Trento could hardly have asked for a better opening of the UEC Road European Championships – Trentino 2021. On Wednesday, September 8th, the home Italy team offered to the fans a joy to behold, as Filippo Ganna and his teammate finalized a superb performance with the gold medal in the European Team Relay, securing the first medal for Italy in the event, much to the delight of many fans in the Le Albere district in Trento, just a few steps from the famous MUSE – Museum of Sciences.

In the 44.8 km test – two laps of the 22.4 km course on which all the time trials are contested at Trentino 2021 are held – the team made by Filippo Ganna, Alessandro De Marchi, Matteo Sobrero, Elisa Longo Borghini, Marta Cavalli and Elena Cecchini managed to leave behind Germany and the Netherlands, unsurprisingly the last two winners of the European team event. In two weeks in Leuven (Belgium), the format will also make its debut at the World Championships.

Italy made the most of the contribution by Filippo Ganna, who was generous in this first effort of his very intense European Championships’ schedule: the menu of the Tokyo Olympic Champion also includes the individual time trial on Thursday September 9th and the road race Sunday 12th.
After the men’s trio had passed the baton in first position, Longo Borghini, Cavalli and Cecchini delivered a strong effort on their own, finalizing in 51:59:01. In the background, the orchards and vineyards of Romagnano, Aldeno and Mattarello made an amazing show of themselves in a sunny afternoon, offering a first memorable postcard of Trentino to the many Countries connected with the European Championships on TV, either live or delayed.
The Germany team of Miguel Heidemann, Justin Wolf, Richard Maximilian Walscheid, Corinna Lechner, Mieke Kroger and Tanja Erath had to settle for second place with a gap of 21 seconds from the winners. The Netherlands (Koen Bouwman, Jos Van Emden, Bauke Mollema, Floortjie Mackaij, Amy Pieters and Demi Vollering) took the third step of the podium, stopping the time at 27 seconds from the Italian national team.

The Italian National anthem concluded the racing part of the first of five days of competition between Trento, Monte Bondone and the Valle dei Laghi, which awarded the first three of the thirteen titles of the most impressive European Road Championships’ edition to date. However, the special atmosphere at MUSE has continued, as on Wednesday the Science Museum of Trento celebrates the European Championships with an extended opening until 11 pm.

For Ganna and the whole Italian team, today’s victory represents an excellent start in view of the next races, which could already add to the home team’s tally. “Tomorrow it’s already ITT time, but I really wanted to take in this test, which was also useful for taking stock of the course. Tomorrow there will be plenty of strong rivals to face, as Küng wants to defend the jersey, Evenepoel has shown that he is back to his best after the crash at Lombardia, and Tadej Pogacar needs no introduction too: it will be full gas down to the final meter,“ stated the Time Trial World Champion.

Elisa Longo Borghini could also celebrated a long-pursued European Champions’ jersey. “I am excited for this result, and even more for having obtained it in a team race: I believe these races give a measure to the value of a team, and of a whole movement in this case. I hope that more and more youngsters will be inspired to get into cycling, also thanks to days like this.”

BELGIAN DOMINATION IN JUNIOR MEN’S TIME TRIAL

3 LE HUITOUZE Eddy FRA FRANCE 00:40

In the morning, the Belgian National team scored a beautiful double in the Junior Men’s Individual Time Trial, on the 22.4 km course from the MUSE – Museum of Sciences to Piazza delle Donne Lavoratrici. Alec Segaert defeated the competition and earned the European Champion’s jersey by clocking a 26:26:61 time. Second came fellow Belgian sensation Cian Uijtderbroeks, who had beaten Segaert in the Junior Time Trial at the Belgian National Championships: this time, he finished just 5 seconds shy of the compatriot. The third step of the podium was conquered by French Eddy Le Huitouze, at 40 seconds.

„It is incredible to be able to win here, – commented Alec Segaert after the finish line. „In the first part I went very fast, maybe even too fast, but from the team car they kept telling me I was flying, and this motivated me even more. I was completely done at the finish, but the victory pays off for anything. At the Belgian Championships I had finished second behind Cian, today it was finally my turn.“

ALENA IVANCHENKO EXTENDS TRACK SUCCESS TO THE ROAD

Netherlands’ Elise Uijen could not retain the Junior Women’s Individual Time Trial title in Trento, as it was Alena Ivanchenko to take over the jersey. The Russian made a powerful showing of the skills already displayed on the track on the pan-flat 22.4 km effort. Ivanchenko stopped the clock on 29:11:82, beating German Antonia Niedermaier by 31 seconds, and Elise Uijen by 53 seconds.

