Ausreißergruppe gewinnt 5. Etappe der Spanien-Rundfahrt, während Sam Bennett weiterhin in Grün bleibt

Bei einem weiteren Tag im Baskenland standen auf der heutigen Etappe zwischen Irún und Bilbao fünf kurze aber zum Teil recht giftige Anstiege auf dem Programm, wobei der zweimal zu befahrende Alto del Vivero nur 14 km vor dem Ziel zum letzten Mal zu bewältigen war. Erst nach 75 km gelang es einer großen Gruppe sich vom Feld abzusetzen und das von Jumbo – Visma und BORA – hansgrohe angeführte Feld zeigte kein großes Interesse die Spitze wieder einzuholen. So konnte M. Soler nach einer Attacke aus der Ausreißergruppe am letzten Anstieg den Tagessieg holen. Die Gruppe der Favoriten mit Jai Hindley, Sergio Higuita und Wilco Kelderman erreichte das Ziel rund fünf Minuten später. Sam Bennett behält nach der heutigen Etappe das grüne Trikot.

„Nachdem wir gestern sehr offensiv gefahren sind, war heute unsere Zielsetzung Sam gut ins Ziel zu bringen und auch sicherzustellen, dass unsere Fahrer für das Gesamtklassement keine Zeit gegenüber der Konkurrenz verlieren. Soler shines in Bilbao

Marc Soler (UAE Team Emirates) won stage 5 of La Vuelta 22 after an impressive performance on the hills of the Basque Country. The Spaniard was a late addition to the massive breakaway that covered the stage at a furious pace. He eventually went solo on the final ascent of the Alto del Vivero and took victory in Bilbao, emulating Igor Anton’s success on the same roads 11 years ago. This is Soler’s 2nd stage win in La Vuelta. Right behind him, Rudy Molard (Groupama-FDJ) took La Roja, only 2 seconds ahead of Fred Wright (Bahrain Victorious), 3rd of the stage. The Frenchman had already taken the leader’s red jersey after stage 5 of La Vuelta 18. He held it for four days.
La Vuelta 22 stays in Basque Country with stage 5, a hilly 187.2km challenge from Irun to Bilbao featuring 5 categorised ascents on iconic roads that have witnessed great moments of cycling. Such terrain inspires the attackers, so much that it takes some 80km of battles at almost 50km/h for the break to get away!

Wright, Molard, Masnada… and then Soler
From km 74, 17 riders successively and successfully make the break: Vadim Pronskiy (Astana Qazaqstan), Fred Wright (Bahrain Victorious), Jonathan Caicedo (EF Education-EasyPost), Rudy Molard, Jake Stewart (Groupama-FDJ), Julius Johansen (Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert Matériaux), Alessandro De Marchi, Daryl Impey (Israel Premier Tech), Kamil Malecki (Lotto Soudal), Gregor Mühlberger (Movistar Team), Fausto Masnada (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl Team), Lawson Craddock (Team BikeExchange-Jayco), Nikias Arndt (Team DSM), Victor Langellotti (Burgos-BH), Roger Adria (Kern Pharma), Ibai Azurmendi (Euskaltel-Euskadi) and Anthony Delaplace (Arkea-Samsic).
As they face the first ascent of the day, the cat-3 Puerto de Gontzagarigana (summit at km 95.6), the gap is up to 2 minutes. Rudy Molard is the virtual leader as he only trailed by 58’’ on GC at the start of the day. Marc Soler (UAE Team Emirates) attacks from the bunch and he bridges the gap on the second ascent of the day, up Balcon de Bizkaia (km 102.4). At the summit, Langellotti goes first over the top, as he did in the previous ascent.

Langellotti also chases the points on the Alto de Morga (km 125.4). Meanwhile, Jumbo-Visma control the bunch with a gap of around 5 minutes. Craddock attacks on the first ascent of the cat-2 Alto del Vivero (km 144). Langellotti bridges the gap at the summit (and all but secures the polka-dot jersey at the end of the day). Ten more riders join them to battle it out for the stage win: Impey, Molard, Stewart, Pronskiy, Soler, Adria, Muhlberger, Masnada, Arndt and Wright.
After a first passage through Bilbao, Stewart attacks ahead of the final ascent of the Alto del Vivero (km 173). He opens a gap of 40’’ but Soler catches him 1km away from the summit. On the downhill, the Spaniard tries to resist a group of five chasers: Wright, Molard, Pronskiy, Craddock and Langellotti.
Five more chasers return in the final 5km: Muhlberger, Arndt, Adria, Impey and Masnada. But they finish 4’’ behind Soler. Impey sprints to 2nd and Wright finishes 3rd, taking 4 bonus seconds, making him Molard’s runner-up in the overall standings with a gap of 2’’.

Wilco Kelderman und Jai Hindley in den Top-10 auf der 4. Etappe der Vuelta, Sam Bennett behält Grün

Nach dem flachen Auftaktwochenende in den Niederlanden und dem gestrigen Ruhetag ging es heute im Baskenland mit der Vuelta weiter. 152,5 km zwischen Vitoria Gasteiz und Laguardia und es wurde ein Finale für die Puncheure im Feld erwartet. Nach fast 120 gefahrenen Kilometern sicherte sich Sam Bennett, der aktuell Führende in der Punktewertung bei der einzigen Sprintwertung der heutigen Etappe 10 Punkte, ehe das recht anspruchsvolle Finale eingeläutet wurde. Schon im vorletzten Anstieg dünnte sich das Peloton aus, bevor es zum Schlagabtausch in der steilen Schlusssteigung kam. Beim Sieg von P. Roglič holte Wilco Kelderman und Jai Hindley den 9. bzw. 10. Platz. Ab Platz 13 gab es eine Lücke von sieben Sekunden, wodurch mehrere GC Favoriten Zeit verloren. Sam Bennett verteidigte seine Führung in der Punktewertung und wird auch morgen das grüne Trikot tragen.

