Soupe brings more French delights
Geoffrey Soupe (Total Energies) couldn’t believe it himself, but the Frenchman was the fastest in Oliva, where he won stage 7 of La Vuelta 23 ahead of Orluis Aular (Caja Rural-Seguros RGA) and Edward Theuns (Lidl-Trek). At 35 years od, he takes his fifth professional win, by far the most prestigious! Making history as the youngest rider to ever lead a Grand Tour, Lenny Martinez (Groupama-FDJ) retained La Roja and will defend it on Saturday on the infamous slopes up Xorret de Cati.
As La Vuelta 23 returns to the valley after an exhilarating finish at the Observatorio Astrofisico de Javalambre, two riders rapidly set off to make the break of the day: José Herrada (Cofidis), participating in his ninth and last La Vuelta, and Ander Okamika (Burgos-BH), who already escaped on day 4.
Alpecin-Deceuninck control, Thomas goes down
Their lead is up to 2’35’’ at km 12 but Alpecin-Deceuninck already control the gap as they want to set a third winning sprint for Kaden Groves, already a winner in Tarragona (stage 4) and Burriana (stage 5). The gap stabilises at around 2 minutes.
Geraint Thomas (Ineos Grenadiers) crashes 60 kilometres into the stage. The Welsh star appears to be in pain but he resumes racing.
Okamika pushes on
Okamika punctures with 110 kilometres to go. His breakaway companion Herrada waits for him and the peloton move closer: 1’35’’ into the last 100 kilometres.
The gap drops down under 20 seconds as they ride through Valencia. Herrada is caught with 67km to go but Okamika keeps on pushing. His lead gets back up to 1’15’’, before he gets caught with 41km to go.
Vingegaard and Soupe sprint
Groves dominates the intermediate sprint (34km to go) to increase his lead in the points standings. Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) seizes the opportunity to take 2 bonus seconds.
It’s a tortuous finale towards Oliva. Geoffrey Soupe (Total Energies) navigates the tricky last kilometre to power to victory ahead of Orluis Aular (Caja Rural-Seguros RGA) and Edward Theuns (Lidl-Trek).

Kuss and Martinez – 2 stars in Javalambre
An outstanding stage 6 of La Vuelta delivered historic results at the Observatorio Astrofisico de Javalambre. The American climber Sepp Kuss (Jumbo-Visma), participating in his third Grand Tour of the year, was the strongest from an impressive breakaway to take victory ahead of Lenny Martinez (Groupama-FDJ). The French wonderkid becomes the overall leader at 20 years old! Primoz Roglic and Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) ganged up against Remco Evenepoel (Soudal Quick-Step) to gain 30 seconds on the Belgian star. La Vuelta 23 started less than a week ago and the GC battle is already in full swing!
After two sprints dominated by Kaden Groves (Alpecin-Deceuninck), La Vuelta 23 heads back to the mountain with a summit finish at the Observatorio Astrofisico de Javalambre, atop the cat-1 ascent of the Pico del Buitre (10.9km at 8%). With a prestigious stage win to claim, and potentially La Roja on the line, attackers are very much inspired.
An impressive battle towards Javalambre
It takes 70 kilometres of extremely hard battle for a group of 42 attackers to eventually make the break, including 11 riders from the GC top 25: Lenny Martinez (Groupama-FDJ), Marc Soler (UAE Team Emirates), Sepp Kuss (Jumbo-Visma), Steff Cras (Total Energies), Wout Poels (Bahrain Victorious), Jefferson Cepeda (Caja Rural-Seguros RGA), David De La Cruz (Astana Qazaqstan), Rémy Rochas (Cofidis), Juanpe Lopez (Lidl-Trek), Mikel Landa (Bahrain Victorious), Hugh Carthy (EF Education-EasyPost) and Attila Valter (Jumbo-Visma). Andreas Kron (Lotto Dstny), already a stage winner in Barcelona, is also up there.
Soudal Quick-Step, Ineos Grenadiers and Movistar work together to control the break. The gap goes as high as 7 minutes. It quickly drops down towards the main ascent of the day… But at the bottom of the climb to the Observatorio Astrofisico de Javalambre, an already seriously reduced peloton still trails by 3’50’’.
Kuss, Martinez, Roglic… What a showdown!
Michael Storer (Groupama-FDJ) sets the pace at the front for Martinez. Einer Rubio (Movistar) attacks with 4 kilometres to go. Romain Bardet (DSM-Firmenich) and Lenny Martinez (Groupama-FDJ) are the quickest to react but Sepp Kuss (Jumbo-Visma) gets back to them and goes solo inside the last 3 kilometres. At the summit, he wins 26’’ ahead of Martinez… who takes La Roja 6’’ ahead of the American climber!
In the GC group, Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) attacks with 4km to go as well. Remco Evenepoel (Soudal Quick-Step) can’t react while Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) his Slovenian teammate at the front. The two of them collaborate to gain 7’’ on Juan Ayuso (UAE Team Emirates), 14’’ on Joao Almeida (UAE Team Emirates) and Cian Uijtdebroeks (Bora-Hansgrohe), 24’’ on Enric Mas (Movistar) and 32’’ on Remco Evenepoel (Soudal Quick-Step).