For Ivanchenko this was the third prestigious success in just over three weeks, after having graduated World Champion in the Points Race at the Junior Track Cycling World Championships in Cairo (Egypt) and having won the European Champion jersey in the same specialty at the European Youth Track Cycling Championships in Apeldoorn (Netherlands).

UEC Road European Cycling Championships 2021

Buongiorno Trento: Day 1 – Get the party started I Press Release September 8th, 2021

Good morning from the UEC Road European Cycling Championships. Finally, the long wait is over, and after the long months of preparation, Trento and its territory are ready to live five days of races with great technical and spectacular content.
As traditional, the continental event (8-12 September) gets off in the morning of Wednesday, September 8th with the time trials for the Junior categories: Women start at 9.15 AM CET, followed by Men at 10.45 AM CET.

In the early afternoon, at 2.30 PM CET, it will be the turn of the Team Relay, with 8 competing teams with six riders each (three men and three women).

THE COURSE – THE HIGH-SPEED CHALLENGE STARTS FROM THE MUSE
The time trials’ route at the Trentino 2021 European Championships is perfectly suited to specialists in the discipline, capable of pushing long gears and developing high speeds.
Starting from the MUSE-Museo delle Scienze in Trento, and finishing in the near Piazza delle Donne Lavoratrici, the pan-flat 22.4km loop crosses the towns of Romagnano, Matterello and Aldeno, an area rich of high-quality vineyards.
In the afternoon’s Team Relay, the riders will be engaged over two laps of the TT course, for a total distance of 44.8 km.

A LAND TO DISCOVER – BETWEEN SCIENCE AND WINE
The starting point for all the time trials is the MUSE, the Science Museum of Trento, designed by Renzo Piano like the whole Le Albere district that surrounds it. The Museum offers a journey of discovery through science and nature over five floors and an impressive variety of experiences.
Opened in 2013, in just a few years MUSE has become one of the most visited museums in the Country (and the most popular among science museums) with over 500,000 visitors every year from all over the world.
The time trial route runs through an area renowned for the production of wines such as Traminer and Trento Doc from Aldeno. The area around Trento is also famous for the cultivation and production of Marzemino, a grape variety that has found its ideal habitat in the basaltic soils of the lower Trentino region. Marzemino harmonizes a gentle perfume and a round taste tending towards bitterness.

THE PROTAGONISTS – GREAT EXPECTATIONS FOR TOP PROSPECT UIJTDEBROECKS
There’s growing expectations for the Junior races, since the trend for precocious talents in World cycling has become evident in recent years.
In the Junior men’s TT race, Cian Uijtdebroecks seems to have the odds stacked against him. Following in the footsteps of Remco Evenepoel, the new golden boy of Belgian cycling will try to make his mark against some of the brightest talents in world cycling. Among his rivals, Norwegian Per Strand Hargenes might be one of the names to watch.
The Junior Women’s race could be open to more solutions: challenging the defending Champiion, Dutch Elise Uijen, are German Linda Riedmann, Swiss Noelle Ruetschi and Italian Carlotta Cipressi, bronze a year ago in Plouay.
Having become a part of the European Championships’ programme just in 2019, the Team Relay will be a big goal for several strong teams, including Italy, that will be playing up some of its best cards.
Netherlands (2019) and Germany (2020) have won the first two editions, but this time in Trento it could be time for the home Azzurri to celebrate: the line-up of made by Time Trial World Champion Filippo Ganna, Time Trial Italian Champion Matteo Sobrero, Alessandro De Marchi, Elisa Longo Borghini, Marta Cavalli and Elena Cecchini look poised for something big.

WEATHER FORECAST
Good news for the riders, as sun is expected on the course on Wednesday August 8th. A temperature of 20 degrees is forecast for the morning, rising to 24-25 degrees in the early afternoon.

