Ben Turner siegt, Philipsen schlägt sich selbst

Im französischen Voiron gewann Ben Turner (Ineos) die 4. Etappe der Spanien-Rundfahrt 2025 im Massensprint. Der 26-jährige Brite setzte sich um ungefähr eine Radlänge vor Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin) durch. Der Sprint wurde für Philipsen von seinem Team lanciert. Dann ließ sich Philipsen aber von seinem letzten Anfahrer Edward Planckaert einbauen, als Turner aus 4. Position den Sprint eröffnete. Planckaert belegte selbst noch den 3. Platz vor Ethan Vernon (Israel), der im Sprint behindert wurde, was aber nicht geahndet wurde.

Das Rote Trikot des Gesamtführenden wanderte von Jonas Vingegaard (Visma) weiter zum Vortagessieger David Gaudu (Groupama). Schon zuvor waren beiden sekundengleich. Nur gab die Rangsumme aus den ersten 4 Etappen nun den Ausschlag zugunsten von Gaudu, der sich im Ziel in Voiron besser platzierte als Vingegaard.

2. Etappe: Alba – Puerto Limone – 157 Km

Der Top-Favorit auf den Gesamtsieg schlug bereits auf der verregneten 2. Vuelta-Etappe 2025 zu: Jonas Vingegaard (Visma) siegte tatsächlich im Massensprint der Bergfahrer! Der 28-jährige Däne brachte sein Vorderrad im letzten Moment vorbei an Giulio Ciccone (Lidl), der den Sprint sehr früh eröffnet hatte. Hinter den beiden kam David Gaudu (Groupama) im Nebel von Limone Piemonte auf den 3. Platz. Außerdem zeitgleich mit den Top-3 wurde Egan Bernal (Ineos) notiert.

Damit eroberte Vingegaard schon früh das Rote Trikot des Gesamtführenden. Dabei war der 2-fache Tour-de-France-Sieger noch 26 Kilometer vorm Ziel in einen Massensturz verwickelt und zu Boden gegangen. Aufgrund der 10, 6 und 4 Sekunden Bonifikation für die ersten 3 Plätze der Tageswertung setzte sich Vingegaard mit 4 Sekunden in Front vor Ciccone, 6 vor Bernal und 10 vor Bernal.
Die nachfolgenden Fahrer wurden zuüglich mit 2 Sekunden gewertet, weil hinter Bernal im Ziel eine entsprechende Lücke klaffte. Die Fahrer, die am flachen Vortag die Zeitgutschriften holten, spielte in dem bergauf führenden Finale erwartungsgemäß keine Rolle, so auch Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin), den Träger des Roten Trikots für nur einen Tag.

Das frühe Spitzenquartett des Tages bestand aus Glivar (Alpecin), Otruba (Intermarché), Slock (Lotto) und als Nachzügler Fernandez (Burgos). Slock sprang für den Sieg im Zwischensprint davon. Aus dem Hauptfeld heraus kam Vernon (Israel) auf den 5. Platz, konnte damit aber nicht Philipsen aus dem Grünen Trikot fahren.
Der zunächst leichte Regen im Piemont wurde auf den letzten 50 Kilometern bis tief ins Finale hinein immer stärker. Stürze folgten. Zunächst waren Martin (Groupama) und Bennett (Israel) einzeln betroffen, was für Martin das frühe Vuelta-Aus bedeutete.
26 Kilometer vorm Ziel kam dann Pidcock (Q36.5) auf dem glitschigen Untergrund ausgangs eines Kreisverkehrs zu Fall und verursachte eine Kettenreaktion. Mit dabei lagen Vingegaard und mehrere seiner Teamkollegen.
Im nicht allzu steilen Schlussanstieg wurde Slock 6 Kilometer als letzter der 4 Ausreißer gestellt. Von den Tagesfavoriten zeigten sich Pidcock und Ciccone in den ersten Positionen. Als Ciccone eröffnete, verhungerte Pidcock sogleich und belegte nur den 10. Platz. Stattdessen drehte Vingegaard auf, und die Ziellinie kam für Ciccone wenige Momente zu spät.

