– Rolf Aldag, sportlicher Leiter

Clarke’s long ride to glory

Australia’s Simon Clarke claimed his maiden Tour de France stage victory as the early breakaway remained at the front. The Israel-Premier Tech veteran, aged 35, pipped Taco van der Hoorn on the line while Edvald Boasson Hagen rounded out the podium. Wout van Aert who crashed before the cobbled sector and waited for Jonas Vingegaard who had punctured retained the yellow jersey by the margin of 13 seconds over breakaway member Neilson Powless.
Highlights – Stage 5 – #TDF2022

SIX RIDERS IN THE LEAD, INCLUDING MAGNUS CORT ONCE AGAIN
176 riders started stage 5 in Lille Métropole at 13.59. Polka dot jersey holder Magnus Cort (EF Education-Easypost) went on the attack again even without any KOM point on offer. Edvald Boasson Hagen (TotalEnergies) and Taco van der Hoorn (Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert Matériaux) went with him. Simon Clarke (Israel-Premier Tech) launched a counter-attack. He was joined by Neilson Powless (EF Education-Easypost) and Alexis Gougeard (B&B Hotels-KTM). They formed a six-man breakaway at km 21.5. Van der Hoorn won the intermediate sprint at Mérignies (km 37.2) where the deficit of the bunch was 2’40’’.

VINGEGAARD PUNCTURES, ROGLIC CRASHES
Van Aert crashed in the middle of the bunch at km 57. He was back to the pack before the first cobbled sector where a maximum time difference of 4’15’’ was recorded at km 75. The time difference was 3’ between the first and second cobbled sectors. Ben O’Connor was the first of the GC contenders affected by a mechanical 50km before the end. While stage favourites like Peter Sagan and Mathieu van der Poel had got dropped, Jonas Vingegaard sustained a flat tyre with 37km remaining. Van Aert who was also in difficulty waited for his Danish team-mate. Next on the ground was Primoz Roglic before the cobbled sector 5.

IMPRESSIVE POGACAR
The leading group was reduced to five men after Gougeard got dropped with 26km to go. Jasper Stuyven attacked on the cobbled sector 3. Pogacar joined him, looking really at ease albeit without any team-mate alongside him. Boasson Hagen, Cort, Powless, Van der Hoorn and Clarke reached the 10km to go mark with 45’’ lead over Pogacar and Stuyven. Cort lost contact on the last cobbled sector with 5km to go. Powless who was the virtual Maillot Jaune in the finale surprised his breakaway companions by attacking them from behind under the red flame of the last kilometre but he got overhauled with 400 metres to go. Boasson Hagen took a bit of an advantage, then Van der Hoorn looked to have it but Clarke pipped him on the line. The Australian was already in the breakaway of stage 5 to Arenberg in 2014 but it didn’t work out that time. Thanks to the huge amount of work Van Aert produced at the service of Vingegaard along with their team-mates, the Belgian retained the overall lead while Roglic lost over two minutes to Pogacar.

Simon Clarke: „I thought today was maybe the day…“
“I mean, after winter I had, I had no team and Israel-Premier Tech rang me up. I was given that chance… Today is the reality check that everything can happen if you take the opportunity. The first few days of the Tour, I was looking after the team. But this morning, the team director said: ‘Clarkey, today is a breakaway day!’ The stages I won at La Vuelta and the pink jersey I had at the Giro all came in the first week of the race. So I thought today was maybe the day… But I still can’t believe it. I passed Taco less than 50 meters to go. I gave my bike the biggest throw I could. My stages at La Vuelta came in similar finishes. I chose to sit back and hope for the other guys to crack before. I really had to chase Edvald down. We’ve been sprinting since the last corner. I went as hard as I could until the line. I moved to Europe for racing when I was 16 and I’ll turn 36 on the second rest day of the Tour, so after 20 years, now the dream comes true. Hi to everyone in Australia and thanks for the support through all those years!”

