Danny van Poppel zeigt sich im dramatischen Finale der 16. Etappe kämpferisch und holt Platz drei

Nach dem dritten Ruhetag begann die letzte Woche der Vuelta mit einer 189 km langen Etappe zwischen Sanlúcar de Barrameda und Tomares im Westen Andalusiens. Hier konnten die Sprinter, die gut über die letzten beiden kurzen Steigungen kamen, zum letzten Mal vor dem Schlusstag in Madrid zum Zug kommen. Das Ausreißerduo, das lange Zeit das Rennen bestimmte blieb erfolglos und war 4 km vor dem Ziel wieder eingefangen. Angeführt von Ineos Grenadiers ging es dann ins Finale, wo P. Roglič gefolgt von P. Ackermann wenig später antraten. Kurz darauf schafften Danny van Poppel, M. Pedersen und F. Wright noch den Anschluss an das Spitzenduo, das mit einigen Sekunden Vorsprung auf die Verfolger die Zielgerade erreichte. In einem hektischen Finale zog Pedersen seinen Sprint von der Spitze an und sicherte sich den Sieg. Danny van Poppel holte sich nach einer starken Vorstelling Rang drei.

„Am Anfang war die Etappe recht einfach, aber das Finale mit dem steilen Anstieg am Ende war alles andere als einfach. Roglič ging, ich war am Hinterrad von Pedersen und wollte die Lücke schließen. Ich bin wirklich über das Limit gegangen, um auf Roglič aufzuschließen. Das Tempo war so hoch, dass ich mich nicht mehr richtig erholen konnte. Ich musste richtig tief gehen. Kurze, kraftvolle Anstiege liegen mir normalerweise, aber das hat mich heute viel Energie gekostet und am Ende war ich wirklich à bloc – vor allem bei der Hitze!“ – Danny van Poppel

Im Sprint war Mads Pedersen wiederum der stärkste und wir hatten um Platz zwei das Nachsehen. Pedersen doubles up in a crazy finale!

Mads Pedersen (Trek-Segafredo) won stage 16 of La Vuelta 22 in a five-man sprint after Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) attacked in the streets of Tomares. The Slovenian 3-time winner of the Spanish Grand Tour opened a gap while Remco Evenepoel (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl) suffered a puncture inside the last 3km… but Roglic crashed with 75m to go. Pascal Ackermann (UAE Team Emirates) and Danny van Poppel (Bora-Hansgrohe) rounded out the podium of the day with a gap of 8’’ to the first part of the bunch. Evenepoel retains La Roja for the 11th stage in a row, the longest run since Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) took his first GC win in 2019. The favorites for the overall victory will reignite their battles on Wednesday with an unprecedented summit finish at Monasterio de Tentudia.

The final week of La Vuelta 22 begins with a 189.4km from Sanlucar de Barrameda to Tomares. The course is mostly flat but the finish could prove tricky for the sprinters. 142 riders return to action, without Esteban Chaves (EF Education-EasyPost) nor Maxim van Gils (Lotto Soudal).

Trek-Segafredo and Cofidis control the day
Ander Okamika (Burgos-BH) and Luis Angel Maté (Euskaltel-Euskadi) attack from the start to quickly make the break.
This is Okamika’s fourth day at the front in La Vuelta 22 while Maté is up there to deliver on the promise he made ahead of the race to donate one tree to plant in La Sierra Bermeja for every kilometre he spends in breakaways.
Mads Pedersen’s Trek-Segafredo and Bryan Coquard’s Cofidis quickly take the reins of the bunch to control the gap under 4 minutes.
Into the last 50km, the same two teams still drive the bunch and the gap is down to 2 minutes. They are eventually caught with 13km to go, after 176km at the front.

Pedersen rises, Roglic goes down
Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) ignites a crazy finale with an attack with 2.5km to go. At the same moment, Remco Evenepoel (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl) indicates he suffers a puncture.
Mads Pedersen (Trek-Segafredo), Pascal Ackermann (UAE Team Emirates), Danny van Poppel (Bora-Hansgrohe) and Fred Wright (Bahrain Victorious) follow Roglic’s move. The Danish star powers to victory while Roglic touches Wright in the sprint and hits the deck.
Evenepoel crosses the line with a gap of 3’10’’. Since his mechanical happened inside the last 3km, he is classified with the same time as Quentin Pacher (Groupama-FDJ), who led the first bunch through the line with a gap of 8’’.

