Wiebes is the absolute queen of sprints

Lorena Wiebes (Team DSM) displayed again her pure speed as she sprinted to a second stage win in the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift, in Saint-Dié-des-Vosges, four days after she took the first Maillot Jaune in Paris. The Dutch sprinter put a significant distance between her and the World champion Elisa Balsamo (Trek-Segafredo), 2nd ahead of Marianne Vos (Jumbo-Visma), who slightly increased her GC lead with the time bonuses. On the longest stage of the race, the early attackers survived until they were caught inside the last 3km. They will try again to upset the peloton on Friday with a rolling course towards Rosheim.
The longest route of the week doesn’t deter early attackers. The battle is on from the start in Bar-le-Duc and it takes almost 30km for the situation to settle with a 4-woman breakaway at the front.

A big battle and a significant gap
Emily Newsom (EF Education-Tibco-SVB) and Anya Louw (AG Insurance-NXTG) launch the key move at km 13.5. With other teams, and most notably Human Powered Health, willing to make the break, they struggle to open up a significant gap.
Victoire Berteau (Cofidis) and Antri Christoforou (Human Powered Health) join them at the front and the gap increases to a minute at km 27. It reaches a maximum of 3’45’’ atop the first climb of the day, the cat-4 Côte de Pagny-la-Blanche-Côte (km 61.4), where Berteau takes the first QOM points of the day.

Norsgaard Bjerg abandons after a crash
Team DSM are the first team involved in controlling the gap, with Franziska Koch. Leah Thomas (Trek-Segafredo) also moves to the front of the bunch as the race enters the last 50km with a gap of 2’ from the early attackers to the peloton.
A mass crash involves a few dozens of riders with 46km to go. Among them, Emma Norsgaard Bjerg (Movistar) is forced to abandon. Lotte Kopecky and Chantal van den Broek-Blaak (SD Worx) are also involved, with the latter suffering an injury to the right arm.

Wiebes doubles up
The situation returns to normal and the gap drops down to under 1 minute inside the last 25km. Berteau attacks with 21.5km to go, towards the Bonus point of the day. Only Christoforou can follow her, while Louw and Newsom are reeled in by the pack.
Berteau and Christoforou hold on to a gap of 40’’ with 10km to go, and 20’’ under the 5km to go banner. They are eventually caught inside the last 3km. Trek-Segafredo try to set Elisa Balsamo for the win but Elisa Longo Borghini takes a wrong turn inside the last kilometre. It doesn’t unsettle Wiebes, who takes off to victory with two bike lengths between her and Balsamo. Vos rounds out the podium.

Reusser means power
The European time-trial champion Marlen Reusser (SD Worx) made the most of her skills to take a spectacular solo victory in Bar-sur-Aube, at the end of stage 4 of the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift. The Swiss powerhouse attacked with 23km to go, ahead of the final gravel section of the day, and eventually triumphed in Bar-sur-Aube with a gap of 1’24’’ on Evita Muzic. Marianne Vos (Jumbo-Visma) resisted the many attacks launched by her rivals and eventually dominated them in the final sprint while Mavi Garcia (UAE Team ADQ) lost almost 2 minutes as she suffered mechanical incidents and a crash. Vos will wear the Maillot Jaune for a third day on stage 5, as the peloton take on the longest stage of the Tour (175.6km towards Saint-Dié-des-Vosges).

As always since the start of the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift, the battle for the breakaway is an intense one from the start. It takes many attacks, counter-attacks and follow up moves for a breakaway to establish on the way to Bar-sur-Aube, to be reached after 126.8km.

First attacks
The World champion Elisa Balsamo (Trek-Segafredo) tries to get away with a 23-rider group but Movistar control that move. 42.5km are covered in the first hour before a group of three riders manage to make the break: Laura Asencio (Ceratizit-WNT), Valérie Demey (Liv Racing Xstra) and Coralie Demay (St-Michel Auber 93).
They open a gap of up to 2’40’’ en route to the first categorised ascent of the day, the cat-3 Côte de Celles-sur-Ource (summit at km 68.1), to be immediately followed by the first “white road”, the Chemin blanc de Celles (2,300m). The intensity increases in the bunch with many teams battling for the front positions and the gap quickly drops down.

