Tour de France: Danny Van Poppel not in last week

After a strong performance in the first two weeks of the Tour de France, Danny Van Poppel won’t start in tomorrows 16th stage. The youngster sprinted to three top ten places, wore the white jersey and took a few giant leaps in his development as a rider. “There is no added value in continuing the race for Danny”, Vacansoleil-DCM team manager Daan Luijkx explains. The decision was taken on the morning of the second rest day after deliberation with the rider, the medical staff and the team management. “He has reached his goals, and has gone even beyond that. We will be focussing on new targets now, starting with the Eneco Tour.” Van Poppel’s team Vacansoleil-DCM had planned several moments of evaluation during the Tour de France, each time carefully assessing the continued participation of the young talent. DS Aart Vierhouten: “Physically speaking, Danny is ‘normally fatigued’ after two weeks in the Tour de France. On Mont Ventoux yesterday he finished even before the grupetto, despite a wheel and a bike change. For a 19-year-old he has performed exceptionally well, and we have enjoyed having him here for two weeks. He was here to learn the ropes and he has more than done so. He may very well be capable of reaching Paris, but there are still heavy stages ahead. That’s why we prefer to protect him and carefully set new targets.” Today was also the day of Vacansoleil-DCM’s traditional mussels party. Van Poppel was still present to conclude his first participation in the Tour de France in style. The son of Jean-Paul and brother of Boy Van Poppel will be returning home tomorrow. “There is a hard week ahead”, the rider himself explains the decision. “There is more than just the Tour, and that also has to be taken into account. I think my performances and coming so far have been a pleasant surprise to many.”

Marcel Kittel makes it three wins for Team Argos-Shimano with stage 12 victory

Today’s stage 12 of the Tour ended with another very hectic sprint, but the team took control and Marcel Kittel stayed calm and sprinted to his third victory. Tuesday he had already become the most successful rider in this year’s Tour, with two individual victories, but today he further underlined his status as one of the peloton’s top sprinters.

The stage again featured an early escape by a group. As the finale approached, all the riders in the break except Juan Antonio Flecha (ESP) were caught. Flecha tried to go it alone, but in the final 5km he too was reeled in by the chasing bunch.

Team Argos-Shimano helped control the peloton. In the finale the train was running at full speed to deliver Kittel to the victory. With 5km to go Albert Timmer (NED) moved to the right, created some space and prepared the train to accelerate when the other riders took over. The train started early, but the team delivered Kittel to a good position so he could finish the job in the end.

“This win today means a lot to me,” said Kittel. “It’s the third win for the team, which is incredible. The team again did a really good job. They worked hard and kept me out of the wind all day. In the final kilometers it was our train against Omega Pharma – Quick-Step. When the last lead-out man pulled off I jumped to the right wheels and had a very good position when Mark Cavendish (GBR) started the sprint. I stayed calm and was able to overtake him in the end, but it was very close.

“Today it was great to beat Cavendish in a straightforward sprint. In the final 200m I was able to sit on his wheel. We started the sprint together, and I had the best punch at the end.
“We’ve done a good job so far, and I’m proud to know that I can beat the world’s best. Before the Tour we knew the team worked and we had prepared well, but when everything falls into place like this it is incredible. We’ve been working a long time for this, so these three wins are a big reward.”

“Victory number three is as beautiful as the first two,” said Team Manager Iwan Spekenbrink right after the race. “Marcel and the team are just outstanding at the moment. All our preparations and efforts have come together in this Tour de France, which makes it even more beautiful. We see that teamwork can make the difference, especially in sprinting. That’s why we’ve spent so much time and effort bringing the right individuals together and helping them develop them in their positions, training on tactics, and giving them full guidance.”

“Incredible! What a day,” said coach Rudi Kemna. “We knew we had a good opportunity again today with Marcel, so we took responsibility and helped control the race. Marcel is in top shape at the moment, so even in a long, straight finish he is really strong and fast. The team around him also contributed to this success, of course, and with this third win we can see that our way of working really pays off.

“You can see that our guys are getting more confident and believe in themselves. With success comes more pressure, but we can handle it and we are happy to get this pressure. Hopefully this well-oiled machine will keep on rolling and we can aim for more success.”

Marcel Kittel took his second Tour victory in the 10th stage after a very chaotic and hectic sprint.

The team took control early in the race, and the train was visible at the front of the race during the final 20km. After hiding briefly in the bunch, the train reappeared for the final 3km to position Marcel Kittel. The sprint was not without any problems, as lead-out man Veelers crashed after a clash with Mark Cavendish. But Kittel stayed relaxed and accelerated and outsprinted Andre Greipel to take the win.

As expected, a break rode out in front of the bunch during most of the stage. As the race progressed, some Team Argos-Shimano riders joined several other sprinters’ and GC riders’ teams to control the bunch and keep the gap to the break in check. The riders in the break were caught by the chasing peloton which had aimed for a bunch sprint right from the start.

„I am thrilled that I won this stage today, but when I crossed the finish line I was also very worried about my teammate Tom Veelers. Luckily he his OK, so now I can really enjoy this victory,“ said Marcel Kittel.

„This was a very good win for the team after amazing and strong teamwork. The guys worked very hard throughout the whole day to keep me in front and out of the wind. When the finale started, we were really well positioned as a team. These finishes are very hectic and chaotic, so it is really impressive work that the guys did. In the end I didn’t have to waste any energy and was able to start my sprint fresh.

„It is just as special as the first one, but mostly because this time none of the other sprinters were involved in a crash and we could really battle against each other. That I was the fastest today gives me a lot of confidence and a very satisfying feeling.

„This tour is successful already, with two stage wins and having the yellow, green and white jerseys. It’s a dream come true, and I’m happy that I can experience this with this team. Now we will concentrate on the other stages and see how they go. We don’t have any pressure anymore.“

“That was a pretty hectic sprint and a rough fall, but aside from some missing skin I am OK,” said Veelers about his crash. “Marcel’s win will definitely help, and hopefully I’ll get a good night’s sleep as well.”

“It’s fantastic to see how strong teamwork led to the win by Marcel“, said Rudi Kemna, “we had some problems in the last meters with Tom’s crash, but the preparation before that went perfectly to plan, and seeing how relaxed and focused Marcel stayed shows how good and experienced he is.

“Last week we saw already that the train was working quite well, but there were still some points to improve. So during the rest day we sat down with all the team’s experts and the riders to analyze the sprint to see what exactly we needed to improve. We changed the positions of John Degenkolb and Koen de Kort, and we were very careful to get the timing optimized with this change. This, together with the final adjustments and the fact that we have a balanced team where every rider is developed in his own specialty, has made today’s success possible. Again, it’s a great reward after many years of work and belief in our way of working,” said coach Rudi Kemna.

“To win the first stage was already amazing, but taking a second stage victory is incredible. I am really proud of this win, but even prouder of the way we achieved it. This is a reward after hard teamwork, not only with the riders but also the coaches, experts and staff. It has been great to see Marcel develop through the years, with the guidance of our experts and coaches. After tests and training, our coaches discovered his sprinting talent and decided to give him the opportunity to develop as a sprinter. Step-by-step he became better, and it didn’t take long until he won his first race. This is Marcel’s story, but with all the riders of Team Argos-Shimano we have gone through this process and developed them in their specialty, and optimized the tactical co-operation between the riders in the race, which makes our train so strong,” said a delighted team manager Iwan Spekenbrink.
