Groves also loves Burriana

On the day after he claimed another victory in Catalunya (Tarragona), Kaden Groves (Alpecin-Deceuninck) sprinted to victory in Burriana (Valencia), where he got the best of Filippo Ganna (Ineos Grenadiers) and Dries Van Gestel (Total Energies). This win is the 20th for an Australian rider in La Vuelta, with Groves joining Michael Matthews as the best Aussie scorers in the Spanish Grand Tour (3 victories each). Back to back wins in La Vuelta were only achieved by John Degenkolb (2014) and Sam Bennett (2022) in recent years. Remco Evenepoel (Soudal Quick-Step) chased bonus seconds on the eve of another mountain showdown up the Alto de Javalambre.

It’s a nervous start from Morella, with a peloton wary of crosswinds that could turn the race upside down on the way to a seaside finish in Burriana. Eddie Dunbar (Jayco AlUla) crashes in the neutral start and is forced to abandon. Riders try to get away as soon as the flag drops but the peloton don’t give them any margin.

Fagundez shines for Uruguay

After 16 kilometres of battle, Eric Fagundez (Burgos-BH) sets off and makes the break of the day. At the end of his first season in the WorldTour, the young rider shows his colour at the front as the third Uruguayan to ever participate in La Vuelta.
After 60 kilometres of racing, the gap reaches a maximum of 5’30’’. Alpecin-Deceuninck drive the bunch with Jason Osborne setting the pace on the day after Kaden Groves won in Tarragona.

Sepulveda chases the KOM points
The gap is down to 1’50’’ at the bottom of the cat-2 climb up Collado de Ibola (to be summited with 53.7km to go). Already a history maker as the first Argentinian to ever lead a standing in a Grand Tour, Eduardo Sepulveda (Lotto Dstny) sets off to bridge the gap to Fagundez and score more KOM points ahead of another mountain stage on Thursday.
Sepulveda catches Fagundez with 3km to go to the summit and drops a kilometre further up the road. At the summit, the Argentinian rider takes 5 KOM points. The peloton trail by 1’08’’.

The intermediate sprint for Evenepoel, the bunch sprint for Groves

Fagundez is caught by the bunch with 41km to go. Sepulveda is still 20’’ ahead. He is caught 3 kilometres further, with Alpecin-Deceuninck still driving the bunch.
Remco Evenepoel (Soudal Quick-Step) makes the most of the intermediate sprint to take 6 bonus seconds ahead of Kaden Groves.
The intensity keeps rising until the last kilometre. Alpecin-Deceuninck launch the sprint for Groves, who delivers another victory just ahead of Filippo Ganna (Ineos Grenadiers).

Groves just loves Catalunya

First bunch sprint of La Vuelta 23, first success for the Australian rocket Kaden Groves! The sprinter from Alpecin-Deceuninck mastered a tricky finale in the streets of Tarragona to take his third Grand Tour win, the second in La Vuelta, and his fourth success in the area, after three stage wins in the Volta a Catalunya. Juan Sebastian Molano (UAE Team Emirates) tried to anticipate the uphill sprint but Groves followed him and passed him on the line. Remco Evenepoel (Soudal Quick-Step) retained La Roja he claimed in Andorra. Eduardo Sepulveda (Lotto Dstny) takes the polka dots and makes history as the first Argentinian leader of a Grand Tour standing.

On the day after the first mountain showdown of La Vuelta 23, the peloton head back to Catalunya and to the seaside, with 184.6km of racing to Tarragona.
Three riders attack as soon as the race begins. Eduardo Sepulveda (Lotto Dstny), on the hunt for KOM points to rightfully claim the polka-dot jersey he wears on loan from Remco Evenepoel (Soudal Quick-Step), is joined at the front by Ander Okamika (Burgos-BH) and David Gonzalez (Caja Rural-Seguros RGA).

Sepulveda makes history
The three leaders rapidly open a gap of 2’20’’. But Kaden Groves’ Alpecin-Deceuninck and Alberto Dainese’s DSM-Firmenich are also quick to react in order to control the gap at around 2 minutes.

The intensity picks up in the peloton ahead of the two climbs of the day, the cat-3 ascents up Alto de Belltall (to be summited with 53.8km to go) and Coll de Villa (30.6km). The gap is down to 1’20’’ as the bottom of the first climb. Sepulveda takes 3 KOM points at the summit.
The gap drops down to 30’’ on the following climb, but Sepulveda still takes 3 more KOM points to all but seal the polka-dot jersey. He makes history as the first Argentinian to ever lead a standing in a Grand Tour (his compatriot Bruno Sivilotti won stage 1a of La Vuelta in 1966, but he was riding as an Italian at the time, before he became Argentinian).