– Rolf Aldag, sportlicher Leiter

Tour de France
@ASO/Pauline Ballet

Wout van Aert took a solo victory in Calais after he failed to win the time trial and bunch sprints in Denmark. First on the line after three second places, the Belgian extended his lead in the overall classification on the eve of the cobbled stage to Arenberg. Jasper Philipsen won the bunch sprint eight seconds behind the Maillot Jaune and Christophe Laporte rounded out the podium.
Highlights – Stage 4 – #TDF2022

MAGNUS CORT AWAY AGAIN, WITH ANTHONY PEREZ
176 riders took the start of stage 2 in Dunkirk at 13.29. Anthony Perez (Cofidis) was the first attacker, from the gun, quickly followed by Magnus Cort (EF Education-Easyport). They reached an advantage of 6’39’’ after 25km of racing before Quick Step-Alpha Vinyl got organised at the helm of the peloton. The time difference was down to 4’45’’ atop Mont Cassel where Cort took one more KOM point and thus secured his polka dot jersey for at least two more days. Quick Step put the hammer down in the descent and split the peloton in three pieces. The time gap went below 4’ before going on the up again as the bunch slowed down after regrouping. Perez was first on the line of the intermediate sprint at Lumbres (km 63).

PEREZ ON HIS OWN IN THE LAST HOUR OF RACING
Perez and Cort got a maximum advantage of 7’15’’ at km 80. Lotto-Soudal, Alpecin-Deceuninck and later Trek-Segrafredo upped the tempo at the head of the peloton. As Cort took his ninth consecutive KOM victory at côte de Nielles-lès-Bléquin, he mathematically secured the polka dot jersey until stage 7 to La Super Planche des belles filles. He continued collecting KOM points at côte de Harlettes (km 102.7) where the time gap was reduced to 2’25’’ and côte de Ventus (km 123.6) where the peloton was timed only 1’15’’ adrift. Right after the second last climb of the day, Perez attacked to go solo with 45km to go.

VAN AERT ON THE OFFENSIVE IN THE LAST CLIMB
Perez was reeled in before the top of Cap Blanc-Nez with 11km as Van Aert passed him after his Jumbo-Visma team sped up in the climb. The Maillot Jaune forged on by himself after Adam Yates and Jonas Vingegaard failed to remain in his slipstream. He kept going on a time trial mode till the finish line in Calais to grab one more spectacular stage victory, his seventh at the Tour de France but the first one with the yellow jersey on his shoulder. Another Belgian came second as Jasper Philipsen celebrated as well, obviously not knowing that his compatriot had remained alone ahead.
Wout van Aert: „I didn’t want to risk losing“

“I didn’t want to take the risk of losing anymore. It was quite obvious that we were trying something with the team. We were in a perfect position with Nathan [van Hooydonck] and Steven [Kruijswijk]. Nathan opened up. We heard through the radio that some damage was made, so I went full gas to see what would happen. I was a bit in doubt, if I had to wait for Jonas [Vingegaard] and [Adam] Yates but I went full gas so Jonas didn’t have to ride. In the last10km I went all out. This jersey gives wings.

TOUR DE FRANCE FEMMES AVEC ZWIFT

Stars align in Paris

Key points:
• Three weeks ahead of the first Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift, the provisional list of starters features the top 25 riders in the UCI rankings.
• The Dutch stars (Van Vleuten, Vollering, Wiebes, Vos…) come in numbers but they’ll face rivals from all around the world, with Italy’s Balsamo and Cavalli, South Africa’s Moolman-Pasio, USA’s Faulkner…
• From Paris to La Super Planche des Belles Files, the crowds will be able to celebrate the French national champion Audrey Cordon-Ragot and her compatriots Juliette Labous and Evita Muzic, among other local heroes taking on the eight stages (July 24-31).

Racing is in full swing with the Tour de France, and a stellar peloton is about to get into action with the start of the first Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift on July 24th, when their male counterparts reach Paris. The biggest stars of women cycling have circled the date on their calendar since last year’s announcement, with a route presentation seducing all types of riders: sprinters, climbers, GC contenders and stage hunters…

Marianne Vos is among the most versatile and talented cyclist ever, so it’s only natural to see her lead a strong Jumbo-Visma line-up as the Dutch icon pursues yellow glory to go along with her many rainbow triumphs (14 world Elite champion titles across road racing, cyclo-cross and track).
Deprived from Paris-Roubaix avec Zwift because of Covid-19, Vos returned to competition at the Dutch National championships and returned to success in the Giro d’Italia Donne, where she’s currently facing other contenders who will soon light fireworks on French roads. Among them, BikeExchange-Jayco’s Kristen Faulkner rose to the forefront this year in stage races (3rd of Itzulia, 2nd of the Tour de Suisse).