„Der erste Tag in Spanien war heiß und schnell. Jonas und Ryan legten ein solides Tempo vor, um die Ausreißergruppe zu kontrollieren, damit wir um den Bonussprint für Sam kämpfen konnten. Danach konzentrierten wir uns auf den finalen Bergaufsprint. Leider war Sergio heute nicht in Bestform, denn normalerweise liegt ihm so ein Finale sehr gut. Auf der Zielgeraden habe ich versucht, Wilco so gut wie möglich zu helfen und am Ende waren wir beide in der Top 10.“ – Jai Hindley
„Unser Plan war, Punkte für Sam beim Zwischensprint zu holen. Leider haben uns ein paar Meter gefehlt, um die volle Punktzahl einzusammeln. Trotzdem hat Sam dennoch Punkte geholt, die am Ende wichtig in der Endabrechnung sein können. Dann war unser zweites Ziel, die drei Klassementfahrer sicher ins Ziel zu bringen. Mit Platz neun und zehn können wir absolut zufrieden sein, zumal es hinter Jai und Wilco schon eine kleine Lücke gab. Wir bleiben weiterhin auch im grünen Trikot, was wir so gehofft hatten, und werden nach weiteren Möglichkeiten suchen das Trikot zu verteidigen.“ – Jens Zemke, Sportlicher Leiter

Roglic, the Spanish master

As soon as La Vuelta hit the first Spanish climbs of the 2022 edition, Primoz Roglic rose to glory. The Slovenian star dominated the uphill sprint at the end of stage 4 in Laguardia, on Tuesday, to take his 10th stage win in the Spanish Grand Tour ahead of Mads Pedersen (Trek-Segafredo) and Enric Mas (Movistar). He also is the fourth rider from Jumbo-Visma to take La Roja in La Vuelta 22, after Robert Gesink, Mike Teunissen and Edoardo Affini. More climbing challenges await the peloton as they head to Bilbao on day 5.
On the day after the transfer from the Netherlands to the Basque country, 180 riders start from Vitoria-Gasteiz, facing a hilly 152.5km course towards the uphill finish in Laguardia. The return to Spain and such terrain inspire many attackers.

Bora-Hansgrohe and Jumbo-Visma control the day
After 5km, Alexey Lutsenko (Astana Qazaqstan) and Alessandro De Marchi (Israel Premier Tech) are the first riders to open a gap. Several chasers launch counter-attacks, until four more riders make the break: James Shaw (EF Education-EasyPost), Ander Okamika (Burgos-BH), Jarrad Drizners (Lotto Soudal) and Joan Bou (Euskaltel-Euskadi)
The gap is up to 2’ when Bora-Hansgrohe and Jumbo-Visma start driving the bunch, 15km into the stage. The attackers push their lead to a maximum of 3’15’’ atop the first climb of the day, the cat-2 ascent of Puerto de Opakua (km 61.9). Joan Bou goes first over the top and takes the lead of the KOM standings.

Affini works for Roglic
With a very strong pace on a rolling terrain, riders struggle at the front of the race and in the bunch. Ander Okamika is dropped from the breakaway with 73km to go. Jarrad Drizners and Joan Bou suffer the same fate 20km further. The gap to the bunch is already down to under 1 minute.
Alexey Lutsenko, James Shaw and Alessandro De Marchi are eventually reeled in 35km away from the line. The battle for the front positions of the bunch is on ahead of the cat-3 ascent of the Puerto de Herrera (km 138).
With La Roja on his shoulders, Edoardo Affini (Jumbo-Visma) drives the bunch at a high speed towards the climb. He is quickly dropped as they hit the first slopes.

Roglic, naturally
Trek-Segafredo and Jumbo-Visma set the pace on the climb. Julian Alaphilippe (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl) accelerates towards the summit and Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) is quick to react and to take the 3 bonus seconds at the summit.
Riders from Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl and Vincenzo Nibali (Astana Qazaqstan) try to make the most of the downhill towards Laguardia but it all comes down to the final uphill kilometre, where Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) sprints to victory ahead of Mads Pedersen (Trek-Segafredo). He also takes his 37th red leader’s jersey in the Spanish Grand Tour.

Sam Bennett zum zweiten Mal in Folge erfolgreich bei der Vuelta

Die letzte Etappe in den Niederlanden war wieder eine Angelegenheit für die schnellen Männer, die auf einem Rundkurs um Breda das Rennen auf der mit 193,5 km zugleich längsten Etappe der diesjährigen Vuelta für sich entschieden. Sam Bennett trat heute im grünen Punktetrikot an den Start and hoffte erneut einen Tagessieg einfahren zu können. Nachdem das Team Sam den ganzen Tag vorbildlich unterstützt hatte, setzte Danny van Poppel seinen Teamkollegen am Ende perfekt für den Massensprint ab. Der Niederländer hatte Sam auf der linken Straßenseite am sprintenden Feld vorbeigeführt, so dass dieser selbst seinen Sprint antreten und als Erster über den Zielstrich jagen konnte. Er holte damit seinen zweiten Sieg in Folge und baute seine Führung in der Punktewertung weiter aus. Nach der heutigen Etappe folgt ein Transfer ins Baskenland und zu einem Ruhetag, bevor das Peloton die erste hügelige Etappe der Spanien-Rundfahrt am Dienstag bestreiten wird.