3. Etappe: San Maurizio Canavese – Ceres – 139 Km

Gaudu bezwingt Pedersen im Kurvensprint

David Gaudu (Groupama) gewann die 3. Etappe der Spanien-Rundfahrt 2025, deren letzte mit Ziel in Italien, im Bergaufsprint von Ceres. Der Franzose verwies die beiden Top-Stars Mads Pedersen (Lidl) und Jonas Vingegaard (Visma) auf die Plätze. Dabei nutzte Gaudu eine Spitzkehre weniger als 100 Meter vorm Ziel, Pedersen durch ein lässiges Überholmanöver so richtig alt aussehen zu lassen.
Giulio Ciccone hatte den Sprint so angefahren, dass sein Teamkollege Pedersen an 1. Position in die Schlusskurve ging, vor Vingegaard und Gaudu. Pedersen steuerte die Kurve von ganz außen an, um möglichst die Ideallinie zu treffen. Dies misslang jedoch gründlich. Gaudu fand innen die viel bessere Linie und zog an Vingegaard und Pedersen vorbei. Ciccone belegte noch den 4. Platz.

Aufgrund der Zeitbonifikationen zog Gaudu im Gesamtklassement mit dem Führenden Vingegaard gleich. Vingegaard behielt aber das Rote Trikot wegen der geringegen Rangsumme aus den bisherigen 3 Zielankünften.

Als Ausreißer des Tages betätigten sich Quinn (EF), Gamper (Jayco), Verre (Arkéa) und van Boven (Intermarché). 71 Kilometer vorm Ziel lösten sich Quinn und Verre an einen 16-%-Anstieg – bei 2 Minuten Vorsprung vorm Hauptfeld. Am Bergpreis holte sich Verre die Punkte und damit auch offiziell das Bergtrikot zurück, das er auf der 3. Etappe nur stellvertretend für Vingegaard getragen hatte.
Stellvertretend ist das Stichwort. Denn hinter den 2 verbliebenen Ausreißern und dem vorsorglich enteilten Pedersen sprintete Vingegaard beim Zwischensprint auf den 4. Platz, vorbei an Ciccone ähnlich wie beim Zielsprint des Vortages. Damit offenbarte Vingegaard überraschende Ambitionen in Sachen Punktewertung. Der will wohl bei der Vuelta 2025 ganz groß abräumen! Für Vingegaard trägt auf der 4. Etappe Ciccone stellvertretend das Grüne Trikot.

Innerhalb der letzten 40 Kilometer war Quinn dann als alleiniger Spitzenreiter vorne unterwegs, und 20 Kilometer vorm Ziel wurde er gestellt. Pedersens Team hatte den Tag über am meisten investiert. Doch es läuft noch nicht so wie beim Giro, als Pedersen 4 Etappensiege samt Punktewertung mit nach Hause nahm. Schon beim Massensprint zum Auftakt sprang nur ein enttäuschender 16. Platz heraus. Für Gaudu indes war es bereits der 3. Etappensieg innerhalb einer Spanien-Rundfahrt.

Decked in their black-and-yellow livery, the Visma | Lease a Bike armada went at full sail to put their captain, Olav Kooij, on a boarding plank to victory on the boulevard hugging the coast of the Sea of Oman. Not one to disappoint his crewmates, the 23-year-old Dutchman snatched the booty at Bimmah Sink Hole, outfencing Pavel Bittner (Picnic PostNL) and Erlend Blikra (Uno-X Mobility) in a bunch sprint to claim the opening stage of the fourteenth Tour of Oman and pull on the inaugural red jersey.

