Warum wir die Tour of Flanders lieben (und Du solltest es auch)

To say we’re amped up for Sunday’s showdown would be an understatement. Tour of Flanders, the second of cycling five’s Monuments, is widely considered the pinnacle of one-day racing. The course, the crowds, the atmosphere, the awareness that anything can (and will) happen – it’s distinctly De Ronde. And when a team lines up with a contender for the podium, dreaming of the top step, that belief in possibilities heightens the special feelings.

We’ll treat it like any other day on the race calendar although it’s anything but. Below the seven EF Education First – Drapac p/b Cannondale riders who will pin on a number in Antwerp on Sunday explain why.

MATTI BRESCHEL

“You feel the tension in a good way. Something big is coming up, but if anyone can finish it off, it’s Sep. That gives everyone a lot of confidence.”

MITCH DOCKER

“It’s the build-up to Flanders that makes Flanders what it is. We have a few weeks building up to Sunday, and then Sunday is every other race all rolled into one. It’s the cream of the crop. Everything around that replicates that dynamic – the crowds, the hype, even down to the way people get nervous about it, the sense of achievement of getting through it, the feeling about getting a result. It’s an epic battle, and one of I live for every year.”

SEBASTIAN LANGEVELD

“I grew up as a child in Holland watching this race, never knowing I would four times be top 10. Along with Roubaix, Flanders is my world championships. It’s the biggest one-day race of the year. As a rider, only Roubaix has the same vibe as this. For me Sunday is a big, big day.”

SACHA MODOLO

“When you are in Belgium for Flanders, it’s as if you’re breathing a different air. It’s the most beautiful race in the world. Also tactically it is different. The race can be open at any time.”

TAYLOR PHINNEY

“The crowds make Flanders the pinnacle. There are certain races on the calendar where there is an energy you receive as an athlete, which is the energy that sustains you or at least sustains me. It really inspires me and motivates me to be a part of these races.”

TOM SCULLY

“Coming from New Zealand, I’d compare it to the Rugby World Cup final in New Zealand with All-Blacks in the final. That atmosphere there, that’s what we see on Sunday. Tour of Flanders is world’s apart from where I came from, but it’s the world I live in, and it’s a pretty special thing.”

SEP VANMARCKE

“It’s the biggest race in Flanders in the year. As a Belgian, this is, of course, very important. The history, the cobbles and the atmosphere combine to make this race special for riders and fans alike.”

Vanmarcke opens Classics season with third at Omloop het Nieuwsblad

Strade Bianche takes the WorldTour peloton from the cobbles of Belgium to the white roads of Tuscany. The young-but-instant classic tempts general classification contenders and one-day specialists. The 12th edition of the Italian one-day race looks set to throw up an additional challenge beyond the dirt farm tracks synonymous with the course – snow!

“I’m not surprised by the popularity of this race,” said sport director Fabrizio Guidi. “I also think that there are conditions for the popularity to continue to grow. The scenario and characteristics of the course are unique. Strade Bianche represents the answers to those looking for both spectacle and tradition and offers the opportunity for victory to climbers and classics riders.”

An on-form Sep Vanmarcke captains the EF Education First – Drapac p/b Cannondale squad on Saturday. Vanmarcke, third last weekend at Omloop het Nieuwsblad, will be joined by road captain Simon Clarke, Alex Howes, Swedish road champion Kim Magnusson, Dani Moreno, Taylor Phinney and Tom Van Asbroeck. Phinney, who missed out on Abu Dhabi Tour due to illness, makes his season debut in Siena.

“We have a strong team and start with important ambitions,” said Guidi. “It’s difficult to predict how the race will unfold in light of the weather forecast. We have a plan for every situation. We are prepared. We start to win, as always, and strategy and team spirit will make a difference.”

What Strade Bianche lacks in heritage it more than compensates for in mystique. The race has been both a fan favorite and rider favorite since inception.

Maciej Bodnar holt den Sieg beim Einzelzeitfahren in Marseille

Nach einer langen Zitterpartie rechte am Ende eine einzige Sekunde Bodnar zum Sieg. Nachdem der Pole von BORA – hansgrohe auf der 10. Etappe noch kurz vor dem Ziel eingeholt wurde, holte er heute den lang ersehnten Etappensieg in Marseille.