First white roads
Demey can’t keep up with the pace set by Asencio and Demay while a race of attrition begins in the bunch. Canyon//Sram, SD Worx, Trek-Segafredo and Jumbo-Visma are the most involved teams to set the pace behind the attackers.
Demay goes solo at the front on the 2nd ascent of the day, the cat-3 Côte du Val des Clos (km 77.3). Around 50 riders remain in the front bunch when they eventually catch Demay at km 90, on the penultimate and longest white road of the day, Chemin blanc du plateau de Blu (4,400m).
On the gravel, Kasia Niewiadoma (3rd on GC, Canyon//Sram), Mavi Garcia (6th, UAE Team ADQ) and Cecilie Uttrup Ludwig (10th, FDJ Suez Futuroscope) all suffer mechanicals. They manage to get back to the front bunch on the cat-4 Côte de Maître Jean (km 98.6).

The key attack
Marlen Reusser attacks with 23km to go and quickly opens a gap. She has a lead of 25’’ as she enters the final 20km and faces the last gravel section of the day. Niewiadoma tries to attack several times, Vos also moves, Elisa Longo Borghini (Trek-Segafredo) has a late puncture, but the GC contenders stay together except for Garcia, who sustains another mechanical and eventually crashes inside the last 15km.
Alena Amialiusik (Canyon//Sram), Evita Muzic (FDJ-Suez-Futuroscope) and Veronica Ewers (EF Education-Tibco-SVB) successively set off in pursuit and get together on the Côte des Bergères, the penultimate ascent of the day. But Reusser is too far away and she forges on on the last climb of the day, Côte du Val Perdu, to power to victory.

Ludwig recovers her smile

On the day after a terrible stage 2 for FDJ-Suez-Futuroscope, Cecilie Uttrup Ludwig claimed a spectacular victory in Épernay. The Danish National champion was the fastest on the final uphill of the day to take victory in front of Marianne Vos (Jumbo-Visma) and Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio (SD Worx) after an eventful finale. Vos retains the Maillot Jaune while the gaps open on the overall standings, with only seven riders within a minute of the GC leader.
On the day after an explosive finale around Provins and with many hills on the way to Épernay, baroudeurs are inspired from the start. Attacks are flying non-stop at the front, which prevents any group from opening significant gaps in the early parts of the stage.

First skirmishes
The peloton fly towards the first categorised ascent of the day, the cat-4 Côte de Trépail (km 21.6). At the summit, Femke Gerritse (Parkhotel Valkenburg) adds 2 QOM points to her tally (she was already a joint-leader with her teammate Femke Markus, wearing the polka-dot jersey due to a better position on the overall standings). Elise Chabbey (Canyon//Sram) is 2nd over the top.
After the summit, Pauline Allin (Arkéa) goes for her second breakaway of the Tour, after a previous attempt on the Champs-Élysées. Femke Markus joins her at km 40. More riders try to bridge the gap but the peloton, wary of the wind, cover every move.
Unable to open a significant gap, the attacking duo are caught with 74km to go. The situation then settles towards the final ascents of the day.

More attacks
Gerritse dominates again the cat-4 climbs of Vertus (km 78.9) and Mesnil-sur-Oger (km 88.1), each time ahead of Chabbey. She all but secures the polka-dot jersey at the end of the day.
Amialiusik accelerates after the climb and sets off alone at the front. Many riders try to counter-attack, but none succeeds to join her. She has a lead of 1’ against the bunch as she enters the last 30km.

Unbridled action
The peloton accelerate and the gap is down to 30’’ as they cross the finish line for the first time, with 24km to go. They face an explosive final lap, with the Côte de Mutigny, where Julian Alaphilippe powered to the stage win and the Maillot Jaune on the same roads in 2019.
Amialiusik is caught at the bottom of the climb. Annemiek van Vleuten (Movistar) sets the early pace, Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio (SD Worx) accelerates and then her teammate Demi Vollering powers to the summit. Only seven riders remain at the front: Van Vleuten, Moolman Pasio, Vollering, Lippert, Persico, Garcia, Longo Borghini.
The Maillot Jaune Marianne Vos (Jumbo-Visma) is chasing 15’’ behind them, with Cecilie Uttrup Ludwig (FDJ-Suez-Futuroscope) and Juliette Labous (Team DSM).

