Fall happy. Wir haben weiter Gelb und Patrick und Wilco kamen sicher im Ziel an, also alles gut.“ – Enrico Poitschke, sportlicher Leiter

Thomas bounces back in style

Only 24 hours after a disappointing ITT, Geraint Thomas (Ineos Grenadiers) surprised everyone to snatch the stage win millimetres ahead of Sonny Colbrelli (Bahrain Victorious). The Italian sprinter claims his third place of 2nd in five stages, ahead of Alex Aranburu (Astana-Premier Tech). The peloton celebrated the World Bicycle Day with a full-on battle from the start. Kasper Asgreen (Deceuninck-Quick-Step), 3rd overall, attacked as soon as the flag dropped and the pace was relentless until the finish in Saint-Vallier, where Lukas Pöstlberger (Bora-Hansgrohe) held on to the yellow and blue jersey 1’’ ahead of Alexey Lutsenko (Astana-Premier Tech).
Geraint Thomas claims his first victory in France since the 2018 Tour and moves up to 6th place in the general classification ahead of the three mountain stages capping off this 73rd edition of the Critérium du Dauphiné.

The 141-man peloton leaving Saint-Chamond are in for a demanding start and a full-on battle from km 0. Kasper Asgreen (Deceuninck – Quick-Step), 3rd overall with very consistent results in the first four stages (8th, 4th, 10th and 3rd), wants more: he is the first rider attacking from the bunch, ahead of the cat-3 Côte du Planil.

The Danish winner of the Ronde van Vlaanderen is caught by the bunch, Tim Wellens (Lotto Soudal) sets off to take the 2 KOM points at the summit (km 9.8) and the battle for the break goes on until five attackers get together at km 20: Tim Wellens, Kasper Asgreen, Tsgabu Grmay (BikeExchange), Julien Bernard (Trek-Segafredo) and Cyril Gautier (Bora-Hansgrohe).

With Asgreen threatening the yellow and blue jersey, Lukas Pöstlberger’s Bora-Hansgrohe control the gap around 1’40’’ in the first part of the stage. It’s still enough for Asgreen to grab 3 bonus seconds in the intermediate sprint (km 52.4) but the peloton up the tempo and quickly bring the gap down under one minute.

Trek-Segafredo and Bahrain Victorious get in the mix

Trek-Segafredo enjoy the opportunity to send more men at the front: Jasper Stuyven attacks with Ryan Mullen. Josef Cerny (Deceuninck – Quick-Step) follows their move and the three chasers join the five leaders at km 68. With that support and with a crash in the bunch involving the white jersey Ilan Van Wilder, the gap reaches a maximum of 1’55’’ at the bottom of the third categorised climb of the day, Côte de la Sizeranne (km 94).

Sonny Colbrelli (Bahrain Victorious) sends a teammate at the front to help control the break. The leading group split just ahead of the last 60km. Josef Cerny and Ryan Mullen drop their companions, who don’t work well together and are caught by the bunch with 51km to go. Cerny is the last rider to be reeled in, 43km away from the finish, as Ineos Grenadiers up the ante on wind-exposed roads.

Bystrom and Craddock try, Thomas succeeds
Tension still runs high but the pace slightly drops and Sven Eryk Bystrom (UAE Team Emirates) attacks with 36km to go. He opens a 1’10’’ lead before Bahrain Victorious react. The Norwegian attacker still holds a 55’’ advantage atop the cat-3 Col de Barbe Bleue.
Bystrom is reeled in at the bottom of the last climb of the day, the super steep Côte de Montrebut (1.3km at 12%). Kwiatkowski sets the pace and Lawson Craddock (EF Nippo) accelerates. At the summit (12km to go), he is 10’’ ahead of Quentin Pacher (B&B Hotels p/b KTM) and the peloton is right behind the French puncheur.
Dylan Teuns gives his all for Colbrelli and Craddock is caught with 2.2km to go. But nobody can react to the acceleration from Geraint Thomas in a tight curve with 1km to go. Colbrelli produces an impressive sprint but Thomas holds on to a very narrow lead. The 10 bonus seconds on the line also allow him to move to 6th place overall, 14’’ behind the leader Lukas Pöstlberger.

Key points:

Ø For the 73rd edition of the Critérium du Dauphiné, which starts on Sunday 30 May with the first stage in Issoire, some of the favourites are in the ranks of the Ineos Grenadiers team, which is entering 2018 winner Geraint Thomas, along with Tao Geoghegan Hart and Richie Porte.

Ø The battle for the win in the resort of Les Gets at the end of a confrontation over eight stages promises to be daunting with opponents from Colombia (Miguel Ángel López, Nairo Quintana), Spain (Ion Izagirre, Alejandro Valverde) and France (David Gaudu, Guillaume Martin), all of them able to come from nowhere in the mountains.