„Ich freue mich sehr über meinen zweiten Etappensieg und muss mich herzlich bei meinen Teamkollegen bedanken. Sie waren einfach super. Jonas ist den ganzen Tag vorne im Wind gefahren und hatte am Ende sogar immer noch die Kraft, einen großen Lead-Out zu fahren. Danach hielt Ryan uns vorne, er hat so viel Wind weggenommen, und dann kam der Masterclass-Lead-Out von Danny. Es war richtig perfekte Teamarbeit. Ehrlich gesagt war es heute nicht so leicht, denn viele Fahrer haben um unser Rad gekämpft, aber es gelang mir, Dannys Rad zu halten und meinen Sprint rechtzeitig zu lancieren. Wir haben heute auch unsere Führung in der Punktewertung ausgebaut. Mehr kann ich mir nicht wünschen.“ – Sam Bennett

„Es war ein hektischer Tag, sehr anstrengend für das Peloton. Also wirklich: Achtung, fertig, los. Unser Ziel heute war ein zweiter Etappensieg sowie Grün zu verteidigen. Wir wollten das Rennen einfach unter Kontrolle halten und den anderen Teams zeigen, dass wir hier um den Etappensieg fahren können. Allerdings investieren wir auch nicht alles, im Hinblick auf das Gesamtklassement, denn es folgen noch fast drei Wochen. Deshalb war das Hauptaugenmerk heute sicher durchzukommen. Die Jungs haben da eine wirklich unglaubliche Arbeit geleistet und wir können mit dem Auftaktwochenende sehr zufrieden sein. Wir bedanken uns auch nochmal bei der Organisation hier in Holland und vor allem bei den holländischen Fans, denn es gab die letzten drei Tage fast eine Tour de France Stimmung hier – Chapeau!“ – Bernhard Eisel, Sportlicher Leiter

Bennett immediately doubles up

Sam Bennett (Bora-Hansgrohe) is on a roll! On the day after his win in Utrecht, his first Grand Tour success in two years, the Irishman sprinted to another victory in Breda at the end of stage 3 of La Vuelta 22. He dominated Mads Pedersen (Trek-Segafredo) and Dan McLay (Arkea-Samsic) to take his 10th Grand Tour stage win, the 5th in La Vuelta. Never had he claimed two stage wins in a row in three-week events. The final stage in the Netherlands also saw a third rider from Jumbo-Visma take La Roja: Edoardo Affini, after Robert Gesink and Mike Teunissen. The race will resume on Tuesday, in Basque country.
The peloton set off from Breda for a 193.2km loop around the Dutch city with 181 riders. Spanish and Dutch baroudeurs lead the first breakaway attempts until Belgium’s Thomas De Gendt (Lotto Soudal) launches a successful attack at km 4. He is joined at the front by Julius van den Berg (EF Education-EasyPost), wearing the polka-dot jersey on his Dutch roads, as well as Jose Herrada (Cofidis), Jan Bakelants (Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert Matériaux), Ander Okamika (Burgos-BH), Pau Miquel (Kern Pharma) and Mikel Iturria (Euskaltel-Euskadi).

Woods crashes and abandons
They rapidly open a gap of 3 minutes but sprint teams are also quick to react. Sam Bennett’s Bora-Hansgrohe, Mads Pedersen’s Trek-Segafredo and Tim Merlier’s Alpecin-Deceuninck are the most involved to drive the chase. The attackers fly through the wind, maintaining an average speed of 45km/h in the first two hours. But the gap is down to 2 minutes as they enter the last 100km.
In the bunch, Michael Woods (Israel-Premier Tech) suffers a crash with his teammate Itamar Einhorn. The Canadian climber, a 2-time stage winner in La Vuelta, is forced to give up on his GC ambitions as he has to abandon the race.

Van den Berg defends the polka dots
The tension increases in the bunch and the gap drops down to 1’ ahead of the climb of the day, Rijzendeweg (km 133.8). Thomas De Gendt comes first at the summit, ahead of Julius van den Berg, who successfully defends his leadership in the KOM standings before leaving the Netherlands to go to the Basque country.
De Gendt also dominates the intermediate sprint (km 170.6) and then drops back to the bunch. Richard Carapaz (Ineos Grenadiers) is involved in an incident with 19km to go, but he quickly gets back to the bunch with Pavel Sivakov and Tao Geoghegan Hart.

Bennett, unleashed
The break is eventually reeled in with 11km to go. And the battle for the front positions of the bunch is full on both for the sprinters and the GC leaders.
Alpecin-Deceuninck and UAE Team Emirates try to set Tim Merlier and Pascal Ackermann for the win. But Bora-Hansgrohe surge to the front inside the final 500m and Sam Bennett sprints to his second stage win in a row.

Die letzte Grand Tour des Jahres begann mit einem 23,3 km langen flachen aber technisch anspruchsvollen Mannschaftszeitfahren im niederländischen Utrecht. Da es Zeitabstände geben konnte, setzte BORA – hansgrohe alles daran, die Formation gut beizubehalten und ein schnelles Rennen im gemeinschaftlichen Kampf gegen die Uhr abzuliefern. Die Equipe aus Raubling verließ als achtletztes Team das Starthaus. Bei der ersten Zwischenzeitmessung zeigte die Uhr 12:19 Minuten für das Team an und das Team konnte im zweiten Streckenteil gut zusammenbleiben und belegte im Ziel mit einer Zeit von 25:21 Minuten den siebten Platz, 41 Sekunden hinter dem Tagessieger Jumbo-Visma.