Coquard goes down, Groves powers up

Sepulveda is caught with 22km to go, while Okamika and Gonzalez keep pushing with a minimal gap. They’re caught 19km away from the finish. The tension rises in the bunch and a dozen of riders hit the deck inside the last 5 kilometres, including Bryan Coquard (Cofidis) and Santiago Buitrago (Bahrain Victorious).
Marijn van den Berg (EF Education-EasyPost) misses a turn as he tries to anticipate the uphill finish. Juan Sebastian Molano (UAE Team Emirates) opens up from far away but nobody can resist Kaden Groves.

Evenepoel strikes early

Remco Evenepoel (Soudal Quick-Step) came to La Vuelta 23 to defend his overall victory from 2022 and he immediately showed how strong he is this year again. On day 3, the Belgian superstar dominated the first summit finish of the 78th edition of the Spanish Grand Tour, atop the unprecedented ascent of Arinsal in Andorra. Not only did he get the best of Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma), Juan Ayuso (UAE Team Emirates) and Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) on the line, he also took La Roja as the new overall leader of the race. Enric Mas (Movistar) and French wonderkid Lenny Martinez (Groupama-FDJ) are his closest rivals in the general classification.

With a sunny start and high summits looming on the horizon, attackers launch a very hard battle for the break. It takes a flurry of accelerations and more than 35 kilometres for nine riders to escape: Damiano Caruso, Jasha Sütterlin (Bahrain Victorious), Amanuel Gehbreigzabhier (Lidl-Trek), Lennard Kämna (Bora-Hansgrohe), Eduardo Sepulveda (Lotto Dstny), Andrea Vendrame (AG2R Citroën), Rune Herregodts (Intermarché-Circus-Wanty), Pierre Latour (TotalEnergies) and Jon Barrenetxea (Caja Rural-Seguros RGA).

After 60 kilometres of hard racing, Mathis Le Berre (Arkea-Samsic) and Jose Manuel Diaz (Burgos-BH) join the earlier attackers to make it a 11-man breakaway. The gap is at its maximum: 5 minutes. And Damiano Caruso, a podium finisher in the Giro, only trailed by 23’’ in the overall standings ahead of the stage. Jumbo-Visma, Soudal Quick-Step and Ineos Grenadiers react and pull the bunch.

Caruso ups the ante

The race enters Andorra with 51.4km to go and the gap is down to under 3 minutes at the bottom of cat-1 climb to Coll d’Ordino (8.9km at 5.1%, leading to an altitude of 1,980m). Caruso ups the ante at the front. Only Sepulveda and Kämna can keep up while DSM-Firmenich drive the bunch.
Romain Bardet (DSM-Firmenich) sets off in the last 2 kilometres of ascent but Jumbo-Visma, Soudal Quick-Step and UAE Team Emirates control his moves. They trail by 1’05’’ at Coll d’Ordino (21.4km to go).

Evenepoel powers to La Roja
Caruso sets the pace on the downhill and Sepulveda is dropped. At the bottom of the final and unprecedented climb to Arinsal (8.3km at 7.7%), Caruso and Kämna are 1’20’’ away from the GC group. After a series of attacks, the German baroudeur eventually drops the Italian climber with 3km to go. Jay Vine (UAE Team Emirates) drives the bunch with a gap of 30’’.

Kämna is caught by nine riders with 2 kilometres to go. Marc Soler (UAE Team Emirates) tries to counter-attack. Sepp Kuss (Jumbo-Visma) controls his move… But nobody can match Remco Evenepoel’s acceleration inside the last 200 metres. The Belgian superstar powers to the stage win and claims La Roja.

Van Wilder und de Kleijn jubeln in Bremen, Organisatoren ziehen positives Fazit

Er übernahm das Rote Trikot auf der 1. Etappe nach Merzig und gab es bis zum Ende nicht mehr ab: Ilan Van Wilder (Soudal Quick-Step) hat die Deutschland Tour 2023 gewonnen. Auf dem finalen Teilstück über 175,6 Kilometer von Hannover nach Bremen ließ der Belgier nichts mehr anbrennen und rollte sicher im Feld über den Zielstrich der mit Tausenden Zuschauern gesäumten Konsul-Smidt-Straße. Den Tagessieg verbuchte Arvid de Kleijn (Tudor Pro Cycling) im Massensprint vor Phil Bauhaus (Bahrain Victorious) und Marius Mayrhofer (Team dsm-firmenich).

