Danny van Poppel Zehnter im Sprint der dritten Etappe des Critérium du Dauphiné, Sam Bennett relegiert

Die dritte Etappe des Critérium du Dauphiné war mit 194km der längste Tagesabschnitt der Rundfahrt. Dank überschaubar topografischer Schwierigkeit bot die Etappe eine der wenigen Möglichkeiten für die Sprinter. Für Chaos sorgte 47km vor dem Ziel ein Massensturz im Feld, der aber glücklicherweise für alle BORA – hansgrohe Profis glimpflich verlief.
Im technisch anspruchsvollen Finale leistete BORA – hansgrohe perfekte Vorarbeit für Sam Bennett, der sich nur C. Laporte geschlagen geben musste. Bennett wurde nach dem Rennen von der Jury auf den letzten Platz seiner Gruppe relegiert, weil er im Sprint seine Linie verlassen hatte.

Reaktionen im Ziel
„Wir sind froh, heute trotz mehrerer Stürze und etwas Chaos im Feld, alle Fahrer sicher über die Ziellinie gebracht zu haben. Patrick Gamper kam zwar zu Boden, konnte das Rennen aber mit leichten Blessuren beenden. Die Jungs sind ein super Rennen gefahren, haben Jai Hindley eskortiert und für Sam Bennett den Sprint perfekt vorbereitet. Nach dem Rennen wurde Sam Bennett relegiert, weil er seine Linie verlassen hatte. Laporte keeps the French party going

Make it two stage wins for Christophe Laporte (Jumbo-Visma) in the Critérium du Dauphiné 2023, and three for the French stars! With his yellow and blue jersey on his shoulders, the leader of overall standings dominated the sprint of Le Coteau on Tuesday, after Julian Alaphilippe (Soudal Quick-Step) won stage 2 on the day before. This is the first time since 1960 that French riders win the first three stages of the Critérium du Dauphiné. In the final run-in to the line, Laporte got the best of the pure sprinters Sam Bennett (Bora-Hansgrohe) and Dylan Groenewegen (Jayco AlUla). But the two of them were relegated after the stage. Laporte also strengthens his overall lead on the eve of a 31.1km time trial from Cours to Belmont-de-la-Loire.

The 141-man peloton start from Monistrol-sur-Loire at noon. And two riders immediately get on the move: Mathieu Burgaudeau (Total Energies) sets off, Lorenzo Milesi (Team DSM) follows him. They quickly open a gap of 1’55’’ but the Italian youngster doesn’t keep up with his effort after 15km. Burgaudeau is alone at the front. And his lead reaches a maximum of 6’05’’ at km 30.
Dylan Groenewegen’s Jayco AlUla and Sam Bennett’s Bora-Hansgrohe are the first teams to move to the front of the bunch to control the stage. Attacks fly again on the first ascent of the day, the cat-2 Côte de Bellevue-la-Montagne (summit at km 40.9).
Burgaudeau goes first at the summit, and Pierre Latour (Total Energies) follows to take 3 points. But Donavan Grondin’s polka-dot jersey remains out of reach after the youngster from Arkéa Samsic claimed 7 points in the first two stages.

Alaphilippe tries to upset Laporte
With a hardened pace, the peloton only trail by 4 minutes at the summit. Some teams try to create splits in the bunch. But everybody is vigilant and the situation settles down. Burgaudeau waits for the peloton and is caught at km 69. From there, a bunched pack makes its way to the finish in Le Coteau, with a short neutralisation to go past a protest at km 91.

Soudal Quick-Step and Julian Alaphilippe try to make the most of the intermediate sprint. The Frenchman is 2nd in the overall standings, with the same time as Christophe Laporte (Jumbo-Visma)… But he also takes the second place in Sainte-Foy-Saint-Sulpice (km 139.5), behind Christophe Laporte (Jumbo-Visma), who snatches 3 bonus seconds (vs 2 for Alaphilippe).

Bennett tries, Laporte succeeds
Many riders hit the deck with a mass crash 48 kilometres away from the line. Andrey Zeits (Qazaqstan) is forced to abandon while riders such as Alaphilippe, Matteo Jorgenson (Movistar) and Matteo Trentin (UAE Team Emirates) gradually make their way back to the bunch.
The sprinters survive the final ascent of the day, the cat-4 Côte de Pinay, summited with 18.5 km to go. The sprinters survive the climb and fly to a high-speed battle in Le Coteau. Alaphilippe suffers a mechanical with 7km to go but he manages to get back 3.5km before the finish.
Bora-Hansgrohe launch the sprint for Sam Bennett but the Irish star falters in the final 50 metres. Christophe Laporte seizes this opportunity to claim his second stage win in the Critérium du Dauphiné 2023.

