Die Schweizer dominieren:
Indergand und Litscher gewinnen Prolog

Die Schweizer Linda Indergand und Thomas Litscher haben zum Auftakt des 22. Afxentia Etappenrennens im Rahmen des Cyprus Sunshine Cup den 14,5 Kilometer langen Prolog von Lefkara nach Skarinou gewonnen. Indergand hielt die überraschend starke Straßen-Olympiasiegterin Anna van der Breggen und Vorjahres-Siegerin Githa Michiels in Schach. Bei den Herren fuhr Litscher knapp fünf Sekunden schneller als sein Landsmann Lars Forster und lag 19 Sekunden vor London-Olympiasieger Jaroslav Kulhavy aus Tschechien.

Linda Indergand (Focus XC) lieferte bei den Damen eine furiose Vorstellung ab. Die ausgewiesen starke Fahrtechnikerin hatte die eine Minute vor ihr gestartete Gunn-Rita Dahle-Flesjaa (Merida) bereits im ersten Gegenanstieg nach Kilometer drei vor sich.

„Ich dachte noch, ich sei in den Anstieg zu schnell reingefahren, aber als ich Gunn-Rita vor mir sah und den Abstand halten konnte, wusste ich, dass ich gut unterwegs bin“, erklärte Linda Indergand. In der folgenden Downhill-Passage überholte sie Dahle-Flesjaa. „Ich konnte ihr Hinterrad nicht halten“, bekannte die 45-jährige Skandinavierin.

Die Schweizerin und die Norwegerin aucrholten Abstand halten konntin gs bin“ schnell reingefahren, aber als ich Gunn-Rita vor mir sah und den Abstand halten konntüberholten auch noch Annika Langvad (Specialized Racing). Die Marathon-Weltmeisterin aus Dänemark hatte Pech, als sie sich nach der ersten Technischen Zone einen langen Cut im Reifen holte und viel Zeit verlor, ehe sie wechseln konnte.

Indergand passierte auch noch Anne Tauber (CST Sandd American Eagle), die Niederländerin kam am zweiten, kürzeren Anstieg zurück und Indergand konnte sich an deren Hinterrad heften. Bergab zog sie dann wieder vorbei.
„Bergab geht es schon gut“, lachte Indergand. „Es ist immer cool mit einem Sieg in die Saison zu starten.“

Van der Breggen macht wenig Fehler
Elf Sekunden trennten die zweifache Eliminator-Weltmeisterin von der großen Überraschung auf dem zweiten Rang. Anna van der Breggen war früh ins Rennen gegangen und deshalb war sie in ihrem Statement verhalten. Einen zweiten Platz hätte sie überhaupt nicht erwartet.

Die Weltranglistenerste Yana Belomoina geht als Favoritin in die 23. Auflage des Afxentia Etappenrennens im Rahmen des Cyprus Sunshine Cup. Bei den Herren gehören Vize-Weltmeister Jaroslav Kulhavy und der WM-Dritte Thomas Litscher zu den herausragenden Figuren auf der Startliste für vier Tage Rennen unter der Sonne. Am Donnerstag wird der Klassiker mit Athleten aus 23 verschiedenen Nationen mit einem 14,5 Kilometer langen Downhill-Prolog eröffnet.

Natürlich spielen die vier Tage des Afxentia Etappenrennens für die Cross-Country-Spezialisten vor allem eine Rolle in der Vorbereitung auf das erste Saison-Highlight, den Weltcup-Auftakt am 10. März in Südafrika.
Doch weil er der Termin nur zwei Wochen entfernt liegt, darf man erwarten, dass die Weltklasse-Athleten bereits nahe der Hochform sind.

Jaroslav Kulhavy (Specialized Racing) hat das Afxentia 2017 gewonnen, zum dritten Mal in seiner Karriere. Der Olympiasieger von 2012 absolvierte am Sonntag bei frostigen Temperaturen noch eine Trainingseinheit im heimischen Tschechien und freute sich schon auf die Sonne Zyperns.

„Ich hatte einen guten Winter, ähnlich wie voriges Jahr. Jetzt stehen noch drei Wochen mit intensiverem Training auf dem Programm“, so Kulhavy. Dazu will er die Zeit auf Zypern und das Afxentia nutzen.

