2018 wird die letzte Saison für Jérémy Roy sein

Jérémy Roy, der seit 16 Jahren für das Team FDJ treu ist, gab heute bekannt, dass 2018 seine letzte Saison im Pro-Rad-Feld sein wird.

Jérémy Roy: «Es ist nie eine einfache Entscheidung, aber ich habe beschlossen, dass 2018 meine letzte Saison sein wird. Ich bin stolz darauf, in die Kategorie der „One-Team-Männer“ zu gehören, da mich das Team FDJ während meiner gesamten Karriere begleitet hat.

Es ist jetzt nicht an der Zeit, über Karriereplanungspläne zu sprechen oder irgendeinen „letzten Tag“ zu planen, weil ich vorher noch großartige Rennen fahren und große Ziele mit meinen Teamkollegen erfüllen muss.

Phil Bauhaus wins Stage 3, Nation Towers Stage,
of the Abu Dhabi Tour. Elia Viviani retains the Red Jersey

Abu Dhabi (Al Marina), 23 February 2018 – The German rider Phil Bauhaus (Team Sunweb) won Stage 3 of the 2018 Abu Dhabi Tour, from Abu Dhabi to Abu Dhabi (Al Marina – 133km), in a bunch sprint. Elia Viviani (Quick-Step Floors), fourth on the finish line, retains the lead in the General Classification. On the podium he was rewarded with the race leader’s Red Jersey, sponsored by Al Maryah Island, and also the points leader’s Green Jersey, sponsored by Emirates Post.

Van der Breggen und Grotts triumphieren

Am zweiten Tag des Afxentia-Etappenrennens haben die Leader-Jerseys ihre Besitzer gewechselt. Anna van der Breggen holte sich mit ihrem Etappensieg nach 52,2 Kilometern in Lefkara das Gelbe Trikot. Bei den Herren gewann Specialized-Markengefährte Howard Grotts die Regen-Etappe, zwölf Sekunden vor Lars Forster, der damit am Samstag im Gelben Trikot zur dritten Etappe antreten wird.

Howard Grotts (Specialied Racing) gehört zu den besten Kletterern unter den Mountainbikern und das stellte der US-Amerikaner auch in Lefkara unter Beweis. Grotts schlug auf dem acht Kilometer langen Anstieg, der etwa bei Kilometer neun beginnt, ein hohes Tempo an und ging bereits mit einem Vorsprung von rund 30 Sekunden in die folgende Abfahrt hinein.
„Ich wollte als Erster in den Downhill, um mein eigenes Tempo fahren zu können“, erklärte Grotts. „Ich habe damit gerechnet, dass sie mich im Downhill wieder einholen.“

An der zweiten Verpflegungszone hatte er noch 45 Sekunden Differenz, doch danach gelang es Lars Forster (BMC Racing) zu Grotts aufzuschließen. Kurze Zeit später, etwa zehn Kilometer vor dem Ziel rutschte Grotts einmal weg und stürzte. Forster entschied sich nicht alleine vorneweg zu fahren und seine Kräfte für den Schluss-Anstieg zu sparen.

So kam es zum Zusammenschluss von zwölf bis 14 Fahrern, die mehr oder weniger gemeinsam in den fünf Kilometer langen Schluss-Anstieg gingen. Sebastian Fini Carstensen (CST Sandd American Eagle) beschleunigte. „Um zu testen, wie die anderen drauf sind“, erklärte der Däne später.

Das hatte zur Folge, dass sie nur noch zu dritt waren, als es drei Kilometer vor Schluss in den steilsten Abschnitt hinein ging. Howard Grotts attackierte dort und schlug ein hohes Tempo an, dem weder Forster noch Carstensen folgen konnten.

Der Schweizer und der Däne blieben bis ein Kilometer vor dem Ziel nebeneinander, dann setzte sich Forster von seinem Begleiter ab und erreichte das Ziel nur acht Sekunden hinter Grotts und sicherte sich damit das Gelbe Leader-Jersey.