Sam Bennett verpasst im Bergaufsprint der zweiten Etappe die Top 10 nur knapp

Am zweiten Tag des Critérium du Dauphiné stand eine 167km lange Etappe auf dem Programm. Nach dem Start in Brassac-les-Mines ging es durch hügeliges Terrain, ehe in La Chaise-Dieu eine leicht ansteigende Zielgerade auf die Fahrer wartete. Eine sechsköpfige Ausreißergruppe wurde vom Peloton kontrolliert, die letzten Ausreißer konnten auf den finalen drei Kilometern gestellt werden. Im Massensprint sicherte sich J. Alaphilippe den Tagessieg, Sam Bennett verpasste knapp die Top 10 und landete auf Rang 11.

Reaktionen im Ziel
„Ich habe mich zu Beginn der Etappe nicht super gut gefühlt, das wurde dann aber zum Finale hin wesentlich besser. Es war einer dieser Tage, an denen die Beine im Verlauf der Etappe zu drehen beginnen. Auf den letzten 200m war ich in guter Position, habe dann aber vielleicht etwas zu lange gewartet. Alaphilippe, the great rebound

Julian Alaphilippe (Soudal Quick-Step) took a significant stage win on day 2 of the Critérium du Dauphiné, outsprinting a reduced bunch in La Chaise-Dieu. „I’m tired of speaking of bad luck“, the French star said ahead of the Critérium du Dauphiné. And indeed, he sent a very different message with his legs as he edged the Olympic Champion Richard Carapaz (EF Education-EasyPost) to take his second victory of the year and the first in the UCI WorldTour since a stage of the Itzulia Basque Country in 2022. Natnael Tesfatsion (Trek Segafredo) rounds out of the podium of the day, just ahead of Christophe Laporte (Jumbo-Visma), who retains the yellow and blue jersey ahead of stage 3, leading to Le Coteau. This is the third stage win for Julian Alaphilippe in the Critérium du Dauphiné, after previous successes in 2018 and 2019. Each of them was followed by stellar performances in the Tour de France.

After the showers from day 1, the sun accompanies the 144 riders at the start of stage 2, in Brassac-les-Mines. The first kilometres are nonetheless eventful, with many attacks and a significant crash at km 8. Three riders are forced to withdraw: Steven Kruijswijk (Jumbo-Visma), Staff Cras (Total Energies) and Romain Combaud (Team DSM).
The first baroudeurs to open differences set off at km 6.5: Andrea Piccolo (EF Education-EasyPost), Jonas Gregaard (Uno-X), Victor Campeanaerts (Lotto Soudal) and Donavan Grondin (Arkéa Samsic).
Attacks keep flying and three more riders make it a 7-man breakaway: Nans Peters (AG2R Citroën) bridges the gap at km 21, Pierre Latour (Total Energies) and Kenny Elissonde (Trek Segafredo) do it at km 23.

Grondin’s delight
After an intense battle, the peloton let the attackers go. But Jumbo-Visma quickly control the gap at under 2 minutes.
With the polka-dot jersey on his shoulders after his previous breakaway in stage 1, Donavan Grondin makes the most of the cat-3 ascents of the Col de Toutée (summit at km 46.7) and Col des Fourches (km 53.8) to consolidate his lead in the KOM standings
The attackers head to the final circuit with the peloton coming hot on their heels. Grondin lets his companions go 5 kilometres before they cross the line for the first time and take on a 35.1km circuit featuring the cat-4 climb of Côte des Guêtes (1km at 8%, to be summited 9.7km away from the finish).

Grondin’s struggle
Into the last 50km, Soudal Quick-Step and Jumbo-Visma control the gap between 35 and 55’’. The intensity is too high for Grondin, who needs to stop on the side of the road as he visibly suffers from his left thigh. The Frenchman gets back on his bike to try and complete the stage, with another polka-dot jersey to claim on the podium.
Latour goes first atop the first ascent of the Côte des Guêtes but his legs abandon him a few kilometres later and he drops back to the bunch with 39km to go. Peters, Piccolo, Elissonde, Gregaard, Victor Campeanaerts are 35’’ ahead of the bunch as they enter the final lap. Grondin trails by 9’30’’.

