Lannilis, Sunday, May 7th 2023 – This Sunday, the Tro Bro Leon witnessed the consecration of a new master of the stony “ribinoù” tracks, namely Giacomo Nizzolo (Israel-Premier Tech), who brought the domination of Team Arkéa-Samsic to a close, after two consecutive victories. This master stroke was in fact a trial run: it was the first time he has taken part in the event in Finistère. Initially marked by a 150-km breakaway by Maël Guégan, Damien Girard and Morne Van Niekerk, this 39th edition was decided in the last 50 kilometres, as predicted by organiser Jean-Paul Mellouët. After attempts by Brittany natives Laurent Pichon and Olivier Le Gac, a five-man group managed brake free in the La Ferme section, 10 km from the finishing line, before being joined by two men, including Nizzolo, who then displayed his sprinting strength to become the second Italian winner of the event, four years after Andrea Vendrame. The race went down to the wire and he pipped favourite Arnaud de Lie (Lotto Dstny) and Nils Eekhoff (Team DSM) at the post. The first French rider, Isère native Eddy Finé (Cofidis), finished in 4th place.

The sky was overcast but the tarmac was dry when the 150 riders started out at 11.57 from Plouguerneau. After plenty of attempts, a first breakaway formed after 8 km. Morne Van Niekerk (St Michel-Mavic-Auber93) was accompanied by Frenchmen Maël Guégan (CIC U Nantes Atlantque) and Damien Girard (Nice Métropole Côte d’Azur). It was not the first time the South African has found himself in such a situation: he was already part of the first group of escapees last year, such boldness enabling him to finish in 8th place. The leading trio were followed a pack lying 30’’ behind before the peloton let them off the leash, trailing by two minutes on arrival in Lanarvily, where each winter the cyclo-cross dedicated to the memory of the late Jean Le Hir takes place, and by five minutes when the first of the 27 sections of ribinoù were reached, after 50 km.

De Lie unveils his ambitions
The Lotto Dstny riders slowly picked up the pace, a sign of the ambitions held by their leader Arnaud de Lie, who won the Grand Prix du Morbihan the day before and finished 4th last year. Out in front, the spoils were smartly shared, with Guégan taking the points for the first sprint (after 67 km), Girard for the first climb (after 73 km) and, later, Van Niekerk on the ribinoù. A crash gave several riders a close-up taste of the tarmac, including Matis Louvel (Arkéa-Samsic), before the third section of ribinoù, with the race ending prematurely for Jens Biermans (Arkéa-Samsic), Joris Delbove (St Michel-Mavis-Auber93) and Unai Iribar (Euskaltel-Euskadi).

Van Niekerk hunts the ribinoù points
A stone’s throw from the rocky outcrop of the Pointe Saint-Mathieu, and under the eager gaze of Brest native Valentin Madouas, who had come to watch, Van Niekerk held the lead at section No. 4, the first of the six included in the ribinoù classification (along with sections 7, 10, 15, 17 and 26). The riders then turned right to start their return towards Lannilis, along the seafront. The gap, which culminated at 6’15“, was down to five minutes halfway through the race (after 102 km of the 204 to be covered), with an average speed of 41 km/h.

The sprints for Guégan
Van Niekerk was again in front at the Eoliennes section (No. 7) whilst the peloton continued to close in (trailing by 3’15“). On passing through Brélès, 83 km from the finishing line, Guégan picked up five points more, ensuring victory in the sprint classification. As the rain started to fall, the leading trio’s lead dropped below three minutes, though the gap stabilised on this touristic route, where a few rays of sunshine lit up the spectacular coastal landscape around Landunvez.

The climbs for Girard
The peloton upped the pace markedly and only trailed by 1’05’’ on exiting section No. 10, which Van Niekerk was first to complete. The pack split in two and was made up of only approximately thirty riders when the leading trio were reeled in on the Loc Majan ascent, included in the best climber classification, 47 km from the finishing line. Girard, although caught by the peloton, still managed to complete the 11th section of ribinoù in the lead, before a final effort gave him victory in the best climber classification. On the first passage over the finishing line, the second pack, which was unable to catch the first one before the race’s conclusion, was already more than one minute behind.

Pichon and Le Gac delight the crowds
With two previous titles to boast, Arkéa-Samsic launched a major offensive on ribinoù section No. 20, 23 km from the finishing line. Elie Gesbert acted as a springboard to launch Laurent Pichon to the front, but the local rider, taking part in his 12th Tro Bro, was caught at the instigation of Norwegian champion Rasmus Tiller (Uno-X). The other darling of the crowds, Olivier Le Gac (Groupama-FDJ), found an opening with 15 km to go and led on the second passage over the finishing line, just five seconds ahead of the pack, which caught up with him on exiting ribinoù section No. 24.

Nizzolo has the last word
There were still about thirty riders able to dream of victory with 10 km left to cover. Arnaud de Lie accelerated in ribinoù section No. 26, called La Ferme. However, his attack was countered by one from former cyclo-cross specialist Eddy Finé (Cofidis) and Tiller, who gained a lead of several metres. The Belgian managed to catch back up with them accompanied by Clément Venturini (AG2R Citroen) and Nils Eekhoff (DSM). Pichon and Giacomo Nizzolo (Israël – Premier Tech) also joined the front group, before the final section. The rider from Brittany again tried his luck less than 3 km from the finishing line, but in vain, as Nizzolo triumphed with a sprint finish, just ahead of De Lie.

