Soupe brings more French delights

Geoffrey Soupe (Total Energies) couldn’t believe it himself, but the Frenchman was the fastest in Oliva, where he won stage 7 of La Vuelta 23 ahead of Orluis Aular (Caja Rural-Seguros RGA) and Edward Theuns (Lidl-Trek). At 35 years od, he takes his fifth professional win, by far the most prestigious! Making history as the youngest rider to ever lead a Grand Tour, Lenny Martinez (Groupama-FDJ) retained La Roja and will defend it on Saturday on the infamous slopes up Xorret de Cati.
As La Vuelta 23 returns to the valley after an exhilarating finish at the Observatorio Astrofisico de Javalambre, two riders rapidly set off to make the break of the day: José Herrada (Cofidis), participating in his ninth and last La Vuelta, and Ander Okamika (Burgos-BH), who already escaped on day 4.

Alpecin-Deceuninck control, Thomas goes down

Their lead is up to 2’35’’ at km 12 but Alpecin-Deceuninck already control the gap as they want to set a third winning sprint for Kaden Groves, already a winner in Tarragona (stage 4) and Burriana (stage 5). The gap stabilises at around 2 minutes.

Geraint Thomas (Ineos Grenadiers) crashes 60 kilometres into the stage. The Welsh star appears to be in pain but he resumes racing.

Okamika pushes on

Okamika punctures with 110 kilometres to go. His breakaway companion Herrada waits for him and the peloton move closer: 1’35’’ into the last 100 kilometres.
The gap drops down under 20 seconds as they ride through Valencia. Herrada is caught with 67km to go but Okamika keeps on pushing. His lead gets back up to 1’15’’, before he gets caught with 41km to go.

Vingegaard and Soupe sprint
Groves dominates the intermediate sprint (34km to go) to increase his lead in the points standings. Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) seizes the opportunity to take 2 bonus seconds.
It’s a tortuous finale towards Oliva. Geoffrey Soupe (Total Energies) navigates the tricky last kilometre to power to victory ahead of Orluis Aular (Caja Rural-Seguros RGA) and Edward Theuns (Lidl-Trek).

Vuillermoz takes it all

Alexis Vuillermoz (TotalEnergies) enjoyed the most beautiful day on the way to Brives-Charensac, where he won stage 2 of the Critérium du Dauphiné 2022. At 33 years old, the French puncheur bounces back to success in fashion, after a very intense battle against the peloton. Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma) was the fastest from the bunch, again, but it only gave him a place of 6, 5 seconds behind the breakaway riders.
Alexis Vuillermoz thus takes the yellow and blue jersey, ahead of Anders Skaarseth (Uno-X) and Olivier Le Gac (Groupama-FDJ), 2nd and 3rd of the stage. This is the first time Vuillermoz takes a distinctive jersey, and he takes his first victory since 2019, after serious struggles and injuries in the recent years. It will be hard battle for the overall leadership on the way to Chastreix-Sancy resort on stage 3, on Tuesday.

The peloton start from Saint-Péray at midday, with 151 riders and sunny conditions. They quickly go through Tournon-sur-Rhône – where Fabio Aru won stage 3 in 2016 – and face uphill roads that inspire the attackers.
After 18km of battle, five riders manage to open a gap: Olivier Le Gac (Groupama-FDJ), Anders Skaarseth (Uno-X), Anthony Delaplace (Arkea-Samsic), Xandres Vervloesem (Lotto Soudal) and Kevin Vermaerke (Team DSM). Alexis Vuillermoz (TotalEnergies) quickly joins them at the front and the gap is up 3’20’’ at km 24.

BikeExchange-Jayco pull, but Groenewegen struggles

Wout van Aert’s Jumbo-Visma set the pace in the bunch on the day after the Belgian star’s dominant sprint in Beauchastel. The breakaway’s lead reaches a maximum of 4’40’’ at km 45, just ahead of the first categorised ascents of the day.

Vervloesem summits first the cat-3 climbs of Désaignes (km 56.2) and Saint-Agrève (km 63.5), but Pierre Rolland (B&B Hotels-KTM) built enough of a lead in the KOM standings on stage 1 to retain the polka-dot jersey if he reaches the finish without incidents.

Chris Harper (Jumbo-Visma) controls the gap until BikeExchange-Jayco sends Tsgabu Grmay at the front of the bunch halfway through the stage. But EF Education-EasyPost and Ineos Grenadiers up the ante on the main ascent of the day, the cat-2 climb to the Col de Mézilhac (11.6km at 4.1%), and the Dutch sprinter is dropped inside the last 3km of ascent. Vervloesem faces the same fate in the breakaway.

Roglic works, Vuillermoz dominates

At the summit (km 109.8), the peloton trail by 3’10’’, and Groenewegen, assisted by his teammates, is 50’’ further behind. The road keeps rising towards Le Gerbier de Jonc and Trek-Segafredo also participate in the chase. At the intermediate sprint (km 124.3), the gap from the attackers to the bunch is down to 1’40’’, and the Groenewegen group trail by another 1’40’’.