Paris-Nice 2018 : A whole different story

Key points :
 The 76th edition of Paris-Nice, which will take place between 4th and 11th March, will be whetting the appetites of ambitious pretenders to the crown such as Dan Martin, Tejay van Garderen or Esteban Chaves, who will be attempting to put an end to the domination of Team Sky, represented by title holder Sergio Henao.
 The Race to the Sun could also smile on combative French riders: Julian Alaphilippe, Tony Gallopin and Warren Barguil are not setting themselves any limits. As for Nacer Bouhanni and Arnaud Démare, they will be concentrating on the stages for the sprinters, but will have to battle with Kittel, Kristoff, Greipel and Groenewegen…
Each start to the season throws up a batch of uncertainties, raises new questions and gives opportunities to hitherto unknown riders or riders reaching maturity. Indeed, very often Paris-Nice is the stage on which the first impressions are either confirmed or swept away. In this respect, the 2018 vintage is open to a renewal of the ranks, even if Team Sky will be lining up with the title holder Sergio Henao, who started the season with a victorious defence of his Colombian Champion’s jersey. This year, neither Alberto Contador nor Richie Porte will be barring his way, but this also means that the many pretenders for victory will be all the more uninhibited. Having failed to climb higher than the 3rd step on the podium in 2017, Dan Martin is perhaps about to start a season that will be his biggest challenge to date, in his new UAE-Emirates jersey, whilst the rocket otherwise known as Esteban Chaves could finally take off this year, as hinted towards with triumph on the Tour Down Under. It will be no surprise to see Tejay van Garderen taste victory on the time-trial in Saint-Etienne and boss an event that he has never completely tamed (5th in 2012 and 4th in 2013), or to see Jakob Fuglsang (3rd on the Tour of Valencia and 4th in Andalusia) dominate the competition at the resort of Colmiane in a similar manner to his winning ride on the Dauphiné at the Plateau de Solaison. Similarly, Ilnur Zakarin could perhaps seize the opportunity to win a stage race that has escaped him since the Tour of Romandie in 2015, if he shows as convincing form as on the day of his victory at the Madone d’Utelle (in 2016).

However, these new circumstances also hang on the capacity of the French riders to battle with the best on a route that seems well-suited to the potential of certain Gallic leaders. For example, the finish on the stage into Meudon looks like an invitation for Julian Alaphilippe to make a break for the first yellow jersey of the week. A stage victory on his first race this year in Colombia gives him at least legitimate hopes of doing so, as well as improving on a final 5th place obtained in Nice last year. This will also be the goal of Tony Gallopin (6th in 2015), who has shown himself to be on especially good form in his new colours of AG2R – La Mondiale, winning the Etoile de Bessèges and coming 2nd on the Tour of Provence. Also with a brand new jersey, Warren Barguil will be counting on the final three stages of Paris-Nice to launch a season worthy of his performance on Le Tour in 2017. Lilian Calmejane may also be looking to convert the polka dot jersey won one year ago into a yellow one.

French hopes in the general classification will be accompanied by the prospects of their two best sprinters, Nacer Bouhanni and Arnaud Démare, who should find opportunities to express themselves in Vierzon (stage 2), Chatel-Guyon (stage 3) and why not in Sisteron (stage 5). Both men will be looking toward the Via Roma in San Remo, which will also be in the sights of other former winners on Paris-Nice such as Sam Bennett, Marcel Kittel, André Greipel or Alexander Kristoff. There will not be enough winners’ bouquets for everybody.

PARIS-NICE CHALLENGE
After having welcomed more than 1,300 cyclists for its second edition in 2017, Paris-Nice Challenge will be back on Saturday 10th March 2018, the day before the finish of the professional’s race. This amateur cycling event, in the countryside around Nice, is the first major event of the season. It will give amateur cyclists the opportunity to tackle the route on the last stage of Paris-Nice, merely 24 hours before the professional pack.

Die Schweizer dominieren:
Indergand und Litscher gewinnen Prolog

Die Schweizer Linda Indergand und Thomas Litscher haben zum Auftakt des 22. Afxentia Etappenrennens im Rahmen des Cyprus Sunshine Cup den 14,5 Kilometer langen Prolog von Lefkara nach Skarinou gewonnen. Indergand hielt die überraschend starke Straßen-Olympiasiegterin Anna van der Breggen und Vorjahres-Siegerin Githa Michiels in Schach. Bei den Herren fuhr Litscher knapp fünf Sekunden schneller als sein Landsmann Lars Forster und lag 19 Sekunden vor London-Olympiasieger Jaroslav Kulhavy aus Tschechien.