The cycling world is not quite the same when Slovenia leaves it for a while. It might have seemed incongruous two years ago, but it is obvious when you realise that the winners of the last two Grand Tours have chosen unusual routes to prepare for the race of all races, the Tour de France. As mountains and pelotons hate emptiness, there will be several contenders for the title in the final weekend, first in Le Sappey-en-Chartreuse and then in La Plagne and Les Gets. The 2021 entry list shows that the Ineos Grenadiers team intends to get this race that it last won in 2018. That summer, Geraint Thomas won both the Dauphiné and the Tour. The recent winner of the Tour de Romandie comes into this year’s edition with the same desire as his teammates, Tao Geoghegan Hart and Richie Porte.

The strong position of the dark blue jerseys on the start line should not stifle the temperament of their rivals, on the contrary. A lot of attention will also be paid to the Spanish-speaking riders, whether they come from Colombia like Miguel Ángel López and Nairo Quintana or from Spain like Ion Izagirre, Enric Mas, the indestructible Alejandro Valverde and up and comer Alex Arranburu. The context is also favourable for the breakthrough of a star in the making, like the Americans Brandon McNulty and Sepp Kuss, winner of the last stage in Megève in 2020. The French clan can’t be overlooked either: David Gaudu was on top form in the Tour of the Basque Country as well as in his Ardennes campaign, Guillaume Martin’s regularity paid off with the win in the Mercantour Classic, where he was followed in the general classification by Aurélien Paret-Peintre, whereas Warren Barguil has made a speciality of creating a surprise when he is least expected to do so. An even bigger surprise could come from the only three-time winner of the Dauphiné present in the peloton, now sporting the jersey of Israel Start-Up Nation. Chris Froome still has a score to settle with this race. This is the moment.

Geraint Thomas muß Giro d’Italia aufgeben

Nach seinem Sturz auf der 3. Etappe des Giro d’Italia muß der Tour de France Sieger die Rundfahrt aufgeben und wird nicht am Start der 4. heutigen Etappe stehen.
In der Neutralisation war er über eine Trinkflasche schwer auf seine linke Seite gestürzt. Er konnte die Etappe zu Ende fahren, verlor aber bereits vor dem Schlußanstieg zum Ätna den Kontakt zum Feld und kam mit über 11 Minuten Rückstand auf den Tagessieger ins Ziel.
Bei Röntgenuntersuchungen am Abend wurde zuerst kein Bruch festgestellt aber bei erneuter Untersuchung am heutigen Morgen wurde ein glatter, kleiner Bruch im Becken festgestellt.
Dies bedeutet das Aus für Geraint Thomas, sehr schade, denn er schien in Topform zu sein und mit den vielen Zeitfahr Kilometern beim diesjährigen Giro sicherlich einer der Hauptfavoriten.

Rafał Majka erringt Podestplatz auf der Königsetappe von Tirreno – Adriatico und bleibt Gesamtzweiter

Auf der Königsetappe ging es heute über 202 km von Norcia nach Sarnano-Sassotetto. Die Strecke wies drei klassifizierte Anstiege auf, der letzte davon 14 km lang und bis zu 12 Prozent steil. Sechs Fahrer, zu denen sich später noch vier weitere gesellten, setzen sich schon früh ab und das Peloton ließ sie gewähren bis auf den letzten 50 km das Feld Ernst machte und der Abstand zu den Führenden zu schmolzen begann. Team EF Pro Cycling und Mitchelton-Scott teilten sich die Nachführungsarbeit um die verbleibenden fünf Fahrer an der Spitze zu stellen. Im finalen steilen Anstieg kam das Rennen wieder zusammen und es gelang Rafał Majka in die Gruppe der Favoriten zu kommen. Mit noch 4 km bis zum Ziel attackierte S. Yates, aber Rafal konterte. Obwohl der BORA – hansgrohe Fahrer letztlich nicht mehr zu dem Briten aufschließen konnte, erkämpfte er nach einer sehr starken Performance den 3. Platz. Er behält damit seinen 2. Rang in der Gesamtwertung während Teamkollege Pascal Ackermann seine Führung in der Punktewertung verteidigen konnte.

