Nach seiner starken Performance vor zwei Wochen bei Paris-Nizza (Etappensieger und Gesamt-Fünfter) war Aleksandr Vlasov mit hohen Ambitionen in die Volta a Catalunya gestartet. Am Ende bestätigte er seine gute Frühjahrsform mit einer weiteren Top-Platzierung.

Trotz zahlreicher Attacken gab es auf der heutigen siebten Etappe keine größeren Veränderungen mehr in der Gesamtwertung der Volta a Catalunya. BORA – hansgrohe Fahrer Aleksandr Vlasov beendete die Rundfahrt durch Katalonien damit auf Rang vier in der Gesamtwertung, 5:56 Minuten hinter dem Gesamtsieger Tadej Pogačar.

“Das war eine wirklich harte Woche, vor allem die letzten Tage waren sehr intensiv. Am Ende habe ich das Podium leider knapp verpasst”, erklärte Vlasov im Ziel. Zur Halbzeit des Rennens hatte der 27-Jährige noch den dritten Rang im Klassement belegt, am Ende musste er der harten Belastung allerdings Tribut zollen. “Trotzdem kann ich mit meiner Form in diesem Frühjahr sehr zufrieden sein. In den letzten Wochen hatte ich wirklich gute Beine.”

In der Tat setzte Vlasov in Katalonien seine beeindruckende Frühjahrs-Serie fort: Nach drei Podiumsplatzierungen bei der Mallorca Challenge beendete er auch die Valencia-Rundfahrt auf Rang drei. Es folgten ein Etappensieg und ein fünfter Gesamtrang bei Paris-Nizza sowie die erneute Top-Platzierung in Katalonien.

“Nach Paris-Nizza hatte Aleks eine ausgezeichnete Form. Auch zu Beginn der Volta a Catalunya war er top drauf. Am Ende hat er allerdings der hohen Rennbelastung etwas Tribut zollen müssen. Das Podium hat leider nicht geklappt, aber Platz vier ist auch ein gutes Ergebnis”, so das Fazit von Christian Pömer, der in Katalonien für BORA – hansgrohe als Sportlicher Leiter im Einsatz war. Pömer hob in diesem Zusammenhang auch die Leistung der restlichen Mannschaft hervor: “Florian Lipowitz beispielsweise. Er ist sensationell gefahren und hat Aleks sehr geholfen”, fügte er an.

Für Aleksandr Vlasov steht nach den anstrengenden Renntagen nun Erholung auf dem Programm. Danach wird er sich auf seine nächsten Renneinsätze beim Flèche Wallonne, Liège-Bastogne-Liège und der Tour de Romandie konzentrieren. “Dort hoffe ich dann erneut auf gute Beine”, so Vlasov.

215km, 71km davon auf den berüchtigten weißen Straßen, aufgeteilt in 15 Sektoren; die härteste, jemals ausgetragene Auflage des Rennens.

Auch wenn die Ur-Austragung erst im Jahr 2007 stattfand, hat sich die Strade Bianche schnell zu einem der ganz großen Klassiker im Kalender des Profi-Radsports entwickelt.

Vom Schlamm überzogene Gesichter, ein Peloton als rasende Staubwolke, Stürze, Defekte und der knallharte Schlussanstieg durch Sienas Gassen zum Grande Finale auf der Piazza del Campo – Strade Bianche ist einfach Drama!
Ein Sturz mit gleich fünf BORA – hansgrohe Fahrern am Boden zerriß nicht nur die starke Mannschaft, auch die großen Ambitionen für das Rennen zerschellten in wenigen Sekunden auf dem groben Schotter.

Aber: Lennard Kämna war unser letzter Mann in der Verfolgergruppe hinter Tadej Pogačar, bewies Kampfgeist und überquerte die Ziellinie auf der Piazza del Campo auf Rang 20.

