Jai Hindley starker Dritter auf der Königsetappe des Critérium du Dauphiné

Der siebte Tagesabschnitt des Critérium du Dauphiné war die Königsetappe der Rundfahrt. Nach dem Start in Porte-de-Savoie führte die Etappe über den Col de la Madeleine und den Col du Mollard zur Bergankunft am Col de la Croix de Fer. Mit über 4000 Höhenmetern auf nur 147 Kilometer, ein schwerer Tag im Hochgebirge. Jai Hindley und Emanuel Buchmann kamen im Feld der Gesamtwertungs-Favoriten zum Schlussanstieg. J. Vingegaard war im Finale eine Klasse für sich und gewann die Etappe als Solist. Dahinter unterstrich Hindley mit Platz drei seine starke Form und konnte im Gesamtklassement wichtige Zeit gut machen. Mit zwölf Sekunden Rückstand auf Platz drei ist Jai Hindley aktuell Vierter der Gesamtwertung. Das Critérium du Dauphiné geht morgen mit einer weiteren, schweren Bergetappe in Grenoble zu Ende.

„Wie erwartet, ein extrem harter Tag! Ich habe mich gut gefühlt heute, die langen Anstiege hier liegen mir. Am Schlussanstieg war Vingegaard wieder in einer eigenen Liga unterwegs. Vingegaard, altitude lover

Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) displayed his climbing skills to conquer the highest stage finish in the history of the Critérium du Dauphiné, on Saturday. The Dane dropped all his rivals more than 5 kilometres away from the Col de la Croix de Fer (2,607m above the sea). A month before the defence of his 2022 victory in the Tour de France – where he won a stage at Col du Granon (2,404m) -, Vingegaard put 41“ between his first chaser Adam Yates (UAE Team Emirates) and himself to increase his lead in the overall standings and comfort his yellow and blue jersey. Jai Hindley (Bora-Hansgrohe) completes the podium of the day just ahead of Ben O’Connor (AG2R Citroën). The final battles of the Critérium du Dauphiné 2023 will lead the riders to Grenoble, where the overall winner will be crowned on the slopes of La Bastille.

A 129-man peloton set off from Porte-de-Savoie to take on the Alpine challenges of the final week-end of the Critérium du Dauphiné 2023. The stage starts on the flat but the attackers are eager to hit the climbs of the day: they reach the bottom of the ascent to Col de la Madeleine (the first HC climb of the race, with 25.1km of ascent at 6.2%), at km 50, in just under an hour!
Four riders lead the way after they attacked at km 21: Rémi Cavagna (Soudal Quick-Step), Madis Mihkels (Intermarché-Circus-Wantty), Anthony Perez (Cofidis) and Victor Campenaerts (Lotto Dstny). At the bottom of the climb, Reuben Thompson (Groupama-FDJ), Anthon Charmig (Uno X), Matteo Vercher (Total Energies) and Tobias Bayer (Alpecin Deceuninck) trail by 1 minute. And the gap to the bunch reaches its maximum: 5’45’’.

Campenaerts goes solo
More fireworks are lit on the ascent. Pierre Latour (Total Energies) sets off with his teammate Mathieu Burgaudeau at the bottom of the climb and later joins Matteo Vercher to try and join the leaders. Meanwhile, Victor Campenaerts drops all his breakaway companions and goes solo over the top of La Madeleine. Anthony Perez trails by 1’, Latour, Charmig and Bayer by 1’25’’… The peloton, led at a strong pace by Ineos Grenadiers, summit with a gap of 2’30’’.
As the race travels through the Maurienne valley, Perez, Charmig and Bayer get together behind Campenaerts while the other chasers are caught. Jonas Vingegaard’s Jumbo-Visma pull the bunch.

At the bottom of the climb to Col du Mollard, Campenaerts is 1’55’’ ahead of his chasers while the peloton trail by 3’30’’. After 18.5km with an average gradient of 5.8%, Campenaerts is still at the front… But his lead is down to 15’’. The Belgian baroudeur takes the time to celebrate at the summit – he’s all but certain to take the polka-dot jersey at the end of the stage. He is caught right at the bottom of the final ascent of the day.
Jumbo-Visma up the ante and Vingegaard attacks with 5.5 kilometres to go. Right behind him, Adam Yates (UAE Team Emirates) sets his own pace behind the Dane, who steadily increases his lead all the way to the summit.