The 2024 Giro d’Italia stage winner lived up to his status as the man to beat on Saturday. This is his first triumph of the season, his maiden win in Oman —where he is racing for the first time— and his 37th career victory. Five men broke away as soon as the flag dropped and added some excitement to the 177.7-kilometre opener. The blistering sun and the mostly unfavourable winds prevented their advantage from increasing much beyond five minutes. The last two survivors of the breakaway, Rodrigo Álvarez (Burgos-Burpellet BH) and the leader of the combativity standings, Kane Richards (Roojai Insurance) were caught with 25 kilometres to go, not long after David Gaudu (Groupama–FDJ) took third place and a bonus second at the second intermediate sprint.

From the first few pedal strokes at Al Rustaq Fort, which provided the scenic backdrop to the start, the peloton had to play whack-a-mole with a horde of breakaway specialists undaunted by the 203 kilometres of stage 2 —the longest of the Tour of Oman.
The five men in the early breakaway pushed their advantage to five minutes at the foot of Bousher Al Amerat, where the going got tough. Louis Vervaeke (Soudal Quick-Step) and Mikel Azparren (Q36.5 Pro Cycling Team) managed to bridge the gap near the halfway point.
The Belgian and the Spaniard soon upped the pace with Magnus Kulset (Uno-X Mobility) in tow. Although the new three-man lead group still enjoyed a five-minute buffer going into the last 30 kilometres, it melted to just over a minute with 10 kilometres to go, when Vervaeke went for broke. The 31-year-old puncheur, a reliable domestique ever since he turned neo-pro, grabbed his maiden pro win at the end of a performance full of panache and suspense, crossing the finish line with just two seconds to spare over the peloton in a crash-marred finale. Vervaeke triumphed atop the Yitti Hills, beating his teammate Valentin Paret-Peintre and Sean Flynn (Picnic PostNL) and vaulting into the overall lead.

The fourteenth edition of the Tour of Oman tackled the first of its two summit finishes in Monday’s 180.8-kilometre stage 3. Legs tingling in anticipation of their first real test of the season, the climbers went head to head on Eastern Mountain (1,016 masl), under the gaze of Jabal Sham, the highest peak in the Sultanate (3,018 masl). David Gaudu (Groupama–FDJ) proved strongest in the long-awaited duel that pitted him against the reigning champion, Adam Yates (UAE Team Emirates – XRG). After firing off multiple attacks within the last few hundred metres of the final ascent (4.8 km at 8.5%), the Breton outsprinted the British rider by 1 second, with Damien Howson (Q36.5 Pro Cycling Team) third at five seconds. Gaudu opened his account for the season and wrested the leader’s red jersey from Louis Vervaeke (Soudal Quick-Step), who was dropped with three kilometres to go after going into the red for his teammate Valentin Paret-Peintre, fourth at 13 seconds. Gaudu has 6 seconds in hand over Yates and 12 over Howson going into the last two stages.

In the wake of the first summit finish, the pancake-flat course of stage 4 of the Tour of Oman was a gift-wrapped opportunity for the sprinters, who did not let it go to waste. After completing a winding run through ochre-hued mountains and catching the last survivor of the three-man breakaway —Kongphob Thimachai (Roojai Insurance)— 13 kilometres from the line, the fast men revved up for a drag race to the finish line outside the Convention and Exhibition Centre in Muscat. Olav Kooij (Team Visma | Lease a Bike) was once again the speediest of the lot, charging to his second victory in the race three days after bagging stage 1 in another bunch sprint. The Dutchman outgunned Giacomo Nizzolo (Q36.5 Pro Cycling Team) and Orluis Aular (Movistar Team), at the top of the false flat in the final kilometre. David Gaudu (Groupama-FDJ) held on to the red jersey, still with 6 seconds to spare over Adam Yates (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) on the eve of the finale, where the race will come to a head on Green Mountain.

The fourteenth Tour of Oman came to a head today on the torturous slopes of Jebel Akhdar (5.7 km at 10.5%), the iconic climb of the Tour of Oman, also known as Green Mountain. David Gaudu (Groupama–FDJ), who had earlier taken the stage win and the overall lead on Eastern Mountain, fought gallantly to defend his red jersey, but the Breton finally cracked when Adam Yates (UAE Team Emirates XRG) upped the pace for the second time with 700 metres to go. The British rider finished stage 5 a couple of seconds behind the Frenchman Valentin Paret-Peintre, who opened his account with Soudal Quick-Step with a prestigious triumph on Green Mountain. This was enough to propel Yates to his second consecutive overall victory in the Tour of Oman. The man from Haute-Savoie took second place at 6 seconds, while Gaudu rounded out the final podium at 39.

