Vollering is an absolute Queen

Demi Vollering (SD Worx) impressed again as she tamed the Mur de Huy and all the rivals standing in her way to victory in the 26th edition of La Flèche Wallonne Femmes. Already a winner of the Amstel Gold Race (on Sunday) and Liège-Bastogne-Liège (2021), the Oranje star completes her set of triumphs in the hilly Northern classics, following the tracks of her former teammate and now sports director Anna van der Breggen. Put under pressure by her rivals, especially Movistar and Trek-Segafredo, Vollering took matters in her own hands and set a brutal pace on the final ascents to rise to glory. She’s a hot favourite for Sunday, in line with her other successes this Spring (Strade Bianche and Dwars door Vlanderen) and the dominant displays of performance of her team.

A 139-woman peloton set off from Huy’s Grand-Place under the sun, at 8:35. Attackers quickly try to get away but it takes 43km for two riders to really open a gap, just before the first of three ascents up the Mur de Huy. Caroline Andersson (Liv Racing Teqfind) and Antri Christoforou (Human Powered Health) enjoy a lead of 1’10’’ but the gap decreases to 30’’ at the summit (km 52.8).

Van Vleuten’s early move
Rachel Neylan (Cofidis) and Ella Harris (Lifeplus Wahoo) counter-attack and bridge the gap after 60km of intense racing. Karin Soderqvist (Lifeplus Wahoo) but she’s reeled in by the bunch on the first ascent of the Côte d’Ereffe. Movistar and Canyon//Sram up the ante, already showing their will to shake the race, but SD Worx react for Demi Vollering.

The attackers are caught on the Côte de Cherave (km 84.4) and Annemiek van Vleuten’s Movistar accelerate again towards the second ascent of the Mur de Huy. And the Dutch icon, wearing the rainbow jersey, accelerates on the ascent. Only Kasia Niewiadoma (Canyon//Sram), Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio (AG Insurance-Soudal Quick-Step) and Elisa Longo Borghini (Trek-Segafredo) accompany her at the front.

Spratt’s solo
SD Worx must react again. And Vollering herself pulls the bunch to get back to the attackers with 33km to go. But Trek-Segafredo maintain the pressure and Amanda Spratt goes solo with 32km to go.
Justine Ghekiere (AG Insurance-Soudal Quick-Step), Ricarda Bauernfeid (Canyon//Sram) and Erica Magnaldi (UAE Team ADQ) set off in pursuit. But Spratt is on for a one-woman-show. Atop the Côte d’Ereffe (18.4km to go), the chasers trial by 40’’ and the peloton by 1’05’’.

Vollering’s dominance
Movistar react to bring the gap down and Spratt is caught on the penultimate ascent of the day, Côte de Cherave, with 7km to go. Vollering sets a brutal pace on the ascent and only 10 riders can follow her into the last 5km.

The Oranje star is back at the front as she tackles the first slopes up the Mur de Huy. Into the last 400m, Liane Lippert (Movistar) and Mavi Garcia (Liv Racing Teqfind) are still with Vollering… But Anna van der Breggen’s successor surges to victory, the 13th for a Dutch rider in 26 editions of La Flèche Wallonne Femmes.

Jackson’s most extraordinary day in Hell

The 3rd edition of Paris-Roubaix Femmes avec Zwift delivered an incredible scenario, capped off by a thrilling finale that eventually crowned Alison Jackson (EF Education-TibcoSVB). The Canadian rider is one of the six members of the early breakaway that narrowly managed to edge the favourites in the André Pétrieux velodrome. At 34 years old, she outsprinted her companions and rivals Katia Ragusa (Liv Racing Teqfind) and Marthe Truyen (Fenix-Deceuninck). Jackson is the first Canadian winner in the long history of Paris-Roubaix (her compatriot Steve Bauer was 2nd in 1990). Only 12 seconds behind, Lotte Kopecky (SD Worx) was the fastest in the bunch to finish 7th after an eventful day of racing in the Hell of the North.

The 140 contenders of the 3rd edition of Paris-Roubaix Femmes avec Zwift start from Denain under a cloudy sky. The roads are dry but wet sections await them on the cobbles of the Hell of the North.
Attackers are inspired nonetheless and it takes a long battle for the break to get away. After 22km, 18 riders lead the way: Lisa Klein (Trek-Segafredo), Femke Markus (SD Worx), Alice Towers (Canyon//Sram), Eugénie Duval (FDJ-Suez), Daniek Hengeveld (DSM), Marta Lach (Ceratizit-WNT), Katia Ragusa (Liv Racing Teqfind), Laura Tomasi (UAE Team ADQ), Josie Talbot (Cofidis), Lisa van Helvoirt (Parkhotel Valkenburg), Julia Borgström (AG Insurance-Soudal Quick-Step), Alison Jackson (EF Education-Tibco-SVB), Marie Morgane Le Deunff (Arkea), Susanne Andersen (Uno-X), Amber Pate (Jayco AlUla), Jesse Vandenbulcke (Human Powered Health), Marion Borras (St Michel-Mavic-Auber) and Marthe Truyen (Fenix-Deceuninck).

Onto the cobbles – Vos punctures, Kopecky attacks
The gap reaches a maximum of 5’40’’ at km 40. The tension and the pace increase towards the first cobbles of the day, from Hornaing to Wandignies (km 63). Onto sector 16, Hengeveld goes solo at the front and Van Helvoirt is dropped. And Marianne Vos (Jumbo-Visma) suffers a mechanical problem.