Linda Indergand (Focus XC) lieferte bei den Damen eine furiose Vorstellung ab. Die ausgewiesen starke Fahrtechnikerin hatte die eine Minute vor ihr gestartete Gunn-Rita Dahle-Flesjaa (Merida) bereits im ersten Gegenanstieg nach Kilometer drei vor sich.

„Ich dachte noch, ich sei in den Anstieg zu schnell reingefahren, aber als ich Gunn-Rita vor mir sah und den Abstand halten konnte, wusste ich, dass ich gut unterwegs bin“, erklärte Linda Indergand. In der folgenden Downhill-Passage überholte sie Dahle-Flesjaa. „Ich konnte ihr Hinterrad nicht halten“, bekannte die 45-jährige Skandinavierin.

Die Schweizerin und die Norwegerin aucrholten Abstand halten konntin gs bin“ schnell reingefahren, aber als ich Gunn-Rita vor mir sah und den Abstand halten konntüberholten auch noch Annika Langvad (Specialized Racing). Die Marathon-Weltmeisterin aus Dänemark hatte Pech, als sie sich nach der ersten Technischen Zone einen langen Cut im Reifen holte und viel Zeit verlor, ehe sie wechseln konnte.

Indergand passierte auch noch Anne Tauber (CST Sandd American Eagle), die Niederländerin kam am zweiten, kürzeren Anstieg zurück und Indergand konnte sich an deren Hinterrad heften. Bergab zog sie dann wieder vorbei.
„Bergab geht es schon gut“, lachte Indergand. „Es ist immer cool mit einem Sieg in die Saison zu starten.“

Van der Breggen macht wenig Fehler
Elf Sekunden trennten die zweifache Eliminator-Weltmeisterin von der großen Überraschung auf dem zweiten Rang. Anna van der Breggen war früh ins Rennen gegangen und deshalb war sie in ihrem Statement verhalten. Einen zweiten Platz hätte sie überhaupt nicht erwartet.

Sep Vanmarcke führt EF Education First-Drapap für Cannondale, während er die beiden belgischen Rennen Omloop Het Nieuwsblad und Kuurne-Brüssel-Kuurne fährt, die das Saisoneröffnungswochenende der Classics ausmachen.

Omloop Het Nieuwsblad begeistert Fans, Regisseure und Fahrer durch sein neues / altes Finale, das auf ältere Flandern-Flights zurückgeht und die Muur-Kapelmuur- und Bosberg-Anstiege als Abschlusshügel kennzeichnet, die unweigerlich das Rennen beeinflussen werden. Der Muur-Kapelmuur mit seinen kopfsteingepflasterten Spitzkehren und seiner Geschichte ist eine der kultigsten Anstiege des Sports.

„Omloop ist das erste wichtige Rennen der Saison und das erste Mal auf Kopfsteinpflaster. Die Atmosphäre ist großartig und jeder möchte gut sein. Es ist hart, Vollgasrennen „, sagte Vanmarcke. „In Valencia und Ruta fuhr das Team perfekt zusammen. Für mich fühlt es sich ganz anders an als letztes Jahr. Wir waren mit einem Teil des Classic-Teams in Spanien, also sind wir schon aneinander gewöhnt. Andere, wie Mitch Docker und Tom Scully, mit denen ich in diesem Jahr noch nicht gefahren bin, passen aber in das System, weil sie echte Teamplayer sind. “

8.4.2018 PARIS–ROUBAIX: A TREAT FOR COBBLE-GOBBLERS

 The course of the 2018 edition will stretch for 257 km and feature no fewer than 29 cobblestone sectors totalling 54.5 km.
 The pre-race parade in Compiègne will take the peloton through the Glade of the Armistice, where the armistice that ended World War I was signed on 11 November 1918.
 A brand-new sector will be added to the course in Cambrésis, near the start of the gruelling part of the race. However, the decisive moments will come later, with the Trouée d’Arenberg, the Mons-en-Pévèle sector and, finally, the Carrefour de l’Arbre, with the Roubaix Velodrome tantalisingly close!