Crazy finale
The situation is turned upside down again when Vollering misses a turn and Lippert goes down with her. Eventually, 11 riders get back together ahead of the final ascent of the day: Vollering, Faulkner, Ludwig, Niewiadoma, Labous, Persico, Moolman-Pasio, Van Vleuten, Longo Borghini and Garcia.
Van Vleuten can’t keep up when Longo Borghini accelerates on the slopes of Mont Bernon to take 3 bonus seconds over the top. She eventually gets back for the last kilometre, with the final uphill sections to battle it out.
Niewiadoma, Moolman-Pasio and Vos anticipate… And Ludwig flies past them right at the end to take revenge after a crash-marred stage 2 for her team on Monday.

Vos adds yellow to her iconic record

Marianne Vos (Jumbo-Visma) now has 13 rainbow jerseys and a Maillot Jaune to bring more colour to her stellar record as one of the greatest champions in the history of cycling. The Dutch icon made the most of her experience and speed to win stage 2 of the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift after a very animated finale around Provins. On the uphill finish, she was the fastest from the group of six attackers that had emerged at the front, outsprinting Silvia Persico (Valcar-Travel & Service), 2nd on her 25th birthday, and Kasia Niewiadoma (Canyon//Sram Racing). Elisa Longo Borghini (Trek-Segafredo) finished 4th and gained time on her GC rivals.
The 142 finishers in Paris set off from Meaux with 136.4km of racing ahead of them. The wind, steadily blowing at more than 20km/h and hitting 50km/h, and the rolling terrain lead to early battles.

The early KOM battle
Four riders manage to make the break at km 3: Sabrina Stultiens (Liv Racing Xstra), Femke Gerritse (Parkhotel Valkenburg), Rotem Gafinovitz (Roland Cogeas Edelweiss Squad) and Marit Raaijmakers (Human Powered Health). They open a lead of 2 minutes en route to the categorised climb of the day, Côte de Tigeaux (km 16.9).
At the summit, Femke Gerritse takes the 2 KOM points. She matches her teammate Femke Markus’ tally – their position on GC at the end of the stage will decide who wears the polka-dot on Tuesday.

More battles through the wind
The gap reaches a maximum of 3 minutes at km 27 and the situation settles for some 20km. Then, the tension seriously increases in the bunch, with teams such as Trek-Segafredo, FDJ Suez Futuroscope and Jumbo-Visma trying to split the bunch through the wind.
A dozen of riders are dropped, including the 3-time cyclo-cross World champion Sanne Cant (Plantur-Pura) but most of the bunch stay together. The main consequence of the acceleration is that the early attackers are caught with 78km to go.

The tension rises
As the route turns eastwards, the crosswinds become tailwinds and the race situation settles ahead of the final battles with a 19.7km loop around Provins. The tension eventually increases with a series of crashes around 30km away from the finish. Among the main riders involved, Marta Cavalli (FDJ Suez Futuroscope) and Amanda Spratt (BikeExchange-Jayco) struggle to get back on her bike.
At the same time, Maike van der Duin (Le Col-Wahoo) goes on the move. She has a lead of 15’’ as she crosses the line for the first time. Wiebes dominates the intermediate sprint in the bunch but she can’t follow the move initiated by Elisa Balsamo with her Trek-Segafredo teammate Elisa Longo Borghini.

The Goat takes it all
Six riders are at the front on the final lap: Balsamo, Longo Borghini and Van der Duin, joined by Marianne Vos (Jumbo-Visma), Kasia Niewiadoma (Canyon//Sram Racing) and Silvia Persico (Valcar-Travel & Service), celebrating her 25th birthday with an attack on the roads of the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift.
They enter the last 10km with a lead of 30’’ and increase the gap to 40’’ for the last 5km. Their move is about to allow them to battle for the stage win but also the Maillot Jaune.
Longo Borghini is the first to move inside the last kilometre, while Balsamo sits up. But Vos is in perfect control. Her final kick brings her the stage win, the Maillot Jaune and also the green jersey. The Goat has left her mark!

Wiebes fly to the first Maillot Jaune

History has been written on the Champs-Élysées as the superfast Lorena Wiebes (Team DSM) and the peloton of the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift covered the first stage of the race this Sunday, in Paris.
After 81.6km of fast racing, the Dutch sprinter took her 16th victory of the year… the most historic, claiming the Maillot Jaune of leader of the Tour ahead of her compatriot Marianne Vos (Jumbo-Visma).
Lotte Kopecky (SD Worx) rounded out the podium of the day. The race will now set off towards the East, heading to the finish atop La Super Planche des Belles Filles next Sunday.

