In this autumn classic around Legnano in Lombardy, the climb to Morazzone/Piccolo Stelvio was to be contested seven times on the middle section of the course before the finish line was reached in front of the city castle. A break was able to hold on to the lead for a considerable time before a trio managed to catch up with the remaining escapees on the penultimate climb. On the final descent, more riders joined the leaders while BORA – hansgrohe in the peloton at a minute back. An increase in pace in the field brought the race back together with 25km to go, and as further attacks were quickly thwarted by the field, in the end it came down to a sprint finish. D. Ballerini took the day’s win while Patrick Konrad was the best rider from the squad from Raubling.
From the Finish Line
„The race was pretty well controlled by the sprinters‘ teams all day, except the last 3.5 laps where Quickstep tried to open up proceedings somewhat, with attacks from Alaphilippe. Throughout this, our riders were in the main field. As we approached the finale, the race came back together and we knew that we don’t have a real sprinter here, but we tried to send Frederik and teammates to do the sprint as best as possible. Unluckily at the last corner, a Trek Segafredo rider crashed in front of Patrick Konrad and we weren’t able to sprint for a top ten result. Our first few races in Italy didn’t go as well as they could have, but tomorrow is another chance for us.“- Enrico Gasparotto, Sports Director
