Niewiadoma in Trentino to fight for gold and glory

The Polish rider with a passion for cuisine has her sight set on the European Championships in Trento (8-12 September 2021), hoping to add to her previous success in the continental champs and claim her first seasonal win.
As an intense feeling between Katarzyna Niewiadoma with the European Road Cycling Championships has remained unchanged although she still misses the most prestigious success in the Elite category (while she won the U23 race twice), maybe the right time is coming, from September 8th to 12th in Trentino that “Kasia” considers „a special place, with so much to offer, the nature, the mountains, good food and very kind people“.

For the Polish rider, winner at the 2016 Giro del Trentino, the current season has been plenty of top placements in major races, grazing the victory at Flèche Wallonne and Dwars door Vlaanderen, both finished as runner-up: „I would like to win more frequently, even if it’s not easy – Niewiadoma argued -. I’m aware that it is just a matter of time, I should trust the timing and keep believing in myself and my team! Maybe I wish I had some more luck in the past, but it’s all part of my learning process”.

On the Trentino roads, however, the Polish athlete will have to face the hard competition of the Dutch team and other fierce competitors aiming to dress the European Champion jersey. „All Dutch cyclists are always to watch out for, as well as Elisa Longo Borghini, Cecilie Ludwig, Lizzy Deignen and Lisa Klein, just to name a few.“

Regarding the route of the Women’s Elite road race on Saturday, September 11th (107.2 km) and its technical features, Niewadoma said: „I haven’t been there for a recce, but I have seen some race profiles on the internet and I’m excited about it! I always like so much to represent my country and this year we have a great opportunity to race in Italy, which I always feel very special. I love Italy and would love to live there for a while one day.“

In recent years, Niewiadoma has been able to make herself appreciated as a reference point in women’s cycling that “keeps progressing, with better focus on aspects such as training and nutrition” and by her followers for her passions beyond cycling, mostly fashion and cooking: “I was mainly focusing on cycling previously but over the time I realized to need something extra for keeping myself inspired and motivated. I love cooking and baking, and luckily my boyfriend (former US rider Taylor Phinney, ed) has a big appetite and eats anything with a big smile”.

Sagan sprints towards Trento: “I’m coming back”

After the knee injury sustained at the Tour de France, Peter Sagan looks forward to his racing comeback at the UEC Road European Championships in Trento (September 8th-12th), five years after his victory in Plumelec.
In 2016 in Plumelec (France), Peter Sagan inaugurated with a win the first edition of the UEC Road European Championships for the Elite categories, writing the first page of a prestigious golden book. Five years later, the three-time World Champion is completing his preparation for the “Trentino 2021” edition from September 8th to 12th, 2021.

The name of Sagan joins other major riders such as Tadej Pogacar, Remco Evenepoel, Filippo Ganna and Kasper Asgreen, who have already confirmed their presence at the UEC Road European Championships “Trentino 2021”.
The European Championships will also mark Sagan’s return to racing after the knee injury that forced him to withdraw from the Tour de France, and the consequential surgery. “My recovery is on the right track,” stated the Slovak. “I’m training intensively in order to get back to the best possible level.”
Trento will be both a litmus test and an important goal, with an Elite Men’s race (179 km), on Sunday September 12th, potentially very well suited for Sagan’s skills. “In a race such as the Road European Championships, there are so many factors that can influence a race and nearly all of them are beyond our control. Just that makes it impossible to truly foresee how it will play out. The only thing I am sure about is that I will give it my all, and I’ll try to get the best result I can”, explained Sagan.

Five years ago, the European Champs – and the following World title – were the last major successes before Sagan switched teams to Team BORA-hansgrohe, the one he is now about to leave for French TotalEnergies. A stint full of success, just like the one that the European Champs have enjoyed over these five years, with more top-class winners like Alexander Kristoff, Matteo Trentin, Elia Viviani e Giacomo Nizzolo.
“Without a doubt, the UEC Road European Championships have seen an impressive growth since 2016. I don’t know to what extent my victory contributed to this, but I’m happy to add my small stone even if it’s just a little bit. As for this year’s edition, I’m sure it will have a top-level field that will guarantee an exciting race”, said Peter Sagan.

