Liège-Bastogne-Liège. La Doyenne. The Old Lady. The third of the Monuments. The last Ardennes. The unofficial shift from one-day classics to stage racing.

Cannondale-Drapac hope to surprise in the 103rd running of the Belgian classic. The team of eight will back a single leader despite multiple cards to play.

“Over the last few weeks, we’ve seen the best guys appearing early,” said sport director Tom Southam. “If the best guys appear early here, I’m not worried about that. We’ll be there with the right guys. We have a lot of guys in good shape coming out Basque Country, coming out of Trentino, and we plan to back one of them. I don’t want to say any more than that.”

Meet the Giro 100 riders to watch: the sprinters

The 100th edition of the Giro d’Italia, running from 5 to 28 May, starts in just two weeks. From today, and over the coming days, we present the riders who are the potential protagonists of this historic edition. We will profile the sprinters, stage hunters and General Classification favourites who are ready to battle along the streets of Italy to honour this extraordinary edition of the Corsa Rosa.

Milan, 21 April 2017 –The fastest wheels of the peloton are expected to make the headlines after the first stage, which runs from Alghero to Olbia, where the anticipated final bunch sprint will decide the winner who will be rewarded with the first Maglia Rosa of the Giro 100.
Stage three, also in Sardinia with its finish in Cagliari, is the next stage set to favour the sprinters. The other stages most likely to be decided by the sprinters are: stage 5, with its finish in Messina; stage 7, from Castrovillari to Alberobello; stage 12, from Forlì to Reggio Emilia; and stage 13, with its finish in Tortona.

Fernando Gaviria (COL – Quick Step Floors). One of the most impressive up and coming sprinters according to the way he outclassed World Champion Peter Sagan in stage 6 of this year’s Tirreno-Adriatico. The 22-year-old Gaviria returned to Colombia to prepare for the Giro d’Italia, his first ever Grand Tour, following a fifth-place finish at Milano-Sanremo and ninth in the Gent-Wevelgem.

Sprinttrikot für Pascal Ackermann bei Tour of the Alps

Das Rote Trikot des besten Sprinters bei Tour of the Alps geht dieses Jahr an den jungen BORA – hansgrohe Fahrer Pascal Ackermann, welches er am ersten Tag erkämpft hat. Teamkollege Emanuel Buchmann klettert am Finaltag drei Plätze vor und beendet die Rundfahrt mit einem 7. Platz.

Die letzte Etappe führte das Peloton über 199,6 Kilometer von Smarano nach Trento, mit zwei Bergwertungen und einer Sprintwertung. Nach einigen gefahrenen Kilometern setzte sich eine Gruppe von 13 Fahrern ab und bildete die Gruppe des Tages. In dieser Fluchtgruppe auch, BORA – hansgrohe Fahrer Emanuel Buchmann, der um ein Top Ten Resultat in der Gesamtwertung kämpfte.

Eine Minute zeigte die Uhr zwischen Feld und Spitzengruppe an. Im Feld formte sich die BORA – hansgrohe Equipe rund um Pascal Ackermann, um das Sprinttrikot zu verteidigen. Nach der letzten Sprintwertung bei der diesjährigen Tour of the Alps stand Pascal Ackermann als Sieger dieser Wertung fest. Danach setzte das Team alles daran Emanuel Buchmann in der Spitzengruppe so gut wie möglich zu unterstützen. Emanuel wie auch die anderen GC Fahrer, die in der Gruppe vertreten waren, kamen in den finalen Anstieg als die ersten Attacken gestartet worden sind. Emanuel war auf der Höhe des Geschehens und setzte mit den anderen zur Aufholjagd an.