Vor der „Tour d’honneur“ nach Paris morgen, stand heute das entscheidende Einzelzeitfahren in Marseille auf dem Programm. Ein 22,5 km langer Kampf gegen die Uhr, zwei Rennen, Eines um den Gesamtsieg der Rundfahrt, ein Zweites um den Tagessieg. Der Kurs war dabei durchaus auf die Spezialisten zugeschnitten. Ein schneller Start entlang des Meeres, gefolgt von einem kurzen, aber steilen Anstieg zum Wendepunkt bei Kilometer 15,6. Danach zurück zum Vélodrome, wo auch gestartet wurde.

BORA – hansgrohe hatte mit Maciej Bodnar einen der Mitfavoriten am Start. Der Pole hatte bei der letzten Zeitfahrweltmeisterschaft den vierten Platz belegt, und zeigte bei dieser Tour bereits auf der 11. Etappe, wo er erst kurz vor dem Ziel vom Feld eingeholt wurde, dass seine Form stimmt. Neben Bodnar, musste auch Emanuel Buchmann noch einmal alles geben. Für den jungen Deutschen ging es um den 15. Rang in der Gesamtwertung der Tour, den er einen Tag vor dem Ende keinesfalls abgeben wollte.

Nate Brown tops Tour’s King of the Mountain classification

Cannondale-Drapac will continue to #rockthedots at the Tour de France as the King of the Mountain jersey moved from the Taylor Phinney to Nate Brown on Monday following stage three. It was history in the making as Brown jumped to the top of the King of Mountain classification. Never before have two Americans worn polka dots in the same Tour.

“If you had told me I’d be the one to take the jersey, I would have told you that you were crazy, even this morning,” Brown said. “Obviously we had Phinney – if he had the aptitude to go into the break again today. It’s a tall task to ask someone to go into back-to-back breaks. Dylan [van Baarle] was our second guy. I was third on the list.”

Brown’s position at the top of the King of the Mountain classification, like Phinney’s, materialized from his ability to slip up the road. A three-rider escaped formed early. Phinney was tired from his outing on Sunday and Van Baarle had missed the move.

“The peloton completely blocked the field,” said Brown. “They weren’t going to let anyone by, but there was this Wanty guy that really, really wanted in on it, and I knew that. I stuck on his wheel. We got to this section where he could use a dirt road on the side to go around. I went with him, and we made it across.”

Taylor Phinney leads Tour de France KOM classification

Thirty-eight months ago Taylor Phinney had a crash that nearly ended his career. He had been slated to start his first Tour de France that July, five weeks after his accident. Instead he spent July of 2014 recovering from injury.

The long-awaited Tour start came three years later than planned. Phinney opened the three-week Grand Tour with 12th place in the stage one individual time trial. The result put him in a position to chase polka dots on stage two.

Phinney seized the opportunity, snagging the stage two’s only two available mountain points. He pulled on the first red-and-white-spotted jersey at the 104th edition of the Tour de France in Liége on Sunday.

“This was the plan this morning,” said Phinney. “To go out and get the KOM jersey. To have a plan work out on the first day of the race is great for the team. It impacts the general flow of things when we start off on a good note. This is my first year with the team, and I’m happy to be the guy that can remix the ignition as R. Kelley would say.”

The second stage of the Tour de France began in Düsseldorf, Germany and covered 203-kilometers en route to its finish in Liège, Belgium. The route featured two categorized climbs – both category four – at kilometer six and kilometer 183.

“We analyzed the stage, and the way the points were going to work today,” said sport director Tom Southam. “We knew if Taylor won the first climb, even if he didn’t win the second, because he was so high on GC, he would automatically get the jersey. We knew if he went in the break and the break went quickly, even if he was caught before the last climb, there would be a good chance he would still have it, an even better chance if he could make it further and get over the second climb.”

Phinney toed the start line 20 minutes before the neutral start was given to ensure he could positon himself at the front of the peloton.

“When he did that, we knew he took the plan seriously,” said Southam. “He applied himself and really got his head into what we had designed for the day, which is as much as you can ask from a rider really.”

When the flag dropped, Phinney pounced. His attack inspired the creation of a four-rider escape that included Yoann Offredo (Wanty-Gobert), Thomas Boudat (Direct Energie) and Laurent Pichon (Fortuneo-Oscaro). The quartet had a minute over the peloton when it reached the first climb. Phinney sprinted up the Côte de Grafenberg to claim the single point available to the first rider over the top.

“We got out there on the road today and we were running in the breakaway, and it felt like a dream,” said Phinney. “You’re racing a bike race but there are so many people out there. And you’re like – what is this? This is unreal. This is the Tour de France.”