Marta Cavalli (FDJ Nouvelle-Aquitaine Futuroscope, set to become FDJ-Suez-Futuroscope on July 15) is another rising star this season and she’ll display her talents alongside Cecilie Uttrup Ludwig, recently crowned Danish national champion, after a spring campaign hampered by illness.
From Italy, Trek-Segafredo’s Elisa Balsamo is racking up more and more successes with the rainbow jersey on her shoulders. She spearheads the American powerhouse alongside her compatriot Elisa Longo Borghini, a recent winner of the Women’s Tour after her historic conquest in Roubaix this spring. They will also enjoy a strong Dutch support from Ellen van Dijk, the fresh holder of the Hour record. Her predecessor, Great Britain’s Joscelin Lowden, is also set to participate with Uno-X Pro Cycling Team.

Van Dijk and Vos are far from being the only representatives of the Dutch power in the first edition of the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift. Leader of the UCI rankings and a winner of Liège-Bastogne-Liège Femmes in April, Annemiek van Vleuten (Movistar Team Women) is on a mission after the announcement of her retirement in 2023. Pauliena Rooijakkers gets ready to lead Canyon//Sram Racing’s ambitions alongside Poland’s Kasia Niewiadoma. And there will be six teams from the Netherlands taking on the road from Paris to La Super Blanche des Belles Filles.

Team DSM’s Lorena Wiebes will be a strong contender for the first Maillot Jaune and her French teammate Juliette Labous is getting ready for mountainous battles. Local crowds will also be able to cheer for the French National champion Audrey Cordon-Ragot (Trek-Segafredo) and other young talents on the rise such as Evita Muzic (FDJ Nouvelle-Aquitaine Futuroscope).

For a week, they will notably face the many stars of Team SD Worx: Lotte Kopecky, Demi Vollering, Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio… The Dutch powerhouse has riders to chase victory on all terrains. But everyone wants to shine in the first Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift.

THE WEBSERIE
The webserie « Les Femmes Du Tour » tells the stories of these trailblazing champions. From Audrey Cordon-Ragot’s Brittany to the Netherlands of Marianne Vos, passing by Gerona (Spain), where Kasia Niewiadoma and Cecilie Uttrup Ludwig live, meet the stars who dream of the first Maillot Jaune.

– Rolf Aldag, sportlicher Leiter

Groenewegen bounces back in style
Tour de France 2022 | Stage 3 | Vejle > Sønderborg

Three years after his last win at the Tour de France, Dylan Groenewegen claimed his fifth stage victory as he successfully sprinted in Sonderborg, beating Wout van Aert, Jasper Philipsen and Peter Sagan in a tight finish.
It makes it a three out of three for riders from Benelux in the Danish stages as a Dutchman took over from Belgians Yves Lampaert and van Aert, emulating Jan Raas and Walter Planckaert who captured the first three stages in 1978. Van Aert will take the Maillot Jaune with him to France.
Highlights – Stage 3 – #TDF2022

MAGNUS CORT FROM THE GUN
176 riders started stage 3 in Vejle at 13.13. Polka dot jersey wearer Magnus Cort (EF Education-Easypost) attacked from the gun. Nobody followed him. He reached an advantage of 6’40’’ after 20km of racing. Mikkel Honoré for Quick Step-Alpha Vinyl seized the reins of the peloton to set a steady tempo, later relayed by veteran Philippe Gilbert for Lotto-Soudal. Sprinters’ teams maintained the difference around three minutes for most of the race while Cort enjoyed extending his lead in the KOM classification at Koldingveg (km 27) and Heljsminde Strand (km 82), both cat. 4 climbs in which he took one more point.

VAN AERT FIRST OF THE PELOTON AT THE INTERMEDIATE SPRINT
Cort passed the line of the intermediate sprint at Christianfeld (km 90) 1’45’’ before the peloton. Wout van Aert won the sprint of the bunch with Fabio Jakobsen closing in third place, so the Belgian extended his lead in the points classification. Following that effort, the time gap went below one minute (55’’) but the pacers of the pack decided to slow down and let Cort alone in the lead for some more kilometres. The Dane took the sixth and last KOM point up for grab in the stages held in his country and extended his lead in the climbers’ competition. He was reeled in with 52km to go after 130km at the front by himself in front of an enormous crowd.