Another thrilling finale
The peloton up the ante in the final lap and the gap is down to 15’’ when Campenaerts attacks, with 28 km to go. Only Elissonde follows him. And the two of them manage to bring their lead back up to 30’’ ahead of the final ascent of the Côte des Guêtes. But they’re caught halfway through the climb.
Tobias Bayer (Alpecin Deceuninck) immediately counter-attacks and opens a gap of 13’’ at the summit, with 10km to go. He is caught after 6km at the front. Harrison Sweeny (Lotto Dstny) also attacks but Andrea Bagioli (Soudal Quick-Step) reels him in. And Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) himself pulls in the last kilometre, like he did on the day before.
But this time, Richard Carapaz (EF Education-EasyPost) opens up the sprint. Julian Alaphilippe (Soudal Quick-Step) follows him and pounces to victory. Christophe Laporte (Jumbo-Visma) retains the yellow and blue jersey but settles for the fourth position on the day, behind Natnael Tesfatsion (Trek-Segafredo).
As the winners of the day collected their prizes, Grondin finished the stage 22’48“ after the leaders, just inside the time-cut of 23’30“.

Danny van Poppel zum Auftakt des Critérium du Dauphiné auf Platz 6

Die Auftaktetappe des achttägigen Critérium du Dauphiné (2.UWT) in Frankreich fand auf einem anspruchsvollen, 158km langen Rundkurs in Chambon-sur-Lac statt. Das Rennen war geprägt von immer wieder einsetzendem Gewitterregen und dementsprechend schwierigen Verhältnissen. Der letzte Fahrer einer fünfköpfige Ausreißergruppe wurde erst auf der Ziellinie vom deutlich reduzierten Feld gestellt. Während sich Danny van Poppel im Sprint Rang sechs sicherte, überquerte Jai Hindley ex aequo mit dem Tagessieger C. Laporte und ohne Zeitverlust in der Gesamtwertung die Ziellinie.

„Die Etappe war schwer einzuschätzen, von Sprint bis Ausreißersieg war alles möglich. Am Ende war es ein schweres Rennen mit harten Positionskämpfen auf dem letzten Kilometer. Vielleicht bin ich etwas zu früh gegangen, andererseits wäre ich sonst im Finale blockiert gewesen. Ich freue mich, meine erste Dauphiné in zehn Jahren mit einer Top 10 Platzierung zu beginnen.“ Danny van Poppel

„Wie erwartet ein harter Tag, der durch den Regen noch schwerer geworden ist. Dass es kein klassischer Massensprint werden würde, hatten wir bereits vermutet. Trotzdem hätten wir auf eine Zielankunft mit Sam Bennett spekuliert. Am Ende haben aber nur noch Jumbo-Visma und wir auf einen Sprint hingearbeitet, dementsprechend schnell und schwer zu kontrollieren hat sich das Rennen entwickelt. Insgesamt sind die Jungs heute stark gefahren. Laporte strikes with the perfect timing

Christophe Laporte (Jumbo-Visma) is the first leader of the 75th Critérium du Dauphiné after a thrilling ending of stage 1, this Sunday in Chambon-sur-Lac. The winner of the Tour de France Jonas Vingegaard himself had to pull a reduced bunch to reel in Rune Herregodts (Intermarché-Circus-Wanty), who attacked at the beginning of the day and was only caught inside the last 20 metres. The young Belgian baroudeur even finished 3rd on the day… But he couldn’t resist Laporte, who powered to his third victory in 2023, in only nine days of racing. He now wants to honour the jersey on day 2, another leg sapping stage from Brassac-les-Mines to La Chaise-Dieu.

The 147-man peloton set off from the shores of Chambon-sur-Lac early in the afternoon. The demanding course inspires attackers and it takes 12 kilometres of battle to shape the breakaway of the day. Rune Herregodts (Intermarché-Circus-Wanty) and Fabio Van den Bossche (Alpecin Deceuninck) are the first riders to get away. They are quickly joined by Donavan Grondin (Arkéa Samsic), and then Dorian Godon (AG2R Citroën) and Brent Van Moer (Lotto Dstny).