The peloton started from the Eiffel Tower in the early afternoon with 144 trailblazers to pave the way for the first Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift. Attackers immediately set off, with riders from EF-Education-Tibco-SVB and Human Powered Health showing their intent to make the break. But the succession of attacks and counter-attacks make it hard to open a gap.

First break and first sprint
After 18 km of racing around the Champs-Élysées, Mischa Bredewold (Parkhotel Valkenburg) attacks. She is quickly joined by Emily Newsom (EF Education-Tibco-SVB) and they open the first significant gaps.
With 8 laps (54.4km) to go, the leading duo are 25’’ ahead of Morgane Coston (Arkea), trying to chase them down, and 40’’ ahead of the bunch. But the peloton accelerate towards the first intermediate sprint (km 34.8). The attackers are reeled in and Marianne Vos (Jumbo-Visma) takes the first points of the day against Lorena Wiebes (Team DSM).

First KOM
Pauline Allin (Arkea) launches a new move inside the last 45km. With many counter-attackers trying to join her, the gap is minimal. Henrietta Christie (Human Powered Health) eventually makes it a 2-woman breakaway, 15’’ ahead of the bunch. But the peloton accelerate again towards the second intermediate sprint, dominated by Lotte Kopecky (SD Worx).

Into the last 25km, Femke Markus (Parkhotel Valkenburg) and Anne Dorthe Ysland (Uno-X) attack and Marta Lach (Ceratizit-WNT) joins them at the front of the race. They battle it out on the only categorised ascent of the day with the peloton chasing hard behind them. Markus takes the 2 KOM points at the summit and the first polka-dot jersey is hers.

First abandon and first Maillot Jaune
The peloton immediately get back to the attackers… And Gladys Verhulst (Le Col-Wahoo) goes on the move, alone. She opens a gap of 50’’ ahead of the final 10km while Alana Castrique (Cofidis) suffers a crash and abandons the race.

Verhulst is stil 30’’ ahead of her rivals when she enters the final lap. She is eventually caught 2.3km away from the line. Ellen van Dijk (Trek-Segafredo) powers to the front but Team DSM and Jumbo-Visma move past her to set a magnificent sprint between the icon Vos and the rising star Wiebes, who narrowly takes the first Maillot Jaune.

Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift D-1

Key points:
• The 1st edition of the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift will hold its Grand Départ on Sunday July 24 in Paris at 1:40pm, at the foot of the Eiffel Tower, with a first stage that follows the circuit on the Champs-Elysées a few hours before the Tour de France.
• Sprinter Lorena Wiebes is dreaming of wearing the first Maillot Jaune, just like world champion Elisa Balsamo and women’s cycling legend Marianne Vos.
• The race, made up of eight stages, will head east on Monday and will finish on the Super Planche des Belles Filles. Dutchwoman Annemiek van Vleuten is the major favorite, although the competition is set to be particularly fierce, especially from the SD Worx team. The leading 18 riders in the UCI world classification will all be taking starter’s orders.

An inaugural setting of the Eiffel Tower and Champs-Elysées
On the day before the Grand Départ, the 144 riders on the 1st edition of the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift met up in Meaux, at the Théâtre du Luxembourg, to attend the pre-race briefing. This town, the most largely populated in the Seine-et-Marne department, will host the start of the second stage on Monday, perhaps in the presence of Tadej Pogacar, as revealed by his partner Urska Zigart, selected at the last minute by Team Bike-Exchange Jayco following cases of covid in her team. By Sunday, the women’s pack will have returned to Paris to tackle the roads on which the 81.6-km long first stage will take place. “We’ll be setting off in front of the Eiffel Tower followed by 12 laps of the circuit on the Champs-Elysées,” explained race director Franck Perque. “On this stage, we should see the sprinters’ teams leading the way. The winner of the stage will have the privilege of wearing the first yellow jersey”. As from Monday, the pack will head east, with the high points of gravel track sections on Wednesday and a weekend in the Vosges Mountains, where the climbers will do battle to see who wins the general classification. On Sunday July 31, the Super Planche des Belles Filles is where the event will conclude its 1033.6 kilometers of racing.

