Biniam Girmay powered to an impressive sprint victory at Clásica de Almería, delivering a perfectly executed team performance in a chaotic and crash-filled finale.
The race remained largely compact heading into the final ten kilometres, but tension rose sharply as multiple crashes disrupted the run-in and made positioning absolutely decisive.
In the middle of that chaos, NSN Cycling Team stayed calm and united.
Matîs Louvel controlled the race behind the early breakaway, keeping the gap under control and bringing the bunch back together with around 20 kilometres to go. As the pace increased, positioning became crucial. Louvel delivered his final effort inside the last ten kilometres before the sprint train began to take shape.
From there, Brady Gilmore, Guillaume Boivin and Lewis Askey took over to secure position at the front of the peloton. Inside the final two kilometres, Tom Van Asbroeck, Hugo Hofstetter and Lewis Askey completed a textbook lead-out, delivering Girmay into the perfect position to launch his sprint.
In a high-speed and technical finale, Girmay opened up with precision to take a convincing victory.

“From the start until the finish, our guys did a super incredible job,” said Girmay afterwards. “That’s why I came to this team — we have the perfect group. I just want to say thank you to everybody. From the start to the finish they did a perfect job.”
The victory marks Girmay’s second win of the season and underlines the cohesion already forming within the sprint group.

“You have to wait sometimes at the beginning of the year,” he added. “But now we already have two wins. It’s a perfect start to the season. It’s nice to start with this incredible teamwork. It gives us super nice motivation to work together and to build up for the biggest races.”

Sports Director Dimitri Claeys praised the commitment shown throughout the race.

He said: “This was one of our first big objectives with the Classics and the sprint squad. We prepared for this since the training camp in Mallorca and we came here with a clear plan.

“Bini finished it off with a fantastic sprint, but even more important was the teamwork. Communication was good, the fighting spirit was there, and the commitment from all seven riders was excellent. It’s beautiful to win after such a complete team performance.”

Doppelsieg im Valencia-Zeitfahren: Evenepoel und Vlasov mit viel Motivation und Respekt
Remco Evenepoel bleibt auch bei der Valencia-Rundfahrt das Maß aller Dinge im Zeitfahren. Der Weltmeister im Kampf gegen die Uhr sicherte sich auf der 2. Etappe bereits seinen dritten individuellen Saisonsieg und – nach dem Gewinn des neuseeländischen Meistertrikots im Zeitfahren am frühen Morgen durch Finn Fisher-Black – den sechsten für Red Bull – BORA – hansgrohe im Saisonverlauf.

Mit Rang zwei, nach 17,5 Kilometern nur acht Sekunden hinter Remco, sorgte auch Aleksandr Vlasov für ein starkes Ergebnis.

Aufgrund starker Winde hatten Jury und Rennveranstalter in Abstimmung mit den Teams beschlossen, dass der Wettbewerb aber auf normalen Straßenrädern ausgefahren werden soll und die Zeiten nicht in die Gesamtwertung einfließen werden. Zu vergeben war aber ein Tagessieg. So bestand die Möglichkeit der Risikominimierung.

Es gab einen Etappensieg zu holen, und ich wollte auch die Organisatoren respektieren. Sie beschlossen, den Kampf um den Tagessieg offenzulassen, und ich entschied mich, ihn anzunehmen. Wir müssen auch in unseren Köpfen echte Sportsmänner sein und bereit für ein bisschen Flexibilität. Für mich war es kein großer Unterschied, weil ich weiß, dass ich auch auf einem normalen Rad ziemlich schnell fahren kann. Wir haben beschlossen, um den Sieg zu fahren, und ich denke, das war eine gute Entscheidung.

Aleks und ich sind heute auf den Plätzen eins und zwei, ein ziemlich gutes Ergebnis für uns. Letztendlich haben wir uns den ganzen Tag so vorbereitet, als wäre es ein normaler TT-Tag. Es war ein guter Test mit einem schönen Resultat.

Marit belohnt angriffslustige Teamleistung zum Valencia-Auftakt als Zweiter
Im Resultat steht ein zweiter Platz von Arne Marit, doch die 1. Etappe der Volta Comunitat Valenciana lieferte aus Sicht von Red Bull – BORA – hansgrohe noch viel mehr.