Star-Parade beim Cyprus Sunshine Cup

Der Cyprus Sunshine Cup ist auch 2018 ein Tummelplatz für die Weltelite der Mountainbiker. Olympiasieger Jaroslav Kulhavy und der WM-Dritte Thomas Litscher holen sich auf der Sonnen-Insel den letzten Weltcup-Schliff, genauso wie Marathon-Weltmeisterin Annika Langvad und das Team Ghost Factory Racing kommt unter anderen mit Supertalent Sina Frei aus der Schweiz. Zudem nimmt Straßen-Olympiasiegerin Anna van der Breggen einen zweiten Anlauf.

Warum zweiter Anlauf? Nun, im Vorjahr weilte die Niederländerin bereits auf Zypern und wollte das Afxentia-Etappenrennen bestreiten. Leider holte sie sich Tage zuvor einen Infekt und musste verzichten.
Doch aufgeschoben ist nicht aufgehoben. Anna van der Breggen (Boels Dolmans) hat erneut für das Afxentia gemeldet und will sich auf dem Mountainbike der Konkurrenz stellen. Man darf gespannt sein, ob sie auf den Spuren ihrer niederländischen Landsfrau Marianne Vos wandeln kann, die 2013 bei ihrem ersten Auftritt prompt gewinnen konnte.

Am zweiten Tag der Rad-Europameisterschaften in Herning, Dänemark, zeigten die ÖRV-AthletInnen mit ausgezeichneten Ergebnissen in den Zeitfahrbewerben auf: Alle Athleten schafften den Sprung in die Top-Ten! Martina Ritter wurde Fünfte, die U23-Fahrer Patrick Gamper und Markus Freiberger belegten die Plätze sechs und sieben. Und zum Abschluss verpasste Matthias Brändle bei den Profis eine Medaille nur um Sekunden und wurde Vierter!

Starker Regen beeinträchtigte die Rennen der Elite-Damen und U23-Herren. Beide Kategorien hatten eine Distanz von 31,5 flachen Kilometern zu bewältigen. Bei den Elite-Damen sorgte Martina Ritter mit dem fünften Platz für eine Sensation. Sie lag nur 2:06 Minuten hinter der alten und neuen Europameisterin Ellen Van Dijk aus den Niederlanden. Silber holte sich Ann-Sophie Duyck (BEL) vor Olympiasiegerin Anna Van der Breggen (NED). „Wenn Träume wahr werden. Ich war sprachlos! Vor der Europameisterschaft hab ich noch gesagt, dass alles, was noch kommt nur mehr eine Draufgabe auf diese erfolgreiche Saison ist. Und jetzt dieser fünfte Platz“, jubelte Ritter im Ziel.

U23-Fahrer stark!
Auch die U23-Herren konnten mit ihrem Rennen mehr als zufrieden sein. Patrick Gamper holte den sechsten (plus 1:30 Minuten), sein ÖRV-Teamkollege Markus Freiberger mit 1:37 Minuten Rückstand den siebenten Platz. „Und bei Markus wäre noch der fünfte Rang möglich gewesen. Er hat den zwei Minuten vor ihm gestarteten Portugiesen rund zwei Kilometer vor dem Ziel eingeholt. Der hat ihn aber nicht gesehen und Markus ist die Kurve hinter ihm zu eng angefahren. Da kam er leider zu Sturz und ruinierte sich die Schaltung, die er auf den letzten zwei Kilometern, die leicht bergab führten, gebraucht hätte. Da hat er sicher 30 Sekunden liegen gelassen“, beschreibt Nationaltrainer Franz Hartl, der sich über eines der besten Zeitfahren der Geschichte der österreichischen U23-Herren freuen durfte. Den EM-Titel gewann der Däne Kasper Asgreen vor seinem Landsmann Mikkel Bjerg mit einer Sekunde Vorsprung. Bronze sicherte sich der Franzose Edoardo Affini (plus 31 Sekunden).

THE GIRO ROSA GOES TO ANNA VAN DER BREGGEN

The Olympic and European Champion 2016 from Holland, is the overall winner of the 2017 edition. making the „double“ since her 2015 triumph in San Domenico di Varzo (Verbania).

Elisa Longo Borghini and Annemiek Van Vleuten (winner of the Green and Cyclamine Jersey), tried an attack on the climb of Vesuvio but it has been useless. The three athletes have been reached by the chasing group on the following descend to Torre del Greco, and Megan Guarnier (1st), Amanda Spratt (2nd) and Katarzyna Niewiadoma (3rd) took the final stage podium.