Patrick Konrad rückt nach der ersten Bergprüfung beim Critérium du Dauphiné auf Rang vier der Gesamtwertung vor

Der dritte Tagesabschnitt des Critérium du Dauphiné führte über 169km von Saint-Paulien nach Chastreix-Sancy und versprach mit einer 6,2km langen Bergankunft ein erster Test im Kampf um die Gesamtwertung zu sein. Eine frühe Ausreißergruppe wurde am Beginn des letzten Anstiegs vom Hauptfeld gestellt. Trotz einiger Attacken kam eine Gruppe von knapp 30 Fahrer geschlossen zum Ziel und die Etappe wurde letztlich im Sprint entschieden. Den Sieg am Fuße der Skistation von Chastreix holte sich D. Gaudu. Patrick Konrad und Wilco Kelderman kamen beide mit der ersten Gruppe über die Ziellinie, waren aber im Sprint um den Tagessieg etwas blockiert und nicht ideal positioniert. In der Gesamtwertung verbesserte sich Patrick Konrad um 15 Positionen und liegt vor dem morgigen Zeitfahren auf Rang vier.

„Es war ein hektischer und nervöser Tag mit viel Wind und engen, kurvigen Straßen. Am letzten Anstieg habe ich mich gut gefühlt, war aber im Finale etwas eingeklemmt und nicht gut genug positioniert, um noch um den Etappensieg zu sprinten. In der Gesamtwertung konnte ich mich auf Platz vier verbessern, womit ich auf jeden Fall zufrieden bin heute. Wout van Aert and Jumbo-Visma thought they had done everything right to claim victory at the Chastreix-Sancy ski resort, as the Belgian star raised his arms to celebrate success atop the final climb… only to see David Gaudu (Groupama-FDJ) jump ahead of him right on the finish line of stage 3 of the Critérium du Dauphiné 2022! The French climber bounces back to victory after his Spring ambitions were affected by crashes and illness.

Second ahead of Victor Lafay (Cofidis), Van Aert claims back the yellow and blue jersey he had lost on stage 2 to Alexis Vuillermoz (TotalEnergies), who couldn’t keep up in the final 2.5km of ascent. His teammates and Van Aert’s had done most of the work to reel in a strong team attack by Pierre Rolland’s B&B Hotels-KTM.

The 148 riders who finished stage 2 in Brives-Charensac are back in action for the start from Saint)Paulien at midday. Four attackers get on the move from the start: Omer Goldstein (Israel Premier Tech), Jonas Wilsly (Uno-X), Thomas Champion (Cofidis) and Sebastian Schönberger (B&B Hotels-KTM). Alexis Vuillermoz’s TotalEnergies quickly react and the gap is only up to 2’30’’ when Goldstein drops back to the bunch, after 20km of racing.
B&B Hotels-KTM give a new life to the battle for the breakaway with a team attack on the first ascent of the day, the cat-3 Côte de Saint-Vert. Pierre Rolland, leader of the KOM standings, attacks with Alexis Gougeard and Miguel Heidemann. At the summit (km 44.7), the trio trail by 3’, and the peloton are 1’30’’ further behind.

B&B Hotels-KTM vs TotalEnergies and Jumbo-Visma
An intense chase ensues, until Rolland, Gougeard and Heidemann join the front of the race at km 64. Behind them, the peloton also ride at a high pace, and the gap is stable around 2’30’’ on the valley leading to the final uphill challenges of the day.
As the race enters the last 50km and the road rises, Heidemann, Gougeard and Champion are dropped one by one. Schönberger sets the pace and Rolland goes first atop the cat-4 Côte de Besse-en-Chandesse (km 136.4).
Jumbo-Visma up the ante inside the last 30km, and the gap drops down to 1’15’’ into the last 20km. With 10km to go, the attackers only lead by 35’’. They are caught on the first slopes of the final ascent of the day, the climb to Chastreix-Sancy. Wilsly is the last attacker to be reeled in, inside the last 5km.