„Wir können mit dem heutigen Tag definitiv zufrieden sein. Die Jungs sind super gefahren, vor allem auch den ersten technischen Teil der Strecke. Sie haben wirklich alles gegeben. Vielleicht hat uns ein bisschen die Horsepower gefehlt im Vergleich zu den großen Mannschaften im Teamzeitfahren. Aber insgesamt müssen wir sagen, Jumbo-Visma, Ineos Grenadiers und Quickstep waren richtig stark, vor allem Jumbo. Dahinter ist es ziemlich ausgeglichen. Im Hinblick auf drei Wochen Vuelta España sind wir auf einem guten Weg. Wir haben noch ein paar Tausend Kilometer vor uns, und da kann noch einiges passieren. Die Jungs waren sehr zufrieden und für die Stimmung im Team ist es wichtig, dass sie zufrieden vom Rad steigen und dann motiviert morgen in die nächste Etappe gehen.“ – Bernhard Eisel, Sportlicher Leiter

Jumbo-Visma gift Gesink with La Roja

Robert Gesink is the first leader of La Vuelta 22 as Jumbo-Visma dominated the opening team time-trial, a 23.3km challenge covered in 24’40’’ in the streets of Utrecht. On home soil, the Dutch squad was 13’’ faster than Ineos Grenadiers and 14’’ faster than Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl to already put Primoz Roglic in prime position in his bid for a historic fourth consecutive victory in the Spanish Grand Tour. But first, Gesink takes La Roja in his 9th participation. He will enjoy it in the Netherlands as stage 2 runs from ’s-Hertogenbosch to Utrecht.
Burgos-BH were the first riders to set off at 18:30, with menacing clouds covering the sky of Utrecht, with a few wet spots on the road. And the Spanish squad naturally sets the first reference, in 26’38’’. Unfortunately, they could only start with 7 riders as Manuel Peñalver returned a late positive test to Covid-19.

BikeExchange set the early reference
Michael Woods and Chris Froome’s Israel Premier Tech are the third team to finish, with a strong time (25’44’’)… Not enough to hold off Groupama-FDJ, whose time of 25’18’’ is then beaten by Simon Yates’ BikeExchange-Jayco, flying over the 23.3km at 55.5km/h to set a time of 25’11’’.
The situation then settles until Bora-Hansgrohe set off with the winner of the Giro, Jai Hindley. At the intermediate point (km 11), they are 2’’ ahead of Team BikeExchange-Jayco. But they trail by 10’’ as they cross the line.

Jumbo-Visma fly on home soil
The intensity rises as we get closer to the last starts, with Ineos Grenadiers (Richard Carapaz), Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl (Remco Evenepoel, Julian Alaphilippe), Movistar (Alejandro Valverde, Enric Mas) and Jumbo-Visma, led by the defending champion Primoz Roglic and the TT expert Rohan Dennis.

Ineos Grenadiers are the first team to go under 25 minutes, with a time of 24’53’’. Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl only rail by 0.77’’ on the line… But Jumbo-Visma smash the best time in 24’40’’. Gesink is the first across the line to take La Roja in his ninth participation in La Vuelta.

THE 77TH EDITION OF LA VUELTA WILL TAKE PLACE FROM THE 19TH OF AUGUST TO THE 11TH OF SEPTEMBER 2022, WITH AN OFFICIAL DEPARTURE FROM THE NETHERLANDS

La Vuelta 22 will take off on the 19th of August with a team time trial through the streets of the Dutch city of Utrecht. The second stage will be held on the 20th of August between ‘s-Hertogenbosch and Utrecht. On Sunday the 21st of August, the peloton will continue to ride through the North Brabant Region in a circuit stage, both commencing and concluding at Breda. The team presentation will take place on Thursday the 18th of August in the centre of Utrecht. This act will inaugurate Holland’s official La Vuelta departure.

La Vuelta 22 will pass through 34 Dutch municipalities over three stages. The local organising committee, led by the cities of Utrecht, Breda and ‘s-Hertogenbosch and the provinces of Utrecht and North Brabant, is made up of a group of public institutions led by Sharon Dijksma, Mayor of Utrecht. “We have finally an official date. We were looking forward to get back on track with La Vuelta Holanda’s project and now we can’t wait to get back to work. We’re putting together a wonderful program for residents and businesses as well as for all our international guests. Our aim is to further reinforce the special link that already exists between Spain and the Netherlands”.

This vision is shared by Javier Guillén, General Manager of La Vuelta: “We’re establishing new dates for a project with almost 6 years of work behind it. These extra months of waiting haven’t reduced one bit our eagerness to work together, nor the enthusiasm and ambition we have put into organising this official departure from the very first day. This departure will go down in history, marking an important milestone for both Spanish and Dutch cycling.”.

A VAST ACTIVITY PROGRAM

The activity program connected with the official departure of La Vuelta from Holland will commence much earlier. The events that have been designed to entertain the regions and cities visited by the race will begin several months before it takes off, making the La Vuelta Holanda project a concept that goes far beyond just the three days during which it will host the stages. The organising committee has woven a contact network featuring sports clubs, schools, cultural institutions and local entrepreneurs in order to build a vast idea and activity program revolving around cycling, a healthy urban lifestyle and sustainability.
The official departure of La Vuelta from Holland also coincides with a very special occasion for the city of Utrecht, which celebrates 900 years since it was officially recognised as a city.

Felix Großschartner beendet Vuelta a España auf Platz 10 in der Gesamtwertung

Die Schlussetappe der dreiwöchigen Rundfahrt durch Spanien endete nicht wie gewohnt in Madrid, sondern mit einem 33,8 km langen Einzelzeitfahren auf einer welligen Strecke zwischen Padrrón und Santiago de Compostela. Für Felix Großschartner, der seine Kampfstärke während der Rundfahrt mehrfach unter Beweis stellte, und heute als Gesamtzehnter von der Startrampe rollte, ging es darum seinen 10. Platz zu verteidigen. Der Österreicher lag nur 16 Sekunden vor seinem nächsten Kontrahenten, konnte aber am Ende, beim Tagessieg von P. Roglič, den 7. Rang belegen und damit seinen 10. Platz in der Gesatwertung behaupten. BORA – hansgrohe verließ die Vuelta mit einem 2. Platz auf der 16. Etappe durch Sprinter Jordi Meeus und dem 10. Platz in der GC von Felix.

