A bunched sprint was expect at the end of stage 1 and that’s exactly what happened on the opening day of the AlUla Tour. In a hectic final straight with a lot of candidates to victory, Casper Van Uden (Team DSM-Firmenich PostNL) proved to be the fastest. The young Dutchman only just captures his first major success by beating compatriot Dylan Groenewegen (Team Jayco AlUla) and Belgium’s Tim Merlier (Soudal Quickstep). Thanks to his victory, Van Uden takes command of the general classification and will be wearing the green jersey for tomorrow’s stage 2.

Milesi, from the rainbow to La Roja

From the world championships to La Vuelta, Lorenzo Milesi is enjoying a formidable August. The Italian youngster, winner of the rainbow jersey in the Under 23 individual time trial, is the first leader of the 78th edition of the Spanish Grand Tour after he led Team DSM-Firmenich to victory in the opening team time-trial. The German squad went early, as thunder roared over Barcelona, and nobody ever managed to overthrow them. Movistar came the closest, only trailing by half a second, while Remco Evenepoel’s Soudal Quick-Step lost 6’’ and Jumbo-Visma 32’’. La Vuelta 23 begins with a spectacular surprise!

The 78th edition of La Vuelta starts from Barcelona with a 14.8km team time trial visiting some of the most iconic areas of the city. The riders will start from the coast, on the Somorrostro beach, and ride through the city, passing by iconic monuments such as the Sagrada Familia, until the finish on the avenue Reina Maria Cristina, next to Plaza de España.

DSM-Firmenich set the reference in the rain

The first team to start is Caja Rural Seguros RGA, at 18:55, followed by DSM-Firmenich 4 minutes later, and then Lidl-Trek at 19:03. They do so under a grey sky, after a few sunny and hot days in Barcelona. The thunder roars and the rain wets the roads.
In these conditions, DSM-Firmenich set the first strong reference: 17’30’’ to cover the 14.8km with a powerhouse such as Lorenzo Milesi, the U23 ITT world champion crowned a couple of weeks ago in Scotland.

A very wet final kilometre
Arkea-Samsic have a much different experience when Hugo Hofstetter’s wheels slip in the final kilometres, taking down his leader Kevin Vauquelin, who drops over a minute. Bahrain Victorious (+10’’), EF Education-EasyPost (+6’’) and then Groupama-FDJ (+6’’) are more successful but DSM-Firmenich hold on to the best time.

The final kilometre is particularly wet, which also leads to crashes for Maurice Ballerstedt (Alpecin-Deceuninck) and Eddie Dunbar (Jayco-AlUla). Laurens De Plus goes down earlier in the race and Ineos Grenadiers finish with a time of 17’50’’ (+20’’).

Movistar come agonisingly close
Jumbo-Visma also struggle, trailing by 28’’ after 9.6km and eventually dropping 32’’ on the line. Enric Mas’ Movistar come much closer, only dropping half a second on the line! But when Remco Evenepoel’s Soudal Quick-Step finish with a gap of 6’’, DSM-Firmenich seal the win and Lorenzo Milesi takes La Roja.

Astana Qazaqstan’s festival in Hammerfest

Grim weather conditions, with bouts of rain and strong winds, were the main players in the second stage of the 10th edition of the Arctic Race of Norway. Uno-X Pro Cycling Team did its best to tear the race apart by launching echelons, yet the pack got back together with 40 kilometres to go and it all came down to an uphill sprint in Hammerfest. It was there that Astana Qazaqstan executed a perfectly timed sprint to score a one-two with Italian riders Michele Gazzoli and Christian Scaroni, while Cofidis’ Jonathan Lastra completed the stage podium. The Midnight Sun jersey that distinguishes the GC leader is now on the shoulders of Noah Hobbs (Groupama-FDJ Continental), who was fast and wise enough to claim five bonus seconds in the intermediate sprints spread over the stage in order to dethrone Team dsm-firmenich’s Alberto Dainese.

106 riders took the start in second stage of the 2023 Arctic Race of Norway, held between Alta and Hammerfest over 153,4 kilometres, at 14:25. As the red flag dropped, six riders went on the attack to create the day’s first breakaway: Peder Antoni Gravas (Norwegian National Team), Gianmarco Garofoli (Astana Qazaqstan), Johan Ravnoy (Team Coop-Repsol), Camilo Gomez (Trinity Racing Team), Ronan Augé (Groupama-FDJ Continental) and Vincent van Hemelen (Flanders-Baloise). The latter was sporting the Peacock jersey and immediately took on the duty of collecting points for the Mountains classification in order to keep it for another day, cresting in first position both the Raipas Summit (KOM, km 9,7) and the Sarves Summit (Super KOM, km 28,2). Meanwhile, Augé led the way through Milstrand (IS, km 19,7).