The five riders still at the front work well together to enter the last 25km with a lead of 1’35’’. At the bottom of the final climb – the cat-3 Côte de Rohac, to be summited with 9km to go -, the attackers lead by 45’’. Trek-Segafredo set a hard pace and the gap is down to 30’’ over the top… But the attackers maintain that advantage into the last 3km.

Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) also participates in the chase, but it’s too late. Olivier Le Gac launches the sprint 300m away from the line. Alexis Vuillermoz quickly reacts and eventually passes his compatriot just before the line, with Anders Skaarseth squeezing in P2. Wout van Aert is the first rider from the bunch to cross the line, 5 seconds later. The Belgian star loses his yellow and blue jersey to Vuillermoz.

Vuillermoz: „I wanted to enjoy myself and it paid off“

„It’s incredible. After two years of struggles and a pelvic fracture, I could have stopped riding. But I still wanted to come back. I didn’t really believe in it today, but I saw the break was going and the team didn’t have anyone at the front, so I decided to follow because I was in a good position to do so. I wanted to enjoy myself and it paid off. It wasn’t always easy at the front as a lightweight, but I took my turns at the front. I thought we would get caught but we didn’t wait and see, we took our chance and we were right. When you’re at the front, you have to fight until the end. It was a very long sprint, a bit scrappy. When Olivier [Le Gac] attacked, I didn’t think I would come back, but he faded a bit with 50m to go. I went after him and I was afraid someone else would come back from behind, but it worked out. I’ve never worn a distinctive jersey, it will be a bliss even though it may be difficult to keep it tomorrow with the Chastreix-Sancy finish.“

Burgaudeau’s first is a thriller

Mathieu Burgaudeau (TotalEnergies) took his first professional victory in spectacular fashion on Friday, as he narrowly edged the sprinters in Aubagne, after 213.6km from Courthézon to Aubagne. The peloton controlled stage 6 all day long but the 23 year-old Frenchman managed to go solo inside the last 10km and to fend off Mads Pedersen (Trek-Segafredo) and Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma) on the line. Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) survived the traps of the day to hold on to the yellow and white jersey ahead of the decisive week-end, with a summit finish at Col de Turini on Saturday.

A 115-man peloton take the early start from Courthézon after 6 riders abandon at the start of stage 6: Simon Geschke (Cofidis), Dmitriy Gruzdev (Astana-Qazaqstan), Markus Hoelgaard (Trek-Segafredo), Luke Durbridge (BikeExchange-Jayco), Baptiste Planckaert (Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert Matériaux) and Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Fenix). After a 12km battle, Johan Jacobs (Movistar) is the first attacker to make the break. The leader of the KOM standings Valentin Madouas (Groupama-FDJ), Yevgeniy Fedorov (Astana-Qazaqstan), Julius van den Berg (EF Education-Easypost) and Victor Koretzky (B&B Hotels-KTM) join him at km 14.

The peloton quickly react
Sébastien Grignard (Lotto Soudal) also sets off in pursuit and bridges the gap on the first slopes of the Col de Murs (cat. 2), to be summited at km 36.8. The attackers cover 35km in the first hour of racing to build a lead of 4’30’’. Madouas takes the KOM points at the summit to tighten his grip on the polka dot jersey.
Mads Pedersen’s Trek-Segafredo are the first team to react, sending Julien Bernard at the front of the bunch to control the gap. The attackers’ advantage never gets higher than 4’55’’ at km 46. Bryan Coquard’s Cofidis and Biniam Girmay’s Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert Matériaux also pull the bunch on the valley to bring the gap down to 3’20’’ ahead of the second ascent of the day, Col de Sambuc (cat. 2). Madouas takes 5 KOM points at the summit (km 122.3), and 3 more at Col des Portes (km 131.1).

Attacks on the climb of l’Espigoulier…
The pace is hard despite headwinds blowing from the South-East. This is too much for Grignard, dropped by his breakaway companions with 60km to go. The gap to the bunch is down to 1’45’’ a the bottom of the penultimate climb of the day, Col de Pas de la Couelle. Madouas keeps sweeping the points at the summit (53km to go).
The intensity keeps rising on the way to the final ascent of the day, the cat-1 Col de l’Espigoulier (10.8km, 4.4%). At the bottom, the early attackers are only 1 minute ahead of the peloton. Jacobs attacks and quickly drops everyone but Koretzky. Matthew Holmes bridges the gap from the peloton to the leading duo 6km away from the summit. Julien Bernard is still there to set the pace for Trek-Segafredo. Holmes goes first over the top (28.3km to go) but the peloton only trail by 5’’. The attackers are caught with 27km to go.

… and in an unbridled finale
Soren Kragh Andersen (Team DSM) accelerates on the downhill and splits appear 23km away from the finish. The Dane has a lead of 10’’ at the bottom of the downhill, but Trek-Segafredo reel him in with 15.5km to go. Attacks keep going and Mathieu Burgaudeau (TotalEnergies) goes solo with 9km to go.
The gap gets as high as 20’’ with 4km to go but it drops down to under 5’’ for the last kilometre! Mads Pedersen launches a powerful sprint but Burgaudeau fends him off by a bike length on the line!