„Definitiv nicht unser Tag! Wir hatten einen guten Plan und die Jungs waren voll motiviert. Leider hat der Sturz mit Dani Martínez, Sergio Higuita, Jonas Koch, Giovanni Aleotti und Patrick Gamper gleich fünf unserer Fahrer weit zurück geworfen. In so einem Rennen ist es fast unmöglich, noch irgendwie zurück zu kommen, wenn man im falschen Moment am Boden liegt. Lennard Kämna war unser „last man standing“ und kämpfte sich noch in die Top 20.“

Saitama (Japan) – Sunday, November 5th 2023 – Tadej Pogačar wrote the epilogue of a success story and the prologue of a new one. Racing in his Tour de France Saitama Criterium debut, the Slovenian rider came out on top in the Japanese city, the end point of a record-breaking season in which he picked up a whopping seventeen victories, including two Tour stage wins in July. In his final appearance in the white jersey —he will age out of the best young rider’s classification next year— the world number one outsprinted Sepp Kuss for the win, with Peter Sagan on the bottom step of the podium. A short while earlier, Pogačar and his UAE Team Emirates teammates had finished second in the team time trial, which went to Yukiya Arashiro’s Bahrain Victorious.

The champions of the Tour headed to the other side of the world for the last bout of the season, riding in summer-like temperatures under the watchful eyes of tens of thousands of Japanese fans. The ninth edition of the Tour de France Saitama Criterium roared to life as soon as the flag went down. Ten years after becoming the first winner of the race while clad in the yellow jersey, Chris Froome fired the opening salvo on the first of seventeen 3.5 km laps, right after the very first turn. His gutsy ride and relentless attacks throughout the race earned him the combativity award.

The peloton reeled in the first breakaway shortly before the first intermediate sprint, where Mark Cavendish, a 34-time Tour de France stage winner racing alongside Froome in the Legends squad, took the first step in his ultimately successful challenge for the points classification. Meanwhile, Giulio Ciccone (Lidl–Trek) was determined to do justice to the polka-dot jersey he won last July. Mission accomplished for the Italian, who featured in multiple breakaways and grabbed enough points to become the king of the mountains.

Sagan and Kuss attack but Pogačar has the final word

Egan Bernal, second in Saitama in 2019, and Chris Froome were the driving force behind a new breakaway that was caught just before the last intermediate sprint, won by Peter Sagan (Legends). The Slovak kept the momentum going to charge full steam ahead. Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) and Sepp Kuss (Jumbo–Visma) joined the three-time world champion a lap later, with 7 km to go. Cofidis set a frantic pace at the front of the peloton to close the gap, but it was not to be. Not fancying his prospects in a sprint, Kuss tried to outsmart his fellow escapees with an attack from 2.5 km out. Sagan had no answer to this and had to settle for third, but Pogačar held on and came around the American to ride to victory and into the gorgeous sunset.

Arashiro’s clique beats the clock

The day had got under way with a time trial that put the spotlight on homegrown talent and the stars of para-cycling, as well as giving the pros the chance to warm up and get a feel for the circuit, lined by massive crowds. „It was mind-blowing, there were spectators everywhere, not just at the finish“, said a happy Thomas Champion, third in the team time trial with Cofidis. Yukiya Arashiro’s Bahrain Victorious outfit took the spoils in 3′43″42‴, three seconds faster than Tadej Pogačar’s UAE Team Emirates. „In Singapore, we finished third, behind UAE Team Emirates and Cofidis. We were determined to win today“, explained the 39-year-old Japanese, who had planned the turns with his teammates Pello Bilbao, Matevž Govekar and Kamil Gradek in painstaking detail. It was Arashiro’s maiden win in the team time trial and his second overall in Saitama, following his triumph in the road race in 2019. The local hero, who has not missed a single edition of the event since its launch in 2013, has good reason to be proud. „Winning in front of the Japanese crowds means the world to me. Doing so once was already great, but doing so twice is even better!“

Jai Hindley bleibt auf Rang sieben der Gesamtwertung vor dem Tour de France Finale in Paris