Wind creates chaos

Van Hemelen was second to Ravnoy atop the Stokkedalen Summit (KOM, km 42,4), where the breakaway recorded a gap of 4’10” on its favor over the peloton. Said gap would immediately drop down to nothing as racing sped up behind due to the possibility of echelons that did indeed materialize as the riders hit a long, straight stretch of road with 92 kilometres to go. A group of 30 riders went clear in a skirmish led by Uno-X and and echoed by Jayco-AlUla and Team dsm-firmenich, reeling in the break 10 kilometres later. A change of the direction of the course meant the sidewind turned into headwind, thus enabling several groups to bridge back to the head of the race with 40 kilometres left to race, just ahead of the intermediate sprint in Kvalsund (IS, km 118,2) on which Andre Drege (Coop-Repsol) took three bonus seconds ahead of Noah Hobbs (Groupama-FDJ Continental) and Kevin Vermaerke (Team dsm-firmenich), who in turn collected 2” and 1”.

Hobbs takes the Midnight Sun jersey

The peloton was held back by the wind in the final kilometres. Hobbs came first across Akkarfjord (IS, km 142,3), claiming three bonus seconds that would enable him to become GC leader after the stage, as most of the other riders bid their time waiting for the uphill finish in Hammerfest. The road started to rise with 1,7 kilometres to go. Groupama-FDJ Continental, Jayco-AlUla and Flanders-Baloise drove the run in to the finish before Astana Qazaqstan took the win by storm, with Christian Scaroni leading out Michele Gazzoli for an outstanding one-two.

Sprint Showdown auf der 17. Etappe des Giro d’Italia in Caorle

Bevor es morgen wieder in die Berge geht, bot die 197 km lange 17. Etappe eine Verschnaufpause für die GC-Fahrer und für die Sprinter die vorletzte Chance auf einen Sieg. Nach dem Start in Pergine Valsugana bildete sich eine vierköpfige Fluchtgruppe, die das Rennen bis 5 km vor dem Ziel anführte. Die Favoriten auf den Gesamtsieg hielten sich wie erwartet zurück und so kam es auf der 700 m langen Zielgerade in Caorle zu einem Massensprint. Den Tagessieg holte sich A. Dainese, während Lennard Kämna die Ziellinie auf dem 16. Platz überquerte und damit seinen 6. Rang in der Gesamtwertung beibehält. Der bestplatzierte BORA – hansgrohe Fahrer heute war Nico Denz, der den 14. Platz errang.

„Ich hatte einen größeren Fight um die Spitzengruppe erwartet, aber die Sprinterteams haben sich eigentlich direkt vorne einsortiert und gezeigt, dass sie unbedingt kontrollieren wollten. Einige Teams, von denen ich erwartet hätte, dass sie vielleicht attackieren würden wie Trek-Segafredo oder Israel Premier Tech, haben sich gar nicht bewegt. Darum bin ich auch sitzen geblieben, denn das war heute ein hoffnungsloses Unterfangen. Dann sind wir alle bei Lenni geblieben, um ihn sicher durch dieses türkische Finale ins Ziel zu bringen.“ – Nico Denz

„Das war heute ein Tag zum Luftholen. Ich glaube, jeder von den angeschlagenen Fahrern und auch den Klassementfahrern war froh, so einen Tag zu haben, weil wir alle wissen, was in den nächsten drei Tage auf uns zukommt. Von daher war das heute relativ entspannt bis aufs Finale. Wir waren darauf vorbereitet, jemand in die Spitzengruppe zu schicken, da wir hier ohne Sprinter antreten, aber das hatte heute keinen Sinn. Wir sind durch den Tag ohne Probleme gekommen. Die Jungs sind alle auf einem guten Weg, nach Höhen und Tiefen wieder gesund zu werden. BORA – hansgrohe attackiert auf der achten Etappe des Giro: Kämna und Vlasov verlieren am Ende aber Zeit

Die 207 km lange Strecke zwischen Terni und Fossombrone führte das Fahrerfeld heute zurück an die Adriaküste. Während die ersten 150 Kilometer kaum Schwierigkeiten bereithielten, gab es drei kniffelige Anstiege auf einer anspruchsvollen Schlussrunde um den Zielort. Nach mehreren erfolglosen Ausreißversuchen konnte sich eine 12-Mann starke Gruppe nach rund 75 km formieren. Die entscheidende Phase der Etappe wurde im Cappuccini-Anstieg eingeläutet, als B. Healy aus der Spitzengruppe heraus attackierte. Der Ire fuhr schnell einen Vorsprung von mehr als einer Minute heraus und gewann am Ende ungefährdet. Vor dem zweiten Anstieg zum Cappuccini setzte sich BORA – hansgrohe mit Konrad und Jungels an die Spitze des Feldes und lancierte einen Angriff von Lennard Kämna. Damit wurde auch der Schlagabtausch der Favoriten eröffnet. Den Konter von Roglic, der sich in der Folge mit Thomas und Geoghegan Hart vom Rest der Favoriten absetzte, konnte Lennard aber nicht mitgehen. Kämna erreichte am Ende das Ziel zeitgleich mit Aleksandr Vlasov etwa 30 Sekunden hinter Roglic. Die beiden BORA – hansgrohe Leader bleiben damit dennoch in den Top Ten der Gesamtwertung.