„Das waren drei lehrreiche Wochen. Es war das zweite Mal, dass ich bei einer Grand Tour auf die Gesamtwertung gefahren bin. Meine letzten Rennen waren der Giro und dann die Sardinien Rundfahrt und obwohl ich gut trainiert habe, konnte ich meine Leistungsfähigkeit doch nicht so richtig einschätzen. Es gab eben mal gute und auch mal nicht so gute Tage hier, aber ich bin zufrieden damit, dass ich immer darauf fokussiert war mein Bestes zu geben und nicht aufzugeben. Wenn ich mal einen etwas schlechteren Tag hatte, habe ich mich immer wieder zurückgekämpft und eben das Beste daraus gemacht. Am Ende ist dies auch belohnt worden und ich kann mit dem Ergebnis echt zufrieden sein. Wichtig ist doch die klaren Fehler, die zwischendurch passiert sind zu analysieren und sie als Erfahrung mitzunehmen, so dass man bei den nächsten Rennen davon profitiert. Ich freue mich also jetzt auf die nächsten Rennen in Italien und hoffe dort auf einen guten Abschluss. Drei Wochen sind echt lange und wenn es auch zwischendurch mal nicht so läuft, wie auf der 17. Etappe, wo ich vor dem letzten Anstieg gestürzt bin, dann habe ich mich trotzdem zurückgekämpft. Wenn man also einen Einbruch erlebt und aus der Top 10 rausrutscht, das ist nicht so einfach, aber man muss eben immer sein Bestes geben. Unverhofftes kann immer passieren und auch an den letzten Tagen kann sich noch einiges ändern und man muss darauf vorbereitet sein. Meinen Dank an das ganze Team, denn jeder hat sein Bestes gegeben. Es war für jeden hart, nicht nur vom Streckenprofil her aber auch die Hitze und der Stress machte einem zu schaffen. Wir hatten auch einige Stürze im Team gehabt, aber jeder hat doch versucht weiter zu kämpfen. Also vielen Dank an alle, jeder hat an mich geglaubt und mich unterstützt und wenn es auch manchmal schwer war, hatten wir trotz allem eine gute Zeit zusammen.“ – Felix Großschartner

„Es war eine Achterbahnfahrt von Höhen und Tiefen. Wir hatten eine sehr ernüchternde Leistung auf der dritten Etappe an dem Picon Blanco, wo Felix nur den 35. Platz belegte und sich schon viel Zeit eingefahren hatte, und an der drittletzten Etappe zum Alto del Gamoniteiro sind wir aus den Top 10 rausgefallen. Aber wir haben auch extrem starke Leistungen gesehen, als wir auf einer Etappe nur 8 Sekunden am Führungstrikot vorbeigeschrammt sind. Von daher gehen wir mit einem guten Gefühl mit dem 10. Platz in der Gesamtwertung aus der Vuelta. Das war auch die Zielsetzung, die Top 10 vom letzten Jahr zu bestätigen. Für das Team, mit dem wir hier angetreten sind, ist das eine sehr respektable Leistung, denn drei unserer Fahrer sind noch nie eine Grand Tour gefahren. Wir waren hier mit einem ganz jungen Team, einem Team ohne viel Vuelta-Erfahrung. Der Etappensieg war auch greifbar nahe, mit dem zweiten Platz von Jordi Meeus beim Sprint. Das war die Zielsetzung, eine Etappe gewinnen, was wir knapp verpasst haben und eine Top 10 Platzierung in der Gesamtwertung, was wir erreicht haben. Es ist nicht immer einfach mit einem Team von Rookies Felix auf dem höchsten Niveau zu unterstützen, aber die Jungs haben das gut gemacht und jeder hat sein Bestes gegeben. Der Ausfall von Maximilian Schachmann hat uns schwer getroffen. Er ist ein Fahrer mit dem wir, wenn er in guter Form ist, sicherlich auch in Spitzengruppen besser vertreten gewesen wären, und auch eine große Chance auf einen Etappensieg gehabt hätten. Roglic triumphs at the end of the Camino

Three weeks after he won the opening time trial of La Vuelta 21, in front of the cathedral of Burgos, Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) dominated the final one with a finish next to the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela. The Slovenian made four stage wins in this edition of the Spanish Grand Tour to claim his third overall victory in a row in dominant fashion. His margin of 4’42’’ on Enric Mas (Movistar Team) is the biggest between the winner of La Vuelta and the second rider overall since 1997. Jack Haig (Bahrain Victorious) joins Roglic and Mas on the overall podium after 3.417km of battle through Spain.
Josef Cerny (Deceuninck-Quick Step) is the first rider on the road, at 17:02. He’s also the first at the finish in front of the cathedral, with a time of 45’18’’, and he sits on the hot seat for more than an hour before Magnus Cort Nielsen (EF Education Nippo), freshly crowned as the most combative rider of La Vuelta 21, shows he still has something in his tank after his three spectacular stage wins: 44’16’’ (45.813km/h).

Thymen Arensman (Team DSM) takes a spot between Cort Nielsen and Cerny, with a time of 44’54’’ 8+38’’). The top of the standings don’t change until the leaders start their effort. Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) is on his way to Santiago de Compostela at 19:43, a few minutes after Fabio Aru (Team Qhubeka NextHash) bids farewell to pro cycling. “I want to thank everyone in La Vuelta and the fans around the world”, the Italian winner of the 2015 editions says.

Primoz Roglic flies to the first intermediate (km 13), already putting 19’’ between him and Cort Nielsen and 1’08’’ to Enric Mas (Movistar Team). Adam Yates (Ineos Grenadiers) already gains 26’’ on Jack Haig (Bahrain Victorious) in the battle for the third place on the podium. The Brit needs to gain 1’ to edge the Aussie.
After such a strong start, Roglic powers to victory 14’’ ahead of Cort Nielsen. He even goes past Mas in the final hectometres to seal his overall triumph with a historical margin of 4’42’’. Haig eventually finishes 26’’ faster than Yates to be the second Australian rider on the podium of La Vuelta, 12 years after Cadel Evans.