A tight battle for the podium
Vingegaard wins 41’’ ahead of the Brit. Jai Hindley (Bora-Hansgrohe) comes 3rd (+54’’), after he accelerated in the last 2 kilometres. He gains a few seconds on his compatriot Ben O’Connor (AG2R Citroën) and Max Poole
In the overall standings, Yates (2nd, +2’11’’), O’Connor (3rd, +2’24’’) and Hindley (4th, +2’36’’) look set to battle for the podium positions on the way to La Bastille, on Sunday. But it will take an extraordinary coup to overthrow Vingegaard.

Ausreißer setzen sich durch, Jai Hindley jetzt Fünfter der Gesamtwertung

Am sechsten Tag des Critérium du Dauphiné stand die erste von insgesamt drei Etappen in den Alpen an. Nach dem Start in Nantua galt es für die Profis 170km, vier Bergwertungen der zweiten und dritten Kategorie, sowie eine Bergankunft in Crest-Voland zu bewältigen. Drei Fahrer, einer ursprünglich 14-köpfigen Ausreißergruppe, konnten sich durchsetzen und am letzten Anstieg den Sieg unter sich ausmachen. Beim Etappenerfolg von G. Zimmermann überquerte Jai Hindley als Achter die Ziellinie. In der Gesamtwertung verbesserte sich Hindley um eine weitere Position und liegt jetzt auf Rang fünf, 1:37 Minuten hinter J. Vingegaard.

Zimmermann punches like a heavy weight

Georg Zimmermann (Intermarché-Circus-Wanty) took his 2nd professional victory, the first in the World Tour, in Crest-Voland, the arrival of stage 6 of the Critérium du Dauphiné. The young German was strong and smart enough to be part of a 14-man breakaway that only developed after more than 60 kilometres of battle. He then mastered a finale he already knew from the Tour de l’Avenir (he was 18th there in 2018) to get the best of Mathieu Burgaudeau (Total Energies) and Jonathan Castroviejo (Ineos Grenadiers). Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) attacked again but his GC rivals answered this move. The final week-end will offer them much more elevation to open differences in the mountains.

The road rises, the stakes are raised, and the attackers are very much inspired from the start in Nantua (where Julian Alaphilippe won a stage of the Tour de l’Ain in 2014). The riders cover 49.5km in the first hour… And it’s not enough to make the break! The battle keeps going after the cat-2 ascent of the Côte de Clermont-en-Genevois (summit at km 52.8) but Jumbo-Visma control the different attempts until they see a group they deem not too dangerous for Jonas Vingegaard’s yellow and blue jersey.
Six riders eventually get away at km 56. They’re joined by eight more attackers at km 60 to make the break of the day: Nans Peters (AG2R Citroën), Jonathan Castroviejo (Ineos Grenadiers), Andrea Bagioli, Dries Devenyns (Soudal Quick-Step), Andrey Amador (EF Education-EasyPost), Georg Zimmermann (Intermarché-Circus-Wanty), Matteo Jorgenson (Movistar), Matteo Trentin (UAE Team Emirates), Axel Zinglé (Cofidis), Lawson Craddock (Jayco AlUla), Mathieu Burgaudeau, Matteo Vercher, Alexis Vuillermoz (Total Energies), Simon Guglielmi (Arkéa Samsic).

The race explodes up the Col des Aravis
Meanwhile, the pace condemns a handful of weakened riders: Donavan Grondin (Arkéa Samsic), Natnael Tesfatsion (Trek Segafredo), Rudy Porter (Jayco AlUla) and Manuele Boaro (Astana Qazaqstan) withdraw from the race.
Jumbo-Visma control the gap, until it reaches a maximum of 3’15’’ at km 82. Then Uno X drive the chase, with the occasional support of Team DSM and Trek Segafredo. The gap is down to 1’50’’ as the race enters the final 30 kilometres.
The breakaway explodes on the slopes of the cat-2 ascent of Col des Aravis (7.8km at 5.7%, summit 18.3km away from the finish). At the summit, Jonathan Castroviejo, Mathieu Burgaudeau and Georg Zimmermann are 35’’ ahead of Matteo Trentin, Nans Peters, Simon Guglielmi and Andrea Bagioli. The peloton trail by 1’25’’.