13. Etappe der Vuelta: Danny van Poppel Fünfter im Bergaufsprint in Montilla

Mitten durch Andalusien führte die 168,4 km lange wellige Etappe von Ronda nach Montilla und bot den schnellen Männern eine der letzten Chancen bei der Vuelta. BORA – hansgrohe versuchte mit Danny van Poppel, der vor zwei Tagen im Sprint Zweiter wurde, heute erneut ein starkes Ergebnis einzufahren. Das Team aus Raubling beteiligte sich an der Nachführarbeit um das Ausreißertrio rechtzeitig einzuholen, und nachdem die Spitze gestellt war bereitete das Team den finalen Sprint für Danny vor. Auf der Zielgeraden fuhr der Niederländer zwar ganz vorne im Feld, aber ungefähr 400 m vor der Ziellinie trat P. Ackermann an, wurde aber vom Tagessieger M. Pedersen überholt, während Danny den 5. Platz belegte.

„Das Finale war viel härter, als wir erwartet hatten. Ich glaube, viele Fahrer haben unterschätzt, wie steil das Finale eigentlich war. Ich hatte nicht die nötige Durchschlagskraft heute, um den Sieg zu holen. Als Ackermann und Pedersen vorne waren, sah ich, dass das Ziel immer noch etwas weiter weg war, also wartete ich ein bisschen, aber sie waren schon zu weit vorne um sie wieder einzuholen. Ich habe mein Bestes gegeben, aber am Ende war es nicht mein Tag.“ – Danny van Poppel

„Als Sprinter erhofft man sich natürlich immer mehr als Platz fünf. Trotzdem haben die Jungs gut dafür gearbeitet, besonders Jonas, der an der Nachführarbeit beteiligt war, und Ryan, der Danny in eine gute Position gebracht hat. Letztendlich war der Sprint etwas zu hart auf den letzten vier Kilometern und der Sieg von Pedersen geht damit verdient in Ordnung. Pedersen takes his stage

After three places of 2nd in the early stages of La Vuelta 22, Mads Pedersen (Trek-Segafredo) powered to the win on day 13. The Danish 2019 world champion made the most of the uphill finish in Montilla to dominate Bryan Coquard (Cofidis) and Pascal Ackermann (UAE Team Emirates) after the peloton controlled a three-man breakaway on the roads of Andalusia. This is Pedersen’s first victory in the Spanish Grand Tour, a month and a half after he opened up his three-week-event tally in the Tour de France. On the day after his crash towards Peñas Blancas, Remco Evenepoel (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl) safely went through the stage. On Saturday, he will have to defend La Roja on the slopes of Sierra de la Pandera.
In between two Andalusian summit finishes, stage 13 of La Vuelta 22 is a flatter one for the sprinters or the baroudeurs to battle for victory in Montilla. The finish is uphill with a final straight of 300m at 5%. The 147 finishers of stage 12 start from Ronda.

Usual suspects at the front
Three attackers set off in the first kilometre of the stage: Julius van den Berg (EF Education-EasyPost), Ander Okamika (Burgos-BH) and Joan Bou (Euskatel-Euskadi).
Mads Pedersen’s Trek-Segafredo, Kaden Groves’ BikeExchange-Jayco and Bryan Coquard’s Cofidis are quick to take the reins of the bunch. The gap never gets higher than 3’20’’.

Ackermann tries, Pedersen powers to victory
Into the last 50km, Tim Merlier’s Alpecin-Deceuninck and Danny van Poppel’s Bora-Hansgrohe also join the chase. The peloton enter the last 30km with a gap of 1’09’’.
Van den Berg is the first attacker to be caught, just after the intermediate sprint (14.4km to go). Okamika and Bou are eventually reeled in with 9.5km to go.
In Montilla, Pascal Ackermann (UAE Team Emirates) opens up the sprint with 500m to go. Pedersen is quick to react and eventually overtake the German sprinter. It’s too late for Coquard to get back despite a strong effort.

Erste Hitzeetappe der Tour bringt Sieg einer Ausreißergruppe

Die angesagte Hitzewelle in Frankreich setzte auf der 14. Etappe der Tour voll ein. Dennoch wurde wieder vom Start weg attackiert und vor allem Nils Politt war zu Beginn sehr aktiv. Als sich zuerst drei Fahrer lösen konnten, setzte eine rund 20-Mann-Gruppe nach, in der Nils Politt und Patrick Konrad für BORA – hansgrohe waren. Die Sprinter im Feld hofften allerdings auf eine Chance in Saint-Étienne und fuhren die Lücke zu dieser Verfolgergruppe konsequent zu. In einer Konterattacke schafften noch vier Fahrer zur Spitze aufzuschließen und letztlich konnte diese Gruppe den Sieg unter sich ausmachen. Die Kräfte der Sprinterteams waren auf den letzten 25 Kilometern verschließen und am Ende ging M. Pedersen als Erster über die Ziellinie. Obwohl auch im Feld durch die Hitze und Seitenwind immer wieder viele Fahrer abgehängt wurden, gab es am Ende keine Änderungen in der Gesamtwertung.

