Fabian Cancellara (RadioShack-Leopard) won his pre-world championship match against Tony Martin (Omega Pharma-Quick Step) as he claimed the only individual time trial of the Vuelta and was delighted to take the power back in the world of specialists against the clock. As expected, the other duel for the leadership in the race saw Vincenzo Nibali (Astana) taking over from Chris Horner (RadioShack-Leopard) who is now fourth on GC with Nicolas Roche (Saxo-Tinkoff) and Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) in between. But the ambitions of the American veteran to win the Vuelta are far from over.

Nibali was 48 seconds down before stage 11. It’s now up to Horner to stand 46 seconds adrift. Little Italian climber Domenico Pozzovivo (AG2R-La Mondiale) is the author of the exploit of the day. As he passed first atop the third category Alto del Moncayo, he only lost terrain against pure powerful time trial specialists Cancellara and Martin to clock the third best time and move up to sixth overall.
Valverde remained third despite suffering a mechanical in the early uphill part of the race. His compatriot Joaquim Rodriguez (Katusha) lost three minutes from Cancellara because his bidon fell off at the start. He’s still fifth on GC but 2.33 down on Nibali.
Stage 12 from Maella to Tarragona (164.2 km) suits the sprinters on paper.