The Belgian attacker participates in the Critérium du Dauphiné for the third time, and it’s also the third time he makes the break on day 1. In 2020, he crashed out of the race while riding at the front, but in 2021, he was the first leader of the Critérium du Dauphiné… The peloton may be wary of him and his strong companions: Jumbo-Visma and Bora-Hansgrohe quickly start pulling to control the gap.

Hayter abandons
On roads that will be visited by the Tour de France and the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift next month, Donavan Grondin (Arkéa Samsic) chases the first KOM points, up the cat-4 ascents of Côte du Mont-Dore (km 33.8) and Côte de La Stèle (km 41.6). Meanwhile, the bunch control the gap at around 2 minutes.
Rains shower the riders as they reach Besse-et-Saint-Anastaise, 75km into the stage. On wet and slippery roads, several riders hit the deck, including Ethan Hayter (Ineos Grenadiers) one of the favourites for the stage. As he chases his way back to the bunch, the British rising star goes down again and is forced to abandon as the race enters the final circuit, with a loop of 23.1km to cover three times.

Temperature rises despite the rain
As they cross the line for the first time, the gap is up to 2’45’’. It even reaches 3’ on the first ascent of the cat-4 Côte du Rocher de l’Aigle (1km at 7.3%, summit 11.1km away from the line). Donavan Grondin (Arkéa Samsic) goes first over the top and all but secures the polka dot jersey.
The intensity increases on the closing circuit. Grondin is dropped from the breakaway with 44km to go, and Van den Bossche suffers the same fate a kilometre later. Meanwhile, Jumbo-Visma and Soudal Quick-Step set a strong pace and many riders are dropped, including sprinters such as Sam Bennett (Bora-Hansgrohe) and Dylan Groenewegen (Jayco AlUla).

Heartbreak for Herregodts
Into the final lap, Van Moer is also dropped from the lead group with 18km to go. Godon and Herregodts still push together but the peloton is only 20 seconds behind.
The Belgian drops Godon on the final ascent of the Côte du Rocher de l’Aigle. The peloton only trail by 8’’… But Herregodts pushes his lead to 15’’ on the downhill towards Chambon-sur-Lac!
All of Jumbo-Visma teammates are spent and Jonas Vingegaard has to pull the bunch under the last kilometre banner. Herregodts pushes. But it’s heartbreak for the Belgian youngster as Christophe Laporte (Jumbo-Visma) flies past him inside the last 20 metres to take the stage ahead of Matteo Trentin (UAE Team Emirates) and the attacking hero of the day.

Nils Politt in den Top 10 bei Dwars door Vlaanderen

Dwars door Vlaanderen war mit einer Kombination aus steilen Anstiegen und Kopfsteinpflasterabschnitten die letzte Gelegenheit für die Fahrer, ihre Beine vor dem zweiten Monument der Saison, der Flandernrundfahrt am Sonntag zu testen. Mit dem Start in Roeselare und Ziel in Waregem umfasste die Strecke zwar nur 183,7 km, war aber mit elf der berüchtigten Helligen und einer Reihe von Kopfsteinpflastersektoren gespickt und somit kein leichtes Rennen. Eine Ausreißergruppe löste sich zunächst vom Peloton, doch mit rund 6 km vor dem Ziel kam das Rennen wieder zusammen ehe sich dann erneut zehn Fahrer vom dezimierten Feld mit Nils Politt und Danny van Poppel absetzten. Das Rennen wurde entschieden, als 4,5 km vor dem Ziel eröffnet, als Laporte aus dem Spitzenfeld heraus attackierte und ihm keiner mehr folgen konnte. Nils überquerte die Ziellinie als Zehnter, während Danny den 18. Rang holte.

Reaktionen im Ziel
„Es war wieder ein sehr hartes Rennen. Es ging relativ früh los und war, ehrlich gesagt, sehr hektisch, mit einigen Stürzen an Schlüsselstellen. Dann ist vor uns leider Merlier am Berg ten Houte gestürzt und es ging erstmal die Lücke auf Richtung Kanarieberg, die wir dann wieder glücklicherweise schließen konnten. An der Cote de Trieu konnte ich leider der ersten Gruppe gerade so nicht folgen. Ich habe gemerkt, dass die Beine von Sonntag einfach noch ein bisschen schwer sind. Trotzdem bin ich mit einem Top Ten Ergebnis zufrieden, besonders wenn man bedenkt, dass viele der Sprinter noch hinten in meiner Gruppe waren.“ – Nils Politt