FIFTH TOUR DE FRANCE VICTORY FOR GROENEWEGEN
There was no breakaway attempt for the remaining of the race. Successively, Alpecin-Deceuninck and Quick Step-Alpha Vinyl led the bunch in the run in to the bunch sprint after a crash divided the peloton in two parts. All the top sprinters were up there. Michael Morkov was in perfect position in the final 800-metre long straight line but Fabio Jakobsen had lost his wheel, so it was Christophe Laporte who gave the perfect lead out to van Aert. Peter Sagan tried to pass on the right side but the gap was in the middle of the road so Groenewegen who had a great top end speed at his disposal chose the right path to his fifth Tour de France victory (after his successes in 2018 and 2019). It’s his big come back after the horrendous crash of the 2020 Tour de Pologne that involved him and Jakobsen, the first two bunch sprint winners.

Dylan Groenewegen: „Every victory at the Tour de France is special, not only this one“
“I crashed with 9km to go but the team brought me back. Amund Groendahl Jansen put me in a perfect position even though I got boxed. He’s very strong. He was my team-mate before at Jumbo-Visma. He went full gas for me. I took a lot of wind and my legs were tired but I still had enough to sprint to the line. Wout van Aert always joke, saying that if you are not sure of having won, you still claim the victory and you celebrate. That’s what I did. I understood I won from the sport directors screaming in the car. Then I found my father. He follows me for three weeks but usually I don’t see him and today he was there, right in front of me. It was special to share that moment with him and make him happy too. My family supported me greatly after what happened [the crash at the 2020 Tour de Pologne that resulted in a ban for him]. My new team has put a lot of faith in me and a great train to lead me out. Every victory at the Tour de France is special, not only this one.”

– Rolf Aldag, sportlicher Leiter

First timers Fabio Jakobsen and Wout van Aert
Tour de France 2022 | Stage 2 | Roskilde > Nyborg

On his first participation to the Tour de France, Fabio Jakobsen claimed the 50th stage victory of Quick Step-Alpha Vinyl since 2001. Second on the line in the bunch gallop following the big show on the Great Belt bridge, Wout van Aert took the yellow jersey for the first time in his career.

FOUR RIDERS IN THE LEAD
176 took the start of stage 2 in Roskilde at 12.39. Denmark’s Magnus Cort (EF Education-Easypost) was the first attacker of the day. Sven Erik Bystrom (Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert Matériaux), Cyril Barthe and Pierre Rolland (B&B Hotels-KTM) joined him at the front with the consent of the peloton. Their maximum advantage as a quartet was recorded at km12: 2’15’’, before Danish riders from sprinters’ teams seized the reins of the peloton: Mikkel Honoré for Quick Step-Alpha Vinyl, Chris Juul-Jensen for Team BikeExchange-Jayco and Andreas Kron for Lotto-Soudal.

CORT BEATS BYSTROM FOR THE POLKA DOT JERSEY
Rolland tried to anticipate the sprint for the first KOM of the Tour located at km 62 but the Frenchman didn’t manage to go clear and Cort logically won the sprint against Bystrom at Asnaes Indelukke (km 62). Up the hill, the two riders from B&B Hotels-KTM lost contact with the two Scandinavians. Once Cort and Bystrom became a leading duo, the gap to the peloton increased to three minutes whereas Rolland and Barthe failed to come across. Cort fought hard to beat Bystrom again at Hove Straede (km 72.5). It was much easier at Karup Strandbakke (km 84), so the Dane raised his hands up in the air as if he had won a stage. All three KOM were classified in fourth category so the EF Education-EasyPost rider totalled three points to take the polka dot jersey ten years after his compatriot Michael Morkov.

LAMPAERT CRASHES, COMES BACK BUT LOSES THE LEAD TO VAN AERT
At half way into stage 2, after Rolland and Barthe were brought back at km 96, the peloton was timed 3’ behind Cort and Bystrom. 60km before the end, Bystrom sped up to remain alone at the front with 1’ lead while the peloton swallowed Cort. The Norwegian was eventually brought back with 31km remaining and was voted most aggressive rider of the day. Wearing the Maillot Jaune, Yves Lampaert crashed on the Great Belt Bridge but made it back in the pack 16km before the end. It took a bit longer to Rigoberto Uran but everyone was together at the 3km to go mark. Quick Step-Alpha Vinyl led the run in but many other teams were involved in the sprint. Jakobsen proved to be the fastest as he pipped van Aert on the line but coming second was enough for the Belgian to take the Maillot Jaune for the first time ever.