Zimmermann punches to victory
The road rises again for the last 7km, with the climb of the Côte de Notre-Dame-de-Bellecombe (3.2km at 6.1%), immediately followed by the final ascent to Crest-Voland (2.3km at 6.6%). The chasers trail by 25’’ and the peloton by 1’40’’.
These differences are big enough for the three leaders to battle it out. Zimmermann attacks with 2km to go. It seems like his rivals can’t react… But Burgaudeau bridges the gap 500 metres away from the line. The Frenchman opens the sprint but the German clinches victory. Behind them, Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) tests his GC rivals into the last kilometre but he doesn’t manage to open differences.

Jai Hindley im schweren Finale der fünften Etappe auf Platz 6, Nils Politt mit starkem Auftritt in der Fluchtgruppe

Der fünfte Tagesabschnitt des Critérium du Dauphiné führte über 191km von Cormoranche-sur-Saôone nach Salins-les-Bains. Auf einen flachen, ersten Teil der Etappe folgte ein anspruchsvoller Abschnitt mit drei Bergwertungen der zweiten und dritten Kategorie. Nils Politt war Teil einer starken, sechsköpfigen Ausreißergruppe, die nach einer 170km langen Flucht 17km vor dem Ziel vom Feld gestellt wurde. Im Finale konnte sich J. Vingegaard am letzten Anstieg absetzen und die Etappe als Solist gewinnen. Jai Hindley überquerte als Sechster, 31s hinter Vingegaard, mit der ersten Verfolgergruppe die Ziellinie. Im Gesamtklassement liegt Hindley vor den letzten drei Etappen jetzt auf Rang sechs.

„Das Finale und die Anfahrt zum Ziel waren richtig schwer, deshalb hatte ich für heute schon etwas Bewegung in der Gesamtwertung erwartet. Es war super, Nils Politt in der Ausreißerguppe des Tages zu haben. Ich möchte mich auch bei meinen Teamkollegen für die super Unterstützung bedanken! Vingegaard war am letzten Anstieg in einer anderen Liga, dahinter haben wir um die Plätze gekämpft. Ich bin zufrieden heute – bis zur Tour sind es ja noch ein paar Wochen.“ Jai Hindley

„Es war unser Plan, Nils Politt heute in der Ausreißergruppe zu haben. Natürlich hätten wir auch gehofft, dass die Gruppe es bis zur Ziellinie schafft. Nils hat ein super Rennen gezeigt heute – Chapeau! Ein Tag der fast maßgeschneidert schien für eine Ausreißergruppe wurde am Ende zu einer Etappe fürs Gesamtklassement; so ist moderner Radsport. Vingegaard masters Thésy

Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) showed his class on day 5 of the Critérium du Dauphiné 2023 as he soloed away from the GC group to take the stage win and the yellow and blue jersey as the overall leader of the race. After an attack by Richard Carapaz (EF Education-EasyPost) on the slopes of the Côte de Thésy, the Danish winner of the Tour de France 2022 dropped everyone with 16 kilometres to go. Julian Alaphilippe (Soudal Quick-Step) finished 2nd in Salins-les-Bains, 31’’ behind Vingegaard. The Frenchman is also 2nd of the GC, 1’23’’ behind the winner of the day. Mikkel Bjerg (UAE Team Emirates) crashed at the bottom of the Côte de Thésy.

After the individual time trial and ahead of a mountainous week-end, attackers are inspired from the start in Cormoranche-sur-Saône. Nils Politt (Bora-Hansgrohe) is very active and his efforts launch the break of the day at km 5, with Georg Zimmermann (Intermarché-Circus-Wanty), Jonas Gregaard (Uno-X), Edvald Boasson Hagen (Total Energies) and Leon Heinschke (Team DSM) alongside him. Thomas De Gendt (Lotto Dstny) quickly bridges the gap to make it six men at the front while the other counter-attackers are reeled in by the bunch.
The leaders fly towards the main challenges of the day. They cover 50.8 kilometres in the first hour, and 46.2 kilometres in the second hour, despite hitting the first ascent of the day (the cat-3 Côte de Château-Chalon, summited at km 97.7).

Relentless pace
Their efforts give them a maximum lead of 4’15’’ at km 78. Soudal Quick-Step and Bahrain Victorious participate in the chase alongside Mikkel Berg’s UAE Team Emirates). The pace is too high for Maxim Van Gils, who has to abandon due to illness according to his team Lotto Dstny.
The peloton seriously up the ante, but so do the attackers. They cross the finish line for the first time and take on a 48.7 km loop around Salins-les-Bains, with the climbs of Côte d’Ivory (cat-3, 36.7km to go after the summit) and Côte de Thésy (cat-2, 14.4km to go). The gap is still up to 3’05’’.