„Noch ein Klassiker in der Tasche. Wir waren an den Anstiegen präsent, und nachdem der Sieg an Laporte ging, versuchten wir um den zweiten Platz zu sprinten. Nils wurde am Ende Zehnter, was nicht ganz das Ergebnis war, um das wir heute gekämpft haben. Danny van Poppel Neunter bei Gent – Wevelgem

Die flämischen Frühjahrsklassiker gingen heute weiter mit Gent-Wevelgem, einem Rennen das auf knapp 261 km neun Hellingen, tückische Kopfsteinpflastersektoren und Schotterabschnitte aufwies. Ständiger Regen, kalte Temperaturen und Wind erschwerte das Rennen noch zusätzlich. Auf den ersten flachen 160 km setzte sich eine Ausreißergruppe ab, die in der ersten Rennhälfte weniger als drei Minuten Vorsprung herausfahren konnte. Vor dem Monteberg kam alles wieder zusammen, aber es dauerte nicht lange, bis die Angriffe einsetzten und am Kemmelberg attackierten Van Aert und Laporte. BORA-hansgrohe war mit Danny van Poppel, Nils Politt und Marco Haller in der Verfolgergruppe vertreten. Nach der letzten Überquerung des Kemmelbergs waren Nils und Danny immer noch mit dabei und bereiteten den Sprint um den dritten Platz für Danny vor. Am Ende gelang dem Niederländer, beim Sieg von Laporte, die erste Top-10 Platzierung für BORA-hansgrohe diese Woche in Belgien.

„Mit jeder Überquerung des Kemmelbergs habe ich mich eigentlich stärker gefühlt und ich hatte heute gute Chancen auf eine starke Platzierung. Nachdem es klar wurde, dass die zwei Jumbo- Visma Fahrer nicht zurückzuholen waren, wollte ich auf jeden Fall um einen Podestplatz kämpfen. Es war deshalb schade, dass wir den letzten Angriffen nicht kontern konnten, weil damit ein besseres Ergebnis außer Reichweite war. Aber ich bin froh, dass ich unsere erste Top-10 Platzierung diese Woche einfahren konnte.“ – Danny van Poppel

„Es war ein sehr harter Tag, denn das Wetter war ja nicht allzu schön. Es war heute auch eine große Moralsache, dort mit dabei zu sein. Als Team sind wir relativ gut gefahren. Das erste Mal über den Kemmelberg sind wir gut rübergekommen, haben uns davor nämlich gut positioniert, und bei der letzten Überquerung des Kemmelbergs waren noch Danny und ich vorne. Dann haben wir uns entschieden, dass Danny den Sprint fährt, weil er eindeutig der schnellere Sprinter von uns ist. Mit dem neunten Platz von Danny haben wir eine solide Performance abgeliefert und wir können damit zufrieden sein.“ – Nils Politt

BORA – hansgrohe bringt Aleks Vlasov ohne Probleme ins Ziel der 19. Etappe der Tour de France

Am Papier war die 19. Etappe eine der letzten Chancen für die Sprinter, doch der Wetterbericht prognostizierte Seitenwind, weshalb das gesamte Feld heute vor dem Start extrem nervös war. Zwar spielten am Ende Windstaffeln keine Rolle, dennoch war das Rennen extrem schnell. Nils Politt war in einer frühen Spitzengruppe, nachdem das Feld aber schnell reagierte, ließ sich Nils nach einigen Kilometern wieder zurückfallen. Am Ende war eine späte Attacke von drei Ausreißern chancenlos, als C. Laporte auf den letzten 1000 m unwiderstehlich vorbeizog und den Sieg holte. BORA – hansgrohe um Aleks Vlasov beendete die Etappe ohne Probleme und Aleks liegt weiter auf dem 7. Rang der Gesamtwertung vor dem morgigen Zeitfahren.