Gaudu edges Van Aert despite Roglic and Vingegaard’s work

Tsgabu Grmay (BikeExchange-Jayco) accelerates with 3.5km to go, Rémi Cavagna (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl) immediately counter-attacks, and Ben O’Connor (AG2R-Citroën) also has a go 1.5km away from the finish, but Jonas Vingegaard and Primoz Roglic control every move to try and lead Van Aert to a second stage win in three days, while Alexis Vuillermoz (TotalEnergies) can’t keep up with the high pace and is dropped with 2.5km to go.
The Belgian seems to be in a prime position to sprint to victory, despite struggling a bit around the 1km to go mark. He powers ahead of everyone, but he raises his arms just before the line… By his right side, Gaudu makes the most of the situation to take his first Critérium du Dauphiné stage win, ahead of Van Aert and Victor Lafay.

„I was a bit far behind for the final stretch, I thought I couldn’t do it. Then Kevin Geniets arrived and I followed his wheel. I felt I had strength, I saw Van Aert was going well but I told myself I was gonna get him. And I did it. I’m moved because I had been waiting for a victory like that since the start of the year. I’ve left the doubts behind me, after all the struggles at the beginning of the year. The legs felt good on the climb, that’s good for what’s coming next, especially this week-end.“

La Vuelta – Etappe 17

The final mountain stage of La Vuelta 20 has crowned David Gaudu (Groupama-FDJ), who claimed his second stage win atop the climb to the Alto de La Covatilla, and Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma), who managed to save La Roja despite a powerful attack from Richard Carapaz (Ineos Grenadiers). The Frenchman made his way to a solo victory after spending the whole day at the front of the race, dropping all his breakaway companions on the last slopes. Roglic lost 21’’ to Carapaz but he still leads the GC with a 24’’ gap on the eve of the final stage to Madrid. The Slovenian champion is set to dominate the overall standings for the second year in a row.
The final climbing challenges of La Vuelta 20 inspire many attackers. 34 riders get away after 19km of battle. Among them, David de la Cruz is the best classified on GC (10th, +9’29’’) and he enjoys the support of three UAE Team Emirates riders: Rui Costa, Sergio Henao and Ivo Oliveira. Groupama-FDJ’s David Gaudu, already winner at La Farrapona, is another GC threat (11th, +10’51’’).
Ion Izagirre (Astana) also chases his second stage win in La Vuelta 20, while Pascal Ackermann (Bora-Hansgrohe) rides at the front on some unfriendly terrain for his sprinting abilities. Guillaume Martin (Cofidis) shows his polka-dot jersey again at the front, with the support of Victor Lafay and José Herrada. Team Sunweb also manage to put three riders in the breakaway: Mark Donovan, Michael Storer and Jasha Sütterlin.
Movistar put pressure on Roglic
UAE and Groupama-FDJ riders drive the breakaway to open a maximum gap of 4’07’’ at km 68. Primoz Roglic’s Jumbo-Visma set the pace in the bunch over the first ascents of the day, until Movistar take over with 61km to go.
The Spanish team put the hammer down and immediately create splits in the bunch. Richard Carapaz (Ineos Grenadiers) is among the riders off the back but he quickly returns with the help of one teammate. Movistar maintain a hard pace over the Alto de Peñacaballera and the gap is down to 2’17’’ at the bottom of the penultimate climb of the day, the Alto de la Garganta.
Soler on the move
Marc Soler (Movistar) accelerates 31km away from the line. Imanol Erviti, who was part of the breakaway, waits for him. They trail by 30’’ at the summit (26.2km to go). The GC group, led by Jumbo-Visma, is 1’ further behind. Soler eventually bridges the gap with 19km to go. The peloton then trail by 2’15’’.
Gino Mäder (NTT), Mark Donovan and Ion Izagirre enjoy a cobbled uphill section to attack their breakaway companions 18km away from the line. They reach the bottom of the final climb to La Covatilla (11.4km, 7.1%) with a 40’’ lead while the gap to the bunch is up to 4 minutes.
All in for Gaudu and Carapaz
Ion Izagirre accelerates twice, with 7km to go and 1km later to drop his two companions but David Gaudu gets back to him 4.5km away from the summit and immediately attacks to solo away to his second stage victory.
Hugh Carthy (EF Pro Cycling) opens up the GC battle inside the last 5km. Richard Carapaz (Ineos Grenadiers) goes with 3.5km and nobody can follow his powerful attack. Primoz Roglic enjoys the support of breakaway members Lennard Hofstede (Jumbo-Visma) and Marc Soler to limit his losses and save La Roja for 24’’.