Lorena Wiebes: “We will give everything to get the yellow jersey”
The first Maillot Jaune is likely to be worn by a sprinter on Sunday evening and as such, speedster Lorena Wiebes is the major favorite. The Dutch rider boasts the most victories this season (15), four of which were achieved only last week on the Baloise Ladies Tour. In a show of ambition, she has painted her nails yellow on one hand and green on the other, because the DSM rider also has her sights set on winning the points classification. Firstly, however, her focus is on the first stage, which is seemingly tailor-made for her. “I’ve been aiming for victory on the Champs-Elysées since I discovered the route,” she admitted. “Starting in front of the Eiffel Tower and riding along the Champs-Elysées will be a special feeling. We will give everything to get the Maillot Jaune. I think I’ll be fighting for it with Elisa Balsamo [Trek-Segafredo], Marianne Vos [Jumbo-Visma], Lotte Kopecky [SD Worx] or Emma Norsgaard [Movistar]. It’s going to be chaos. I’m expecting there will be plenty of attacks, especially since there are two intermediate sprints and climbing points to be won. Everyone will be keen to make their mark”.

Annemiek Van Vleuten: “It’s a little sad to see me as the only favorite”
Following the third triumph in her career on the Giro at the beginning of July, Annemiek van Vleuten (Movistar Team Women) is the main favorite for the general classification in the eyes of the world. “That’s what people say, but all the teams are at the top level,” were the more modest words of the world number one, head and shoulders above the rest on Liège-Bastogne-Liège in spring. “It’s going to be tough and the competition is fierce. Marta Cavalli [from FDJ-Suez-Futuroscope, her runner-up on the Giro] has shown she is in very good form, Mavi Garcia [UAE Team ADQ] is as well, not forgetting, of course, Demi Vollering and Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio [SD Worx]. It’s a little sad to see me as the only favorite. I think that we saw on the Giro that there are more pretenders to the crown than that”. The 39-year-old Dutchwoman is “very excited to be starting this new race”. However, from what she says, the Maillot Jaune is not an obsession for her, with her retirement approaching at the end of 2023. “I’m not the type of rider who dreams about jerseys, trophies or victories. My goal is to always be in the best form at the start of the race. I think that is the case for this Tour. I’m in very good form, perhaps even better than on the Giro,” admitted the Olympic and three times World Champion with a smile.

SD Worx pays homage to Pieters
SD Worx, the leading team in the UCI classification, will be wearing a special jersey for the first stage as they pay homage to Amy Pieters, World Champion in 2019, who came out of a coma at the end of April, four months after a terrible fall during training. “She designed the jersey before her accident because she wanted to create one for her cycling store,” explained her team-mate Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio. “She’s making good progress in her recovery. She’s still an integral part of our team and we want to do our very best for her on Sunday whilst wearing this jersey”. Another tribute would be to win a hatful of stages and triumph in the general classification, which is an ambition that SD Worx seems capable of accomplishing. With two pretenders for the Maillot Jaune (Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio and Demi Vollering), a formidable sprinter (Lotte Kopecky), a former world champion (Chantal van den Broek-Blaak) and the current European time-trial champion (Marlen Reusser), the Dutch team could light up the Tour at the slightest opportunity, quite like the Jumbo-Visma team has done on the Tour de France. “We have a chance of winning on all the stages,” claims Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio, who will retire at the end of the year. “The idea is to put on the best show for the fans”.

Trek-Segafredo: a team of champions
The American team will have a strong case to make on the first stage with world champion Elisa Balsamo wearing race number 1. However, the Italian will willingly trade in her rainbow jersey for a yellow one. “Of course, it’s my dream,” said the rider who has recently won two sprint stages on the Giro. “But it will be very tough because all the other girls will want it too. A podium finish would already be an excellent result on the Champs-Elysées and I want to help Elisa Longo-Borghini for the general classification”. Half of the team will start wearing a distinctive jersey because Dutchwoman Ellen van Dijk is the current European Champion and Audrey Cordon-Ragot is the French champion. Speeding up and down the Champs-Elysées with the tricolor jersey is “the icing on the cake” for the rider from Brittany. “It was my genuine goal to start this race wearing this jersey,” she said, savoring the moment in advance. “It’s difficult to have personal objectives in a team like this. My goal has almost been accomplished; now, I just have to enjoy it to the full and be in communion with the spectators who are going to be encouraging me a lot. And if the team manages to grab some victories, then that will be great”.