“Ich hatte gute Beine und hatte mir die Etappe schon letzte Woche angestrichen. Nachdem sich an der ersten Bergwertung die Gruppen bildeten, dachte ich eigentlich, dass es das war. Aber Alpecin hat das Loch wieder zugefahren. Nach dem Konter war das Rennen dann leider gelaufen. Es war heute den ganzen Tag hart, denn die Hitze war brutal. Durch das hohe Tempo konnte man kaum Flaschen holen, und wenn man mal am Auto war, hat man so lange nach vorne gebraucht, dass man schon wieder leer war. Ein paar Chancen haben wir hier noch und ich bin zuversichtlich, denn meine Form ist immer noch sehr gut.” – Nils Politt

Pedersen keeps the Tour Danish

Mads Pedersen took the third stage victory for Danish riders in a Tour de France that started from Copenhagen and has Jonas Vingegaard in the yellow jersey after the Alps. The 2019 world champion won stage 13 from an escape. Fred Wright and Hugo Houle, his last two breakaway companions, rounded out the stage podium.

GANNA AND KÜNG, TOP TIME TRIALISTS AT THE FRONT
158 riders took the start of stage 13 at Le Bourg d’Oisans at 13.18. One non-starter: Warren Barguil (Arkéa-Samsic). Kamil Gradek (Bahrain Victorious), Taco van der Hoorn (Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert), Nils Politt (Bora-Hansgrohe), Matîs Louvel (Arkéa-Samsic) and Jérémy Lecroq (B&B Hotels-KTM) formed a breakaway group at km 15. But it was bunched up at km 22. Filippo Ganna (Ineos Grenadier), Stefan Küng (Groupama-FDJ) and Matteo Jorgenson (Movistar) rode away in the first ascent to cross the top of côte de Brié (km 30) in that order. A group of 19 riders with the likes of last year’s stage winners Bauke Mollema and Nils Politt tried to come across but was swallowed by the peloton riding over 50km/h in the streets of Grenoble. Hugo Houle (Israel-Premier Tech), Fred Wright (Bahrain Victorious), Mads Pedersen and Quinn Simmons (Trek-Segafredo) joined the leading trio at km 51.

CALEB EWAN’S CRASH CHANGES THE RACE SCENARIO
Alpecin-Deceuninck was the first sprinter’s team to react at the head of the peloton but the deficit was 2’ at km 65. Lotto-Soudal took over with Philippe Gilbert setting the pace for a long time. Pedersen passed the col de Parménie (km 79), the main climb of the day, in first position while the bunch trailed by 2’35’’. Caleb Ewan crashed in a curve at km 118. He resumed racing with deficit of 2’ from the main peloton. He surrendered 25km further as he struggled to get back on. Several other riders were struggling in hot conditions on a lumpy terrain. The deficit of the peloton went up to 3’25’’ at the top of côte de Saint-Romain-en-Gal (km 148) as most of the sprinters’ teams got discouraged. That’s where Team BikeExchange-Jayco finally moved up to the helm of the bunch.

THREE RIDERS FOR THE VICTORY
After working a lot to make the breakaway work in favour of Pedersen, Simmons let his companions go. Küng, Ganna, Houle, Wright, Jorgenson and Pedersen approached the 20km to go mark with an advantage of 2’15’’. Pedersen attacked in a hill 12.5km before the end. Houle and Wright came across to him. The Danish rider was obviously the strongest of the three. He tried to finish solo but his two adversaries forced him to sprint for the victory. He made it by launching his sprint 300 metres before the finishing line drawn nearby the Geoffroy-Guichard stadium. This is his maiden stage win in a Grand Tour, his 24th as a pro at the age of 26.

Top-10 für Danny van Poppel auf der dritten Etappe von Paris-Nizza

Die dritte Etappe von Paris-Nizza war mit 190,8 Kilometern von Vierzon nach Dun le Palestel der zweitlängste Tagesabschnitt der Rundfahrt. Eine flache erste Hälfte gefolgt von hügeligem Terrain und drei Bergwertungen der dritten Kategorie im zweiten Teil des Tages. Nach einem schweren Finale kam ein reduziertes Peloton in Dun le Palestel an. Den ansteigenden Sprint konnte M. Pedersen für sich entscheiden. Danny van Poppel schaffte mit Platz acht noch den Sprung in die Top-10 des Tages. Aleksandr Vlasov erreichte als 15. zeitgleich mit dem Sieger das Ziel und verbesserte sich in der Gesamtwertung auf Platz neun.