Felix Großschartner verteidigt Top-10 Platzierung in der Gesamtwertung auf der letzten Bergetappe der Vuelta

Der Vorschlusstag der Vuelta, der mit einer Bergankunft endete, sorgte heute noch einmal für leichte Veränderungen in der Gesamtwertung. Bei Rennkilometer 30 begann schon die bergige Achterbahnfahrt mit fünf klassifizierten Anstiegen bis hinauf zum Alto de Covatilla, einem Hors Kategorie-Anstieg. Es gelang Pascal Ackermann und Michael Schwarzmann zunächst in eine 34-Mann starke Fluchtgruppe zu kommen, die sich zwischenzeitlich bis auf 4 Minuten vom Feld absetzen konnte. In den letzten Anstiegen wurden immer mehr abgehängte Fahrer aus der Ausreißergruppe vom verkleinerten Peloton eingeholt. Mit 15 km bis zum Ziel attackierte dann ein Trio aus der verbleibenden Spitzengruppe und konnte einen kleinen Vorsprung herausfahren. Im letzten Anstieg, rund 10 km vor dem Ziel, erlitt Felix Großschartner leider einen Defekt, konnte jedoch wenig später wieder zum Feld aufschließen. Zu diesem Zeitpunkt übernahm BORA – hansgrohe im Feld die Führungsarbeit, aber mit 7 km zum Ziel betrug der Abstand zur Spitze immer noch 3:45 Minuten. Wenig später griff D. Gaudu aus der dezimierten Verfolgergruppe an und konnte zur führenden Gruppe aufschließen. Dahinter in der Favoritengruppe, in der sich auch Felix Großschartner befand, setzte Ide Schelling zeitweise die Pace um seinen Teamkollegen im Kampf um das Gesamtklassement zu unterstützen. Nach 178 gefahrenen Kilometern holte Gaudu, der sich zwischenzeitlich an die Spitze setzen konnte, letztlich den Etappensieg. Am Ende einer schweren Vuelta-Etappe überquerte Felix die Ziellinie auf dem 21. Platz und belegte damit den 9. Gesamtrang.