UEC Road European Championships Trentino (Northern Italy) from September 8th to 12th, 2021

Tadej Pogačar lands in Trento: the European Champs turn yellow
Winner of the last two editions of the Tour de France, the 22-year-old Slovenian phenomenon will show off in Trentino from 8th to 12th September: the continental championships keep adding champions to their startlist
Another stage race giant is about to head to Trento for UEC Road European Championships in Trentino (Northern Italy) from September 8th to 12th, 2021: Slovenia’s Tadej Pogačar is set to feature among the greatest stars of the Continental event.
The Slovenian has won the last two editions of the Tour de France and showed his immense talent also in one-day races, winning Liège-Bastogne-Liège in 2021 and achieving an Olympic Bronze medal in Tokyo.
Pogačar is a champion who loves to attack, and that is exactly what he might have to do to shake up the plans of the puncheurs in the Trento circuit, and maybe even before, on the ramps of the Monte Bondone, the highlight of the in-line section of the Elite Men’s course.
The presence of eclectic talents such as Pogačar and Evenepoel brings an added tactical dimension to the race. The limited distance of the Elite Men Road Race route of Sunday, August 12th (179,2 Km) could make it more adapt to daring long-distance moves, something certainly in the style of Pogačar.
An exceptional climber and a talented time trialist, it is hard to find weaknesses in the 22-year-old rider from Komenda, central Slovenia. Pogačar will also participate in the European time trial, the 22,4km test of Thursday, September 9th, suitable for time trial specialists, providing another opportunity for Slovenia to aim big following the gold medal of Primoz Roglic in the Olympic Time Trial.

Elena Cecchini looks to add to family tally in Trento
A few days after the Olympic bronze medal was won by her fiancé Elia Viviani, the Italian went on reconnaissance on the route of the UEC Road European Championships in Trento, to which she looks with ambitions. „Watch out for surprises in the finale …“.

On August 5th, she was in front of the TV screen holding her breath for her life partner, Elia Viviani, who rode his way to the bronze medal in the Omnium at the Tokyo Olympics. On Sunday 8th, however, Elena Cecchini began working on her own ambitions for a medal, the one she will chase on Saturday September 11th, when the European Women’s Elite road race title will be up for grabs again in Trento.
The 29-year-old from Italy, vice-European champion in Alkmaar in 2019 behind Amy Pieters, has come to Trento specifically to discover the secrets and pitfalls of the circuit of 13.2 km (250 m of elevation gain) on which the road races will be held. Her ambition is to improve the result of the 2019 edition, and imitate Elia Viviani himself, who won that edition.
„Our coach Salvoldi had reported me about a challenging course, and he was right,“ says Elena Cecchini. – There might not be a huge elevation gain, but the circuit gives no respite. The Povo climb can make a selection as the laps sum up, especially in the women’s races.”
„I like the course – continued the three-time Italian champion – and I think it will be a beautiful European Championship, open and hotly contested. It could be resolved with a reduced sprint, but the finale in the city center is very technical: a small gap could make a difference with all those corners affecting the chasing effort. We will have to watch out.”

A course suited to strong rouleurs with a fast finish – a description that matches the skills of Elena Cecchini. „When racing with the National team, you always try to give your 110%, and racing at home is an extra motivation. It’s too early to say what our tactical plans will be, but I hope to have my opportunity. In the end, taking the win for Italy is the most important thing.”
The recent editions of the UEC Road European Championships often went down to the duel between Italy and the Netherlands, the latter clearly being the leading nation in World women cycling. In the Olympic race in Tokyo, however, the tactical stalemate ended up favoring an outsider, Austrian Anna Kiesenhofer, with Dutch Van Vleuten in second place and Italian Elisa Longo Borghini to the bronze medal. „The Dutch team is the one to beat, individually they are so strong. We watch out for each other a lot in these races, because we know our respective strengths. Compared to the Olympics it will be easier to control the race because relying on bigger teams and racing on a circuit makes things much easier to control. As Italians, we will also have the people’s support on our side: I am looking forward to racing in Trento.“

Colbrelli targets the stars: “Winning in Trento would be amazing

The road race of the 2021 UEC – European Championships in Trentino (September 8-12) is a big goal for Italian National Champion Sonny Colbrelli. “The relatively short distance will lead to an exciting race. My dream is to imitate Nizzolo: to win the European title after conquering the Italian stripes“

Sonny Colbrelli’s tone of voice is eloquent. On the second block of the season, the Italian rider aims for big goals such as the 2021 UEC Road European Championships to be held in the city of Trento, Trentino, Italy (September 8-12).
As usual, the Italian National Team line up with ambitions, hoping to extend the winning streak ignited by Matteo Trentin in Glasgow 2018, followed by Elia Viviani in Alkmaar 2019 and Giacomo Nizzolo in Plouay 2020.
The road race is circled on Colbrelli’s calendar, as he hopes to follow the steps of defending champion Giacomo Nizzolo, winner of the European crown last year after conquering the Italian title. “I race to chase Nizzolo’s journey, but it won’t be easy”, admits the Bahrain-Victorious athlete. – “I expect to see Giacomo on the starting line too, and he sure has the opportunity to defend the European title”.