Nur um wenige Zentimeter hat Arne Marit seinen zweiten Sieg für Red Bull – BORA – hansgrohe im zweiten Rennen verpasst. Im Sprintfinale der 1. Etappe der Valencia-Rundfahrt, in das nur noch etwa die Hälfte des Pelotons gemeinsam ging, benötigte es schon eine gute Kameraperspektive um zu erkennen, das Biniam Girmay ein klein wenig eher den Zielstrich berührt und Arne auf Rang zwei verwies.

Der belgische Neuzugang zeigte sich dennoch zufrieden. „Ich kann zufrieden sein mit einem ersten und einem zweiten Platz gleich zu Saisonbeginn. Das ist gut für die Motivation und den Spirit im Team. Aber ich muss vor allem dem Team danken. Ich wusste gar nicht, dass auch Kletterer ein Leadout fahren können. Remco hat mich am Ende perfekt in Position gefahren. Und auch Emil hat sich auf dem Weg zu den letzten 500 Metern vors Ziel aufgeopfert. Natürlich hätte ich dem Team gerne einen weiteren Sieg geschenkt. Es war knapp. Aber auch ein Podium ist gut, so behalten wir das Momentum.“
Action am einzigen Anstieg
Doch schon lange bevor es auf die Zielgerade ging, sorgte Red Bull – BORA – hansgrohe für reichlich Rennaction. An der einzigen Bergwertung der 160 Kilometer langen Etappe von Segorbe nach Torreblanca, 34 Kilometer vor Ziel, zählte das Team vor allem mit Ben Zwiehoff zu den Aktivposten und war mitverantwortlich dafür, dass an diesem Kategorie-3-Anstieg das Feld komplett auseinanderfiel.

Lediglich 20 Fahrer befanden sich zwischenzeitlich in der ersten Gruppe – vier davon trugen das Trikot von Red Bull – BORA – hansgrohe. Das Team drückte aufs Tempo, weil in Joao Almeida einer Hauptkonkurrenten für die Gesamtwertung nicht mit dabei war. Andere Teams wollten die Situation hingegen nicht ausnutzen und hielten sich zurück. Nachdem Remco Evenepoel am ausstehenden Zwischensprint noch eine Bonussekunde sichern konnte, verzichteten aber auch Giovanni Aleotti und Aleksandr Vlasov auf weitere Kilometer im Wind. Starkes Pellizzari-Solo endet erst kurz vorm Ziel
Giulio Pellizzari setzte 18 Kilometer vor dem Ziel zum Solo an. Und obwohl ihm das im Finale topfebene Terrain überhaupt nicht entgegenkam, schaffte er es bis 1600 Meters vors Ziel, ehe er vom nun wieder größer gewordenen Feld eingeholt wurde.

„Ich habe es einfach versucht und bin darüber auch froh. Ich habe alles gegeben. Es war aber klar, dass es für mich allein in der Ebene schwierig werden würde. Als Team haben wir aber super zusammengearbeitet. Remco hat eine Bonussekunde geholt, das war heute Morgen im Bus das Ziel gewesen. Und auch Arnes Zweiter Platz ist gut. Ich glaube, wir hätten nach der Leistung heute sogar mehr verdient.“

Zu den vielen Profis, die kurz nach dem Start des Pellizzari-Solos zurückkehrten, zählte auch Arne, der dann noch für einen runden Abschluss sorgte. Auch Aleks hatte noch Kraft, sich in den Sprint einzumischen und beendete diesen ereignisreichen Tag als 5er.

The 25-year-old Eritrean phenomenon – already a history-maker, Tour de France green jersey and multiple stage winner, and source of inspiration – joins NSN Cycling Team as a marquee rider ahead of a bold new era for the team.

Girmay’s arrival signals NSN’s commitment to winning and to elevating cyclists who inspire audiences far beyond the finish line.

His versatility as a sprinter and classics rider, and natural leadership qualities, will add depth to NSN’s growing roster of young and ambitious riders, says General Manager Kjell Carlström.

“We are incredibly excited to welcome Biniam to NSN Cycling Team. Not only will 2026 mark a new chapter for the team, but it also represents one for Biniam and I couldn’t think of a better time to embark on a new chapter together,” says Carlström.

In joining NSN Cycling Team, Girmay emphasized the excitement of taking on a new challenge and working with a new sprint train.