Carapaz and Alaphilippe try…
The many ups and downs wear the peloton, but EF Education-EasyPost take the reins to bring the gap down to 1’ for the last 30 kilometres. The gap is down to 20’’ at the bottom of the Côte de Thésy (3.6km at 8.8%). Mikkel Bjerg (UAE Team Emirates) hits the deck. He quickly gets back up on his bike but can’t make his way back to the front.
Richard Carapaz (EF Education-EasyPost) attacks 3 kilometres away from the summit. Julian Alaphilippe (Soudal Quick-Step) tries to follow but only Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) can match the Ecuadorian’s pace… And the Danish rider even drops his rival 1.5km away from the summit, with 16km to go.

Vingegaard takes it all
Atop the Côte de Thésy, Vingegaard is 35’’ ahead of the GC group, not featuring Carapaz, David Gaudu (Groupama-FDJ) or Dani Martinez (Ineos Grenadiers), who were all dropped on the ascent.
Vingegaard keeps up with his effort all the way to the finish. Julian Alaphilippe is the fastest from the GC group to take the 2nd place of the day and of the overall standings, ahead of the final three mountainous challenges

Sergio Higuita beendet Baskenland-Rundfahrt auf dem sechsten Platz im Gesamtklassement

3.400 Höhenmeter auf einer Strecke von nur 137,8 Kilometern mit sieben klassifizierten Anstiegen, darunter drei der 1. Kategorie, standen am letzten Tag der Baskenland-Rundfahrt auf dem Programm. Im ersten Anstieg setzte sich eine Ausreißergruppe um Emanuel Buchmann ab, aber bei Rennhälfte fiel Emu in die reduzierte GC-Gruppe um Sergio Higuita zurück. Im vorletzten Anstieg attackierte Vingegaard aus dieser Gruppe heraus, konnte dann alle Spitzenreiter überholen und das Rennen alleine anführen. Sergio, zusammen mit zehn anderen Fahrern, versuchte die Lücke zu ihm zu schließen, aber am Fuß des letzten Anstiegs, 20 km vor dem Ziel, hatte der Däne schon einen Vorsprung von fast einer Minute, und war letztendlich nicht mehr einzuholen. Der kolumbianische BORA-hansgrohe Fahrer belegte den fünften Platz in Eibar und beendet die Baskenland-Rundfahrt auf dem 6. Platz in der Gesamtwertung. Mit Etappensiegen durch Ide Schelling sowie Sergio und seine Top-10 Platzierung in der Gesamtwertung beendet BORA -hansgrohe die diesjährige Rundfahrt erfolgreich.

„Wir können mit unserer Leistung beim diesjährigen Rennen wirklich zufrieden sein. Wir sind offensiv gefahren, und ich habe mich heute sehr bemüht, einen Podiumsplatz in der Gesamtwertung zu erreichen. Am Ende war ich nur acht Sekunden vom Podium entfernt, es war also sehr knapp. Es war auch toll, dass wir zwei Etappensiege holen konnten, und ich möchte mich bei meinen Teamkollegen für ihre großartige Unterstützung während der ganzen Woche bedanken. „Wir wussten, dass es heute eine Sekundenjagd geben wird, und dass wir noch eine Chance aufs Podium hatten. Sergio war nämlich nur sechs Sekunden vom Podium entfernt. Wir haben wieder versucht, die Etappe zu gewinnen und das Team hat gut auf dieses Ziel hingearbeitet. Sergio ist ein besonders starkes Rennen gefahren und am letzten Anstieg sah es so aus, als ob er aufs Podium im Gesamtklassement fahren kann, aber am Ende konnte er nicht genug Fahrer abhängen, die vor ihm in der Gesamtwertung lagen. Sergio Higuita holt den zweiten Etappensieg für BORA-hansgrohe bei der Baskenland-Rundfahrt