Die deutschen KT-Teams nutzten mit Silas Köch, Jan-Marc Temmen (beide Saris Rouvy Sauerland), Tobias Nolde, Dominik Röber (beide P&S Benotti) und Vinzent Dorn (Bike Aid) den flachen Kurs der letzten Etappe, um sich noch einmal zu präsentieren. 27 Kilometer vor dem Ziel waren sie bis auf Nolde gestellt. Der hielt noch etwas länger durch, wurde dann bei der Einfahrt nach Bremen aber auch eingeholt. Zwischenzeitlich war das Feld auf der Windkante für ein paar Kilometer in zwei Teile gerissen, doch auch das hatte auf den Ausgang keine Auswirkungen.

„Es war eine schöne Rennwoche voller Emotionen. Man muss ein kompletter Fahrer sein, um hier gewinnen zu können“, sagte Gesamtsieger Van Wilder auf der Abschlusspressekonferenz, der obendrein auch als bester Jungprofi mit dem Weißen Trikot ausgezeichnet wurde. „Elf Sekunden Vorsprung sind nicht viel, also war es schon noch ein bisschen stressig. Ich war so glücklich, als ich die Drei-Kilometer-Marke passiert hatte. Dann war ich sicher. Meine Eltern waren die ganze Woche hier, gestern auch meine Freundin. Ich bin froh, dass ich diese tollen Momente mit ihnen teilen konnte.“ Auch an den anderen Wertungen änderte sich nichts mehr: Van Wilders Teamkollege Ethan Vernon gewann das Grüne Trikot, Harm Vanhoucke behauptete am letzten Tag das Blaue Bergtrikot.

Das Organisationsteam der Deutschland Tour zog bereits ein positives Gesamtfazit. „Fürs Wetter können wir nichts, alles andere haben wir ganz gut gemacht“, resümierte Matthias Pietsch, Geschäftsführer der veranstaltenden Gesellschaft zur Förderung des Radsports (GFR). „Wir haben klasse Radsport gesehen. Wir hatten ein tolles Feld, große Namen, junge Fahrer, ein starkes Podium. Und gestern und heute wahnsinnig viele Zuschauer. Das stimmt positiv für die Entwicklung des Radsports. Wenn wir sehen, wo wir herkommen mit dem Re-Start der Deutschland Tour 2018, dann sind wir zu 100 Prozent auf dem richtigen Weg.“

Auch Fabian Wegmann, Sportlicher Leiter der Deutschland Tour, kam nicht umhin, den besonderen Zuschauerzuspruch zu loben. „Das war teilweise Tour-de-France-Feeling.“ Ihm war es aber auch wichtig, den größtenteils unfallfreien Ablauf des Rennens zu erwähnen. „Es ist alles supergut gelaufen. Danny Van Poppel feiert das erste Gesamtwertungspodium der Karriere bei der Deutschland Tour

Die Deutschland Tour wurde zum erwarteten Sekundenkrimi. Danny Van Poppel nutzte nach fünf Renntagen den letzten Bonussprint, um sich den 3. Platz in der Gesamtwertung zu sichern. Der Bruchteil einer Sekunde reichte für eine Premiere: erstmals in seiner Karriere beendet Van Poppel eine Rundfahrt auf dem GC-Podium.

Am letzten Wochenende zeigte Danny Van Poppel bereits in Hamburg die gute Form, mit der er zur Deutschland Tour reiste. Rang vier im Prolog und Top10-Platzierungen auf den ersten schweren Etappen wurden mit dem Sprint in Essen gekrönt. Nur knapp musste sich der 30-Jährige geschlagen geben.

Auch wenn der erhoffte Etappensieg dabei nicht heraussprang, machte Van Poppel einen Sprung in der Gesamtwertung und kam bis auf weniger als 3 Sekunden an das Podium heran. Der letzte Bonussprint der Rundfahrt wurde auf dem Zielkurs der Finaletappe in Bremen ausgetragen. Danny Van Poppel sicherte sich diesen Sprint und strich genau jene 3 Sekunden ein. Platz 3 bei der Deutschland Tour 2023!