Broadcast in 190 countries
The race will be broadcasted in 190 countries. In France, France Télévisions will be the official broadcaster and Eurosport in Europe. Two and a half hours of each stage will be televised live every day, apart from the first stage which will be broadcast in its entirety. The race can also be followed live in its entirety on the official web site, with commentary in French and English.

TOUR DE FRANCE FEMMES AVEC ZWIFT

Stars align in Paris

Key points:
• Three weeks ahead of the first Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift, the provisional list of starters features the top 25 riders in the UCI rankings.
• The Dutch stars (Van Vleuten, Vollering, Wiebes, Vos…) come in numbers but they’ll face rivals from all around the world, with Italy’s Balsamo and Cavalli, South Africa’s Moolman-Pasio, USA’s Faulkner…
• From Paris to La Super Planche des Belles Files, the crowds will be able to celebrate the French national champion Audrey Cordon-Ragot and her compatriots Juliette Labous and Evita Muzic, among other local heroes taking on the eight stages (July 24-31).

Racing is in full swing with the Tour de France, and a stellar peloton is about to get into action with the start of the first Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift on July 24th, when their male counterparts reach Paris. The biggest stars of women cycling have circled the date on their calendar since last year’s announcement, with a route presentation seducing all types of riders: sprinters, climbers, GC contenders and stage hunters…

Marianne Vos is among the most versatile and talented cyclist ever, so it’s only natural to see her lead a strong Jumbo-Visma line-up as the Dutch icon pursues yellow glory to go along with her many rainbow triumphs (14 world Elite champion titles across road racing, cyclo-cross and track).
Deprived from Paris-Roubaix avec Zwift because of Covid-19, Vos returned to competition at the Dutch National championships and returned to success in the Giro d’Italia Donne, where she’s currently facing other contenders who will soon light fireworks on French roads. Among them, BikeExchange-Jayco’s Kristen Faulkner rose to the forefront this year in stage races (3rd of Itzulia, 2nd of the Tour de Suisse).

Marta Cavalli (FDJ Nouvelle-Aquitaine Futuroscope, set to become FDJ-Suez-Futuroscope on July 15) is another rising star this season and she’ll display her talents alongside Cecilie Uttrup Ludwig, recently crowned Danish national champion, after a spring campaign hampered by illness.
From Italy, Trek-Segafredo’s Elisa Balsamo is racking up more and more successes with the rainbow jersey on her shoulders. She spearheads the American powerhouse alongside her compatriot Elisa Longo Borghini, a recent winner of the Women’s Tour after her historic conquest in Roubaix this spring. They will also enjoy a strong Dutch support from Ellen van Dijk, the fresh holder of the Hour record. Her predecessor, Great Britain’s Joscelin Lowden, is also set to participate with Uno-X Pro Cycling Team.

Van Dijk and Vos are far from being the only representatives of the Dutch power in the first edition of the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift. Leader of the UCI rankings and a winner of Liège-Bastogne-Liège Femmes in April, Annemiek van Vleuten (Movistar Team Women) is on a mission after the announcement of her retirement in 2023. Pauliena Rooijakkers gets ready to lead Canyon//Sram Racing’s ambitions alongside Poland’s Kasia Niewiadoma. And there will be six teams from the Netherlands taking on the road from Paris to La Super Blanche des Belles Filles.

Team DSM’s Lorena Wiebes will be a strong contender for the first Maillot Jaune and her French teammate Juliette Labous is getting ready for mountainous battles. Local crowds will also be able to cheer for the French National champion Audrey Cordon-Ragot (Trek-Segafredo) and other young talents on the rise such as Evita Muzic (FDJ Nouvelle-Aquitaine Futuroscope).

For a week, they will notably face the many stars of Team SD Worx: Lotte Kopecky, Demi Vollering, Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio… The Dutch powerhouse has riders to chase victory on all terrains. But everyone wants to shine in the first Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift.

THE WEBSERIE
The webserie « Les Femmes Du Tour » tells the stories of these trailblazing champions. From Audrey Cordon-Ragot’s Brittany to the Netherlands of Marianne Vos, passing by Gerona (Spain), where Kasia Niewiadoma and Cecilie Uttrup Ludwig live, meet the stars who dream of the first Maillot Jaune.