2021 UEC Road European Championships

European stars to shine in Trento in continental titles’ pursuit

The land of cycling champions like Francesco Moser, Maurizio Fondriest and Gilberto Simoni, Trentino will host the UEC Road European Championships in Trento, Monte Bondone and Valle dei Laghi from September 8th to 12th, 2021.
After a season affected by the pandemic, the European Road Cycling Championships will be among the highlights of a sensational season for Trentino, whose program was officially presented in Milan on Monday, July 12th, 2021, at the Fondazione Riccardo Catella.
During the 2021 summer, Val di Sole will host the UCI Mountain Bike World Championships in Daolasa di Commezzadura, Trentino (August 25-29), before handing over to Trento for the quest for the Road European Champion’s jerseys from September 8th to 12th, 2021.

Welcomed by Trentino’s Sports Assessor Roberto Failoni, Trentino Marketing’s President and CEO, Gianni Battaiola and Maurizio Rossini, Trento, Bondone, Valle dei Laghi Tourist Board’s President Franco Aldo Bertagnolli, Val di Sole Tourist Board Director Fabio Sacco, UCI Vice-President Renato Di Rocco, UEC (Union Européenne de Cyclisme) President Enrico Della Casa and Italian Cycling Federation President Cordiano Dagnoni attended the event.
Among the guests were also the Mayor of Trento Franco Ianeselli, the Vice-Mayor of Commezzadura Marco Podetti, Italian MTB National Team Coach Mirko Celestino, CPA (Cyclistes Professionnels Associés) President Gianni Bugno, the Managing Director of European Road Cycling Championships Trentino 2021 Maurizio Evangelista, MTB athletes Eleonora Farina and Chiara Teocchi and former cycling champions Francesco Moser and Gilberto Simoni. Italian National Olympic Committee President Giovanni Malagò and Road Cycling National Team Coach Davide Cassani also sent a video message.

In recent years, the European Championships have gained prestige and traction under the aegis of UEC (Union Européenne de Cyclisme), as confirmed by the roll of honor embellished by the name of champions such as Peter Sagan, Alexander Kristoff, Anna van der Breggen, Marianne Vos, Annemiek Van Vleuten and Italian Matteo Trentin, Elia Viviani and Giacomo Nizzolo.
With 13 titles for grabs over five days of competition, the Road European Championships will bring to Trentino over 800 athletes across the Junior, U23 and Elite categories. Scheduled between the Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan, and the World Championships in Leuven, Belgium, the continental event organized by Trento, Monte Bondone and Valle dei Laghi Tourist Board, in close collaboration with Trentino Marketing, the Municipality of Trento and Trento Eventi Sport, will be hunting ground for punchy all-rounders.

To win on the charming finish line in Trento’s Piazza Duomo, the riders will need to get creative on the technical build-up or use their fast finish. The imagination: a thrilling and entertaining battle should be in the cards for September’s clashes.
For the first time, the Province of Trento will assign an international road cycling title. There is still the exclusive taste of a first time for an area well accustomed to the maximum levels of this sport.

13 TITLES OVER FIVE DAYS
From September 8th to 12th, 2021, a great show is expected on the European Championships courses. Five days of competition and thirteen titles to be awarded (six for men, six for women, and the Team Relay) with the Elite Men’s Road race as the grand finale. With 179,2 km of length, the Elite Men’s race will face the starting in-line section that crosses the Valle dei Laghi, and the famous climb of Monte Bondone from the Sopramonte/Candriai side. From the top, the riders will take a downhill slope towards Trento, where they will face eight laps of the 13,2 km city circuit with the Povo climb (3,6 km at 4,7%).
On the previous days, the city circuit will host the other European Championships races with start and finish in Piazza Duomo, while the time trials will take off from the MUSE – Sciences Museum in Trento, with the finish line located in Piazza delle Donne Lavoratrici, taking place on a flat and fast course, suited to the specialists of the discipline.

THE RISE OF THE EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS
The Road European Championships were first contested 25 years ago (1995), and have grown in prominence in recent years thanks to the commitment of the UEC (Union Européenne de Cyclisme) in valorizing the tradition of cycling in Europe, where the sport was born and raised.
Since 2016, the European Champions of all categories have worn the champion’s jersey for an entire season. After the victory of Peter Sagan (2016) and Alexander Kristoff (2017), three Italian riders in a row claimed the Men’s Elite title: Matteo Trentin in Glasgow (2018), Elia Viviani in Alkmaar (2019), and Giacomo Nizzolo in Plouay (2020).
A POSTCARD FROM TRENTINO
After the renouncement to the 2020 edition due to the Covid-19 situation and the postponement to 2021, Trentino looks at the European Road Cycling Championships as a perfect showcase to display its beautiful landscapes. Thanks to the Eurovision TV coverage and the use of innovative solutions, the continental event will be broadcast in 71 Countries, exceeding the 14 million viewers registered in 2020.