Eine letzte Bergetappe wartete heute auf das Feld der Tour de France, bevor es morgen in Richtung Paris geht. Nach einigen Attacken setzte sich an der ersten Bergwertung eine Gruppe vom Feld ab. Am vorletzten Anstieg erhöhte das Feld das Tempo und im Schlussanstieg attackierte T. Pogacar. Pogacar, Vingegaard und Gall setzten sich vom Rest der Favoriten ab und überholten schnell die letzten Ausreißer. Jai Hindley fuhr zu diesem Zeitpunkt mit C. Rodriguez in einer Verfolgergruppe und versuchte den Zeitabstand zur Spitze in Grenzen zu halten. Kurz vor dem Ziel konnten die beiden Yates Brüder noch zur Spitze aufschließen, aber am Ende holte T. Pogacar den Etappensieg. Jai erreichte das Ziel auf Rang 11 und bleibt damit auch siebenter der Gesamtwertung vor der morgigen letzten Etappe.

“Es waren drei Wochen voller Hochs und Tiefs, aber am Ende haben wir uns nichts vorzuwerfen. Ich habe eine Etappe gewonnen und einen Tag Gelb getragen, da kann man sich nicht beschweren. Die Gesamtwertung wollte ich einfach auf mich zukommen lassen, aber es lief gut und ich war ganz vorne dabei. Dann wurde ich krank und bin einmal gestürzt. Ich war ziemlich beeinträchtigt und konnte meine Leistung nicht mehr richtig abrufen. Aber ich habe dennoch jeden Tag bei meiner ersten Tour de France genossen und jetzt freue ich mich einfach auf Paris.” – Jai Hindley

Pogacar-Vingegaard till the end

The duel between Jonas Vingegaard and Tadej Pogacar lasted till the very end of the very last mountain stage of the 110th Tour de France as the Slovenian outsprinted the Dane at Le Markstein to claim his 11th stage win, the second one this year. Felix Gall placed himself between them and Vingegaard retained the yellow jersey on the eve of the grand finale in Paris, but the second last stage was truly the expected fireworks for Thibaut Pinot who rode alone in the lead in front of his fans before crossing the line in seventh position.

NO OPPOSITION TO CICCONE FOR THE POLKA DOT JERSEY

The start proper of stage 20 was given to 151 riders at 13.44. As usual, Victor Campenaerts (Lotto-Dstny) was the first attacker, accompanied this time by his team-mate Jasper De Buyst. Up to Ballon d’Alsace, Campenaerts soloed until he was reeled in 4.4km before the summit. The peloton was compact at the top and the sprint for the KOM was won by Giulio Ciccone who appeared as the only rider interested to contest the polka dot jersey among the four who were still mathematically in the situation of winning it. Carlos Rodriguez (Ineos Grenadiers), 4th overall, crashed at km 33. Once he made it back to the pack, a group of 16 riders including Jonas Vingegaard but not Tadej Pogacar. The yellow jersey eventually sat up to give a chance to the breakaway to succeed.

PINOT’S LAST DANCE IN FRONT OF HIS FANS

Some of these attackers managed to stay away and formed a 6-man leading group with 80km to go: Ciccone and Mattias Skjelmose (Lidl-Trek), Krists Neilands (Israel-Premier Tech), Warren Barguil (Arkea-Samsic), Tom Pidcock (Ineos Grenadiers) and Maxime Van Gils (Lotto-Dstny). A counter-attack involved Thibaut Pinot, Valentin Madouas, Stefan Küng (Groupama-FDJ), Rigoberto Uran (EF Education-EasyPost), Chris Harper (Jayco-AlUla), Ion Izagirre (Cofidis) and Kevin Vermaerke (DSM-Firmenich). Pinot made it across by himself on the way up to col de Grosse Pierre eventually crested in first position by Ciccone. It became a group of 10 with 63km to go with Madouas, Uran and Vermaerke reaching the lead after Harper. Ciccone mathematically won the KOM competition at col de la Schlucht 54km before the end.