“I’m really happy to be here, especially with a new atmosphere and a new beginning, for me and for the team,” adds Girmay. “As a rider, I always like to have a good environment, especially inside the team and I already heard a lot of positive things from my new teammates. When I look back at the last two years of the team, the team has improved so much. There is a really good team spirit.

“Looking at the team’s sprint train, they were always really strong, especially how they stayed together and motivated each other. I heard them many times during races, motivating each other so much, so I’m really looking forward to working together. I see a great opportunity with NSN Cycling Team and I feel that this is the best thing for my future.”

Girmay has a palmarès most cyclists would dream of, with stage victories at the Giro d’Italia and Tour de Suisse among his 16 pro wins to date. However, his eyes remain firmly on the future.

“To be honest, I never look back at what I achieved. I always look to the future,” Girmay explains. “I always care what the next step is. What’s done is already done, so I don’t want to look back or be satisfied. I always want to do more. My main objective for the future, because I’m still only 25, is simple – to win bike races. I really love to win at the classics, and, for the moment, I only won Gent – Wevelgem so I still want to achieve more together with the team. I believe one day we can win one of the biggest races in cycling together.”

Racing For Change, together

Girmay’s signing doesn’t just reflect NSN Cycling Team’s growing performance ambitions but also adds an exciting new development in the team’s Racing for Change project. With the team’s Field of Dreams bike center in Bugesera, Rwanda, already changing the lives of thousands of youths in the area, Girmay’s arrival lends itself to a possible expansion of the project in Eritrea to contribute to the development of cycling talent.

He says: “In Eritrea, cycling is our culture – it’s in our blood. And as an African rider, I want to develop African cycling. This team already did incredible things. I’m super happy to be part of a team with a big project in Rwanda. For me and the team, it’s a nice combination – an African rider and a team that wants to develop cycling in Africa.

“We need people who can give opportunities, bring riders to Europe, or give them the facilities they need. I will give my support from the bottom of my heart to do everything it takes to build Eritrean cycling to the top level and that starts with initiatives like the team’s Racing for Change project. I believe if we create these opportunities, we’ll see more Eritrean and African riders in the biggest races.”

Key points:
• Biniam Girmay, the winner of the green jersey in the last Tour de France, prevailed in a rather unorthodox sprint to take the tenth edition of the Tour de France J:COM Saitama Criterium. The peloton only barely neutralised a last-minute attack by Primož Roglič, allowing the winner of the Vuelta a España to hang on for second place, between the Eritrean and Mark Cavendish, the man with 35 stage wins to his name, who rounded out the podium.

• Never before had an African rider emerged victorious from the Japanese race touted as „stage 22 of the Tour“. Jasper Philipsen claimed the points classification on the 3.6 km urban circuit. Romain Bardet, who bade farewell to the Tour de France last July, was crowned king of the mountains in Japan, as he had been in 2019. Chris Froome, another rider who had already taken part in the inaugural edition in 2013, got the combativity award for his panache.

ROGLIČ FLIES SOLO
The Saitama Super Arena, which hosted the Olympic basketball events in 2021 after rolling out the red carpet for artists of the calibre of Madonna, U2, Whitney Houston, Queen and Taylor Swift, flung its doors open once again for the Criterium. The riders sought refuge from the showers that sprinkled the circuit in this monumental building while waiting for the start of the team time trial, which ended in victory for the Japanese Shimano Racing squad. As soon as it hit the streets, the peloton became a boiling pot of ambition that only got frothier with every passing lap. Japanese cyclists such as Hikaru Sato and Yusuke Hatanaka, eager to shine on home soil, tried to break away time and again, but they were frustrated by Jasper Philipsen and Mark Cavendish’s dogged determination to fight for the points at stake at the intermediate sprints, which were set up on the finish line every four laps. Meanwhile, Romain Bardet and Chris Froome, two former winners of the polka-dot jersey at the Tour, vied for the king of the mountains points on offer at the top of a gentle slope at the exit from an underground tunnel.

