Just days after crashing hard, young Warren Barguil has won stage 13 of La Vuelta taking his first WorldTour win of his career at just 21 years of age.
Warren fought hard to get into the main breakaway of the day on a stage which favoured the attackers, and then made the selection on the tough first category climb with 45km remaining. From this point on it was a fast downhill run-in before a false-flat run-in to the finish. Coming into the finish, Warren was in a small group vying for the victory and he kept his cool and attacked near the finish to solo to an emphatic victory, the first professional victory of his career. This also completes a clean sweep of the Grand Tours, with a different rider taking a stage in each of the three major stage races in the cycling calendar. “I am so proud of my victory today in my first year as professional and for it to come in a Grand Tour,” said aan elated Warren after the finish. ”I crashed really hard on the Sierra Nevada last Sunday and I was really disappointed after that, as I was 19th in the GC and had several top 10 finishes in the mountain stages. Even if that not was my biggest goal this Vuelta it was a pity to lose this overall position. But the rest day came at the right moment and since that I have felt better and better. We knew that today was a good opportunity for a break away, so I saved my energy and I stil lfelt really good in the finale. I knew it suited me very well and I waited for the right moment to attack and I did it. Unbelievable. “I am so happy that I can confirm my talent with this victory, given I had some problems with my back in the beginning of the season. But the team gave me all their trust and guidance to work towards this race without any pressure or expectations. It is great how they support me and help me to develop as a rider. That is exactly the reason that I wanted to be part of this team.”