Fabio Jakobsen: „Thank you Denmark for the warm welcome“
“Today it’s “incroyable”, as we would say in French. It’s been a long process step by step [to come back after his life-threatening crash in 2020], a lot of people have helped me come back so this victory is here to pay them back. I’m happy I still enjoy racing and I can win [after what happened]. The team kept me in good position in front at the end of the bridge. Michael Morkov dropped me wheel in the wheel of Wout van Aert. Then I was next to Peter Sagan. We touched each other but luckily we stayed up right and I could pass the other two rivals. I’m happy to win. My legs were in pain, but this is what we train for. For 15 years I’ve been dreaming of this and I want to say a big thanks to Denmark for the warm welcome and the encouragements.”

Tour de France makes debut in Singapore with Mark Cavendish

TOUR DE FRANCE MAKES DEBUT IN SINGAPORE WITH MARK CAVENDISH: PRUDENTIAL IS TITLE SPONSOR OF FIRST EVER TOUR DE FRANCE CRITERIUM EVENT IN SOUTHEAST ASIA

Singapore will make history as the first Southeast Asian country to host a Tour de France criterium event, supported by leading life insurer Prudential Singapore (“Prudential”) as the event’s title sponsor.

The Tour de France Prudential Singapore Criterium marks the arrival of cycling’s most prestigious brand in the region. The race will take place from 29 to 30 October on a specially-designed street circuit in the heart of the city and features 32 riders from eight of the world’s best professional cycling teams including decorated British cyclist Mark Cavendish, who holds the joint record for the most Tour de France stage wins (34). Memorably, he secured four Tour de France stage wins last year. Cavendish is also widely regarded as the sport’s greatest sprinter, with four world titles (three in track cycling and one in road) and an Olympic silver medal.

Mark Cavendish said: “Tour de France Prudential Singapore Criterium marks a few firsts – a first Tour de France road race in Southeast Asia and a first race for me in this part of the world. Cycling has given me so much and is a great part of my life. It’s a privilege for me to do what I love and I’m looking forward to getting out there and to share the adrenaline, excitement and fun that comes with criterium racing.”

The Tour de France is the pinnacle of professional cycling – watched by over a billion viewers annually. Elite cyclists compete in a gruelling test as they cover an average of 3,500 kilometres over three weeks in their quest for sporting glory. In contrast, the Criterium is a shorter race on a closed circuit, which makes the format more suited to Singapore streets. The Tour de France Prudential Singapore Criterium race weekend will comprise races for both professionals and amateurs and is expected to reach millions of viewers through a variety of international broadcasters.

Tour de France Director Christian Prudhomme said: “The Tour de France Criterium is a cycling performance, showcasing the speed and intensity of cycling through a race on an inner-city circuit. The Criterium format allows us to bring an adaptation of the Tour to more places, while still retaining the essence and spirit of the Tour De France with top riders in the heart of the city.

“With the Tour de France Criterium, cycling becomes a cultural bridge, celebrating the Tour de France atmosphere in territories the race has not yet explored. Given Singapore’s geographical location and reputation for organising great events, not to mention its enthusiastic cycling community, it was a natural choice for introducing this Criterium format to the entire Southeast Asian region. It will be a very exciting first trip to Southeast Asia for the Tour de France, and we’re looking forward to sharing the experience with the community here.”

Commenting on being part of the inaugural Singapore Criterium, Mr Dennis Tan, Prudential Singapore’s CEO, said: “As a leading life insurer, we want to support Singaporeans in leading healthier lifestyles, so we can all live well for longer. We decided to promote cycling because it is an accessible and sustainable sport. This sponsorship is a great opportunity to encourage people and families from all walks of life to bond while staying healthy and active.”

The event is supported by the Singapore Tourism Board. Mr Keith Tan, Chief Executive, Singapore Tourism Board said; “We are delighted to be the first Southeast Asian country to host the Tour De France Criterium, a premier sporting event that reinforces Singapore’s position as a leading destination for sports in the region. Cycling is an environmentally-friendly sport that is popular with locals and visitors, and events like this strongly align with Singapore’s sustainability goals, as well as our ambition to be an urban wellness haven. As we welcome more visitors to Singapore, it is also a timely addition to our exciting calendar of events.”

The Tour de France Prudential Singapore Criterium is being promoted by TEG Sport in conjunction with Evoke EXP.