Felix Großschartner schiebt sich wieder in die Top-10 nach der vorletzten Etappe der Vuelta a España

Heute ging es durch den bergigen Westen Galiziens nahe der portugiesischen Grenze. Die Strecke, begann ziemlich leicht bevor es in der zweiten Rennhälfte in rascher Folge über fünf kurze aber harte Anstiege ging. Für die Klassementfahrer bot sich hier eine letzte Chance vor dem bevorstehen Einzelzeitfahren noch einmal an Boden gegenüber ihren Konkurrenten zu gewinnen. Das Feld ließ eine 16-Mann Ausreißergruppe früh entkommen und da keines der Teams ernsthaft die Nachführarbeit übernehmen wollte, dehnte sich der Vorsprung auf mehr als 11 Minuten aus. Ungefähr 55 km vor dem Ziel attackierte A. Yates, gefolgt von mehreren anderen GC-Fahrern. Felix Großschartner war einer stark besetzten Gruppe, aus der nun ständig attackiert wurde und sich letztlich die Hälfte der Top Ten der Gesamtwertung lösen konnten. Danach war das Tempo in der Verfolgergruppe raus und beim Sieg von C. Champoussin aus der Ausreißergruppe überquerte Felix die Ziellinie auf dem 17. Platz. Damit verbessert er sich um zwei Plätze auf den 10. Rang in der Gesamtwertung.

„Es war ein super harter Tag, aber ich habe mich heute wesentlich besser gefühlt seit meinem Sturz auf der 17. Etappe. Es war ein äußerst chaotischer Tag was das GC betrifft und ich bin froh, wieder in den Top-10 zu sein. Morgen ist das Einzelzeitfahren und ich hoffe, dass ich da gute Beine haben werde, um meine Top-10 Platzierung zu verteidigen.“ – Felix Großschartner
„Diese schwere Bergetappe der Vuelta war nichts für schwache Nerven. Wir wollten natürlich mit Felix versuchen zurück in die Top 10 zu fahren und uns kämpferisch zeigen. Heute versuchten wir zuerst in die Fluchtgruppe zu gehen, um da vielleicht noch Zeit gutzumachen. Aber das hat nicht geklappt, was aber nicht zu schlimm war. 16 Fahrer sind weggefahren und wir haben uns auf das Finale mit den schweren Bergen konzentriert. Am drittletzten Berg war eigentlich klar, dass jetzt die Favoriten das Rennen nochmal richtig eröffnen würden. Felix hatte einen guten Tag und konnte mitfahren, war zwischenzeitlich auch schon mal virtuell in den Top 10 weil Martin und Kuss schon über eine Minute abgehängt waren. Leider hat es sich taktisch aber so entwickelt, dass vorne 5 Favoriten weitergefahren sind und die anderen Favoriten um Lopez nicht mitmachten. Dadurch sind mehrere Fahrer wieder zurückgekommen. Letztendlich konnte Felix aber im Schlussanstieg Eiking noch Zeit abnehmen und ist damit zurück in die Top 10. Also schon ein guter Tag nach den Rückschlägen, die wir hatten. Champoussin triumphs in a crazy final mountain stage

Clément Champoussin (AG2R-Citroën Team) took his first pro win on Saturday, atop the climb of Castro de Herville, after an incredible stage 20 in the Galician hills. After an all day battle, the Frenchman was caught by the GC contenders on the final ascent of the day but he kicked again with 1.6km to go and snatched the victory ahead of Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma), Adam Yates (Ineos Grenadiers) and Jack Haig (Bahrain Victorious), who climbs on the overall podium after Miguel Angel Lopez (Movistar Team) and Egan Bernal (Ineos Grenadiers) didn’t follow a key attack with 60km to go. On Sunday, La Vuelta 21 finishes with a time-trial to Santiago de Compostela.

The peloton of La Vuelta 21 face a final mountain stage with almost 3,500m of elevation and four categorised climb on Galician roads ahead of the final ascent to the summit finish at Alto Castro de Herville. 143 riders roll from Sanxenxo without Oier Lazkano (Caja Rural-Seguros RGA) and Aleksandr Vlasov (Astana-Premier Tech), who suffered crashes in the previous days.
After an intense battle, a 16-man breakaway gets together at km 42: Lilian Calmejane, Clément Champoussin, Stan Dewulf (AG2R-Citroën Team), Floris de Tier (Alpecin-Fenix), Mark Padun (Bahrain Victorious), Dani Navarro (Burgos-BH), Jesus Herrada (Cofidis), Mikel Bizkarra (Euskaltel Euskadi), Jan Hirt (Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert Matériaux), Sylvain Moniquet (Lotto Soudal), Nick Schultz (Team BikeExchange), Romain Bardet, Chris Hamilton, Michael Storer (Team DSM), Ryan Gibbons, Matteo Trentin (UAE Team Emirates).