„Ich bin etwas enttäuscht, dass wir vorne so eine große Gruppe hatten. Ich hatte dann noch einen Defekt im letzten Berg und es hat mich viel Energie gekostet danach wieder den Anschluss zu finden. Ich habe zwei Plätze in der Gesamtwertung verloren, aber zum Schluss bin ich trotzdem noch in der Top-10 und darauf kann ich stolz sein.“ – Felix Großschartner
„Das Ziel war heute natürlich, dass wir Felix mit der gesamten Mannschaft unterstützen wollten. Wir haben uns von Anfang an darauf konzentriert, dass keine allzu große Gruppe geht. Besonders wollten wir darauf achten, dass Vlasov auch nicht in die Gruppe kommt, denn er lag derzeitig auf dem 9. Platz in der Gesamtwertung. Es war dann ein sehr schneller Start, und letztlich ist es einer großen Gruppe gelungen sich abzusetzen. Michael Schwarzmann und Pascal Ackermann waren mit dabei, aber auch Gaudu und De la Cruz, die im Gesamtklassement gefährlich waren. Wir versuchen zu reagieren, konnten aber die Lücke nicht mehr schließen, und haben uns dann bemüht, Felix immer in einer gute Position zu halten. Wir hatten mit Pascal und Schwarzi zwei Fahrer vorne, die nach dem ersten Berg noch da waren, wenn irgendwas gewesen wäre und auf Felix warten konnten, um ihm zu helfen. Die anderen haben ihr Bestes gegeben und ihn so gut wie möglich unterstützt. Sie sind heute ein ganz starkes Rennen gefahren und konnten den ganzen Tag bei Felix bleiben. Kurz vor dem letzten Anstieg hatte Felix leider einen Reifenschaden und musste das Fahrrad wechseln, was auch viel Kraft gekostet hat. Gaudu und De la Cruz sind heute sehr stark gefahren und konnten Felix in der Gesamtwertung überholen. Am Ende liegt er auf dem 9. Platz, was eine ganz starke Leistung ist. Wir sind auf eine Art enttäuscht, dass es nicht zur Verteidigung des 7. Platz gereicht hat, aber auf der anderen Seite sind wir glücklich, dass eine Platzierung unter den ersten 10 für ihn am Ende als Ergebnis steht. Vielen Dank an die gesamte Mannschaft, die wirklich alles auf dieser Rundfahrt gegeben hat. Morgen ist der letzte Tag, und dort gibt es sicherlich nochmals eine Sprintentscheidung. La Vuelta – Etappe 11

David Gaudu (Groupama-FDJ) is the first winner of a gruelling week-end of climbing in the Asturias. The young Frenchman won stage 11 of La Vuelta 2020 atop the Alto de la Farrapona ahead of his breakaway companion Marc Soler (Movistar), who gained 4 places in the overall standings thanks to a long range attack. In the favourites group, Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) and Richard Carapaz (Ineos Grenadiers) were unable to open differences. They are still tied ahead of the infamous climb of the Angliru on Sunday!
The uphill start from Villaviciosa opens a huge battle for the breakaway. Tim Wellens (Lotto Soudal) leads the first attempt over the Alto de la Campa, where he takes 3 KOM points. The battle keeps going on the valley, with 11 riders joining Wellens at the front and Cofidis driving the bunch to put Guillaume Martin in a position to defend his polka-dot jersey with four cat-1 climbs ahead of them. The gap is only up to 45’’ at the bottom of the Alto de la Colladona (km 49).
Soler on the move
Wellens tries to push his avantage but the peloton catches him on the climb. Five attackers get away: Niklas Eg (Trek-Segafredo), Mark Donovan, Michael Storer (Sunweb), Bruno Armirail (Groupama-FDJ) and Nelson Oliveira (Movistar). Guillaume Martin (Cofidis) bridges the gap at the summit. And tow more riders join the front group on the downhill: David Gaudu (Groupama-FDJ) and Tim Wellens again.
Jumbo-Visma and Ineos Grenadiers work together to control the gap under 2 minutes ahead of the third climb of the day, Alto de la Cobertoria (summit at km 95.2). Marc Soler (Movistar) makes the most of the ascent to join the early attackers. Tim Wellens (Lotto Soudal) can’t keep up with the leaders’ pace. Guillaume Martin collects the 10 KOM points at the summit and Wellens is eventually reeled in by the bunch on the following downhill, with 61km to go, while the attackers push their advantage over 3’.
Martin defends the polka dots, Soler chases La Roja
The gap hits a maximum of 3’20’’ at km 122, ahead of the Puerto de San Lorenzo. Jumbo-Visma react to contain Marc Soler’s threat – the Spanish all-rounder only trails by 3’52’’ in the overall standings. The gap is down to 2’20’’ when Guillaume Martin takes 10 more KOM points. Niklas Eg is dropped ahead of the summit.
The gap increases again on the downhill towards La Farrapona: 3’08’’ at the bottom of the final climb (16.5km at 6.2%). Bruno Armirail and Nelson Oliveira are quickly dropped after they helped their breakaway companions for the whole stage. Marc Soler accelerates 5km away from the summit and David Gaudu is the only attacker able to follow him.
Roglic and Carapaz remain tied
The two attackers work together all the way to the final 200m, where Gaudu makes the most of his punchy abilities to take his first Grand Tour stage victory. He is also the first Breton rider to win a La Vuelta stage since Warren Barguil took his first Grand Tour wins in 2013.
Jumbo-Visma control the ascent for Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma). Aleksandr Vlasov (Astana) attacks from the GC group inside the last 2km. And Dan Martin (Israel Start-Up Nation) accelerates in the final kilometre. Enric Mas (Movistar), Richard Carapaz and Primoz Roglic follow him. Hugh Carthy (EF Pro Cycling) lose 7’’ on the line.