Marta Cavalli: «I have gained confidence in myself”

IN THE PELOTON ….

She is the revelation of the spring. Winner of the Amstel Gold Race by catching out the favourites before the red flame and of the Flèche Wallonne Femmes by being the strongest on the Mur de Huy, Marta Cavalli changed her profile during the Ardennes Classics. Now sure of her strength, the world n°6 confirmed this at the beginning of June with a new success at the top of the giant of Provence, the end of the Mont Ventoux Dénivelé Challenges. The 23-year-old Italian is now widely feared. She dreams of claiming the pink jersey in the Giro this summer and wants to support her teammate Cecilie Uttrup Ludwig in her quest for the general classification in the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift.

At the age of 20, Marta Cavalli made her mark by winning the Italian championships. Wearing the champion’s jersey, she started the following year to make a name for herself among the classics riders that matter: 2nd in the Flèche Brabançonne, 4th in the GP de Plouay. The newcomer to the FDJ-Nouvelle Aquitaine Futuroscope team, who had already made a name for herself in the spring classics in 2021, 8th in the Strade Bianche, 6th in the Tour of Flanders, ended the year the same way, finishing 9th in the first edition of Paris-Roubaix Femmes.

During your climb of the Ventoux, you were seen glancing at the Tom Simpson stele. What does this victory on these slopes laden with history mean to you?
It’s a new step up for women’s cycling. We entered a new dimension. It was a great feeling to be the first to arrive at the top of a cycling monument. There was a huge turn-out of people on the side of the road. It was a great day for us.

You were born in Cremona, in Lombardy. Is that where you grew up?
Yes, and I still live there! I only leave home for the races. I know it’s not the ideal place to train. It’s very flat, the winter is cold, it’s foggy… But I like it! I don’t fancy moving at the moment.

Are you still living with your parents?
Yes, we live together.

Like Alberto Bettiol, when he won the Tour of Flanders in 2019.
Of course, sometimes it’s nice to be independent. But it’s good not to be alone at home and to have someone to help you, especially when you travel all year round. But I’m still young. I’ll probably think about it in the future, but not for the time being!

Did cycling come into your life through your father?
Yes, but it also comes from my grandfather, who loved the sport. He used to manage a youth team, about 50 years ago, and my father raced as an amateur. From the time I was 2-3 years old, I went to see him race every Sunday with my mother. There were always bicycles around. I think that made the difference!

„I knew right away that this was the sport for me. And today it’s my profession!“

How old were you when you started?
I was 11 years old. I waited a bit! I started doing artistic gymnastics and volleyball, among other things. Eventually I told my parents that I wanted to have a go. There was a small youth team near Cremona. I knew right away that this was the sport for me. And today it’s my profession!

What motivated you to start at the age of 11?
Because it was an individual sport, maybe. I wanted to show all my determination and strength in an individual sport. In the end, I learned that it was not just about that. For example, at the Ventoux, it wasn’t just my victory, but that of the entire team.

What is your first memory of the Tour?
One of the very first is Chris Froome… running on foot on the Ventoux.

Did you think about this during your race?
Yes, a little! The day before, I looked for videos of the Ventoux, to try to memorize the turns, and I also came across this one.

When you were young, did you go and watch the Giro, or other races, from the roadside?
Yes, and still today, because I still love it! In 2013, the last stage of the women’s Giro was a time trial that finished in Cremona. I went there with my father and took a photo with Marianne Vos. I look at it sometimes and think: „I was young, I knew nothing about women’s cycling and now I’m racing with Marianne!“

Did you have an idol?
Yes, Mark Cavendish. Once the Giro sprints were over, I would get on my bike and try to imitate him on the road! Maybe that’s one of the reasons I got into cycling.

Was it a dream of yours to become a professional rider?
No, I didn’t really think about it. It came naturally, year after year. When I think back, I ask myself how I ended up doing it!

Was there another profession that you wanted to do?
No, not that I can recall.

What did you study?
I was a science student in high school. I went to university but it was hard to reconcile with cycling. I had to stop. But I think I’ll go back in the future, because I like studying. For now, I have decided to put all my energy into cycling.