„Ein guter aber harter Tag! Am Ende wurde es richtig schnell, Aleks und Max haben mich noch gut unterstützt, im Finale war ich dann aber auf mich alleine gestellt. Ich habe versucht voll mit zu gehen und fühlte mich ok, aber nicht super gut. Irgendwie habe ich es geschafft, vorne mit dabei zu bleiben, was mich selbst sogar ein wenig überrascht hat. Ich bin zufrieden mit dem Ergebnis heute und freue mich auch für Aleks, der heute wieder ohne Zeitverlust in der Gesamtwertung das Ziel erreicht hat. Ziel war es heute mit Aleks ohne Zeitverlust über die Ziellinie zu kommen und nach Möglichkeit mit einem schnellen Mann noch in den Sprint einzugreifen. Beides hat geklappt und mit Danny van Poppel auf Rang acht konnten wir noch ein Top-10 Ergebnis holen. Im Zeitfahren morgen gilt es für die GC Fahrer auf jeden Fall die Karten auf den Tisch zu legen. Pedersen takes his turn

A demanding day of racing leading to an uphill sprint – stage 3’s characteristics perfectly suited Mads Pedersen (Trek-Segafredo), who sprinted to his second victory of the season and his first in Paris-Nice. The former World Champion dominated Bryan Coquard (Cofidis) and Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma) in Dun-le-Palestel. Stage 4 will bring a different challenge to the riders, with a 13.9km individual time-trial from Domérat to Montluçon, ahead of the mountainous final days that will crown the winner of the 80th edition of Paris-Nice.

A mild weather welcomes the 148 riders taking on stage 3 of Paris-Nice 2022 from Vierzon (1 non-starter: Israel-Premier Tech’s Guillaume Boivin). Three breakaway artists quickly get on the move: Thomas De Gendt (Lotto Soudal), Owain Doull (EF Education-EasyPost) and Alexis Gougeard (B&B Hotels-KTM) break away from the bunch at km 3.

The attackers gain 5′
Jasper Philipsen’s Alpecin-Fenix quickly send Senne Leysen at the front of the bunch to control the gap on the flat first half of the stage. Mads Pedersen’s Trek-Segafredo collaborate as Julien Bernard starts pulling when the gap hits its maximum: 5’10’’ at km 64. Biniam Girmay’s Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert Matériaux also put a put rider at the front of the peloton as the attackers enter the last 80km with a lead of 4 minutes.
De Gendt makes sure he goes first atop the first two categorised ascents of the day to defend the polka dot jersey conquered on day 1 by his Lotto Soudal teammate Matthew Holmes. Meanwhile, tension increases in the peloton as many teams try to position their leaders towards the front on a rolling terrain.

Tension on the ascents
The gap is down to 1’45’’ when the bunch cross the line for the first time (43.9km to go). Riders from Ineos Grenadiers, Bahrain Victorious and Team DSM – with a short-lived attack by Soren Kragh Andersen – maintain a hard pace on the way to the last categorised climb of the day, Côte de Le Peyroux (2.8km, 5.2%), to be summited with 22.6km to go.
After a flurry of attacks, Mathieu Burgaudeau (TotalEnergies) is the only attacker slightly detached from the bunch over the top. Sprinters such as Fabio Jakobsen (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl Team), Sam Bennett (Bora-Hansgrohe), Dylan Groenewegen (BikeExchange-Jayco) and Niccolò Bonifazio (TotalEnergies) are already dropped.

Stuyven sets Pedersen for victory
Burgaudeau is caught on the following downhill. The Yellow Jersey Christophe Laporte takes the reins for Jumbo-Visma with 17km to go. Mike Teunissen (Jumbo-Visma) returns to drive the bunch into the last 10km alongside riders from Oliver Naesen’s AG2R Citroën and Ivan Garcia Cortina’s Movistar.
Kragh attacks again with 8km to go, but Garcia Cortina’s teammates reel him in 5.5km away from the line. AG2R Citroën drives the bunch into the last kilometre but Jasper Stuyven launches his Trek-Segafredo companion Mads Pedersen to victory, ahead of Bryan Coquard (Cofidis) and Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma). Christophe Laporte goes down with Kevin Geniets in the sprint, but they both get back on their bikes and the Frenchman retains the Yellow Jersey on the eve of the TT.