“It will be a great showcase for Trentino, as well as for the city of Trento and the green landscapes that surround it, enhanced by the race finishes held in the innovative Albere district and the heart of the city, in Piazza Duomo. This initiative was made possible by the perfect collaboration with the city administration led by Mayor Franco Ianeselli. Once again, Trento confirms its sporting spirit on the great occasion”, said Franco Aldo Bertagnolli, President of Trento, Monte Bondone, Valle dei Laghi Tourist Board.
QUOTES

ROBERTO FAILONI (Trentino’s Tourism and Sport Assessor): “Cycling in Trentino has a long and successful history, but this season will be a memorable one. After a tough year, this amazing programme of events serves as a boost for the restart, in the name of Trentino’s organizational capacity, supported by the marketing and communication investments that are pushing us towards summer of good results.”

GIANNI BATTAIOLA (Trentino Marketing President): “We are all in need of normality, and we want to show to the whole World that our territory can be reached and enjoyed in full safety. We want to show what Trentino can give, making the most of the opportunity coming from these major events.”

MAURIZIO ROSSINI (CEO Trentino Marketing): “The Trentino 2021 European Championships and the MTB World Championships in Val di Sole are a challenge that Trentino is eager to take. In this year of restart, we are showing how strong the roots that bind us to cycling and bicycles are. From our history of great events to a great cycling offer for all two-wheels lovers, cycling always finds its elected land in Trentino.”

GIOVANNI MALAGO’ (Italian National Olympic Commitee President): “Our Olympic Committee is proud of those who, like the Trentino’s organizers, commit for the prestige of our sports movement with World-class events. We are grateful to who brings such added value to Italian sports as a whole.”

RENATO DI ROCCO (UCI Vice President): “Trentino has showed to believe in cycling and showed it in plenty of occasions. It’s a long history of professionality and success, and I have no doubt that the MTB World Championships and the Road European Championships will add new gems to this collection.”

CORDIANO DAGNONI (Italian Cycling Federation President): “There’s great synergy between our Federation and Trentino, a land of cycling champions and great organizational skills. This 2021 summer will be a major showcase for our Italian cycling movement.”

MAURIZIO EVANGELISTA (Managing Director Euroroad 2021): “It is going to be a spectacular European Championship for the beauty of its courses and its locations. The races will live starts and finishes in places of great significant in Trento, and the Elite Men’s race will also cross the charming Valle dei Laghi and climb iconic Monte Bondone. The distance under 180 km will result into explosive races, that will enhance the technical prestige of the events and possibly stage a challenge between different generations.”

DAVIDE CASSANI (Italian Road National Team Coach): “Congrats to Trentino for the exceptional value of the events they keep on staging, from the great festival of the MTB World Championships to a European Road Championship where we’ll try to repeat the feats of the last three editions. It’s a route suited for fast athletes, but they’ll have to work for a their opportunity on a technical and entertaining course.”

2020 Road Euro Champs in Trento: the sports city gets on saddle

The 2020 UEC Road European Championships (September 9-13, 2020) were presented in Milan, part of a memorable season that also features the World Championships and the Olympic Games. Over 800 riders and an extensive media coverage are expected to turn the spotlights on the beauties of Trento, Monte Bondone and the Lakes Valley (Valle dei Laghi)
Renowned as the city of sports after the resounding success of 2018 “Festival dello Sport” (set to return with the second edition from October 10 to 13), Trento further extends its perspective. Main center and symbol of a province that welcomes over 4.5 million visitors (2018) from all over the World between Summer and Winter, famous for its university and a youth-oriented pole, Trento now takes in another high-profile challenge by hosting the 2020 UEC Road European Championships from September 9th to 13th, 2020.