Danny Van Poppel: „Heute war etwas Wind und das wollten wir ausnutzen. Leider hat es nicht geklappt und dann haben wir uns voll auf den Bonussprint konzentriert. Ich habe ihn gewonnen und damit den 3. Platz in der Gesamtwertung übernommen. Für mich ist das etwas ganz Besonderes, denn es ist mein erstes Podium in einer Gesamtwertung überhaupt. Ich bin kein Kletterer, deshalb bedeutet es mir und BORA – hansgrohe hier in Deutschland sehr viel. Unsere großen Ziele für die Deutschland Tour waren ein Etappensieg und das Podium der Gesamtwertung. Am Ende haben wir ein Ziel erreicht und gestern hätten wir fast die Etappe gewonnen. Ich denke, es war eine erfolgreiche Woche für uns.“

Montjuic crowns Kron

Andreas Kron (Lotto Dstny) made the most of his punch and of the iconic climb of Montjuic to solo to victory at the end of stage 2 of La Vuelta 23. The Dane attacked with 4 kilometres to go and nobody could keep up with him. Already a stage winner in the Volta a Catalunya 2021, he eventually took his first Grand Tour victory with a gap of 7’’ on Kaden Groves (Alpecin-Deceuninck), the fastest man in the chase group. Due to the rains pouring on Barcelona, the times for the general classification were taken with 9 kilometres to go. Part of the early breakaway, Andrea Piccolo (EF Education-EasyPost) was still at the front at that point – the 22 year-old Italian thus takes La Roja from his young compatriot Lorenzo Milesi (DSM-Firmenich), who suffered a crash earlier in the stage.

The race starts in very humid conditions with rains pouring in the Barcelona area, so much so that the start proper is pushed by 800 metres while it is established that the times for the general classification will be taken 9 kilometres before the finish.
The conditions don’t stop the attackers, who immediately find a suitable terrain to battle as the race starts with the cat-3 climb to Coll de Sant Bartomeu. Javier Romo (Astana Qazaqstan) takes the first KOM points, ahead of Joel Nicolau (Caja Rural-Seguros RGA) and Matteo Sobrero (Jayco AlUla). Andrea Piccolo (EF Education-EasyPost) and Jetse Bol (Burgos-BH) join them to make it a 5-man breakaway.

Attackers battle for the KOM points, DSM-Firmenich control
Lorenzo Milesi’s DSM-Firmenich drive the bunch. The gap hits a maximum of 3’24’’ at km 30 and drops down to 1’30’’ atop the cat-2 climb of Coll d’Estenalles (km 66.3). Sobrero goes first at the summit, bringing his tally to 6 points. Romo is tied with him but the Italian rouleur has the edge since he went first atop a cat-2 climb, while the Spaniard dominated a cat-3 ascent.
DSM-Firmenich keep controlling the situation on the downhill and the valley towards Barcelona. Jason Osborne (Alpecin-Deceuninck) supports them while a handful of favourites (Evenepoel, Thomas, Vingegaard…) are momentarily dropped due to mechanicals.

An intense finale crowns Kron
The intensity increases inside the last 40 kilometres. DSM-Firmenich push hard to defend their positions in the GC. Unfortunately, their British wonderkid Oscar Onley crashes out of the race and Lorenzo Milesi also hits the deck. The young Italian keeps on riding with blood on his left elbow.
While their breakaway companions are dropped, Piccolo (the best classified rider on GC among the attackers, with a gap of 6’’) and Romo (trailing by 17’’) reach the 9-km-to-go mark with a lead of 18’’. Groupama-FDJ then bring the peloton to them with 8km to go.

Andreas Kron (Lotto Dstny) attacks on the steepest ramps of the climb of Montjuic (0.9km at 9.4%) and nobody can follow the Danish puncheur, who soloes to victory ahead of Kaden Groves (Alpecin-Deceuninck), the fastest man from the chase group. Meanwhile, Piccolo safely makes it to the finish and takes La Roja as the new overall leader ahead of the first mountain stage of La Vuelta 23, on Monday in Andorra.

Milesi, from the rainbow to La Roja

From the world championships to La Vuelta, Lorenzo Milesi is enjoying a formidable August. The Italian youngster, winner of the rainbow jersey in the Under 23 individual time trial, is the first leader of the 78th edition of the Spanish Grand Tour after he led Team DSM-Firmenich to victory in the opening team time-trial. The German squad went early, as thunder roared over Barcelona, and nobody ever managed to overthrow them. Movistar came the closest, only trailing by half a second, while Remco Evenepoel’s Soudal Quick-Step lost 6’’ and Jumbo-Visma 32’’. La Vuelta 23 begins with a spectacular surprise!