With no GC threat at the front, Jumbo-Visma take it easy in the peloton. The gap increases to almost 12’ before Ineos Grenadiers up the pace on the first climb of the day, the cat-3 Alto de Vilachan, inside the last 100km. They bring the gap down to 5’ over the next climb, the cat-2 Alto de Mabia.
The race situation is turned upside down on the main climb of the day, the cat-1 Alto de Mougas: 9.9km, 6.3%. After a series of attacks and counter-attacks, five riders emerge from the GC group with 60km to go: Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma), Enric Mas (Movistar Team), Jack Haig, with Gino Mäder (Bahrain Victorious), and Simon Yates (Ineos Grenadiers). Miguel Angel Lopez (Movistar Team), 3rd overall, and Egan Bernal (Ineos Grenadiers), best young rider, are not in that group.
At the front, Gibbons goes solo on the downhill, with more than 50km to go. He goes over the cat-2 Alto de Prado with a gap of 55’’ to a first chase group, led by Bardet and Storer. Padun drops to the GC group, to help Haig climb on the overall podium and Mäder take the white jersey. The Lopez-Bernal group are 4’ behind.
They catch the chasers at the bottom of the final climb (9.9km, 4.8%), Gibbons is still 1’45’’ ahead. Gibbons is caught inside the last 5km and after a series of attacks, Champoussin goes all in with 1.6km to go and resists Primoz Roglic on the line. Meanwhile, Lopez abandons.

Ruhiger Tag für BORA-hansgrohe auf der 19. Etappe der Vuelta a España

Das ständige Auf und Ab der 187,8 km langen Strecke durch Galizien machte das Terrain ideal für einen Ausreißercoup, sollten die schnellen Männer nach den vorherigen schweren Bergetappen keine guten Beine mehr haben, um am Ende um den Sieg zu kämpfen. Nach dem Start in Tapia gab es einen großen Kampf um die Ausreißergruppe, die sich letztlich im zweiten Anstieg absetzen konnte und am Ende der Etappe den Sieg auch unter sich ausmachte. Mit keinen Fahrern in der Spitzengruppe war Felix Großschartner der bestplatzierte BORA-hansgrohe Fahrer, der die Ziellinie im Hauptfeld 18 Sekunden hinter dem Tagessieger M. Cort überquerte.

„Wir wussten, dass auf der heutigen Etappe eine Spitzengruppe ankommen könnte, aber dass es auch genauso gut zum Sprint kommen könnte. Wir haben für das Szenario, dass eine Spitzengruppe ankommt versucht, mit Patrick Gamper vorne dabei zu sein. Leider ist er mit Krämpfen aus der Spitzengruppe zurückgekommen, und für unseren Sprinter Jordi Meeus war der Parcours leider zu schwer. Am Ende ist der Tagessieg an die Spitzengruppe gegangen und das Feld ist um Platz 8 gesprintet. Wir haben uns in der Gesamtwertung durch den Sturz von Meintjes auf Platz 12 verbessert und wir wünschen ihm eine gute Besserung und hoffen, dass ihm nichts Schlimmes passiert ist.“ – Jens Zemke, Sportlicher Leiter

Another thriller and another win for Cort Nielsen

Magnus Cort Nielsen (EF Education Nippo) took his third stage win of La Vuelta 21 on Friday, after a 191.5km battle from Tapia to Monforte de Lemos. The Dane made the early breakaway over the first climbs of the day. The gap never went higher than 2’45’’ but Cort Nielsen was still in a position to outsprint his last companions at the end of stage 19, only 18’’ ahead of the raging bunch. The race is in Galicia and Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) collected his 50th Grand Tour leader jersey only two days ahead of the finish in Santiago de Compostela.
The peloton of La Vuelta 21 have overcome the biggest mountains of this edition and are now facing another type of challenge with 191.2 hilly km from Tapia to Monforte de Lemos. The stage features more than 3,200m of elevation with early climbs leading to a big battle for the breakaway.

18 riders at the front
Mikael Cherel (AG2R-Citroën Team), Ander Okamika (Burgos-BH), Aritz Bagües (Caja Rural-Seguros RGA) and Nico Denz (Team DSM) are the first attackers of the day. Antonio Jesus Soto (Euskaltel Euskadi), Mark Padun (Bahrain Victorious) and Damien Touzé (AG2R-Citroën Team) join them at km 5. And 17 more riders, including Magnus Cort Nielsen (EF Education Nippo), bridge the gap just ahead of the first climb (km 12).
The pace is relentless with many more attacks on the first two climbs of the day, the cat-3 Alto de Sela and the cat-2 Alto da Garganta. Fabio Jakobsen (Deceuninck-Quick Step), wearing the green jersey, is among the riders dropped with the hard pace set on these ascents.

The situation eventually settles on the third climb of the day, with 18 riders at the front: Mikaël Cherel, Damien Touzé (AG2R-Citroën Team), Jay Vine (Alpecin-Fenix), Mark Padun (Bahrain Victorious), Pelayo Sanchez (Burgos-BH), Julen Amezqueta (Caja Rural-Seguros RGA), Andrea Bagioli (Deceuninck-Quick Step), Lawson Craddock, Magnus Cort Nielsen (EF Education-Nippo), Antonio Jesus Soto (Euskaltel-Euskadi), Anthony Roux (Groupama-FDJ), Andreas Kron (Lotto Soudal), Robert Stannard (Team BikeExchange), Nico Denz (Team DSM), Fabio Aru (Team Qhubeka NextHash), Quinn Simmons (Trek-Segafredo), Jan Polanc, Rui Oliveira (UAE Team Emirates).

An incrdibly tight finale
Alberto Dainese’s Team DSM pull the bunch and the gap never gets higher than 2’45’’ as the race enters the last 100km. With the bunch closing in on them, the early attackers accelerate again inside the last 65km and the breakaway is torn in pieces. A crash in the bunch with 43km to go leads to the abandon of Louis Meintjes (Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert-Matériaux). Team BikeExchange take the helm of the peloton for Michael Matthews.
At the front, Simmons and Oliveira drop their companions with 34km to go. But they’re joined by Bagioli, Craddock, Cort Nielsen, Roux and Kron 8km later. The peloton trail by 28’’. And the gap is still up to 30’’ with 7.5km to go, and 20’’ into the last kilometre.
Simmons opens up the sprint but Cort Nielsen edges the young American and Bagioli on the line. Only 18’’ behind, Dainese is the fastest rider in the bunch but can’t take the win.