Race conditions were more reminiscent of the northern classics than of the blistering heat that sometimes bakes France in July, causing a few spills. The Spaniard Roger Adrià had to bow out of the race after hurting his knee with 34 km to go. The points classification went down to the wire, with Philipsen sewing up victory at the last intermediate sprint. Romain Bardet came out on top in the mountains classification after joining Primož Roglič and Yukiya Arashiro in a breakaway within the final 10 km. The three-man lead group opened up a gap of about 15 seconds over the peloton but, by the time the bell rang for the final lap, the red jersey was alone at the front. The Slovenian had good reason to believe in his chances with 2 km to go, but Intermarché–Wanty got all hands on deck to catch him in the nick of time. Girmay, who has got sprinting down to a science, handily defeated his rivals to get a new victory and a new taste of the Tour de France. Come next July, „Bini“ will have his sights set on the yellow jersey at the end of the opening stage in Lille.

CHRIS FROOME: „THE VENTOUX HOLDS A VERY SPECIAL PLACE IN MY HEART“
Retirement is still a remote prospect for Chris Froome, who has no intention of hanging up his bicycle at the very least until the end of next season, perhaps after taking part in what would be his eleventh Tour de France next summer: „I didn’t make the cut for the last two, but it’s not far-fetched to think that, if I give it my all, I can still earn a spot on the team and play my part —hunting for a stage win, maybe, or working for my teammate Derek Gee, for example“. At any rate, the festivities around the tenth Saitama Criterium, whose inaugural edition he won in 2013 after claiming his first yellow jersey, are an invitation to take a trip down memory lane with the British champion. „Back then, when I won, I thought to myself that this wasn’t the accomplishment of a mission, but rather the start of a story. Later, when I came to Saitama, I was blown away by the number of fans waiting for us and by how well versed in the lore of the Tour they were.“ The former Sky rider became the hegemon of the race until 2017, when he took the win for the fourth time in his career. Little did he know that there would never be a fifth: „That’s life. At the end of the day, I think the 2019 Tour was the one that really got away. I’d never been as strong in training as before my crash in the Critérium du Dauphiné“. To sum up his relationship with the Tour, Froome picks the Ventoux as the symbol of his sometimes mixed feelings: „The Ventoux holds a very special place in my heart. When I won there in 2013, that was when I really knew I was going to take it all the way to Paris. In 2016, I had a similar performance in me, but that crash happened and mayhem ensued. It made no sense at all to start running, but it was an automatic reaction that just kicked in. And, in the end, it went down in history“.

Wenn es läuft, dann läuft es: Biniam Girmay (Intermarché) feierte in Villeneuve-sur-Lot bereits seinen dritten Tagessieg. Auf der 12. Etappe schob der 24-jährige Eritreer in einem relativ unorganisierten Massensprint ein knappes Vorderrad vorbei an Wout van Aert (Visma). Dahinter rollte Pascal Ackermann (Israel) an 3. Position ein.

Die beiden außer Girmay bisher anderen Sprintsieger Cavendish (Astana) und Philipsen (Alpecin) starteten von viel zu weit hinten und kamen nicht mehr über die Plätze 5 und 6 hinaus. Démare und Cavendish verloren ihre Plätze 3 und 5 durch Distanzierung seitens der Kommissäre. Die anderen Fahrer rückten in der Tageswertung entsprechend auf.

Und wenn es nicht läuft, dann kommt es noch schlimmer: Primoz Roglic (Red Bull), bisher auf Platz 4 der Gesamtwertung und im Prinzip ohne große Ambitionen nach oben oder unten, war in einen Massensturz 12 Kilometer vorm Ziel verwickelt. Mit an der Schulter aufgerissenem Trikot verlor er, begleitet von den Teamkollegen, satte zweieinhalb Minuten.

Zum dritten Mal erreichte Biniam Girmay heute als Etappensieger das Ziel. Pascal Ackermann war am Schluss eingebaut und wurde 3.. Das größte Pech hatte jedoch Primoz Roglic, der unverschuldet kurz vor Schluss in einen Sturz verwickelt wurde, dadurch mehr als zwei Minuten auf die Podiumskandidaten verlor und auf Platz 6 zurückfiel. Die beiden Protagonisten von gestern, Tadej Pogacar und Jonas Vingegaard kamen mit dem Hauptfeld ins Ziel.