Indeed, the Italian Team can rely on several options, but the 31-year-old from Brescia has proved quality and consistency in the first part of the season. “I’m satisfied with my performance at the Tour de France. I couldn’t win, but the Tour is the most important race in the world. I hope to achieve a prestigious win in the following races, starting with the European Champs in Trentino. Now, I face three weeks of training camp in Livigno before racing in Hamburg and Benelux Tour”.
EuroEyes Cyclassics Hamburg and Benelux Tour are two ideal races to prepare for the European Championships, with a route suited to classy and punchy fast finishers, rather than pure sprinters. “I like the route in Trento, it is suited to puncheurs like me, Nizzolo, Ballerini, Bettiol, Trentin”.

A key passage of the Elite Men’s race in Monte Bondone, the iconic mountain of Trento. “It’s a legendary climb to be respected. It could make a selection if a National Team without a fast man holds a fast pace. It’s challenging but not impossible. All in all, the relatively short mileage will contribute to an eventful race from the early kilometres. The route’s choice from the organizing committee promises a great show”.

In addition, achieving a great result in Trento may increase the Azzurri’s confidence in view of the UCI World Championships in Leuven (Belgium). “The European title is a significant achievement, to win it in a home edition would make it even more special. Coming into World Champs with the European crown or medal under the belt is important for two reasons: it would take off some pressure from our shoulders and give us the confidence to achieve any goal.”
A great show is expected on the European Championships courses. Five days of competitions and thirteen titles to be awarded (six for men, six for women, and the Team Relay) with the Elite Men’s Road race as the grand finale. The wonderful Piazza Duomo in Trento will host starts and finishes of the road races, whilst the 22,4 Km-time trials will take off from the MUSE – Sciences Museum in Trento, with the finish line located in Piazza Delle Donne Lavoratrici.

During the 2021 summer, Val di Sole will host the UCI Mountain Bike World Championships in Daolasa di Commezzadura, Trentino (August 25-29), before handing over to Trento for the quest for the Road European Champion’s jerseys from September 8th to 12th, 2021.

Welcomed by Trentino’s Sports Assessor Roberto Failoni, Trentino Marketing’s President and CEO, Gianni Battaiola and Maurizio Rossini, Trento, Bondone, Valle dei Laghi Tourist Board’s President Franco Aldo Bertagnolli, Val di Sole Tourist Board Director Fabio Sacco, UCI Vice-President Renato Di Rocco, UEC (Union Européenne de Cyclisme) President Enrico Della Casa and Italian Cycling Federation President Cordiano Dagnoni attended the event.

Italian National Olympic Committee President Giovanni Malagò and Road Cycling National Team Coach Davide Cassani also sent a video message.

In recent years, the European Championships have gained prestige and traction under the aegis of UEC (Union Européenne de Cyclisme), as confirmed by the roll of honor embellished by the name of champions such as Peter Sagan, Alexander Kristoff, Anna van der Breggen, Marianne Vos, Annemiek Van Vleuten and Italian Matteo Trentin, Elia Viviani and Giacomo Nizzolo.
With 13 titles for grabs over five days of competition, the Road European Championships will bring to Trentino over 800 athletes across the Junior, U23 and Elite categories. Scheduled between the Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan, and the World Championships in Leuven, Belgium, the continental event organized by Trento, Monte Bondone and Valle dei Laghi Tourist Board, in close collaboration with Trentino Marketing, the Municipality of Trento and Trento Eventi Sport, will be hunting ground for punchy all-rounders.

To win on the charming finish line in Trento’s Piazza Duomo, the riders will need to get creative on the technical build-up or use their fast finish. The imagination: a thrilling and entertaining battle should be in the cards for September’s clashes.
For the first time, the Province of Trento will assign an international road cycling title. There is still the exclusive taste of a first time for an area well accustomed to the maximum levels of this sport.

13 TITLES OVER FIVE DAYS
From September 8th to 12th, 2021, a great show is expected on the European Championships courses. Five days of competition and thirteen titles to be awarded (six for men, six for women, and the Team Relay) with the Elite Men’s Road race as the grand finale. From the top, the riders will take a downhill slope towards Trento, where they will face eight laps of the 13,2 km city circuit with the Povo climb (3,6 km at 4,7%).
On the previous days, the city circuit will host the other European Championships races with start and finish in Piazza Duomo, while the time trials will take off from the MUSE – Sciences Museum in Trento, with the finish line located in Piazza delle Donne Lavoratrici, taking place on a flat and fast course, suited to the specialists of the discipline.