A WINNING SPRINT FOR POGACAR AT THE END

UAE Team Emirates chased hard at the helm of the main peloton. Up to Petit Ballon, Madouas, Pinot, Ciccone, Pidcock and Barguil got a maximum advantage of 1’30’’ over the yellow jersey group. 5.5km before the summit, Pinot went solo. He crested Petit Ballon alone after being hugely celebrated by his fans for his last mountain stage in the Tour de France. In the yellow jersey group reduced to ten riders, Pogacar attacked for the first time 14km before the end. The trio Pogacar-Vingegaard-Gall passed Pinot, who had been rejoined by Barguil and Pidcock, 3km before the summit of Platzerwasel and went on to contest the stage victory. Simon and Adam Yates caught up with the leading trio with 5km to go. It helped Pogacar win the stage as he received the help of Adam Yates as a lead out man while Simon Yates overtook Rodriguez to reach the fourth place overall.

Jai Hindley fällt zurück auf Rang drei der Gesamtwertung auf der zweiten Pyrenäen-Etappe der Tour de France

Mit dem Tourmalet und einer Bergankunft in Cauterets-Cambasque war auch die zweite Pyrenäen-Etappe eine Herausforderung für die Favoriten in der Gesamtwertung. Nachdem Jai Hindley heute das Gelbe Trikot auf seinen Schultern tragen durfte, übernahm BORA – hansgrohe sofort Verantwortung im Feld, als sich abermals eine große Spitzengruppe bilden konnte. Auf dem Col d’Aspin schien die Situation unter Kontrolle zu sein, denn der Vorsprung zur Spitze lag konstant bei etwa vier Minuten. Doch am Col de Tourmalet blies Jumbo-Visma zum Angriff und fuhr das Feld völlig auseinander. Zuerst sah es zwar aus, als ob Jai mit Vingegaard und Pogacar mitfahren könnte, doch 4 Kilometer vor der Bergwertung musste er abreißen lassen und fiel in die erste Verfolgergruppe zurück. Vorne konnten Vingegaard und Pogacar zur verbliebenen Spitzengruppe aufschließen, während in der Verfolgergruppe nun Emanuel Buchmann das Tempo machte. Emu gelang es auch, den Vorsprung nach der Abfahrt bis 10 km vor dem Ziel bei 2:30 zu stabilisieren. Im Finale konnte Pogacar sich entscheidend absetzen und holte den Etappensieg, Jai erreichte mit Rodriguez und S. Yates das Ziel 2:39 hinter Pogacar und liegt damit nach den Pyrenäen auf Rang drei der Gesamtwertung.

„Es war ein epischer Tag für mich. Das Trikot zu tragen hat irrsinnigen Spaß gemacht. Ich wollte heute mein eigenes Rennen fahren, also klar habe ich versucht, bei den beiden Großen dranzubleiben, aber als ich gesehen habe, dass das unmöglich ist, wollte ich auch nicht überziehen. Das Trikot war dann eigentlich am Tourmalet schon weg. Aber die Jungs haben in jedem Fall einen tollen Job gemacht, um das Trikot zu verteidigen und besonders Emu hat am Ende noch alles versucht. Es hat halt nicht gereicht, aber meine Beine waren auch heute wieder ganz gut, und ich war am Ende sozusagen „Best of the rest“. Von da her sind wir voll im Plan und diesen Tag in Gelb werde ich nie vergessen.“ – Jai Hindley

“Natürlich wollten wir das Trikot verteidigen, aber ich denke, wir haben vielleicht schon etwas zu früh Kräfte investiert. Ich weiß, mit dem Trikot auf den Schultern und wenn man Mal vorne fährt, dann ist man schnell im Tunnel. Aber wir hätten etwas länger zuwarten und Kräfte sparen können. In jedem Fall waren alle voll motiviert und jeder einzelne hat einen guten Job gemacht. Als Jumbo am Tourmalet All-in ging, war Jai zuerst dran, musste dann aber abreißen lassen. Danach war es gut, Emu bei ihm zu haben und er hat wirklich absolut alles gegeben. Wir haben das Trikot verloren, aber eigentlich wussten wir ja, dass wir hier nicht um den Toursieg fahren. Unser Ziel ist das Podium und ich denke, auch heute sind wir diesem Ziel wieder einen Schritt nähergekommen. Es ist noch weit bis Paris und wir müssen voll fokussiert bleiben, dürfen keine Fehler machen, aber im Augenblick sind wir in einer sehr guten Position.” – Rolf Aldag, Sportlicher Leiter