„Ich war am Ende vielleicht ein wenig übermotiviert. Ich habe mich wirklich gut gefühlt und wollte etwas versuchen. Bei meiner Attacke habe ich aber etwas überzogen und musste dann dafür bezahlen. Trotzdem bin ich happy, denn meine Form ist wirklich gut und das Rennen ist noch sehr lange.“ – Lennard Kämna

„Um ehrlich zu sein, sind die Jungs natürlich nicht besonders zufrieden mit dem Verlauf der Etappe, denn wir konzentrieren uns voll auf die Gesamtwertung.Wir möchten hier eine Rolle spielen und das haben wir heute gezeigt. Die Motivation ist da. Lenni hat leider einen kleinen Fehler gemacht und bei seiner Attacke etwas überzogen. Aber es ist immer besser, etwas zu versuchen, als einfach nur mitzufahren. Das Rennen ist immer noch eng und das Zeitfahren morgen ist sehr wichtig und müsste Lenni eigentlich liegen. Vlasov und Kämna in der Gruppe der Favoriten am Gran Sasso

Am siebten Tag kehrte die Italien-Rundfahrt in die Abruzzen zurück, wo nach 218 km eine Bergankunft am Gran Sasso im höchsten Gebirgsmassiv des Apennin wartete. Auf einer Länge von mehr als 40 km und auf über 2000m Höhe führte der Schlussanstieg der Etappe und galt damit auch als erster echter Härtetest für die Klassementfahrer. Allerdings kam es am Ende nicht zum erwarteten Schlagabtausch der Favoriten. Ein Ausreißertrio hatte teilweise mehr als 14 Minuten Vorsprung herausgefahren und machte den Tagessieg unter sich aus, während Team DSM das Tempo für den Gesamtführenden A. Leknessund im Feld kontrollierte. BORA – hansgrohe war im Finale der Etappe aufmerksam an der Spitze der Gruppe der Favoriten, allerdings wurde das Tempo erst auf den letzten beiden Kilometern erhöht, wodurch rund 25 Fahrer, angeführt von R. Evenepoel rund 3 Minuten hinter den Ausreißern das Ziel erreichten. Beim Sieg von M. Bais, beendeten Lennard Kämna und Aleksandr Vlasov die Etappe auf den Rängen 15 und 18 und liegen damit nun beide in den Top Ten der Gesamtwertung.

„Es war ein langer Tag, der durch das schlechte Wetter am Anfang noch erschwert wurde. Im Fernsehen war das Rennen heute wahrscheinlich nicht so spannend. Ich hatte auch erwartet, dass die anderen Teams im Schlussanstieg etwas versuchen würden, aber das ist am Ende nicht geschehen. Vielleicht lag es auch daran, dass am Ende der Wind von vorne kam. Auf jeden Fall haben unsere Jungs eine gute Leistung gezeigt und Aleks und Lenny sind in der Gruppe der Favoriten sicher ins Ziel gekommen.“ – Enrico Gasparotto, Sportlicher Leiter

Tag sechs beim Giro endet beinahe mit einer Überraschung

Die heutige 162 km lange 6. Etappe mit Start und Ziel in Neapel führte das Feld auf einer Schleife um den Vesuv bis zur Halbinsel von Sorrento südlich der Stadt. Obwohl das Profil nicht sonderlich anspruchsvoll aussah, wies das Finale in den verwinkelten Straßen von Neapel einige Gefahrenstellen auf. Es ging also einmal mehr darum, aufmerksam an der Spitze des Feldes zu fahren, um Stürzen aus dem Weg zu gehen. Beinahe verpokerten sich die Sprinterteams heute, denn ein Führungsduo wurde erst auf den letzten 300 Metern gestellt. Am Ende sicherte sich M. Pedersen den Tagessieg, während Aleksandr Vlasov und Lennard Kämna ohne Probleme und abermals ohne Zeitverlust das Ziel erreichten. Vor der morgigen zweiten Bergetappe des Giro liegen also beide weiter in aussichtsreicher Position in der Gesamtwertung.

„Wir wussten, dass die Strecke sehr technisch ist und dass es sehr viele schmale Passagen sowie Kopfsteinpflasterstraßen an der Amalfi-Küste gibt. Das Ziel des Teams war, unsere zwei Klassementfahrer aus allen Schwierigkeiten herauszuhalten und das ist uns auch sehr gut gelungen. Bemerkenswert war die Begeisterung am Streckenrand.