Geoff Jones, Group CEO of TEG said: “TEG Sport is proud to be working with the iconic Tour de France brand on what will be a world-class and exclusive new major event for Southeast Asia. We look forward to welcoming some of world’s best professional cyclists to take part in the dynamic criterium format raced through spectacular central Singapore. Whether you’re a cycling enthusiast, a recreational rider or major events fan we encourage you to get involved in this exciting new event. On behalf of TEG Sport I’d like to thank the Singapore Tourism Board and Prudential Singapore for their partnership to bring this innovative global event to fruition.”

TOUR DE FRANCE: INFO WITH ONE DAY TO GO

Key points:

 The 109th Tour de France, the 24th starting from abroad, begins with an individual time trial in Copenhagen. First rider on the ramp: Jérémy Lecroq at 16.00. Last rider to start: Marc Soler at 18.55.
 Mathieu van der Poel to hunt for the yellow jersey in the first week like last year.
 Tadej Pogacar feels stronger and more confident as he aims for the triple crown.

ENRIC MAS’ CONFIDENCE IS AT 10 OUT OF 10
There is no trident this year, not even a leading duo: Enric Mas is the unique leader of Movistar Team for the 2022 Tour de France. “I will have one more rider at my service to solve any problem”, said the Spaniard in a pre-race press conference. “We’re here to make the podium in Paris. At the confidence level, I’m at 10 out of 10…, or even more. The physical form has been good throughout the year, and it has been the falls that have deprived us of getting a good result in the races contested so far. Let’s hope the bad luck is over.” The rider from the Baleares didn’t manage to finish Tirreno-Adriatico and the Critérium du Dauphiné due to crashes. He went down on the last stage of the Itzulia Basque Country as well and lost a few places to end up ninth overall. “I improved my way of working and I trust my training at 100% now”, he added. “It is normal that Tadej Pogacar and Primoz Roglic are the references. If they focus too much on their duel, others will have to take advantage of it. However, we have to look for a result and I’m not going to attack just for the sake of attacking. The first week is very complicated. I’m very motivated by the pavé stage. We’ve recognized it two or three times. On that day, you can make as many differences as on the high mountain stages. For me it’s a new challenge, something to learn.”

VAN DER POEL SEES THE HUNT FOR THE YELLOW JERSEY MORE DIFFICULT THIS YEAR
Mathieu van der Poel is set to take part in his second Tour de France with the same kind of ambitions but a completely different run in. This year, he missed out on the early part of the season due to injury and completed his first Grand Tour with the Giro d’Italia in which he wore the pink jersey in the first three days. With a time trial to start with, it might be more complicated for the Dutchman to take the Maillot Jaune but he still believes in his chances. “Tomorrow, if I can put myself in the top 10 and do a good time trial then maybe there’s something possible again, but it’s going to be more difficult than it was one year ago. Last year, with the first two stages, the yellow jersey was really a big chance for me. I’ve made it so it’s a bit less of a stress factor. I just have to see what’s possible. I don’t know where I will be against specialists in a time trial, and if I lose 10 to 15 seconds, which would be a really good performance, then I can maybe try something in the days after, in the Roubaix stage or another one. I prefer to be in a breakaway than in the peloton but I will also be there some days to help Jasper [Philipsen] in the sprints. We’ll share the chances of winning stages.”

ROMAIN BARDET: THE COME-BACK
Romain Bardet hasn’t competed on French roads since the 2020 Paris-Tours he finished 7th on his last season with AG2R Citroen Team. He’s back to the Tour de France with Team DSM. “We’ve had a nice teams’ presentation that made me realise how much I missed the Tour last year. Now I appreciate the greatness of the Tour even more. I come back with an even greater desire through the eyes of a kid again.” Forced to pull out of the Giro on stage 13 while he was fourth overall, he resumes racing at the Tour. “I’m unsure of my level”, he admitted. “I’ve done my best at training but racing is a different story. So I’ll first evaluate where I’m at compared to the other riders and I’ll race offensively like we did last year at La Vuelta with the whole team.”