Born in Zwolle in 1990, Anna Van der Breggen is one of the biggest protagonists of the 2017 season. With the Olympic and European title 2016, she could take an historical triumph in Amstel Gold Race, Fleche Wallonne and Liege – Bastogne – Liege in April. With the Giro Rosa win, she is the new leader of the Women’s World Tour.

Elisa Longo Borghini won the Blue Jersey as best Italian (2nd overall), the Danish Cecilie Uttrup Ludwig is the best young (White Jersey) and Annemiek Van Vleuten (3rd place in the GC and stage winner in Montereale Valcellina and Sant’Elpidio a Mare) won the Green and Cyclamine Jersey.

EPIC WIN FOR LUCINDA BRAND IN PALINURO

The Dutch rider of Team Sunweb, already winner in two stages in year 2015, did a tactical masterpiece today in Palinuro, chasing and overtaking the Ukrainian Tatiana Riabchenko (Lensworld – Kuota), who tried a solo breakaway until two kilometers from the finish. Brand has built her feat with a majestic attack descending from the categorized climb of Cuccaro Vetere, where the delay was of over one minute from Riabchenko, as she was with her compatriot Janneke Ensing (Alè – Cipollini – Galassia) and Anouska Koster (WM3). Brand did the show on the technical downhill and the gap decreases quickly: 30“ after Centola but she slipped on the asphalt, restarting immediately. Riabchenko has been taken at the beginning of the final climb, she tried to resist but lost meters in the final. Brand obtained her third victory in the Giro Rosa, after Mantova and Loano 2015, jumping to the Place 5 in the General Classification. The peloton arrives after 1’33“ and Megan Guarnier won the sprint for the third placement.

GIRO ROSA, A SHEYLA GUTIERREZ RUIZ LO SPRINT DI BARONISSI

The Spanish National Champion has won the Stage 7 of the 28th Giro Rosa (Isernia – Baronissi, 145 km), beating the Italian Soraya Paladin (Alè – Cipollini – Galassia) and the Polish Eugenia Bujak (BTC City Ljubljana). Anna Van der Breggen keeps the Pink Jersey as leader of the General Classification.

This was a very wavy and hilly stage, with the Intermediate Sprint of San Giorgio del Sannio and the Cathegorized Climb of Passo Serra as springboard to the finish of Baronissi. Thirteen riders were the protagonists of the day, in a breakaway that reached till 3’00“ gap: Chloe Hosking and Soraya Paladin (Alè – Cipollini – Galassia), Alison Jackson (BePink – Cogeas), Eugenia Bujak (BTC City – Ljubljana), Elena Cecchini and Alexis Ryan (Canyon SRAM), Clara Koppenburg (Cervelo Bigla), Carmela Cipriani (Conceria Zabri – Fanini – Guerciotti), Rossella Ratto e Sheyla Gutierrez Ruiz (Cylance Pro Cycling), Tatiana Guderzo (Lensworld – Kuota), Sabrina Stultiens (Team Sunweb), Lauren Kitchen (WM3 Cycling Team). The Australian champion of Alè – Cipollini Galassia Team loses meters right before the Intermediate sprint, which was won by Stultiens. The climbers in the breakaway set the pace, Guderzo is first on Passo Serra, followed by Bujak and Stultiens. The gap goes up and down, from 1’30“ to about 3’00“, then it started to decrease quickly. The twelve athletes resisted and could finalize the breakaway: the Spanish Champion Gutierrez was faster in the sprint than Paladin and Bujak, the main peloton arrives after 47“ and the Cuban Arlenis Sierra (Astana Women Team) won the sprint. Anna Van der Breggen can keep the „Maglia Rosa“ without problem and Elisa Longo Borghini completes the overall podium with Annemiek Van Vleuten and the Olympic Champion of Rio 2016.
Tomorrow there is the Stage 8 (Baronissi – Palinuro, 141 kms), with the KOM of Cuccaro Vetere not far from the famous Sea Village on the Cilento.

The rider of Cervelo Bigla Pro Cycling Team, bronze medal at the Road World Championships Doha 2016 and winner of the Dwars door Vlaanderen and Gent-Wevelgem in 2017, has taken the victory of Stage 6 in the 28th Giro Rosa (Roseto degli Abruzzi – Roseto degli Abruzzi, 116.160 kms), response of a bunch sprint where the Scandinavian could beat the American Coryn Rivera (Team Sunweb) and the Italian Giorgia Bronzini (Wiggle High5).