What does it mean to you to know that you can beat anyone in a race as tough as the Flèche Wallonne Femmes?
A lot of things. Before, I was never sure of myself and this uncertainty used to drain me of a lot of energy. Now I know I can do it. And so do the people around me. They trust me. It’s a whole new dimension. But on the other hand, nothing has changed in my life. I’m still with the same team, I want to go in the same direction. I’ve just gained confidence in myself.

Does this change your outlook for the Tour de France? Is the plan still to support Cecilie Uttrup Ludwig or will you race for yourself?
No, it’s still the same game plan. I’ll go to the Giro for the general. And I will support Ludwig in the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift. We have had a look at the final three stages, I liked them! We will have our opportunities and I am sure it will be a great experience. The team is motivated, we have already won a lot. We will go to the Tour with determination.

What would be a successful Tour?
If we can wear the Maillot Jaune for just one day, that would be great. But we also want to make a splash, to put on a show for the people and cycling.

Track racing was your entry point to the top level. Do you still compete on it?
Not really. In training sometimes, because it’s good exercise and good for the head. But having decided to improve in the mountains, it wouldn’t be a good idea to combine road and track again. Before (until 2020) I raced a lot with the national team. The track allowed me to understand what kind of efforts are made for me. I have developed technical skills there. On the track, you are always flat out and you have to make decisions quickly. This helps me on the road. I am confident when the speed is high and riding downhill. It has helped me to become a complete cyclist.

In her fourth participation in the Flèche Wallonne Femmes, Marta Cavalli took a prestigious victory, ten days after winning the Amstel Gold Race. In the middle of a classics campaign in which she burst onto our screens, Marta Cavalli played a decisive role in the 2022 edition of Paris-Roubaix Femmes, finishing in fifth place.

Distinguishing trait: „She is the most serious girl I know”, says her teammate Marie Le Net. “When the assistants suggest putting cream on her legs, she puts it on herself. She prepares her post-race snacks. She is very self-sufficient and pushes all the cursors of performance to the max.”

Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift 2022

WRITING HISTORY WITH THE TOUR DE FRANCE FEMMES AVEC ZWIFT

Key points:
 Race director Marion Rousse presented the inaugural edition of the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift, scheduled for 24th to 31st July 2022, at the Palais des Congrès in Paris this morning.
 The eight stages that make up the event capture the essence of cycling past, present and future, from the Champs-Élysées, where the opening stage will be decided right before the men’s Tour de France comes to a close, all the way to the Super Planche des Belles Filles, not to mention the Ballon d’Alsace and a white gravel road stage in the vineyards of Champagne.

„We will be looking back on this in 100 years“, said an enthusiastic Marion Rousse, aware of the historic significance of the birth of the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift. Indeed, the minds that drew up the route of this watershed event in women’s cycling turned to the legacy of the Grande Boucle for inspiration. The guiding principle of this eight-stage race is to honour the past of the event whilst looking forward to the future and staying true to the standards of the present. The show will get on the road on the Champs-Élysées, which has hosted the final stage of the Tour since 1975 and where the first bouquet will be awarded to whoever wins there on 24th July. A sprint finish is on the cards on the next day in Provins, so the yellow jersey could jump from rider to rider in a merry-go-round, not least because the wearer will also have to defend it on the stage to Épernay… held on the same puncheur-friendly terrain where Julian Alaphilippe lit up the Tour in 2019.
The next stage has something new in store in the heart of the vineyards of Champagne: white gravel roads of the sort that often animate the men’s races, including Paris–Tours and stages over the Plateau des Glières. Halfway through the Tour, Bar-sur-Aube will provide an opportunity to take stock of the situation. The peloton could change tack as it delves deeper into eastern France, starting with a trek through the Alsatian vineyards that will leave breakaway specialists licking their lips. The stage 7 finish at the top of Markstein, in contrast, is one for the mountain goats: the Petit Ballon–Platzerwasel–Grand Ballon sequence will be a Vosges classic of sorts. The closing stage will cram in several hallowed sites of cycling, where legends have been written in every era, from René Pottier, the first rider to go over the Ballon d’Alsace in the 1905 Tour to Tadej Pogačar, who turned the 2020 edition on its head on La Planche des Belles Filles. The women of the class of 2022 will be tackling the „Super“ version of the climb, which is one kilometre longer and will set the stage for the climactic showdown.

The eight stages of the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift:
