Belfort
Stage city for the 31st time, prefecture of the Territoire de Belfort (90), 50 000 inhabitants (Belfortains), 108 000 inhabitants (Grand Belfort)

The most well-known rider from Belfort is indisputably Christophe Moreau, who spent all his teenage years and his beginnings as a rider in the City of the lion.
Today, the Yellow Jersey wearer will be wearing the Belfort Lion jersey. The sculpture, which is a symbol of the city, commemorates Belfort’s resistance to the siege by the Prussian army during the Franco-Prussian war in 1870, enabling it to be the sole part of Alsace that remained French. It is the largest stone statue in France and has been a listed Historical Monument since 1931.
Chalon-sur-Saône
Stage city for the 5th time, sous-prefecture of Saône-et-Loire (71), 45 000 inhabitants (Chalonnais)

Before today, the Tour de France had not been to Chalon-sur-Saône for thirty years. In 1988, the rider from Normandy Thierry Marie picked up the second of his six stage victories on the Tour de France and his first classic stage win following his triumph on the prologue of the 1986 edition.
The construction of the Saint Vincent Cathedral was spread over six centuries. The building combines Romanesque and Gothic styles. The cathedral has been listed as a Historical Monument since 1903, joined by its restored towers in 1991.