With due advance, the organizing committee headed by the Trento Monte Bondone Valle dei Laghi Tourist Board, in collaboration with the Province of Trento, the Municipality of Trento and Trentino Marketing, presented today – Monday June 10th – at the Sala Buzzati in Milan the official logo and the courses where no less than 13 titles (6 men, 6 women, 1 team) will be awarded, with the Elite Men Road Race set to close the program.
A STRATEGIC CHOISE IN AN EXCITING SEASON
In between the Olympic race in Tokyo and the World Championships in Switzerland, the 2020 Euro Road Championships will mark the fourth time such event is hosted by Italy – after Bergamo 2002, Verbania 2008 and Offida 2011 – and do so in a peculiar and loaded season.
As a consequence, it is important for the main protagonists to know the technical proposal in advance, so to be able to program their season based on the most suitable goals. Based on the fact that both the Olympic race and the Worlds will take place on very challenging, climber-oriented courses, the choice of “Trentino 2020” was to chart technically demanding routes, but whose difficulty will certainly be lower, so to attract the attention of strong fast men, who are likely to be ruled out of contention in the other major fixtures. More than sprinters: champions with a fast finish, and able to hold their own on every terrain.
THE EUROPEAN TITLE IS REAL CHAMPIONS‘ BUSINESS
The Road European Championship was first contested 25 years ago (1995), and has grown in relevance in recent years, also thanks to the rise in prominence by the UEC (Union Européenne de Cyclisme) in its quest to valorize the tradition of cycling in Europe – where the sport was born and raised – in a time when several realities with less tradition but strong economic potential keep landing on the World cycling calendar.
A testament of the value of the European title, and of the jersey the winners earn the honor to wear for a whole year, is the stature of the Elite Men Road Race winners in the last three years. In France 2016, Peter Sagan saw off Julien Alaphilippe; in Denmark 2017, Alexander Kristoff beat Elia Viviani; in 2018, in Glasgow, Matteo Trentin earned the honors ahead of Mathieu Van der Poel, the latter to be considered a top favorite for the 2019 edition in his own land, in Alkmaar (Netherlands) in early August.

TRENTIN AND PATERNOSTER TO LEAD THE ITALIAN CHARGE
The top names of International cycling from the Old. Continent look at the European Championship as a main goal of the season, and the fact that the reigning European Champion, Matteo Trentin, hails from Trentino further raises the expectation for the 2020 edition, even more if we consider what Trentino has represented for Italian cycling (and currently does).

Champions like Moser, Fondriest, Simoni have left a remarkable legacy, picked up today by Trentin, Gianni Moscon, Daniel Oss, Cesare Benedetti, Nicola Conci, and the beautiful Letizia Paternoster, young princess of Women’s cycling. With 3000 registered athletes and roughly 100 affiliated teams in a province counting barely 500.000 people, Trentino is arguably the most fruitful area for Italian cycling, considering the quantity and quality of talent it generates.
HISTORY, CULTURE, NATURE, INNOVATION: AN EVENT FOR EVERYBODY
“2020 UEC Road European Championships – Trentino 2020” is the official naming of the event, whose most iconic location will be the breathtaking scenery of Piazza Duomo, that already hosted big cycling events in the recent past, like the yearly fixture of “La Leggendaria Charly Gaul – UCI Granfondo World Series”, 2013 Amateur and Master World Championship, the final stage of 2017 Tour of the Alps, with the awarding ceremony of eventual Tour de France winner Geraint Thomas, and the start of the Giro d’Italia time trial in 2018.
The race courses – time trial and road races for the Elite, Under 23 category, both men and women, and the team relay – will pass through significant locations of the city of Trento, the Lakes Valley (Valle dei Laghi) and the Monte Bondone, enhancing culture (Buonconsiglio Castle and the many historical sites), nature (the Toblino and Cavedine lakes – among others – the western slopes of the Monte Bondone) and the symbols of research and innovation (the Albere district, the MUSE – Sciences Museum, the Bruno Kessler Foundation in Povo and the Engineering Faculty in Mesiano).

SHORTER RACES FOR A WORLDWIDE TV SHOW

All the races will move from and finish in Piazza Duomo, with the exception of the time trials, starting from the MUSE – Sciences Museum in Trento. The UEC made an option to reduce the length of the races, and his will apply also to the Men Elite Road Race, to be contested on a 180 km distance, with a roughly 70-km in-line stretch featuring the Passo San Udalrico and Monte Bondone climbs, before entering the final circuit to be covered seven times, with the Povo climb as the only difficulty on the profile.
The European Championships promise to have a significant impact, involving 50 Countries, over 800 athletes and 450 staff members. From a media point of view, along with a significant coverage from the International press, the Eurovision will produce the whole event live on TV, airing the first three days in streaming and the last two on TV, on Eurosport and at least seven national TVs, including Italian Raisport, to extend the visibility in over 60 European Countries, plus the coverage given by Eurosport Asia.