In Aurillac starteten nach der Aufgabe von Cavendishs Anfahrer Michael Morkov (Covid) 167 Fahrer. Vermutlich mit schweren Beinen in eine kurvige, eher flache Etappe. Nach der Freigabe dennoch die erste Attacke von Kevin Geniets (GFC). Doch wer auch immer auszureißen versuchte, auf den ersten 20 km ließ das Feld keinen weg. Während vorne immer wieder die Post abging, musste Sprinter Fabio Jakobsen krank aufgeben. Gleichzeitig ein vielversprechender Ausreißversuch mit Abrahamsen (UXM), der für Pogacar das Bergtrikot trug, Madouas und Pacher (beide GFC) sowie Turgis (TEN), dem Etappensieger von Troyes. Sturz im Peloton, Pogacar und Ackermann involviert. Zum Glück ging’s für beide rasch weiter. Der Abstand zur Spitze nach 40 km 3’28’’. Die vom Sturz etwas stärker betroffenen Fahrer kamen bis auf Jonas Rickaert wieder zurück.

Bergwertung: Gleichstand Pogacar und Abrahamsen

An der Côte d’Autoire (4. Kategorie, eine Passage von 8 %) Vorsprung 2’13’’. Punkt für Abrahamsen – wie erwartet. Die Nachführarbeit organisierten die Teams um Philipsen und Gaviria und kamen näher. Konsequent: Abrahamsen fügte auf der Kuppe der Côte de Rocamadour den Punkt seinem Konto hinzu. Längere Zeit hatte sich Pelle Bilbao hinter dem Feld gequält. Noch vor der Sprintwertung der 11. Ausfall seit Florenz. Den Sprint der Ausreißer gewann Turgis (20 Punkte) vor seinen Fluchtkollegen. An der Spitze des Feldes – 1’25’’ später – siegte Girmay (11 Punkte) locker vor Philipsen (10) und Coquard (9). Alpecin und Movistar hielten das Tempo hoch und waren vor der Côte de Montcléra keine Minute mehr hinter der Spitze. Turgis musste abreißen lassen. Abrahamsen sicherte sich auch die 3. Bergwertung und liegt jetzt mit 36 Punkten gleichauf mit Pogacar. 42 km vor dem Ziel: Ausreißer eingeholt.

Folgenschwerer Sturz von Roglic

Noch 30 km. An der Spitze hatten die Sprinterteams von den Mannschaften der Favoriten Gesellschaft bekommen. Sturz im Feld an einem Fahrbahnteiler. Ausgerechnet Roglic stürzte dadurch – unverschuldet, konnte zwar gleich weiterfahren, büßte aber Zeit ein. Sein Team spannte sich vor ihn, aber bei dem Höllentempo Richtung Ziel verlor er am Ende 2’27“! Was für ein Pech. Vorne eröffnete Degenkolb (DSM) den Sprint zusammen mit Cavendishs Team. Auch Ackermann und Bauhaus gut platziert. Und Démare, der seinem ersten Sieg entgegenfuhr. Doch von hinten kamen Van Aert und Girmay. Und der Mann im Grünen Trikot holte seinen dritten Sieg knapp vor Van Aert und Démare. Dritter Pascal Ackermann vor Mark Cavendish. Phil Bauhaus Siebter. Bei den deutschen Sprintern ist der Knoten noch nicht geplatzt. Kämpferischster Fahrer wurde Pacher; keine Änderungen bei den Trikotträgern.

Update: Arnaud Demare und Mark Cavendish wurden von der Jury zurückgestuft.

Tadej Pogacar (UAE) behielt ein weiteres Mal das Gelbe Trikot des Gesamtführenden – mit nach der 12. Etappe unverändert 66 Sekunden vor Evenepoel (Soudal) und 74 vor Vingegaard. Roglic fiel durch den Sturz und den anschließenden Zeitverlust vom 4. auf den 6. Platz zurück.

Biniam Girmays zweiter Streich

Noch vor dem Start die bedauerliche Nachricht, dass Mads Pedersen, Mitfavorit für die heutige Etappe und das Grüne Trikot, auf Grund seiner Sturzverletzungen vom Mittwoch nicht mehr an den Start gehen wird. Freie Bahn für Biniam Girmay, der die Chance gleich zweimal nutzte: Als Zweiter beim Zwischensprint hinter Ausreißer Abrahamsen und als Sieger beim Sprint in Colombey-les-Deux-Eglises. Das Grüne Trikot sitzt jetzt fester denn je auf seinen Schultern. Am Ende hatten beide Fraktionen gewonnen: die Sprinter und der Ausreißer.