“Der Beginn war hektisch, weil alle mit Seitenwind gerechnet haben. Als das Rennen unter Kontrolle war, war es immer noch sehr schnell, aber weniger stressig. Das Finale war wieder richtig hart, weil einige Fahrer Lücken aufgehen lassen und man immer wieder kämpfen muss, um vorne zu bleiben. Aber es war für mich ein guter Tag, meine Beine waren nicht schlecht.” – Aleksandr Vlasov

“Die Gruppe mit Nils hat heute keinen Sinn gemacht. Als klar war, dass die Sprinter das Rennen kontrollieren und der Abstand immer bei einer Minute war, haben wir irgendwann besprochen, dass es besser ist zu warten. Wir wollten seine Kräfte lieber bei Aleks investieren, denn er hat absolute Priorität. Es war heute wichtig, keine Zeit zu verlieren und ohne Probleme durchzukommen. Das hat gut geklappt und jetzt gilt unser Fokus dem Zeitfahren morgen. Da können wir mit Aleks theoretisch noch Plätze gutmachen.” – Rolf Aldag, sportlicher Leiter

First French stage win… by Jumbo-Visma!
Christophe Laporte avoided the hosting country to be left with no stage win like in the 1926 and 1999 Tour de France as he powered to victory almost 2km before the finishing line of stage 19 in Cahors. He surprised pure sprinters Jasper Philipsen and Alberto Dainese who came second and third. He got the green light from Wout van Aert to go and get the fifth stage victory in this Tour de France, his personal first one at the age of 29 after he transferred from Cofidis to Jumbo-Visma, the Dutch team that keeps dominating the overall classification with Jonas Vingegaard two days before reaching Paris.

MOHORIC, VAN DER HOORN, HONORÉ AND SIMMONS IN THE LEAD
139 riders took the start of stage 19 in Castelnau-Magnoac, the village of rugby player Antoine Dupont, at 13.09. Mikkel Honoré (Quick Step), Quinn Simmons (Trek-Segafredo) and Taco van der Hoorn (Intermarché-Wanty Gobert) rode away at km 4, quickly joined by Matej Mohoric (Bahrain Victorious) and Nils Politt (Bora-Hansgrohe). They got a maximum advantage of 1’30’’ as sprinters’ teams like Lotto-Soudal, Alpecin-Deceuninck, BikeExchange-Jayco and DSM kept them on a leash, riding fast with a three-quarter tailwind. Simmons won the intermediate sprint at Auch (km 38.4) where a tribute was paid to the late Nicolas Portal who was the head sport director of Team Sky. The breakaway group was almost reeled in at Fleurance, km 53. Politt sat up but Honoré relaunched the move and Simmons, Mohoric and Van der Hoorn went with him. Cyril Barthe (B&B Hotels-KTM) escaped from the peloton but failed to bridge the gap by a mere five seconds. The Frenchman got brought back and the advantage of the quartet went up again: 1’ at km 80.

POGACAR ON THE ATTACK!
Philippe Gilbert led the bunch for most of the race for Lotto-Soudal, with other sprinters’ teams like BikeExchange-Hayco, Alpecin-Deceuninck and DSM also involved in the chase. Simmons attacked up the hill to the medieval town of Lauzerte. Mohoric went with him to sprint for the cat. 4 KOM price in a spectacular manner. Simmons continued solo with 48km remaining. He was brought back 13km further. Alexis Gougeard (B&B Hotels-KTM) counter-attacked and the next rider who tried to escape from the peloton after having had a bike change due to a mechanical was no less than… Tadej Pogacar! Wout van Aert reacted quickly. Gougeard was joined in the lead by Fred Wright (Bahrain Victorious) and Jasper Stuyven (Trek-Segafredo) with 32km to go.

VAN AERT PAVES THE WAY FOR LAPORTE
The trio rode into the last 20km with 30’’ lead over the peloton led mostly by TotalEnergies. Lotto-Soudal took over with Brent Van Moer. Stage favourites Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma) and Michael Matthews (BikeExchange-Jayco) pulled the peloton as they were racing for Christophe Laporte and Dylan Groenewegen respectively. Wright sped up but 1.5km before the end, Laporte was the first rider to catch the trio and he put the hammer down. He accelerated a second time 500 meters before the end. He continued his effort till the finishing line at the end of a slightly uphill road to take the first French stage victory of the 109th Tour de France while Pogacar sprinted to fifth place.