The peloton kept Phinney and his breakmates on a short leash. Their maximum advantage of 3:30 came early.

Das Wetter, nun ja, wie am Vortag gab es unterwegs viel Regen, aber zumindest waren der Start in Düseldorf und vor allem die Zielankunft in Lüttich trocken, in Belgien kam sogar kurz die Sonne zum Vorschein und der Zielsprint konnte auf trockener, leicht ansteigender Straße im Gegenwind ausgetragen werden.

Bei Km 0 gab es den Angriff des Tages, eine 4-köpfige Spitzengruppe bestehend aus Taylor Phinney (Cannondale-Drapac), Thomas Boudat (Direct Energie), Laurent Pichon (Fortuneo-Oscaro) und Yoann Offredo (Wanty-Gobert) konnte sich sofort vom Feld lösen.

Die Bergwertungen des Tages konnte sich nach langer Verletzungspause Taylor Phinney sichern, so dass er auf der 3. Etappe das Bergtrikot tragen darf.

Die Sprinterteams Lotto Soudal, Quickstep, FDJ und Katusha ließen aber nie große Zweifel aufkommen, dass der Tag in einem Massensprint enden würde und gewährten den 4 Ausreißern keinen großen Vorsprung.

30km vor dem Ziel, bei rund einer Minute Vorsprung, gab es an der Spitze des Hauptfelds in einer rutschigen Kurve auf nasser Straße einen Massensturz, Reto Hollenstein (Katusha) rutschte das Vorderrad weg und viele große Namen waren von dem Sturz betroffen, allen voran Geraint Thomas, Chris Froome und Romain Bardet, der vor der Etappe bei der Einschreibekontrolle in einem Interview seine hervorragenden Deutsch Kenntnisse anwenden konnte.

First victory at the Giro for the young Australian sprinter. Bob Jungels retains the Maglia Rosa

Alberobello, 12 May 2017 – Australia’s Caleb Ewan (Orica-Scott) claimed his first ever stage victory at the Giro d’Italia as he outsprinted Fernando Gaviria (Quick-Step Floors) and Sam Bennett (Bora-Hansgrohe) in a spectacular bunch gallop in Alberobello after Dmitriy Kozontchuk (Gazprom-Rusvelo) and Giuseppe Fonzi (Wilier Triestina) got reined in with 20km to go. Bob Jungels (Quick-Step Floors) retained the Maglia Rosa for the fourth day.
To celebrate stage 7 of the 100th Giro d’Italia, the town of Alberobello dedicated the area next to today’s finish line to the Maglia Rosa, Bob Jungels.

First win at the Giro d’Italia for Caleb Ewan. It’s his second Grand Tour victory after stage 5 at the 2015 Vuelta a España.
This is the 30th stage victory for Australian riders at the Giro, 35 years after the first one, by Tasmania’s Michael Wilson in Cortona on 15 May 1982.
The age of the stage winners so far this year: 22 (Gaviria, Ewan), 25 (Polanc, Pöstlberger), 26 (Dillier), 34 (Greipel). Also in 2012, two riders won a stage before turning 23: Taylor Phinney, 21, and Andrea Guardini, 22.

Ronde van Vlaanderen

Wir haben seit Monaten darauf gewartet. Die Pflastersteine, die riesigen Fahnen im Wind, das Peloton wälzte sich auf den Koppenberg. Nach all den Vorspeisen ist es endlich Flandern. Und wir können nicht aufgeregter sein. Wir begrüßen Taylor Phinney zurück von seinen Verletzungen und Sep Vanmarcke zurück von seiner Krankheit. Regisseur Andreas Klier hat 20 Spots für Supportmitarbeiter aufgestellt, um mit Rädern und Bidons auf der Strecke zu stehen. Unsere Freunde Ashley und Jered Gruber haben uns am Donnerstag zu einer sonnigen Ronde Recon eingeladen. Unser Training begann in Oudenaarde und endete auf dem Kruisberg.  Aufregung herrschte in der Nähe der maximalen Kapazität.