CHRIS FROOME FEELS “PRIVILEGED” TO RIDE HIS TENTH TOUR DE FRANCE
As his team Israel-Premier Tech launched a campaign “Help Fund the Field of Dreams” to support woman cycling in Rwanda, Chris Froome expressed his happiness to start his tenth Tour de France despite all the hiccups he went through since his horrendous crash in June 2019. “Getting to Paris last year was a huge accomplishment as I had to overcome quite a few hurdles”, the four-time winner of the Tour de France said, “but yesterday was just a whole new experience. Chapeau to Copenhagen for that team presentation. I feel privileged to be part of the race. Only the last few months I’ve been feeling issue-free for the first time in three years. From January to now, except for the sickness at the Dauphiné, I’m on an upwards trajectory. I haven’t had a chance to test myself properly in a race environment. It’s unknown where I am, but rest assured that I’m gonna give 100% and I’d like to rise the occasion to win a stage.” Both his team-mates Jakob Fuglsang and Michael Woods expressed the same desire to win a stage over riding for GC. The Dane mentioned the cobblestoned stage 5 that brings him memories from the 2014 Tour de France in which he finished second at Arenberg.

DEFENDING CHAMPION TADEJ POGACAR EXCITED TO AIM FOR TRIPLE CROWN
After winning the Tour de France in the past two years, Tadej Pogacar declared: “I’m excited to start the Tour again. Like at any other race I want to do my best. This is the biggest race of the calendar, I’m happy to be at the start to fight for the title. The preparation went well with an altitude training camp and the Tour of Slovenia. I think my shape is good, not too much different compared to last year. Maybe I feel more confident, I also feel stronger but we’ll see in the race if it’s true or not. There will be difficult moment but I hope that I won’t have a bad day. There’s a tricky first week with possible crosswinds on the flat, bridges and cobbles. If we manage to remain united as a team, we don’t need to ride aggressively, we just have to fight for positions. We’re ready for that so we shouldn’t be worried. Looking at the weather forecast, we have decided that I’d be the third rider from the team to start. This is the most comfortable way. I don’t think I can win it but I’ll give the maximum and I can go well. It’s not too long. As soon as there’s a chance to take the yellow jersey, everyone likes to that, myself included. You never say no to the yellow jersey!”

PETER SAGAN: “WHO SAID I’M NOT GOING FOR THE GREEN JERSEY?”
Superstar Peter Sagan is once again at the Tour de France but for the first time with French squad TotalEnergies. “Finally I’m here at the Tour de France after some complications”, the Slovakian said. “I’m glad that tomorrow we can start. The Tour de Suisse confirmed that my preparation has gone well and I’m still able to win. I don’t think I’m doing that bad… It’s hard to predict what will happen in the race. All we can expect is three weeks of hard racing. I’ll try and win some stages and do my best. We are here with a very good team. It’s a new team for me. The atmosphere is very nice and very relaxed. It’s important to have some good time in this period as Covid makes life difficult for everyone. The first time trial will decide who will be able to hunt for the yellow jersey in the second and third stages. I will try to lose the less time possible. After that we’ll see… After stage 4, we’ll have a very interesting stage with cobbles. Who said I’m not targeting the green jersey anymore? Not me for sure…”

Marta Cavalli: «I have gained confidence in myself”

IN THE PELOTON ….

She is the revelation of the spring. Winner of the Amstel Gold Race by catching out the favourites before the red flame and of the Flèche Wallonne Femmes by being the strongest on the Mur de Huy, Marta Cavalli changed her profile during the Ardennes Classics. Now sure of her strength, the world n°6 confirmed this at the beginning of June with a new success at the top of the giant of Provence, the end of the Mont Ventoux Dénivelé Challenges. The 23-year-old Italian is now widely feared. She dreams of claiming the pink jersey in the Giro this summer and wants to support her teammate Cecilie Uttrup Ludwig in her quest for the general classification in the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift.

At the age of 20, Marta Cavalli made her mark by winning the Italian championships. Wearing the champion’s jersey, she started the following year to make a name for herself among the classics riders that matter: 2nd in the Flèche Brabançonne, 4th in the GP de Plouay. The newcomer to the FDJ-Nouvelle Aquitaine Futuroscope team, who had already made a name for herself in the spring classics in 2021, 8th in the Strade Bianche, 6th in the Tour of Flanders, ended the year the same way, finishing 9th in the first edition of Paris-Roubaix Femmes.

During your climb of the Ventoux, you were seen glancing at the Tom Simpson stele. What does this victory on these slopes laden with history mean to you?
It’s a new step up for women’s cycling. We entered a new dimension. It was a great feeling to be the first to arrive at the top of a cycling monument. There was a huge turn-out of people on the side of the road. It was a great day for us.