Reaktionen im Ziel
„Es war eine schwere Etappe, aber mir hat die Strecke gelegen und ich glaube ich bin ein gutes Rennen gefahren. Ich konnte während des Rennens viel Energie sparen und hatte am Ende noch gute Beine. Im finalen Anstieg fuhr ich in der ersten Gruppe und konnte mit Woods und Yates zuerst gut mithalten. Als Yates dann aber seine entscheidende Attacke setzte musste ich ihn ziehen lassen. Ich versuchte noch zusammen mit Thomas an ihn anzuschließen, aber das gelang uns nicht. Am Ende holte ich den 3. Platz, was gar nicht schlecht ist.“ – Rafał Majka
„Lob an die ganze Mannschaft, die Rafa super unterstützt hat. Der einzige Wermutstropfen ist, dass wir das Trikot nicht übernehmen konnten und Yates jetzt mit 16 Sekunden führt. Von Rafa war es eine super Leistung, speziell Woods aus dem Trikot zu fahren. Aber wir bleiben weiterhin auf dem 2. „Egan will once again target the yellow jersey in France and we are very excited to give last year’s Giro winner, Richard Carapaz, his debut in this year’s Tour also,“ Brailsford said, announcing the selection decision on Wednesday morning.
„Geraint will target the Giro and take on the opportunity to double up his Tour de France win with another Grand Tour title, with the aim of being the first Welshman to win it.

„In turn, Chris Froome will target the Vuelta. Chris is a legend of our sport, a true champion who has demonstrated incredible grit and determination to come back from his crash last year. We want to support him to compete for another Grand Tour title and the Vuelta gives him that little bit more time to continue his progress to the top level.

Geraint Thomas is relishing the challenge of the final week of the Tour de France, with the battle for the yellow jersey looking set to go down to the wire.
The Welshman retained second place overall following a tough pair of Pyrenean mountain tests and was buoyed by a strong finish to the Prat d’Albis climb. Thomas regrouped on the first-category slopes, eventually overhauling and putting time into race leader Julian Alaphilippe (Deceuninck-Quick-Step).
With the general classification closing up ahead of a trio of mountain stages in the Alps, including team-mate Egan Bernal in fifth place overall, Thomas is keen to get back on the bike and put a self-confessed bad day behind him.
Speaking on the race’s second rest day he explained: “Obviously yesterday I said on the radio I didn’t feel great into the last climb. As it turns out I did feel great at the top. The main thing going into the Alps is that I feel motivated to get there and to try and finish this Tour off well. It’s been a slightly up and down year, and race, compared to last year. The main thing is that I finished strongly yesterday and I’m itching to go now. I much prefer the Alps and I’ve got a lot better memories there for obvious reasons. I’m just looking forward to it.”

“On the Tourmalet I wasn’t feeling 100 percent. Yesterday I finished really strongly. If that is my bad day, to lose 30 seconds on the Tourlamet is quite a good day really. As (Team Principal) Dave (Brailsford) says, you win a Grand Tour by being good all the way through and managing your effort, rather than going into that deep, deep red zone often – save that for the final day or two. I feel like I’ve managed that effort really well so far and I’m feeling good for it.
“Altitude-wise, in training in Tenerife the drop-off in watts is never really as much as most people. The heat is the same for everyone. I’ve ridden in that heat Down Under numerous times and over the years got used to it.”

With a tight battle at the top of the general classification and a number of teams looking to impose themselves on the climbs, Thomas is comfortable with the race situation and the differing way the team has approached the mountains thus far.
He added: “We’re second and fifth on GC. Okay we’re not in the yellow and we’re not riding on the front all day every day. There’s more than one way to win the Tour. This situation is completely different. We don’t have to pull when there’s other teams who want to do it as well. We’re in a super strong position. Everyone has ups and downs. It’s how you deal with that and I’m confident we’re all in great shape and in a great position – looking forward to some big Alpine climbs.”

In knapp drei Wochen beginnt die Tour of the Alps. Der Steirer Georg Preidler wurde für die Rundfahrt der UCI-Kategorie 2.HC von seiner Mannschaft Groupama-FDJ aufgestellt. Damit trifft er neben den Bora-hansgrohe-Profis Felix Großschartner und Lukas Pöstlberger sowie den Conti-Teams Felbermayr Simplon Wels und Tirol Cycling Team auf starke internationale Konkurrenz: An der Spitze die Grand Tours-Sieger Christopher Froome und Fabio Aru!

Die Tour of the Alps, Nachfolgerundfahrt des Giro del Trentino, findet heuer von 16. bis 20. April zum zweiten Mal statt. Die Tour verbindet die Europaregion Tirol, Südtirol und Trentino. Nachdem der vorletzte Tagesabschnitt am 19. April am Lienzer Hauptplatz in Osttirol endet, verläuft die fünfte und letzte Etappe am 20. April von Rattenberg – über Teile des Kurses der Straßenrad WM 2018 in Innsbruck-Tirol – in die Landeshauptstadt Innsbruck. Dabei stehen drei Durchgänge über die „Olympia Runde“ mit dem acht Kilometer langen „Olympia Climb“ bei Aldrans auf dem Programm.