Die mit 164,5 km kurzfristig leicht verkürzte Etappe rund um Amorebieta-Etxano in der Nähe von Bilbao war sehr kräftezehrend, denn unterwegs musste eine Reihe von kurzen aber steilen Anstiegen bewältigt werden, bevor das Teilstück mit einer anspruchsvollen Zielrunde endete. Nachdem ein Ausreißer-Duo vor dem letzten Zwischensprint gestellt wurde, kam das Rennen wieder zusammen, aber im unkategorisierten Anstieg gleich danach löste sich eine 20-Mann-Gruppe um Sergio Higuita vom Feld. Mit 5 km bis zum Ziel hatten die Spitzenfahrer einen Vorsprung von 15 Sekunden. 200 m vor der Ziellinie lancierte Sergio seinen Sprint und der Kolumbianer war heute einfach zu schnell, um wieder eingeholt zu werden. Er holte damit den zweiten Etappensieg für BORA-hansgrohe bei der diesjährigen Rundfahrt und rückt auch auf den 8. Platz in der Gesamtwertung vor.

„Es war heute eine wirklich harte Etappe, aber ich wusste, dass ich ein Spitzenergebnis erzielen kann. Im Finale sah ich meine Chance im Sprint. Ich bin zwar etwas zu früh losgefahren, aber am Ende war ich stark genug, um meinen Vorsprung zu halten und nicht mehr eingeholt zu werden. Ich bin wirklich froh, dem Team einen zweiten Etappensieg zu schenken. Es ist auch immer schön, bei diesem Rennen zu gewinnen, da ich hier viele gute Erinnerungen habe. Nach ein paar nicht so leichten Monaten hat mir dieser Etappensieg, und auch mein Podium beim GP Indurain, viel mehr Selbstvertrauen gegeben, und das ist wirklich motivierend für mich und das ganze Team.“ – Sergio Higuita

„Wir haben heute eigentlich geplant, einen Fahrer in die Spitzengruppe zu schicken, um im harten Finale eine Relay-Station zu haben, und mit der Zielsetzung numerisch einfach stärker für das klassikerähnliche Finale aufgestellt zu sein. Es hat nicht geklappt, weil sich heute nur zwei Fahrer absetzen konnten, und deshalb haben wir dann alles auf die Unterstützung von Sergio und Emu ausgelegt. Das hat recht gut funktioniert und das ganze Team hat da eine sehr gute Performance abgeliefert. Ich muss sagen, dass Florian Lipowitz heute einen riesen Anteil am Erfolg hat. Der ist wirklich mit ganz großen Fahrern auf Augenhöhe gewesen. Am Ende konnte Sergio diese starke Teamarbeit wirklich hervorragend vollenden. Wir sind sehr glücklich mit diesem Sieg, besonders nach dem unglücklichen Ereignis auf der dritten Etappe. Dieser Sieg stimmt uns für die Schlussetappe natürlich sehr zuversichtlich. Die Form ist da und morgen greifen wir noch einmal voll an und versuchen auch in der Gesamtwertung ein gutes Ergebnis herauszufahren.“ – Christian Pömer, Sportlicher Leiter

Emanuel Buchmann und Sergio Higuita knapp außerhalb der Top 10 auf der 4. Etappe der Baskenland-Rundfahrt

Die 4. Etappe war ein ständiges Auf und Ab durch die Hügellandschaft westlich von Bilbao und endete nach 175,7 km mit einer 15 km langen Abfahrt nach Santurtzi am Hafen Bilbaos. Im letzten Anstieg fiel das Peloton auseinander, aber Sergio Higuita und Emanuel Buchmann waren im reduzierten Peloton. Mit 20 km bis zum Ziel attackierten Vingegaard und Landa aus dieser Gruppe heraus und in der letzten Abfahrt hatten sie einen Vorsprung von 25 Sekunden. Das Duo machte letztlich den Tagessieg unter sich aus, während Sergio und Emanuel die Ziellinie auf dem 11. bzw. 12. Platz. in der Verfolgergruppe überquerten.

„Die Enttäuschung von der gestrigen verpassten Chance mit Sergio sitzt noch ziemlich tief, aber heute war nicht eine Etappe für ihn, besonders mit der langen Abfahrt. Trotzdem haben wir es probiert. Er hat versucht, mit Gaudu die Lücke zum führenden Duo zu schließen, aber das ist ihm letztendlich nicht gelungen. Am Ende hatten wir zwei Fahrer, Sergio und Emanuel, knapp außerhalb der Top 10. Aber wie schon gesagt, war es keine Etappe für uns heute mit der 15 km langen Abfahrt. Pech im Finale verwehrt Sergio Higuita ein Spitzenergebnis auf der 3. Etappe der Baskenland-Rundfahrt