Top-10 für Danny van Poppel auf der dritten Etappe von Paris-Nizza

Die dritte Etappe von Paris-Nizza war mit 190,8 Kilometern von Vierzon nach Dun le Palestel der zweitlängste Tagesabschnitt der Rundfahrt. Eine flache erste Hälfte gefolgt von hügeligem Terrain und drei Bergwertungen der dritten Kategorie im zweiten Teil des Tages. Nach einem schweren Finale kam ein reduziertes Peloton in Dun le Palestel an. Den ansteigenden Sprint konnte M. Pedersen für sich entscheiden. Pedersen takes his turn

A demanding day of racing leading to an uphill sprint – stage 3’s characteristics perfectly suited Mads Pedersen (Trek-Segafredo), who sprinted to his second victory of the season and his first in Paris-Nice. The former World Champion dominated Bryan Coquard (Cofidis) and Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma) in Dun-le-Palestel. Stage 4 will bring a different challenge to the riders, with a 13.9km individual time-trial from Domérat to Montluçon, ahead of the mountainous final days that will crown the winner of the 80th edition of Paris-Nice.

A mild weather welcomes the 148 riders taking on stage 3 of Paris-Nice 2022 from Vierzon (1 non-starter: Israel-Premier Tech’s Guillaume Boivin). Three breakaway artists quickly get on the move: Thomas De Gendt (Lotto Soudal), Owain Doull (EF Education-EasyPost) and Alexis Gougeard (B&B Hotels-KTM) break away from the bunch at km 3.

The attackers gain 5′
Jasper Philipsen’s Alpecin-Fenix quickly send Senne Leysen at the front of the bunch to control the gap on the flat first half of the stage. Mads Pedersen’s Trek-Segafredo collaborate as Julien Bernard starts pulling when the gap hits its maximum: 5’10’’ at km 64. Biniam Girmay’s Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert Matériaux also put a put rider at the front of the peloton as the attackers enter the last 80km with a lead of 4 minutes.
De Gendt makes sure he goes first atop the first two categorised ascents of the day to defend the polka dot jersey conquered on day 1 by his Lotto Soudal teammate Matthew Holmes. Meanwhile, tension increases in the peloton as many teams try to position their leaders towards the front on a rolling terrain.

Tension on the ascents
The gap is down to 1’45’’ when the bunch cross the line for the first time (43.9km to go). Riders from Ineos Grenadiers, Bahrain Victorious and Team DSM – with a short-lived attack by Soren Kragh Andersen – maintain a hard pace on the way to the last categorised climb of the day, Côte de Le Peyroux (2.8km, 5.2%), to be summited with 22.6km to go.
After a flurry of attacks, Mathieu Burgaudeau (TotalEnergies) is the only attacker slightly detached from the bunch over the top. Sprinters such as Fabio Jakobsen (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl Team), Sam Bennett (Bora-Hansgrohe), Dylan Groenewegen (BikeExchange-Jayco) and Niccolò Bonifazio (TotalEnergies) are already dropped.

Stuyven sets Pedersen for victory
Burgaudeau is caught on the following downhill. The Yellow Jersey Christophe Laporte takes the reins for Jumbo-Visma with 17km to go. Mike Teunissen (Jumbo-Visma) returns to drive the bunch into the last 10km alongside riders from Oliver Naesen’s AG2R Citroën and Ivan Garcia Cortina’s Movistar.
Kragh attacks again with 8km to go, but Garcia Cortina’s teammates reel him in 5.5km away from the line. AG2R Citroën drives the bunch into the last kilometre but Jasper Stuyven launches his Trek-Segafredo companion Mads Pedersen to victory, ahead of Bryan Coquard (Cofidis) and Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma). Christophe Laporte goes down with Kevin Geniets in the sprint, but they both get back on their bikes and the Frenchman retains the Yellow Jersey on the eve of the TT.

Aleksandr Vlasov rückt bei Paris-Nizza Windchaos in der Gesamtwertung weiter auf

Die zweite Etappe von Paris-Nizza führte die Profis heute über flache 159,2 Kilometer von Auffargis nach Orléans. Mit viel Seitenwind und immer wieder daraus resultierenden Windstaffeln ein enorm anspruchsvoller und stressiger Tag. BORA – hansgrohe schaffte mit Sam Bennett, Aleksandr Vlasov und Ryan Mullen den Sprung in die erste Gruppe. Im finalen Sprint war F. Jakobsen am schnellsten und holte sich den Sieg. In der Gesamtwertung konnte sich Aleksandr Vlasov auf den zehnten Rang verbessern.