The stage was divided in four laps of a circuit around Roseto degli Abruzzi, including the short climb of Piana degli Ulivi (Cat. 3 KOM in the penultimate lap). The average speed of the first hour was over 40 km/h and it could not permit many attacks in the first kilometers. Alexis Ryan (Canyon SRAM) and the local athlete Carmela Cipriani of Conceria Zabri – Fanini – Guerciotti Team (she lives in Spoltore, near Pescara) earned only a few seconds. At the beginning of the lap 3 Claudia Koster (Team Veloconcept) and Alison Jackson (BePink- Cogeas) tried for a breakaway, the Canadian of the Italian Team directed by Walter Zini leaded the race at the intermediate sprint of Pagliare. The acceleration of the peloton was strong and the three riders Hannah Barnes (Canyon SRAM), Soraya Paladin (Alè – Cipollini – Galassia) and Sofia Bertizzolo (Astana Women’s Team). The Brit won the KOM of Piana degli Ulivi and she could earn a maximal gap of 48“. The teams of the sprinters didn’t want to lose this chance and the breakaway was catched by the peloton a few kilometers later. Even the last transit from Piana degli Ulivi could give the chances of a „finisseur“ attack so the bunch sprint was launched. Lotta Lepistö from Finland took the stage win, with Coryn Rivera and Giorgia Bronzini just behind. A gap of 3“ could give the possibility to Anna Van der Breggen to earn time against her main rivals Elisa Longo Borghini and Annemiek Van Vleuten in the General Classification.

ANNEMIEK VAN VLEUTEN DOMINATES THE TIME TRIAL

The 34-years-old Dutch cyclist of Orica – Scott Team did an impressive performance in the ITT of Sant’Elpidio a Mare (FM), in the Marche region. She literally smashed the concurrence on the 12.7 km of the race, including the short but hard climb of Santa Lucia and Strada Cocciari, 400 meters with peaks of slope at about 30%.

After losing about two minutes in yesterday stage due to the wind, Annemiek Van Vleuten showed her big qualities in the chrono race, as she already won the prologues in Caserta 2014 and Ljubljana 2015. The physical effort has been huge for all the athletes in this discipline, as the average speed was of about 30 km/h, and the big gap earned against her main rivals: 41“ from Anna Van der Breggen (second, but still leading the General Classification) and 1’15“ from Elisa Longo Borghini (Third).

The „Oranje“ cycling celebrates in the Province of Pordenone: Annemiek Van Vleuten is the winner of the Stage 2 (Zoppola – Montereale Valcellina, 122 km) after a breakaway in the final kilometers with her compatriot Anna Van der Breggen (Boels Dolmans, second) and Elisa Longo Borghini (Wiggle High5, third). The Olympic and European Champion is also the new Pink Jersey for the bonification. Anna is back to wear the Maglia Rosa since she triumphed in the final stage in year 2015 in San Domenico di Varzo.

THE 24 TEAMS OF THE 18TH GIRO ROSA HAVE BEEN PRESENTED

Piazza Capitolo in Aquileia has been the place of the official team presentation of the Giro Rosa 2017. Each line-up, starting from Giusfredi – Bianchi until the Boels Dolmans of the last year winner Megan Guarnier came up on the stage. The crowd showed its enthusiasm especially for the three local cyclists Beatrice Bartelloni, Annalisa Cucinotta and the three times Italian National Champion Elena Cecchini, but every athlete received a lot of applauses

Enzo Cainero, President of the Stage Committee, welcomed everyone together with the Majors of Aquileia and Grado in the beautiful Friuli, and the local choirs made their singing performance which anticipated the big presentation of the Giro Rosa teams.

Every time will race with seven riders each and the Giro will begin tomorrow at 4:45 PM with the spectacular Team Time Trial which will assign the Maglia Rosa. The Giusfredi – Bianchi will be the first leaving from Aquileia and the Boels Dolmans closes. its line up includes Megan Guarnier, the World Champion Amalie Dideriksen and the Olmpic Champion of Rio 2016 Anna Van der Breggen. The two leaders of the Women’s World Tour Katarzyna Niewiadoma (GC – WM3 Team) and Cecilie Uttrup Ludwig (Young – Cervelo Bigla Pro Cycling Team).

The final greeting was made by the President of the Italian Cycling Federation Renato Di Roccowith the Giro Director Giuseppe Rivolta, ready for another edition with new emotions to live.