Das dritte Teilstück der Baskenland-Rundfahrt führte von Errenteria aus zunächst entlang der Küste in der Nähe von San Sebastian, bevor es nach 55 km über viele kurze aber harte Steigungen ging. Der letzte Kilometer führte dann über einen, bis zu 26 Prozent steilen Anstieg, hinauf zum Weingut Hika Bodega in Amasa-Villabona, wo das Rennen nach 162 km endete. Ein verkleinertes Feld um Sergio Higuita und Emanuel Buchmann erreichte den letzten Anstieg des Tages, wo Sergio 300m vor dem Ziel eine Attacke lancierte. Der Kolumbianer wollte Lopez auf der rechten Seite der Straße überholen, kollidierte aber mit den Absperrungen und verlor seine Position in der Gruppe. Er überquerte die Ziellinie letztendlich auf dem 16. Platz, 20 Sekunden hinter dem Tagessieger Vingegaard. Emanuel Buchmann beendete die Etappe mit 26 Sekunden Rückstand auf dem 23. Platz.

Reaktionen im Ziel

„Es war ein harter und technischer Parcours und wir wussten, dass wir eine gute Chance hatten, die Etappe zu gewinnen. Das Finale war explosiv und besonders schwierig, aber Emu hat mich da sehr gut positioniert. Mit 300m bis zum Ziel versuchte ich auf der rechten Seite der Straße zu attackieren und Lopez zu überholen. Aber er scherte im selben Moment, als ich versuchte ihn zu umfahren, nach rechts aus und dann verlor ich meine Stabilität und prallte gegen die Leitplanken. Das war wirklich Pech, denn es gab heute eine wirklich gute Chance für uns, den Sieg einzufahren. Aber wir konzentrieren uns weiter auf die nächsten Etappen und werden die Motivation auf keinen Fall verlieren.“ – Sergio Higuita

„Wir wollten heute das Gelbe Trikot würdigen und haben deshalb versucht, das Rennen zu kontrollieren. Wir sind vorne gefahren, hatten Unterstützung von EF und vor allem von Jumbo Visma. Im Finale war die Aufgabe von Emu, die frühen Attacken zu kontern. Das ist uns aber leider nicht so gut gelungen, weil er heute einfach nicht die Beine dazu hatte. Dann wollten wir Sergio im Bergaufsprint unsere volle Unterstützung geben, und Emu hat sich da ganz in seinen Dienst gestellt. Als Sergio bei 300 Meter seinen Sprint lancierte, wollte er Lopez überholen, aber leider hat er ihm die Lücke zugemacht und Sergio ist dadurch zu Sturz gekommen. Am Ende sind wir da leider durch diesen Vorfall um ein Spitzenergebnis gebracht worden.“ – Christian Pömer, Sportlicher Leiter

TOUR DE FRANCE PRUDENTIAL SINGAPORE CRITERIUM

 Three months after his famous victory on the Champs-Elysées, Jonas Vingegaard was once again the strongest rider to win the first edition of the 57-kilometre Tour de France Prudential Singapore Criterium. Greeted by a chequered flag, the Danish champion beat Chris Froome and Vincenzo Nibali in a royal breakaway that pulled away in the final two laps.
 Although Mark Cavendish couldn’t find his way into the leading group to use his speed on the Formula One race track, he did win the green jersey as he did in his last Tour participation in 2021, thanks to the intermediate sprints. Among the attackers of the day, Singapore champion Boon Kiak’s efforts saw him win the combativeness award, whilst Cofidis riders Simon Geschke, Axel Zingle, Max Walscheid and Tom Bohli won the team time trial

Key points:
 On the day before the first edition of the Tour de France Prudential Singapore Criterium, the riders have been able to enjoy a day of relaxation and sight-seeing, allowing them, for example, to take time out for a short trip through Chinatown.
 The weekend in Singapore signals the end of an era in modern cycling as two exceptional champions, Vincenzo Nibali and Alejandro Valverde, bring the curtain down on their careers at the two criteriums in Asia.
 The preparations for the race were concluded by the presentation of the teams held at the finishing line of the Criterium, at the foot of the grandstand named The Float which each year also overlooks the finish of the Singapore Formula 1 grand prix. The programme for the evening included a concert by the Synthony philharmonic orchestra, who have created a fusion between classical and electronic music.
 Tomorrow afternoon, sport will have pride of place, with first of all a time-trial then the Criterium, which will start at 4 pm, for a race over a distance of 64 kilometres.