The Dutch star Annemiek van Vleuten (Movistar Team) dominated on Friday the second stage of the CERATIZIT Challenge by La Vuelta 21. After a first hilly stage, day 2 saw the field take on a 7.3km uphill time-trial leading to the mountain resort of Manzaneda with slopes at an average gradient of 5.8%. Following her Olympic title in Tokyo’s ITT, Van Vleuten set a winning time of 19’08’’. The overall leader Marlen Reusser (Ale’BTC Ljubljana), also a silver medallist in the Olympic ITT, finished 2nd on the day (+19’’) and Marta Cavalli (FDJ Nouvelle-Aquitaine Futuroscope) rounded out the podium with a gap of 27’’.

“I chose the time-trial bike because it was faster for me and I was just happy to ride it”, Van Vleuten said. She announced a big battle to try and overturn Reusser’s lead before the race reaches Santiago de Compostela on Sunday: “Tomorrow, I have nothing to lose and everything to win. I hope other teams feel like that and we can put on a big show.”

With another strong performance, Marlen Reusser has an advantage of 1’36’’ overall on Pauliena Rooijakkers (LIV Racing) and Annemiek van Vleuten is now third (+1’39”). The Swiss champ also leads the points standings. On Saturday, the penultimate stage will see the peloton take on another hilly course from the mountain resort of Manzaneda to Pereiro de Aguiar.

Schwerer Tag für Felix Großschartner am Alto del Gamoniteiro

War die gestrige Etappe schwer, so folgte heute eine noch brutalere 162 km lange Etappe, die mit der Bergankunft am Alto del Gamoniteiro, einem Monsterberg in Asturien, den Abschluss eines sehr harten Tages im Sattel bildete. Für die GC-Anwärter war dies die beste verbleibende Chance, sich in der Gesamtwertung zu verbessern und diejenigen, die einen schlechten Tag hatten, konnten ihre GC-Chancen verlieren. Mit noch 70 km setzte sich M. Storer von der Ausreißergruppe ab, wurde aber im letzten Anstieg wieder von seinen Verfolgern eingeholt. Als M. Lopez 3 km vor dem Ziel attackierte, konnte ihm keiner folgen und der Kolumbianer holte den Etappensieg. Felix Großschartner, der gestern gestürzt war, hatte leider im letzten Anstieg den Anschluss an die Favoritengruppe verloren und überquerte die Ziellinie auf dem 27. Platz, was den 13. Rang in der Gesamtwertung bedeutet.

Lopez tames the mighty Gamoniteiru

Miguel Angel Lopez took victory on the gruelling slopes of the Altu d’El Gamoniteiru (14.6km with an average gradient of 9.8%) on Thursday. The Colombian attacked inside the last 4km of the queen stage of La Vuelta 21, featuring 4,500m of elevation, to claim the solo win ahead of Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) and his Movistar Team companion Enric Mas. Lopez takes his third stage win in the Spanish Grand Tour, four years after the previous two. In 2020, he had already dominated a similar ascent, Col de la Loze, in the Tour de France.

After a crazy day towards the iconic Lagos de Covadonga, the peloton of La Vuelta 21 discover a new monster. The stage features 4,500m of elevation, with classics such as the Puertu de San Llaurienzu, La Cobertoria and El Cordal before an unprecedented summit finish at Altu d’El Gamoniteiru, atop a 14.6km climb with an average gradient of 9.8%.
After 10km of battle, a group of 32 attackers make the break of the day, with riders such as Michael Storer (Team DSM), Rafal Majka (UAE Team Emirates) and Rein Taaramäe (Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert Matériaux) hunting for another stage win on the roads of La Vuelta 21.

Arensman sets Storer’s move
The gap is up to 3’ after 20km, and 5’ on the first ascent of the day, the cat-1 Puerto de San Llaurienzu (9.9km, 8.6%). Bahrain Victorious drive the bunch. Storer goes first over the top to defend Romain Bardet’s polka dot jersey and maybe eventually power to the lead of the KOM standings.
Thymen Arensman (Team DSM) sets the pace at the front on the second ascent of the day, the cat-1 Altu de la Cobertoria (7.9km, 8.6%). Storer goes solo inside the last 2km of the climb, with 70km to go. Pelayo Sanchez (Burgos-BH) sets off in pursuit but Storer pushes his advantage. On the downhill, he enjoys a lead of 2’ to his first chasers, and 5’30’’ to the peloton.

Storer hangs on
Movistar Team start working at the front of the bunch alongside Bahrain Victorious and the gap is down to 2’30’’ at the bottom of the penultimate climb of the day, the cat-2 Alto del Cordal (8.2km, 5.8%).
UAE Team Emirates and Ineos Grenadiers up the ante on the climb. Romain Bardet and Mikel Bizkarra (Team DSM) briefly go on the move but Storer is alone at the front with a gap of 2’10’’, at the bottom of the mighty Gamoniteiru.
Geoffrey Bouchard (AG2R-Citroën Team) attacks 12km away from the summit. Then David De la Cruz (UAE Team Emirates) goes on the move with a bit more than 10km to go while Bahrain Victorious still set the pace in the GC bunch.

Superman attacks
De la Cruz catches Storer with 7km to go. Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert Matériaux up the pace to bring the gap down to 35’’ when De la Cruz goes solo (5.5km to go). Egan Bernal (Ineos Grenadiers) attacks with 5km to go. And Miguel Angel Lopez (Movistar Team) counter-attacks inside the last 4km.
The Colombian quickly catches and drops De la Cruz. He goes solo to the finish to complete his set of summit victories in La Vuelta, after Calar Alto and Sierra Nevada in 2017, 14’’ ahead of Roglic and 20’’ ahead of Enric Mas.