Georg Preidler dritter ÖRV-Legionär
Nachdem Bora-hansgrohe bereits Felix Großschartner als Kapitän und Giro-Etappensieger Lukas Pöstlberger für die Tour of the Alps nominiert hat, präsentiert die WorldTeam-Mannschaft Groupama-FDJ Georg Preidler in ihrem Aufgebot. Der 27-jährige Steirer, zweifacher Zeitfahr-Staatsmeister und vor zwei Jahren Etappendritter beim Giro d’Italia, zeigt sich top-motiviert: “Meine FDJ-Mannschaft startete letztes Jahr bereits bei der Tour of the Alps und alle waren von der Organisation und Streckenführung begeistert. Die Tour ist sehr schwer und ich werde vor allem meinen Kapitän Thibaut Pinot unterstützen. Im Vorjahr wurde er ja Gesamtzweiter hinter Geraint Thomas und heuer will er ganz oben stehen! Wir alle freuen uns sehr auf die Rundfahrt, wo wir uns den letzten Feinschliff für den Giro d’Italia holen wollen!” Und natürlich spielt auch die Straßenrad WM 2018 in Innsbruck-Tirol im September eine bedeutende Rolle: „Ja ganz klar, viele Top-Leute sind bei der Tour of the Alps auch gerade wegen der Rad-WM am Start; die letzte Etappe führt ja über Teile des WM-Kurses. Für mich bringt das einen großen Motivationsschub, dass ich den WM-Kurs erstmals sehe und endlich wieder in der Heimat ein Rennen bestreite.“

Tour of the Alps mit vielen Top-Stars
Das 20 Mannschaften umfassende Fahrerfeld der Tour of the Alps besticht mit einer enorm hohen Dichte. Nicht weniger als neun WorldTeam-Mannschaften nehmen die erste Etappe von Arco nach Folgaria in Angriff. An der Spitze der Top-Stars stehen natürlich der vierfache Tour de France-Gesamtsieger Christopher Froome vom Team Sky und Vuelta-Gesamtsieger Fabio Aru (UAE Team Emirates). Neben FDJ-Profi Thibaut Pinot, der im Vorjahr Gesamtzweiter hinter Geraint Thomas bei der Tour of the Alps und 2014 Dritter bei der Tour de France wurde, wollen vor allem der kolumbianische Jungstar und Tour de Suisse-Gesamtsieger Miguel Angel Lopez von Astana und der italienische Kletterkünstler Domenico Pozzovivo für Furore sorgen. Ebenso große Chancen auf eine Spitzenplatzierung haben George Bennett (LottoNL-Jumbo), Leopold König von Bora-hansgrohe und Louis Meintjes, Kapitän von Dimension Data.

Das Publikum kann die Tour of the Alps live auf Eurosport 1, Rai Sport (Italien), ORF und zahlreichen anderen Fernsehsendern und Web-Kanälen verfolgen. Insgesamt wird die Tour of the Alps in fast 100 Ländern der Welt live, zeitversetzt oder „on demand“ sichtbar sein.

Die Geschichte der 2. Etappe der TdF 2017 von Düsseldorf nach Lüttich ist schnell erzählt.

Das Wetter, nun ja, wie am Vortag gab es unterwegs viel Regen, aber zumindest waren der Start in Düseldorf und vor allem die Zielankunft in Lüttich trocken, in Belgien kam sogar kurz die Sonne zum Vorschein und der Zielsprint konnte auf trockener, leicht ansteigender Straße im Gegenwind ausgetragen werden.

Bei Km 0 gab es den Angriff des Tages, eine 4-köpfige Spitzengruppe bestehend aus Taylor Phinney (Cannondale-Drapac), Thomas Boudat (Direct Energie), Laurent Pichon (Fortuneo-Oscaro) und Yoann Offredo (Wanty-Gobert) konnte sich sofort vom Feld lösen.

Die Bergwertungen des Tages konnte sich nach langer Verletzungspause Taylor Phinney sichern, so dass er auf der 3. Etappe das Bergtrikot tragen darf.

Die Sprinterteams Lotto Soudal, Quickstep, FDJ und Katusha ließen aber nie große Zweifel aufkommen, dass der Tag in einem Massensprint enden würde und gewährten den 4 Ausreißern keinen großen Vorsprung.

30km vor dem Ziel, bei rund einer Minute Vorsprung, gab es an der Spitze des Hauptfelds in einer rutschigen Kurve auf nasser Straße einen Massensturz, Reto Hollenstein (Katusha) rutschte das Vorderrad weg und viele große Namen waren von dem Sturz betroffen, allen voran Geraint Thomas, Chris Froome und Romain Bardet, der vor der Etappe bei der Einschreibekontrolle in einem Interview seine hervorragenden Deutsch Kenntnisse anwenden konnte.