THE FIRST PEDAL STROKES… IN CHINATOWN

Whilst awaiting to climb onto their bikes to tackle the circuit winding around Marina Bay tomorrow at the end of the afternoon, the riders were able to take time to visit Singapore and temporarily get away from the city centre. While photos of the city have widely made its sky-line famous as well as the three towers of Marina Bay Sands linked by its “sky-way” perched at a height of two hundred metres, the riders were able to discover a different face of the city by visiting the district of Albert Park, very close to Chinatown. In this neighbourhood, the buildings are much shorter and the champions were able to enjoy a quick taste of street food. For the inhabitants of Singapore, it is customary to take a snack with a “youtiao” which, according to Alejandro Valverde, resembles the “churros” found in his native Spain, but which Chris Froome gobbled down, with another reference in mind: “They are exactly like the doughnuts that we call “Mandasi” in Kenya. It takes me back to my childhood, because it’s exactly the type of thing that I would eat after a long training ride to recharge my batteries,” explained the four times winner of the Tour, before taking advantage of a small excursion in a “trishaw” among former wearers of the Yellow Jersey. This time, the usual chauffeurs of these traditional means of transport were sat in the passenger seat and left the handlebars to the experts. On completion of this small jaunt through Chinatown, Mark Cavendish showed himself worthy of his champion of Great Britain jersey by returning to the garage first, ahead of Vingegaard, Valverde, Nibali and Froome. The Manx sprinter is well and truly in form!

NIBALI AND VALVERDE COME TO THE END OF THEIR FAREWELL TOUR
One of them is closing in on his 38th birthday whilst the other reached the age of 42 last spring. Vincenzo Nibali and Alejandro Valverde have battled for a long time on the world’s roads, both building up rolls of honour that give them pride of place in the history of cycling, with the Italian among the seven riders to have won the three grand tours and the Spaniard ready to leave the professional pack with a total of 133 victories, placing him in 6th place of the overall hierarchy, just behind Bernard Hinault (145). Both men enjoyed emotional farewells on the Vuelta and Il Lombardia, but will be fastening their last race numbers to their jerseys on the Asian criteriums, in Singapore and Saitama. “I’ve been very busy since Il Lombardia,” explained the Astana rider who has already got involved in the running of the Pro-Continental team created by Douglas Ryder for the 2023 season. “I’ve not really realised that it’s the end, because I’m going to stay involved in cycling. However, I’m delighted to come and ride on these Criteriums, which are excellent showcases for our sport”. As for the Spaniard, “Bala” is also looking to the future, having just taken part in the close season training block with Movistar in Pamplona, “with the desire to pass on as much of my experience as I can to the youngest riders”. The former world champion who is in the process of retiring is nonetheless delighted to be climbing back on his bike tomorrow morning: “I’m here to enjoy these last races as much as I can. I’ve been competitive from the beginning to the end of my career – I still finished 6th on Il Lombardia. However, I’ve come here with my family to share these farewells with them as well as with my team-mates. Perhaps now I’ll allow myself to eat a bit more!”

A CHANCE FOR A SINGAPOREAN?
The aim of the Criterium is also to combine the movers and shakers on the Tour de France with the cyclists who make the headlines in the discipline in their own region, within the same pack. As such, the 16 riders from the world’s elite will have the opportunity to measure themselves against the 28 riders selected by the four teams invited to Singapore. While the national federation has chosen four riders to fly the flag for their country, the hopes of shining on a circuit favourable to sprinters will perhaps be held by Malaysian Mohd Harrif Saleh, whose speed has already caused havoc on the Tour of Langkawi (with three stages won between 2019 and 2020), as well as this season on the Tours of Thailand and Taiwan. The crowds expected along the route will especially cast a knowing eye on his Singaporean team-mate at the Terengganu Polygon Cycling Team. At the age of 32 years, Goh Choon Huat will be participating in the last race of his career, marked by seven national titles in total, and he intends to go out with a bang: “I don’t know what I’ll be able to do on this circuit, but I’m determined to seize the opportunity to take the limelight for my farewell, by taking part in a breakaway, for example”. Finally, the Thailand Continental team will most likely try their luck with their two leaders, namely two times national time-trial champion Peerapol Chawchiangkwang and Sarawut Sirironchai, a four times stage winner on the Tour of Thailand.