You were born in Cremona, in Lombardy. Is that where you grew up?
Yes, and I still live there! I only leave home for the races. I know it’s not the ideal place to train. It’s very flat, the winter is cold, it’s foggy… But I like it! I don’t fancy moving at the moment.

Are you still living with your parents?
Yes, we live together.

Like Alberto Bettiol, when he won the Tour of Flanders in 2019.
Of course, sometimes it’s nice to be independent. But it’s good not to be alone at home and to have someone to help you, especially when you travel all year round. But I’m still young. I’ll probably think about it in the future, but not for the time being!

Did cycling come into your life through your father?
Yes, but it also comes from my grandfather, who loved the sport. He used to manage a youth team, about 50 years ago, and my father raced as an amateur. From the time I was 2-3 years old, I went to see him race every Sunday with my mother. There were always bicycles around. I think that made the difference!

„I knew right away that this was the sport for me. And today it’s my profession!“

How old were you when you started?
I was 11 years old. I waited a bit! I started doing artistic gymnastics and volleyball, among other things. Eventually I told my parents that I wanted to have a go. There was a small youth team near Cremona. I knew right away that this was the sport for me. And today it’s my profession!

What motivated you to start at the age of 11?
Because it was an individual sport, maybe. I wanted to show all my determination and strength in an individual sport. In the end, I learned that it was not just about that. For example, at the Ventoux, it wasn’t just my victory, but that of the entire team.

What is your first memory of the Tour?
One of the very first is Chris Froome… running on foot on the Ventoux.

Did you think about this during your race?
Yes, a little! The day before, I looked for videos of the Ventoux, to try to memorize the turns, and I also came across this one.

When you were young, did you go and watch the Giro, or other races, from the roadside?
Yes, and still today, because I still love it! In 2013, the last stage of the women’s Giro was a time trial that finished in Cremona. I went there with my father and took a photo with Marianne Vos. I look at it sometimes and think: „I was young, I knew nothing about women’s cycling and now I’m racing with Marianne!“

Did you have an idol?
Yes, Mark Cavendish. Once the Giro sprints were over, I would get on my bike and try to imitate him on the road! Maybe that’s one of the reasons I got into cycling.

Was it a dream of yours to become a professional rider?
No, I didn’t really think about it. It came naturally, year after year. When I think back, I ask myself how I ended up doing it!

Was there another profession that you wanted to do?
No, not that I can recall.

What did you study?
I was a science student in high school. I went to university but it was hard to reconcile with cycling. I had to stop. But I think I’ll go back in the future, because I like studying. For now, I have decided to put all my energy into cycling.

What does it mean to you to know that you can beat anyone in a race as tough as the Flèche Wallonne Femmes?
A lot of things. Before, I was never sure of myself and this uncertainty used to drain me of a lot of energy. Now I know I can do it. And so do the people around me. They trust me. It’s a whole new dimension. But on the other hand, nothing has changed in my life. I’m still with the same team, I want to go in the same direction. I’ve just gained confidence in myself.

Does this change your outlook for the Tour de France? Is the plan still to support Cecilie Uttrup Ludwig or will you race for yourself?
No, it’s still the same game plan. I’ll go to the Giro for the general. And I will support Ludwig in the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift. We have had a look at the final three stages, I liked them! We will have our opportunities and I am sure it will be a great experience. The team is motivated, we have already won a lot. We will go to the Tour with determination.

What would be a successful Tour?
If we can wear the Maillot Jaune for just one day, that would be great. But we also want to make a splash, to put on a show for the people and cycling.

Track racing was your entry point to the top level. Do you still compete on it?
Not really. In training sometimes, because it’s good exercise and good for the head. But having decided to improve in the mountains, it wouldn’t be a good idea to combine road and track again. Before (until 2020) I raced a lot with the national team. The track allowed me to understand what kind of efforts are made for me. I have developed technical skills there. On the track, you are always flat out and you have to make decisions quickly. This helps me on the road. I am confident when the speed is high and riding downhill. It has helped me to become a complete cyclist.

In her fourth participation in the Flèche Wallonne Femmes, Marta Cavalli took a prestigious victory, ten days after winning the Amstel Gold Race. In the middle of a classics campaign in which she burst onto our screens, Marta Cavalli played a decisive role in the 2022 edition of Paris-Roubaix Femmes, finishing in fifth place.

Etappe fällt in diesem Jahr in Kopenhagen.