„Gestern war es schon hart, heute war es nochmal härter. Der Seitenwind und die Windstaffel haben das Feld immer wieder zerrissen und wir mussten richtig arbeiten, um in der ersten Gruppe zu bleiben. Zwei mal konnte ich die Lücke wieder schließen und schaffte es so ohne Zeitverlust über die Ziellinie. Jakobsen takes revenge through the wind

Fabio Jakobsen (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl Team) took victory in Orléans, after an eventful stage 2 of Paris-Nice 2022. The first attacks of the day led to an intense battle through the wind as Jumbo-Visma tried to hurt their rivals again, on the day after their collective show of strength in Mantes-la-Ville. Monday’s fights finished with many victims: the two-time winner of Paris-Nice Maximilian Schachmann (Bora-Hansgrohe), Brandon McNulty (UAE Team Emirates) and Guillaume Martin (Cofidis) all lost 1’29’’ on the line, David Gaudu (Groupama-FDJ) dropped 9 minutes. But this time, Jakobsen sprinted to the win ahead of two riders from the Dutch squad, Wout van Aert and Christophe Laporte, who retained the yellow jersey. Stage 3 will take the riders through more tricky challenges with a hilly course towards Dun-Le-Palestel on the eve of the time-trial.

The peloton leave Auffargis with 151 riders and two non-starters: Sonny Colbrelli (Bahrain Victorious) and Rudy Barbier (Israel-Premier Tech), who both struggled on stage 1. With the polka dot jersey on his shoulders, Matthew Holmes (Lotto Soudal) is eager to bring battle on the early climbs of the day. The British baroudeur is the first attacker of the day. He’s quickly followed by Alexis Gougeard (B&B Hotels-KTM), a threatening rival for the KOM standings, and another rider from Lotto Soudal, Philippe Gilbert.

Early skirmishes
Holmes leads the way to the top of the cat-3 ascents of the Côte des 17 tournants (km 9.6) and Côte de Choisel (km 18) to tighten his grip on the polka dots. Meanwhile, Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma) is caught up in an early crash. The Belgian champion changes his bike and returns to the bunch after some 10km of chase behind a peloton led by Trek-Segafredo, already trying to turn the race upside down on exposed roads.
Calm returns in the bunch and the attackers bring their lead up to 6’ as they travel through the plains of Beauce. The maximum gap is reached at km 65 (6’10’’). Then, the race explodes as the riders face new open roads exposed to crosswinds from the East.

High speeds and tension
Tension and the pace seriously increase. The peloton splits in three parts with some 85km to go while riders hit the deck. Nils Eekhoff (Team DSM) is forced to abandon. David Gaudu (Groupama-FDJ) and Matteo Trentin (UAE Team Emirates) are caught behind.
Following their show of strength form day 1, Jumbo-Visma are among the most involved to split the bunch. Ineos Grenadiers and Trek-Segafredo also appear willing to hurt their rivals. Nairo Quintana (Arkéa-Samsic) and Stefan Küng (Groupama-FDJ) also take turns. The battle goes on for more than 30km, with more riders dropped due to crashes (Girmay, McNulty, Almeida…) or mechanicals (G. Martin, riding alongside the defending champion Schachmann).

Crosswinds, crosswinds and more crosswinds!
The early attackers are caught with 63km to go by a very reduced bunch, and more splits occur. Simon Yates (BikeExchange-Jayco), Sam Bennett (Bora-Hansgrohe) and Bryan Coquard (Cofidis) are among the riders dropped at that moment. They return to a 30-man front group 43km away from the finish line.
The pace drops a bit, allowing the chasers to get closer ahead of the final 20km. The second bunch, mostly led by Movistar for Garcia Cortina and Jorgenson, trail by 25’’, while the gap to Schachmann and Martin drops down to 1’10’’ after it went over two minutes during the stage.

Final attacks

Stefan Bissegger (EF Education EasyPost) launches a new attack with 14km to go, but the yellow jersey Christophe Laporte reacts and everyone follow. The Swiss powerhouse goes again with 5km to go. He manages to open a gap of 5’’ but Fabio Jakobsen still had three teammates to reel in Bissegger with 1km to go.
Laporte surged to the front with Van Aert right on his wheel inside the final kilometre. But Jakobsen’s speed granted him victory in front of the two Jumbo-Visma riders. Laporte still retains the yellow jersey and Roglic has won more time on rivals such as Martin, Schachmann, McNulty, Almeida, Gaudu…