Starke Performance von Felix Großschartner auf schwerer Bergetappe der Vuelta a España

Der bisher härteste Renntag der Vuelta führte heute über 170 km von der Hafenstadt Villaviciosa ins asturische Hochgebirge im Nordwesten Spaniens. Mit fünf kategorisierten Anstiegen, davon vier der 1. Kategorie und einer schwierigen Bergankunft auf dem Gipfel des Alto de la Farrapona waren die Bergfahrer heute wieder gefragt. Die ersten Attacken wurden vom Feld schnell vereitelt bis sich dann 12 Fahrer nach 40 km erfolgreich absetzen konnten. Im zweiten Anstieg zerfiel die führende Gruppe und einige Fahrer setzten sich vorne ab, während im Peloton Jumbo-Visma das Rennen kontrollierte. Mit dem Beginn des Puerto de San Lorenzo, rund 44 km vor dem Ziel, begann das Ausscheidungsfahren als einige Klassementfahrer schon hier in Schwierigkeiten gerieten. Felix Großschartner zeigte sich stark in der Favoritengruppe um P. Roglič, die mit 10 km zum Ziel auf 20 Fahrer geschrumpft war. Im härtesten Teil des Schlussanstiegs attackierten D. Gaudu und M. Soler aus der 5-Mann Spitzengruppe und machten letztlich den Sieg unter sich aus. Mit noch 300 m vor dem Ziel war die Favoritengruppe mit Felix noch zusammen. Am Ende sprintete der Österreicher rund eine Minute nach dem Tagessieger D. Gaudu auf dem 15. Platz ins Ziel und liegt damit jetzt auf dem 7. Platz in der Gesamtwertung.

„Es war sehr hart von Anfang an. Ich war Teil einer sehr starken Gruppe und fühlte mich heute ganz gut. Ich konnte mit den Besten mithalten und blicke zuversichtlich auf die noch kommenden Bergetappen. Ich bin Siebter in der Gesamtwertung und glaube, dass ich mit meinen bisherigen Leistungen zufrieden sein kann. Wir nehmen jeden Tag wie er kommt und wir werden weiterkämpfen.“ – Felix Großschartner

Marc Madiot, General Manager des Groupama-FDJ Cycling Teams, freut sich, heute die Verlängerung von David Gaudus Vertrag für zwei weitere Jahre bis zum Ende der Saison 2020 bekannt zu geben.

David Gaudu: Es ist mir eine große Freude, dass ich mich für zwei weitere Spielzeiten mit Groupama-FDJ anmelden darf. Das Projekt, dass das Team anbietet, ist ein Projekt, das ich sehr mag, mit meiner Rolle auf den Etappenrennen und bald auf den Grand Tours. Mein erstes Jahr im Profi-Feld war sehr erfolgreich, ich gewann an der Tour de l’Ain und mit Groupama, die 2018 an der Seite von FDJ ankam, fühle ich eine echte kollektive Dynamik, die mich motiviert. Ich habe dieses Jahr große Ziele und freue mich darauf, zu sehen, was als nächstes kommt. “