Regnerisch, windig, frisch; Anorak an, Anorak aus – ein ungemütliches Wetter begleitete die Fahrer vor allem in den ersten Rennstunden beim Klettern über drei giftige Anstiege im Abstand von weniger als 20 km. Das Peloton agierte anfangs unsortiert, als würden Ausreißer und Sprinter schon zu Beginn um den besseren Plan streiten. Obwohl EF Education die erste Attacke initiierte, waren nur bei einem vom Start weg eindeutige Absichten zu erkennen: bei der norwegischen Bergziege und dem Träger des Bergtrikots, Jonas Abrahamsen (Uno-X). So sammelte er – mal allein, mal mit kleiner Gruppe – weitere Punkte ein und baute seinen Vorsprung aus. Da keiner seiner zeitweiligen Begleiter – Powless, Bissegger, Pacher, Healy, Bettiol oder Williams – mit ihm ausreißen wollte, wuchs sein Vorsprung zwischenzeitlich auf über 6’. Folglich war er auch Erster beim Zwischensprint in Lamargelle und holte in der Wertung für das Grüne Trikot gegenüber Girmay auf; letzterer gewann den Sprint des Hauptfeldes vor Thijsen, Philipsen, Coquard & Co und sicherte sich dank dieser 17 Punkte das grüne Laibchen über das Etappenende hinaus.

Abrahamsen erneut kämpferischster Fahrer

Abrahamsen schnappte sich auch die 4. Bergwertung, die Côte de Santenoge, knapp 100 km vor dem Ziel bei immer noch 6’ Vorsprung. Einige Teams gaben etwas mehr Gas und kamen dem Solisten näher. U.a. beteiligte sich Geschke (COF) an der Nachführarbeit. Mit Erfolg. Der Vorsprung schmolz. Beim letzten Berg auf 4’30’’. Das Konzept war aufgegangen: 7 weitere Punkte auf Abrahamsens Konto. Das Peloton erhöhte das Tempo – nur noch 3’ hinter ihm. In Chaumont setzte heftiger Regen ein. Es wurde hektisch. Weiter sinkender Vorsprung dank des von hinten zunehmenden Drucks. Einige Fahrer fielen hinter das Hauptfeld zurück. Auch Bauhaus und Geschke. Wie zu erwarten wieder Abrahamsen kämpferischster Fahrer. Jetzt noch weniger als eine Minute voraus. Als die Sprintvorbereitungen mit Pascal Ackermann in guter Position begannen, waren es nur noch 25’’. Kurz danach war der 170 km erfolgreiche Ausreißer in Sichtweite des Feldes – und eingeholt!

Und wieder war Biniam Girmay nicht zu schlagen

Trotz einer Reihe abgehängter potentieller Etappensieger waren genügend Sprinter im leicht welligen Finale noch vorne dabei; ebenso die Klassementfahrer. Ackermann hatte klug das Hinterrad von Girmay gewählt, wurde dann leicht eingebaut und konnte dadurch seinen Sprint zu spät starten. Am Ende kamen er und De Lie nicht mehr ganz nach vorne. Dort landeten Girmay und Philipsen. Jubeln konnte der Mann im Grünen Trikot über seinen zweiten Etappensieg. Ackermann als hervorragender Vierter und damit einem möglichen Etappenerfolg immer näher. Keine Änderungen bei den Trikotträgern vor dem morgigen 9. Streich auf Schotterstraßen!

Tour de France 2024 | Stage 3 | Plaisance > Turin

At the end of the longest stage on the 2024 Tour de France it was Biniam Girmay (Intermarche – Wanty) who grabbed the win, beating Fernando Gaviria (Movistar Team) to the line in front of the Italian fans. In the frantic sprint in Turin Girmay was too strong for his rivals, just getting the better of Gaviria, with Arnaud de Lie (Lotto-dstny) in third place and Mads Pedersen (Lidl-Trek) and Dylan Groenewegen (Jayco-AlUla) completing the top five. Meanwhile it is an amazing moment for Richard Carapaz (EF Education-EasyPost) as he took control of the Yellow Jersey for the first time in his career.