Trek-Segafredo react in the third sector of the day, from Tilloy to Sars-et-Rosières. Then, it’s up to SD Worx to up the ante. Lorena Wiebes accelerates on the cobbles from Auchy-lez-Orchies to Bersée. And Lotte Kopecky quickly follows up with a strong attack, 53km away from the finish. Meanwhile, Hengeveld is caught by her chasers while the gap to the front of the race quickly drops to 3 minutes.

Longo Borghini’s crash
A handful of riders get back to Kopecky, including the defending champion Elisa Longo Borghini (Trek-Seggafredo). The Italian star sets the pace in sector 9 but she goes down with 37km to go and everyone hits the cobbles, except for Romy Kasper (AG Insurance-Soudal Quick-Step).
Kasper is joined by Lucinda Brand (Trek-Segafredo), Elise Chabbey (Canyon//Sram), Pfeiffer Georgi (Team DSM), Marta Bastianelli, Chiara Consonni (UAE Team ADQ), Julie Leth (Uno-X), Margaux Vigié (Lifeplus Wahoo), Maria Martins and Christina Schweinberger (Fenix-Deceuninck) with 30km to go. They trail by 1’55’’ while the peloton, with Lonogo Borghini, Kopecky and Vos, trail by 2’55’’.

Thriller in Roubaix
The front group explodes with the cobbles of Camphin-en-Pévèle and Carrefour de l’Arbre. Only seven riders remain at the front: Jackson, Lach, Duval, Markus, Ragusa, Truyen and Borras. On the other hand, Kopecky drives a strong chase and the favourites get back together, a minute behind the leaders.
The gap is down to 15’’ with 10km to go… And up to 20’’ with 5km! Brand and Longo Borghini try to accelerate but their rivals are quick to react. The seven leaders enter the velodrome with a lead of 13’’. They will sprint for victory!
Lach leads the way, Markus hits the deck, Borras opens up the sprint… But Jackson storms to an extraordinary victory at 34 years old. Only 12’’ behind, Kopecky outsprints her rival to finish 7th.

120th PARIS–ROUBAIX 2023 SECTOR RATINGS

Key points:

 On 9 April, the peloton of the 120th edition will battle it out on a 256.6 km course with 54.5 km of cobbles spread out over 29 sectors, the first of which comes 160 km from the line. Each sector is rated on a scale from one to five stars.
 Meanwhile, the third edition of Paris–Roubaix Femmes avec Zwift, which will be held one day earlier on Saturday, 8 April, features 29.2 km of cobblestones. The last 84 km of the men’s and women’s races are identical.

Following Paris–Roubaix race director Thierry Gouvenou and Paris–Roubaix Femmes avec Zwift race director Franck Perque’s most recent reconnaissance of the course on 4 April, the organisers have rated the difficulty of the cobbled sectors in the race based on their length, the unevenness of the cobbles, the overall condition of the sectors and their location. The Trouée d’Arenberg (no. 19), Mons-en-Pévèle (no. 11) and the Carrefour de l’Arbre (no. 4) remain the only sectors with a five-star rating.

The cobble-gobblers scouting the roads from now until Sunday will spend the week acclimatising to this exceptional terrain and putting their gear through its paces. Meanwhile, the organisers have turned the invitation for the media to join in the recces into a tradition that starts with a fluffy omelette for breakfast at Chez Françoise in Troisvilles, an institution of Paris–Roubaix. Yet, with the first cobbled sector just around the corner, grub will be the last thing on the minds of the riders when they zip past this famous café on Sunday. The return of the three-star Haspres sector (km 139.6) for the first time since the 2004 Paris–Roubaix will add an element of surprise. The Trouée d’Arenberg, the most dreaded and often decisive moment of the race since its introduction in 1968, has received a makeover from an un-baa-lievable team of gardeners in anticipation of the peloton blasting into the sector at nearly 70 km/h. A 40-strong herd of goats was called into action to nibble away at the weeds coating this forest lane, which turns into the biggest arena on planet cycling once a year. It was the ideal solution to reduce the risk of slipping without applying toxic products to this protected area. The champions who emerge unscathed from the Trouée d’Arenberg and inch a bit closer to the coveted trophy will owe the Goat Gang a big „thank you“! It is 93 kilometres from there until the finish line.

In contrast with their male counterparts, the riders of Paris–Roubaix Femmes avec Zwift will not reap the rewards of the goats‘ work, while the first part of the course has been stretched, bringing the total distance close to 150 km. The cobblestones remain unchanged, with 29.2 km spread out over 17 sectors. The women’s course will converge on the men’s one with 84 km to go, starting with the 3.7 km long four-star sector from Hornaing to Wandignies, the very same one that Brit Lizzie Deignan used as a springboard for her victorious solo adventure last year. It will be much harder to catch the favourites unawares this time round.

Paris-Roubaix Challenge

Saturday, April 8th 2022 – 24 hours before Paris-Roubaix and a few hours before Paris-Roubaix Femmes avec Zwift, a peloton of amateur riders will measure themselves on this legendary spring classic and its fabled cobblestone sectors. Three distances are on offer to cyclists, in order to accommodate all the preparation levels: 70, 145 and 170 kms. Every rider will find an appropriate legend.

HISTORICAL SERIES : IT TAKES TWO TO TANGLE
The legends of sport are forged in the fire of long-running rivalries between two champions. Paris–Roubaix, a prime target for the cobble-gobblers, often sets the stage for no-holds-barred contests between acrobats on wheels. A mechanical at the wrong time, poor positioning or a moment of hesitation when the decisive move comes can seal the outcome of the race. The site paris-roubaix.fr looks back on the history of these epic duels ahead of the latest showdown between the best of enemies, Wout van Aert and Mathieu van der Poel, in their hunt for a maiden win in the Queen of Classics.

The first three episodes can be found on the Paris-Roubaix website