THE RISE OF THE EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS
The Road European Championships were first contested 25 years ago (1995), and have grown in prominence in recent years thanks to the commitment of the UEC (Union Européenne de Cyclisme) in valorizing the tradition of cycling in Europe, where the sport was born and raised.
Since 2016, the European Champions of all categories have worn the champion’s jersey for an entire season. After the victory of Peter Sagan (2016) and Alexander Kristoff (2017), three Italian riders in a row claimed the Men’s Elite title: Matteo Trentin in Glasgow (2018), Elia Viviani in Alkmaar (2019), and Giacomo Nizzolo in Plouay (2020).
A POSTCARD FROM TRENTINO
After the renouncement to the 2020 edition due to the Covid-19 situation and the postponement to 2021, Trentino looks at the European Road Cycling Championships as a perfect showcase to display its beautiful landscapes. Thanks to the Eurovision TV coverage and the use of innovative solutions, the continental event will be broadcast in 71 Countries, exceeding the 14 million viewers registered in 2020.

“It will be a great showcase for Trentino, as well as for the city of Trento and the green landscapes that surround it, enhanced by the race finishes held in the innovative Albere district and the heart of the city, in Piazza Duomo. This initiative was made possible by the perfect collaboration with the city administration led by Mayor Franco Ianeselli. Once again, Trento confirms its sporting spirit on the great occasion”, said Franco Aldo Bertagnolli, President of Trento, Monte Bondone, Valle dei Laghi Tourist Board.
QUOTES

ROBERTO FAILONI (Trentino’s Tourism and Sport Assessor): “Cycling in Trentino has a long and successful history, but this season will be a memorable one. It’s a route suited for fast athletes, but they’ll have to work for a their opportunity on a technical and entertaining course.”

Milan (Italy), July 12th, 2021

September 8-12 the official dates of Trentino’s 2021 UEC Road Euro Champs

After postponing the event due to the COVID pandemic, the OC unveiled the new dates of the UEC Road European Championships in Trento (Northern Italy). The logo and schedules have been updated, no changes in the race course.
Trentino is ready to restart with the usual motivation and enthusiasm. After postponing the appointment with top-class cycling due to the health emergency and the suspension of sports events in Trentino, the UEC Road European Championships OC unveiled the new dates of the event for 2021. The event will be held in Trento (Northern Italy) from September 8th to 12th, 2021. The 2020 edition, initially assigned to Italy, will take place in Plouay (France), from August 24th to 28th.
For the President of the Province of Trento, the European Championships stands out among the main fixtures of the 2021 season loaded with big hopes. Trento and Trentino aim to restart in the name of major events: for the first time, this territory will crown the new European Champions with an atmosphere worthy of such a big occasion.
The Province of Trento’s Sports Assessor underlined the importance of having an official date to look to the future with confidence. The goal for everybody is to come out of this emergency quickly, and restore the ideal atmosphere to create a top-level event.

Thirteen titles (six for men, six for women, and Team Relay) will be awarded in 5 days of racing, with the Men’s Elite Road Race set to close the program on Sunday, September 12th, 2021.
„We get back on track after the void caused by the emergency – Trentino Marketing’s CEO Maurizio Rossini said – with the hope of holding this big event in a progressively normalizing situation. The decision to postpone the event turned out to be the right one, given the challenges at this phase of the restart for the international activity. Trento will wait one year longer with the perspective of celebrating the event in style“.
The 2021 UEC Road European Championships routes remain unchanged. The OC confirmed a course suited to classy and punchy fast finishers, rather than pure sprinters: those who hope to secure the European crown will need to hold their own on every terrain. All races‘ start and finish will take place in Piazza Duomo, except for the time trials, starting from the MUSE – Sciences Museum in Trento, with the finish line located in Piazza delle Donne Lavoratrici.
As underlined by the Mayor of Trento: “Hosting the start and the finish of the European races is a dream coming true. We will work to guarantee the best in terms of organization and welcoming. We want riders, staff and supporters to be able to enjoy of our landscapes and Trento’s millenial history, culture and arts, in addition to the beautiful routes characterizing our event“.
In the 2021 calendar, the European Championships in Trentino will slot between the Olympic race in Tokyo (Japan) and the World Championships in Leuven (Belgium), in a month loaded with great fixtures. „Thanks to the proactive collaboration with the UEC, we have identified an open date in the international calendar which was ideal for the city. Trento will give its best, confirming its sports spirit and offering its warmest welcome and hospitality“, said Trento Monte Bondone Valle dei Laghi Tourist Board’s Director Elda Verones.
The European Championships promise to have a significant media impact. Eurovision will cover the entire event live on TV, airing the first three days in streaming and the last two on TV, spreading Trento’s images all over 60 European Countries.