The highlights of the season already loom on the horizon. After spending the winter training hard to prepare for their objectives, the majority of riders who make up the international peloton have already kicked off the season under the sunny skies of Australia, South America, the Middle East or Spain. Some are racking up race miles with their sights firmly set on the cobbled classics, where the main course will be served to the cobble-gobblers between Compiègne and Roubaix on 8 April. The riders will hit the first cobbled sectors after reaching Troisvilles, barely 100 kilometres into the race. The amount of cobblestones is a shade lower than last year, but still more than enough to deal serious damage. These cobbled sectors will total 54.5 km (versus 55 km in 2017), compared with an average of 52.58 km for the last ten editions.
For many years, the organisers of Paris–Roubaix have done their bit to discover and preserve these extraordinary roads, which guarantee a spectacular show on the day of the race and, even more importantly, give the landscapes of the region a special flavour. The course changes for the 2018 edition affect the 30 kilometres after Troisvilles. The Saint-Python sector is back after a year on ice, but the riders will tackle it in the opposite direction this time round. Another new sector, this one stretching for 1,500 m between Saint-Hilaire and Saint-Vaast, will push the riders harder shortly afterwards. These new changes are not expected to play a decisive role in the outcome of Paris–Roubaix, as the big stars usually keep their powder dry until the final 100 kilometres.

After Paris-Nice Challenge, it is on the “Hell of the North” that the competitors will offer themselves a new challenge. Amateur cyclists can also face this legendary race on the eve of the professional peloton’s entry into action. More than 6,000 competitors of 66 nationalities will compete in one of the three proposed distances (70 km, 145 km and 172 km).

This weekend, the UCI World Tour FDJ cycling team will be at the start of the Belgian Classics opening weekend with, on Saturday 24 the Omloop Het Nieuwsblad and on Sunday 25 Kuurne-Brussel-Kuurne. Two slightly different line-ups to support the French Champion Arnaud Démare:

Frédéric Guesdon, FDJ sports director for the Belgian weekend: „For those two races, Arnaud Démare will be our natural leader. We built a team around him to support him and make sure he is not isolated in the finish, like it happened sometimes before. That being said, we noticed those last years that the riders tend to reveal themselves earlier and earlier on the Classics. It means we will have to be present at the front and this could be the role of riders like Ignatas Konovalovas or Olivier Le Gac. While being a nice option if anything happens to Arnaud, Marc Sarreau will be back in the train for Kuurne-Brussel-Kuurne, the more suitable to a sprint finish. Omloop Het Nieuwsblad is usually more open, it might enable another guy to have his own chance“.

Abu Dhabi Tour #1: Cavendish crashes out on stage 1

Concussion rules Mark Cavendish out of Abu Dhabi Tour
Alexander Kristoff (UAE – Team Emirates) won the opening stage of the Abu Dhabi Tour, sprinting to the stage win ahead of Andrea Gaurdini (Bardiani -CSF) and Caleb Ewan (Mitchelton-Scott).

Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka was dealt a massive blow even before racing truly got underway on stage 1 of the Abu Dhabi Tour. Mark Cavendish was involved in a crash in the neutral zone. It seemed the race director’s car slowed suddenly as it led the peloton out of Madinat Zayed, the reaction in the peloton saw 4 riders, including our Manxman, go down.

Unfortunately Cavendish had to abandon the Abu Dhabi Tour as a result of the crash. „Mark sustained a concussion and a whiplash injury after his crash today. Due to the concussion, we were not willing to risk rider safety and the call was made for Mark to stop the race. A serious neck injury has been excluded in hospital. He currently has some concussive symptoms and neck pain, but is otherwise stable. We will monitor Mark’s condition closely going forward.“ explains Team Doctor, Dr Adrian Rotunno.

Madinat Zayed, 21 February 2018 – The European road champion Alexander Kristoff (UAE Team Emirates) won the opening stage of the 2018 Abu Dhabi Tour, starting and finishing in Madinat Zayed (189km), in a bunch sprint and took the lead in the General Classification. On the podium he was rewarded with the first race leader’s Red Jersey, sponsored by Al Maryah Island, and also the points leader’s Green Jersey, sponsored by Emirates Post.