No breakaway
175 riders took the start on the third day of the 2024 Tour de France with the route covering 230.8 kilometers between Piacenza and Turin, making it the longest in this year’s race. The prospect of a doomed breakaway which would surely be controlled by the sprinters‘ teams deterred any serious potential attackers. There was a strange, short excursion from the peloton for five kilometres by Jonas Abrahamsen and Johannes Kulset (Uno-X) early in the stage, but they quickly re-joined the group. The peloton was still all together as the riders completed the first hour of racing at an average speed of 37.3 km/h.

Racking up points
The race visited Tortona (km 70.8) paying homage to one of Italian cycling’s true greats and on the Côte de Tortone – Fausto Coppi (named after the ‘campionissimo’) Jonas Abrahamsen (Uno-X) added another point to his Mountain classification tally, whilst wearing the green jersey. At the Alexandrie intermediate sprint (km 94.3) Abrahamsen added nine more green jersey points in seventh place, with the sprint won by Mads Pedersen (Lidl-Trek), just ahead of Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Deceuninck) as the fast men tested their legs for the finish in Turin.

Moments in the spotlight
For a local rider on the stage Matteo Sobrero (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe) there was a special little win as he went over the Côte de Barbaresco (Cat 4, km 156.1) in first place, with his entire family and fan club there to enjoy the moment. TotalEnergies rider Fabian Grellier accelerated with 66 kilometers to go and left the peloton, going over the Côte de Sommariva Perno (Cat 4, km 181.4) alone with a 40″ advantage at the top of the climb. Grellier was later reeled back in by the bunch with 28km to go, but his efforts were rewarded with the Most Combative rider prize.

An exciting finish in Turin
The fight for stage victory went down to an anticipated bunch sprint at the finish in front of a big crowd in Turin, with Girmay crossing the line first, ahead of Gaviria, De Lie, Pedersen and Groenewegen. There was drama with a big crash 2.3 km from the finish line that affected a dozen riders, among them, the stage favourite Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Deceuninck), whilst his teammate Van der Poel was the victim of costly a late puncture which meant he lost contact with the bunch. Richard Carapaz’ finishing position on the stage puts him in the Yellow Jersey for the first time in a storied career to make it an incredible day for him and the EF Education-EasyPost team. Jonas Abrahamsen meanwhile, maintains ownership of the polka dot and green jerseys.

Jordi Meeus auf Rang sechs im Sprint der 2. Etappe der Tour de Suisse

Mit zwei Anstiegen der 3. Kategorie lag der Großteil der topografischen Schwierigkeiten der 2. Etappe der Tour de Suisse in der ersten Rennhälfte, bevor es zum Schluss nach einem letzten kleineren Anstieg bergab nach Nottwil ging. Die 173,7 km lange Etappe bot daher die beste Chance für die Sprinter bei der diesjährigen Rundfahrt einen Sieg einzufahren. Etwa 30 km vor dem Ziel ereignete sich ein Sturz, in den Jordi Meeus und Marco Haller verwickelt waren. Beide konnten aber das Rennen fortsetzen. Am Ende konnten die Ausreißer das heranstürmende Feld nicht aufhalten und es kam zu einem Sprint, den B. Girmay für sich entschied. Als bester BORA – hansgrohe Fahrer überquerte Jordi Meeus die Ziellinie auf dem 6. Rang. Marco und Jordi werden aktuell zur Sicherheit weiteren Untersuchungen unterzogen.

Reaktionen im Ziel
„Es war von Anfang an ein superschneller Tag. Dann bin ich im Sturz 30 km vor dem Ziel zu Boden gegangen, aber glücklicherweise bin ich unbeschadet davongekommen. Wir sind den letzten Anstieg dann ziemlich schnell gefahren. Im Finale war Marco Haller wegen des Sturzes leider nicht mit dabei, aber ich hatte immer noch Jonas Koch. Wir haben unser Bestes gegeben, aber es verlief nicht so, wie wir es erwartet haben. Ehrlich gesagt bin ich mit meinem 6. Platz nicht wirklich glücklich, denn ich habe mir mehr erhofft.“ – Jordi Meeus

„Wir wollten heute auf den Sprint mit Jordi fahren, aber dann ging relativ viel schief. Jordi und Marco waren in den Sturz verwickelt, der 30 bis 40 Fahrer involviert hat.