History#17: Connie Carpenter – USA

Connie Carpenter, geboren am 26.2.1957, begann ihre sportliche Karriere als Eisschnellläuferin, aber auch im Rudern und Mehrkampf war sie aktiv. Erst später widmete sie sich aufgrund von Verletzungen ganz dem Radsport, sie errang dabei insgesamt 12 amerikanische Meistertitel auf Bahn und Straße. Das Foto zeigt Connie Carpenter am 3.9.1983 beim schweren Straßen WM-Rennen in Altenrhein, Schweiz, wenige Tage vorher wurde sie in Zürich Weltmeisterin auf der Bahn im 3000 Meter Verfolgungsfahren. 1984 errang sie ihren größten Erfolg, als sie 1984 in Los Angeles Olympiasiegerin im Straßenfahren wurde, ganz knapp im Sprint vor ihrer Teamkollegin Rebecca Twigg. Bronze ging an Sandra Schumacher. Dieser Erfolg war gleichzeitig auch das Ende ihrer sehr erfolgreichen Karriere als Radsportlerin. Sie ist verheiratet mit dem erfolgreichen Radprofi Davis Phinney und ihr Sohn, Taylor Phinney fährt im aktuellen BMC Radprofiteam.

Vanmarcke führt neue Cannondale-Drapac-Klassiker-Gruppe zum Eröffnungswochenende

Schließlich zieht die Klassiker-Saison in die Nähe. Cannondale-Drapac hofft, der Aufregung hinzuzufügen und schickt eine neue Gruppe zu Omloop Het Nieuwsblad.

Sep Vanmarcke, der vor kurzem von Slipstream Sports zurückgekehrt ist, leitet die Mannschaft, die aus Paddy Bevin, Kristijan Koren, Sebastian Langeveld, Taylor Phinney, Tom Scully, Tom Van Asbroeck und Dylan Van Baarle besteht. Andreas Klier und Ken Vanmarcke werden direkt antreten.

Vanmarcke, fährt für Garmin-Barracuda, gewann das 2012 Rennen, vor Tom Boonen und Juan Antonio Flecha in den letzten Kilometer.
„Ich bin nicht nervös“, sagte Vanmarcke. „Ich freue mich wirklich. Die letzten Wochen in Valencia und Algarve waren angenehm, um mit den Jungs zu fahren. Die nächste Zeit ist sehr wichtig, also bin ich wirklich motiviert es gut zu machen. Ich habe bereits Erfahrung in diesem Rennen, also gibt es keinen Grund nervös zu werden, aufgeregt ist ein besseres Wort. Ich bin zuversichtlich, dass wir in den nächsten Wochen gut vorankommen werden. “

Vanmarcke ist ruhig und vorsichtig. Omloop, dem es als Eröffnungswochenende dient, ist noch weit genug entfernt von den Denkmälern, dass ist nicht immer der Indikator Rennen, Menschen sollen denken.

„Ich glaube, ich bin noch nicht auf meiner obersten Ebene. Wir planen einen großen Monat, wenn die größten Klassiker auf der Karte sind. Aber meine Form sollte schon ziemlich gut sein, also werde ich meine Rolle im Finale spielen „, sagte Vanmarcke. „Welches Ergebnis es sein wird kann ich nicht wissen. Meine Teamkollegen sind auch in einer guten Form, also ist alles für uns möglich. “

BMC Racing Team mit zehn Fahrern bei den Weltmeisterschaften

Zehn Fahrer des BMC Racing Teams werden diese Woche an den UCI Strassen- und Zeitfahrweltmeisterschaften in Richmond, Virginia teilnehmen.

Rohan Dennis (Australien), Silvan Dillier und Stefan Küng (beide Schweiz) sowie Taylor Phinney (USA) werden am Mittwoch beim 53 Kilometer langen Zeitfahren ihre Nationen vertreten. Alle vier Fahrer waren Teil der erfolgreichen BMC Racing Team Equipe, die am Sonntag die Goldmedaille im Mannschaftszeitfahren gewonnen hat.

Phinney und Dillier werden am Sonntag ebenfalls das 261,4 Kilometer lange Strassenrennen zusammen mit Brent Bookwalter (USA), Jempy Drucker (Luxenburg), Philippe Gilbert (Belgien), Daniel Oss und Manuel Quinziato (beide für Italien) sowie Greg Van Avermaet (Belgien) bestreiten. Gilbert gewann den Strassenweltmeistertitel 2013.

Weiters wird der Stagiarie Tom Bohli (Schweiz) am Samstag beim Strassenrennen der U23 für das BMC Racing Team ins Rennen gehen. Bohli fuhr in diesem Jahr für das BMC Development Team.

„All diese Fahrer werden Ihre Nationen anständig vertreten“, sagte BMC Racing Team Präsident/General Manager Jim Ochowicz. „Wir sind stolz, so viele Fahrer diese Woche in die verschiedenen Rennen schicken zu können.“