The 78th edition of La Vuelta starts from Barcelona with a 14.8km team time trial visiting some of the most iconic areas of the city. The riders will start from the coast, on the Somorrostro beach, and ride through the city, passing by iconic monuments such as the Sagrada Familia, until the finish on the avenue Reina Maria Cristina, next to Plaza de España.

DSM-Firmenich set the reference in the rain

The first team to start is Caja Rural Seguros RGA, at 18:55, followed by DSM-Firmenich 4 minutes later, and then Lidl-Trek at 19:03. They do so under a grey sky, after a few sunny and hot days in Barcelona. The thunder roars and the rain wets the roads.
In these conditions, DSM-Firmenich set the first strong reference: 17’30’’ to cover the 14.8km with a powerhouse such as Lorenzo Milesi, the U23 ITT world champion crowned a couple of weeks ago in Scotland.

A very wet final kilometre
Arkea-Samsic have a much different experience when Hugo Hofstetter’s wheels slip in the final kilometres, taking down his leader Kevin Vauquelin, who drops over a minute. Bahrain Victorious (+10’’), EF Education-EasyPost (+6’’) and then Groupama-FDJ (+6’’) are more successful but DSM-Firmenich hold on to the best time.

The final kilometre is particularly wet, which also leads to crashes for Maurice Ballerstedt (Alpecin-Deceuninck) and Eddie Dunbar (Jayco-AlUla). Laurens De Plus goes down earlier in the race and Ineos Grenadiers finish with a time of 17’50’’ (+20’’).

Movistar come agonisingly close
Jumbo-Visma also struggle, trailing by 28’’ after 9.6km and eventually dropping 32’’ on the line. Enric Mas’ Movistar come much closer, only dropping half a second on the line! But when Remco Evenepoel’s Soudal Quick-Step finish with a gap of 6’’, DSM-Firmenich seal the win and Lorenzo Milesi takes La Roja.

Max Herrmanns persönliche „Tour de Belgien“

Baiersdorf – Der deutsche U19 Radsportler Max Herrmann, amtierender bayerischer Meister im Rundsteckenrennen, vom Baiersdorfer Radteam e.V., hat in den letzten Wochen im belgischen Straßenradsport für Aufsehen gesorgt. Herrmann, der seinen Sommerurlaub für eine persönliche „Tour de Belgien“ nutzte, konnte in verschiedenen Rennen gute Erfolge feiern.
In Bierbeek sicherte sich Herrmann bei einem spannenden Kirmesrennen den dritten Platz. Bei einem anderen Rennen in Dadizele zeigte der talentierte Fahrer Geschick und taktisches Verständnis, was ihm den Sprung in die Spitzengruppe und schließlich den fünften Platz einbrachte. Nicht lange danach kämpfte er sich in Huldenberg mutig alleine vom Hauptfeld ab, wurde jedoch kurz vor dem Ziel vom Peloton eingeholt und beendete das Rennen als Zehnter.

Bei einem spannenden Rennen in Sint-Lamprechts-Herk arbeitete er hervorragend mit vier anderen Radsportlern zusammen, setzte sich vom Hauptfeld ab und dominierte das Rennen. Letztlich sicherte er sich nach einem intensiven Zielsprint den beeindruckenden 2. Platz.
Seine Tour schloss er mit einem starken 4. Platz in Rumst ab. Trotz eines Feldes, das es Ausreißergruppen schwer machte, setzte er sich ab und schaffte einen bemerkenswerten vierten Platz, wobei ein Foto-Finish die Entscheidung brachte.

Herrmanns Leistungen in Belgien sind umso bedeutender, da er sich nach Verletzungen in der laufenden Saison in Deutschland auf sein erstes U23-Jahr vorbereitete. Die hohen Renndichte in kurzen Zeitabständen und die großen Startfelder der anspruchsvollen belgischen Rennen boten ihm die ideale Gelegenheit, sich für die bevorstehenden Herausforderungen zu wappnen.
Seine Leistungen im belgischen Straßenradsport haben gezeigt, dass Max Herrmann ein vielversprechender junger Radsportler ist und man darf gespannt sein, welche Erfolge seine Zukunft in der U23 und darüber hinaus bereithält.

Überraschungssieger Mihkels gewinnt im Pott und feiert größten Sieg der Karriere

Essen, 26. August – So richtig auf dem Zettel hatte ihn niemand, doch am Ende war er schneller als alle anderen: Im Zielsprint auf der Huyssenallee in Essen war Madis Mihkels (Intermarché – Circus – Wanty) nach 173,8 Kilometern auf der 3. Etappe deutlich stärker als der Zweitplatzierte Danny van Poppel (Bora – hansgrohe) und Quinten Hermans (Alpecin-Deceuninck) auf Rang 3. Der 20-Jährige zählt zu den jüngsten Siegern der Deutschland Tour.