Pogacar bounces back

The day after losing his first battle, Tadej Pogacar bounced back to claim a solo victory at Cauterets-Cambasque, his 15th of the 2023 season and his 10th stage at the Tour de France while defending champion Jonas Vingegaard took over from Jai Hindley in the overall ranking. The Dane exits the Pyrénées in the yellow jersey.

VAN AERT AND VAN DER POEL IN A 20-MAN LEADING GROUP

The start proper of stage 6 was given at 13.26 to 172 riders. Wout van Aert attacked from the gun, followed straight away by Julian Alaphilippe. A group of 20 leaders was formed at km 20 in three waves: Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma), Matteo Trentin (UAE Team Emirates), Michal Kwiatkowski (Ineos Grenadiers), Neilson Powless, James Shaw (EF Education-EasyPost), Kasper Asgreen, Julian Alaphilippe (Soudal-Quick Step), Nikias Arndt (Bahrain Victorious), Benoît Cosnefroy, Oliver Naesen (Ag2r-Citröen), Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Deceuninck), Bryan Coquard, Anthony Perez (Cofidis), Gorka Izagirre, Ruben Guerreiro (Movistar), Krists Neilands (Israel-PremierTech), Chris Juul-Jensen (Jayco-AlUla), Matîs Louvel (Arkéa-Samsic), Tobias Halland Johannessen and Jonas Gregaard (Uno-X). Coquard passed first at the intermediate sprint of Sarrancolin (km 49.2), before Van Aert, while the peloton led by Bora-Hansgrohe was timed 3’20’’ behind.

POWLESS FIRST AT ASPIN, JOHANNESSEN FIRST AT TOURMALET

Powless crested col d’Aspin in the lead, which put him back in the situation of claiming his polka dot jersey back as Felix Gall was nowhere near the front of the race. The group with Guerreiro in second position was reduced to 14 riders. More action took place in the ascent to the Tourmalet. Alaphilippe sped up 11.5km before the summit and Shaw followed him but Van Aert, pacing the group steadily, brought them back one kilometre further. The breakaway group split up and it was action-packed in the main peloton as well. Jumbo-Visma put the hammer down so Hindley wasn’t able to follow Sepp Kuss, Jonas Vingegaard and Tadej Pogacar at the exit of La Mongie with 6km of climbing remaining. Vingegaard and Pogacar were timed 1’15’’ behind the five leaders 1km before the top. Johannessen became the first Norwegian to pass the Tourmalet in first position with Guerreiro second again. Van Aert waited for his team’s leader and it made a front group of eight riders in the downhill: Kwiatkowski, Guerreiro, TH Johannessen, Van Aert, Vingegaard, Pogacar, Powless and Shaw. The yellow jersey group was two minutes adrift.

POGACAR SOLOES IN THE LAST 3KM

Powless was first to surrender in the final ascent to Cauterets-Cambasque. Van Aert stopped pulling and sat up 4.5km before the end, leaving a leading trio at the front but Kwiatkowski couldn’t take part in the finale as it went down to the expected duel between Vingegaard and Pogacar. The Slovenian attacked 2.7km before the finish. Caught by surprise, the Dane didn’t manage to make it across as the leader of UAE Team Emirates continued to increase his advantage to cross the line 24 seconds ahead of his rival. Tour de France neophyte Johannessen rounded out the stage podium. Hindley reached the finish in sixth position 2’39’’ after Pogacar. Vingegaard exited the Pyrenees with the yellow jersey and an advantage of 25’’ over Pogacar and 1’34’’ over Hindley.