Astana Qazaqstan’s festival in Hammerfest
Grim weather conditions, with bouts of rain and strong winds, were the main players in the second stage of the 10th edition of the Arctic Race of Norway. Uno-X Pro Cycling Team did its best to tear the race apart by launching echelons, yet the pack got back together with 40 kilometres to go and it all came down to an uphill sprint in Hammerfest. It was there that Astana Qazaqstan executed a perfectly timed sprint to score a one-two with Italian riders Michele Gazzoli and Christian Scaroni, while Cofidis’ Jonathan Lastra completed the stage podium. The Midnight Sun jersey that distinguishes the GC leader is now on the shoulders of Noah Hobbs (Groupama-FDJ Continental), who was fast and wise enough to claim five bonus seconds in the intermediate sprints spread over the stage in order to dethrone Team dsm-firmenich’s Alberto Dainese.
106 riders took the start in second stage of the 2023 Arctic Race of Norway, held between Alta and Hammerfest over 153,4 kilometres, at 14:25. As the red flag dropped, six riders went on the attack to create the day’s first breakaway: Peder Antoni Gravas (Norwegian National Team), Gianmarco Garofoli (Astana Qazaqstan), Johan Ravnoy (Team Coop-Repsol), Camilo Gomez (Trinity Racing Team), Ronan Augé (Groupama-FDJ Continental) and Vincent van Hemelen (Flanders-Baloise). The latter was sporting the Peacock jersey and immediately took on the duty of collecting points for the Mountains classification in order to keep it for another day, cresting in first position both the Raipas Summit (KOM, km 9,7) and the Sarves Summit (Super KOM, km 28,2). Meanwhile, Augé led the way through Milstrand (IS, km 19,7).
Wind creates chaos
Van Hemelen was second to Ravnoy atop the Stokkedalen Summit (KOM, km 42,4), where the breakaway recorded a gap of 4’10” on its favor over the peloton. Said gap would immediately drop down to nothing as racing sped up behind due to the possibility of echelons that did indeed materialize as the riders hit a long, straight stretch of road with 92 kilometres to go. A group of 30 riders went clear in a skirmish led by Uno-X and and echoed by Jayco-AlUla and Team dsm-firmenich, reeling in the break 10 kilometres later. A change of the direction of the course meant the sidewind turned into headwind, thus enabling several groups to bridge back to the head of the race with 40 kilometres left to race, just ahead of the intermediate sprint in Kvalsund (IS, km 118,2) on which Andre Drege (Coop-Repsol) took three bonus seconds ahead of Noah Hobbs (Groupama-FDJ Continental) and Kevin Vermaerke (Team dsm-firmenich), who in turn collected 2” and 1”.
Hobbs takes the Midnight Sun jersey
The peloton was held back by the wind in the final kilometres. Hobbs came first across Akkarfjord (IS, km 142,3), claiming three bonus seconds that would enable him to become GC leader after the stage, as most of the other riders bid their time waiting for the uphill finish in Hammerfest. The road started to rise with 1,7 kilometres to go. Groupama-FDJ Continental, Jayco-AlUla and Flanders-Baloise drove the run in to the finish before Astana Qazaqstan took the win by storm, with Christian Scaroni leading out Michele Gazzoli for an outstanding one-two.

Jordi Meeus auf Rang sechs im Sprint der 2. Etappe der Tour de Suisse
Mit zwei Anstiegen der 3. Kategorie lag der Großteil der topografischen Schwierigkeiten der 2. Etappe der Tour de Suisse in der ersten Rennhälfte, bevor es zum Schluss nach einem letzten kleineren Anstieg bergab nach Nottwil ging. Die 173,7 km lange Etappe bot daher die beste Chance für die Sprinter bei der diesjährigen Rundfahrt einen Sieg einzufahren. Etwa 30 km vor dem Ziel ereignete sich ein Sturz, in den Jordi Meeus und Marco Haller verwickelt waren. Beide konnten aber das Rennen fortsetzen. Am Ende konnten die Ausreißer das heranstürmende Feld nicht aufhalten und es kam zu einem Sprint, den B. Girmay für sich entschied. Als bester BORA – hansgrohe Fahrer überquerte Jordi Meeus die Ziellinie auf dem 6. Rang. Marco und Jordi werden aktuell zur Sicherheit weiteren Untersuchungen unterzogen.
Reaktionen im Ziel
„Es war von Anfang an ein superschneller Tag. Dann bin ich im Sturz 30 km vor dem Ziel zu Boden gegangen, aber glücklicherweise bin ich unbeschadet davongekommen. Wir sind den letzten Anstieg dann ziemlich schnell gefahren. Im Finale war Marco Haller wegen des Sturzes leider nicht mit dabei, aber ich hatte immer noch Jonas Koch. Wir haben unser Bestes gegeben, aber es verlief nicht so, wie wir es erwartet haben. Ehrlich gesagt bin ich mit meinem 6. Platz nicht wirklich glücklich, denn ich habe mir mehr erhofft.“ – Jordi Meeus
„Wir wollten heute auf den Sprint mit Jordi fahren, aber dann ging relativ viel schief. Jordi und Marco waren in den Sturz verwickelt, der 30 bis 40 Fahrer involviert hat. Als Folge hatten wir nicht alle Schlüsselfahrer für den Sprint. Gerade bei so einem hektischen Sprint braucht man immer alle Teammitglieder. Jonas hat einen guten Job für Jordi gemacht, aber ohne ein komplettes Team ist so ein Finale nicht leicht. Also insofern war es ein sehr durchwachsener Tag.“ – Rolf Aldag, Sportlicher Leiter