„Ich war Außenseiter, aber ich habe wirklich daran geglaubt, dass es in diesem schweren Finale für mich reichen könnte“, sagte der estnische Tagessieger auf der Pressekonferenz. „Bei noch 300 Metern war der Bora-Sprintzug vor mir schon mit Vollspeed unterwegs. Und da habe ich gemerkt, dass ich noch viel mehr in den Beinen habe“, so Mihkels, der in seiner bisherigen Profi-Karriere lediglich einen Etappensieg bei der Estland-Rundfahrt aufweisen konnte. „Das ist bisher zweifellos mein größter Erfolg.“

Als Erfolg kann auch Ilan Van Wilder (Soudal Quick-Step) die Deutschland Tour schon jetzt verbuchen. Der Belgier hat keine Zeit auf seine ärgsten Konkurrenten verloren und das Rote Trikot des Gesamtführenden verteidigt. „Ich habe versucht, am Bonussprint noch ein paar Sekunden zu holen, aber das hat nicht geklappt. Trotzdem sieht es gut aus, aber ich möchte mich nicht zu früh freuen. Ich werde einfach nur versuchen, mich morgen aus allem herauszuhalten und sicher durchzukommen.“

Van Wilders Teamkollege Ethan Vernon hat sich als Tagesfünfter mit den entsprechenden Punkten dafür das Grüne Trikot zurückerobert, das er bereits an den ersten zwei Tagen getragen hatte. Harm Vanhoucke (Lotto Dstny) hat sein Bergtrikot einen weiteren Tag verteidigt, kann aber morgen noch von Florian Stork (Team dsm-firmenich) abgefangen werden.

Der hatte sich die erste Bergwertung kurz nach dem Start in Arnsberg gesichert. Nach mehreren erfolglosen Attacken bildete sich erst nach der Eule in Fröndenberg eine Gruppe. Zu Mattéo Vercher (TotalEnergies) gesellten sich Juri Hollmann (Movistar Team) und Frank van den Broek (Team dsm-firmenich). Mehr als drei Minuten bekamen die Ausreißer vom Feld aber nicht zugesprochen.

Kurz nach der zweiten Bergwertung am Sender Langenberg war das Trio gestellt. Dafür setzte sich wenig später 66 Kilometer vor dem Ziel ein neues Spitzenduo um Michael Gogl (Alpecin-Deceuninck) und Fabien Grellier (TotalEnergies) ab. Knapp 30 Kilometer später waren aber auch die beiden wieder eingefangen. An der nächsten Welle versuchte sich Anthony Turgis (TotalEnergies). Der schaffte es bis auf den Rundkurs, wurde aber zehn Kilometer vor dem Ende vom Feld geschluckt. Dann musste der Massensprint entscheiden.

Tijl De Decker (Lotto-Dstny) nach Trainingsunfall verstorben

2 Tage nach einem Trainingsunfall ist Tijl De Decker an den Folgen seiner schweren Verletzungen verstorben. Sein Team Lotto – Dstny meldete den Tod des 22-jährigen Belgiers am Freitag in den Sozialen Medien.

De Decker war während einer Trainingseinheit am Mittwoch mit einem Pkw kollidiert und soll bei dem Unfall viel Blut verloren haben. Nach einer Meldung der Zeitung Het Nieuwsblad lag der Nachwuchsfahrer seitdem im Koma. Wie sein Team später erklärte, sei De Decker von hinten gegen ein Fahrzeug geprallt und nach seinem Transport ins Krankenhaus von Lier sofort operiert worden. Anschließend wurde er in die Universitätsklinik von Antwerpen verlegt.

De Decker gewann in dieser Saison die U23-Ausgabe von Paris-Roubaix und sollte zum 1. Januar 2024 vom U23-Team in die Profimannschaft von Lotto – Dstny aufrücken. Beim belgischen Zweitdivisionär hatte er einen Zweijahresvertrag unterschrieben.

Das Team hat bereits den zweiten tragischen Todesfall innerhalb von nur vier Jahren zu beklagen. Am 5. August 2019 verunglückte De Deckers Landsmann Bjorg Lambrecht im Alter von ebenfalls 22 Jahren auf der 3. Etappe der Polen-Rundfahrt tödlich.