Maximilian Schachmann fährt solides Zeitfahren zum Auftakt der Tour de Suisse
Die Schweizer Landesrundfahrt begann heute mit einem kurzen Zeitfahren rund um Einsiedeln, das keine nennenswerten topografischen Schwierigkeiten aufwies. Es bot den Spezialisten eine Chance und eine frühe Gelegenheit, das erste Führungstrikot des Rennens zu übernehmen. Auf dem überwiegend flachen 12,7 km langen Parcours holte sich S. Küng den Tagessieg, während Maximilian Schachmann als bester BORA – hansgrohe Fahrer den 14. Platz belegte, mit 27 Sekunden Rückstand auf den Etappensieger.
Reaktionen im Ziel
„Heute war mein erstes Zeitfahren in diesem Jahr und es war gut, wieder in den Wettkampf zurückzukehren. Ich hatte ja im Frühjahr gesundheitlich viel Ausfall. Es war ein harter Test heute. Meine Leistung war nicht unbedingt überragend, aber doch solide und ich bin damit ziemlich zufrieden. Es ist also eine gute Rückkehr in die Etappenrennen.“ – Maximilian Schachmann
„Wir hatten eigentlich im ersten Teil des Zeitfahrens mit Gegenwind und im zweiten Teil mit Rückenwind gerechnet. Am Ende des Tages war es jedoch genau umgekehrt. Deshalb haben wir unsere Strategie für Max und Cian geändert. Wenn man die Leistungen der Jungs analysiert, war es eine gute Leistung von Max, vor allem wenn man bedenkt, dass er in diesem Jahr wegen einigen gesundheitlichen Problemen noch nicht viele Rennen in den Beinen hat. Aber jetzt ist er wieder da und seine Leistung war sehr solide. Die Strecke lag Cian nicht ganz so gut, aber er hat trotzdem ein gutes Ergebnis erzielt und beide Jungs befinden sich in einer guten Position für die noch anstehenden Berge.“ – John Wakefield, Coach

Starke Teamleistung bringt Rang drei für Jordi Meeus beim Brussels Cycling Classic
Eine durchaus anspruchsvolle Strecke erwartete die Fahrer heute beim Brussels Classic. Zwar setzte sich eine frühe Fluchtgruppe ab, das Rennen im Feld wurde aber schon rund 70 km vor dem Ziel eröffnet, als sich 20 Fahrer nach der ersten Passage der Mauer von Geraardsbergen absetzen konnte. Die Gruppe schloss nun schnell zur Spitze auf und BORA – hansgrohe war mit Jordi Meeus und Jonas Koch vertreten. Es begann ein harter Kampf um das Feld auf Distanz zu halten und Jonas zeigte einmal mehr eine herausragende Leistung, um Jordi die Möglichkeit auf den Sieg zu wahren. Die Spitze konnte bis zum Ende etwa 40 Sekunden Vorsprung behaupten und A. Demare sicherte sich den Sieg im Sprint, während Jordi Meeus mit Rang drei ein weiteres Podium einfahren konnte.
Von der Ziellinie
„Jonas hat wieder einen unglaublichen Job gemacht. Er hat entscheidenden Anteil daran, dass die Gruppe vorne geblieben ist. Wir waren beide bei der entscheidenden Attacke dabei, aber es war bis 10 km vor dem Ziel nicht klar, ob wir vorne bleiben können. Ich hatte gute Beine, aber natürlich habe ich an den Anstiegen gelitten. Ich war dennoch für den Sprint optimistisch. Leider bin ich etwas zu spät gekommen. Ich denke, der Speed hätte gereicht, aber das Timing hat einfach nicht gestimmt.“ – Jordi Meeus