Giacomo Nizzolo powers to victory at Circuito Gexto for Team Qhubeka NextHash

Giacomo Nizzolo won the Circuito de Gexto – Memorial Hermanos Otxoa, sprinting to the victory from a small breakaway group. Giovanni Aleotti (Bora-Hansgrohe) finished 2nd and Santiago Buitrago (Bahrain-Victorious) was 3rd.
The UCI 1.1 Circuito de Gexto saw riders take on 6 laps of an undulating circuit between Bilbao and Gexto, before completing a larger finishing circuit that included the the tough final climb of Pike Bidea, for a total race distance of 194km.
Team Qhubeka NextHash had last year’s second place finisher, Giacomo Nizzolo, targeting the top step of the podium today and so our South African UCI World Tour team rallied around the European champion throughout the race.
The race got off to a very fast start with numerous attacks and the pace was so high that it took almost 90km before any break finally got a significant gap. 11 strong riders had gone off the front and so Team Qhubeka NextHash, together with Caja-Rural and Bora-Hansgrohe took up the chase.
With around 55km to go, the pressure was on to bring the leaders back and as a result, there was a split at the head of the peloton as 12 riders went off in pursuit of the early leaders. Team Qhubeka NextHash had both Nizzolo and Carlos Barbero in this select chase group.

Barbero would go on to play a pivotal support role for Nizzolo, all the way up to the final climb of Pike Bidea at 15km to go, as he worked hard to ensure the breakaway was caught before the climb.
On the climb it was then up to Nizzolo to try and follow the climbers as they began attacking on the steep slopes. The Italian sprinter held his own and did a fantastic climb, to summit in 5th place, just 15″ behind the front riders. He was then able to bridge across to the lead on the descent, setting up an exciting finale.
Bora-Hansgrohe had a numbers advantage in the group that was now reduced to just 7 riders. Nizzolo had to follow a stinging attack from Ide Schelling with 6km to go but was successful in doing so and this set up a sprint finish between Nizzolo, Buitrago and the teammates of Aleotti and Schelling.
Nizzolo was too strong in the final kick for the other 3 riders and with 150m to go, he powered away to take a fine victory for Team Qhubeka NextHash. Barbero also managed to come home in a respectable 11th place, making it a great day for the team all round.

Giacomo Nizzolo
I am super happy about today’s victory. Last year I came 2nd here so this year I really wanted to win. The race was super difficult to control because everyone wanted to attack. I had to attack as well and spent a lot of energy but in the end I still felt good so I am super happy. Thanks to all the team for the support today and also to all the fans here in Basque Country, they always have a lot of passion and are very special to me.

Giacomo Nizzolo sprints to maiden Grand Tour stage win

Giacomo Nizzolo sprinted to an incredible first-ever grand tour stage victory, on stage 13 of the Giro d’Italia. The Team Qhubeka ASSOS sprinter broke his duck of 19 grand tour stage podiums without a win, by taking the top step in Verona today.
Starting in Ravenna, the stage covered a mostly flat 198km route to finish with a mass sprint in Verona. The Italian and European champion, Nizzolo, already having placed 2nd twice at this year’s Giro d’Italia, was determined to not be denied once again.
Team Qhubeka ASSOS took the reins in the peloton over the final 10km, keeping Nizzolo up front and out of trouble through the tricky final kilometers. A committed team effort ensured Nizzolo had the opportunity to sprint for the win today.
As Edoardo Affini (Jumbo-Visma) got a slight jump on the peloton in the home straight, Nizzolo had to come from some way back over the final 400m, launching his sprint early. With superior speed, Nizzolo was able to slingshot passed his compatriot in the final 50m to take a stunning stage win.
Following Mauro Schmid’s incredible stage triumph on stage 11 of the Giro d’Italia, this is the 2nd stage victory for Team Qhubeka ASSOS at this year’s race. With other top 10 stage placing’s from Max Walscheid and Victor Campenearts, and Nizzolo wearing the Maglia Ciclamino in the opening week, this is undoubtedly the most successful Giro d’Italia for Team Qhubeka ASSOS.

Giacomo Nizzolo
Watching the sprint takes me back to the moment and it is such an emotional feeling. The only thing I wanted to do today was to be able to sprint, without being blocked, and just show to myself what power I had in my legs and that’s what I did.
I am super happy and just want to enjoy this moment. The first person I called was my mother, it was special, and to my dad who couldn’t be here today as he had surgery a few days ago, this was for him.
I felt so much confidence from the team today, they were always around me, not only today but throughout the week. So, I am really happy to give them this victory as it is not only mine but for the whole team, for the purpose we race for, bicycles change lives. After Mauro’s victory two days ago, you can be sure there will be another big „Ubuntu“ celebration tonight.

Platz sichern.- Jean-Pierre Heydnderickx, Sportlicher Leiter

Giacomo Nizzolo won the Clasica de Almeria in a fantastic sprint finish finale, the first win of the season for the Italian & European Champion and Team Qhubeka ASSOS.

The 183km Clasica de Almeria took place today under a beautiful blue Spanish sky. A strong peloton of 154 riders set off from Pueblo de Vicar on an out, around and back route, finishing in Rocquetas de Mar.
Team Qhubeka ASSOS sent a strong line up to the Spanish UCI 1.Pro race, with Giacomo Nizzolo leading the 7-rider roster that also included Max Walscheid, Victor Campenaerts, Matteo Pelucchi, Carlos Barbero, Emil Vinjebo and Sean Bennett.
With most of the climbing taking place in the opening 100km, followed by a flatter final 80km, the race was expected to end in a bunch sprint. A few early breakaway attempts came to nothing, and it was a packed peloton racing into the final 50km, all together.
It was a nervy run in to the line and the fight for position resulted in numerous crashes, splitting and whittling down the peloton regularly. After protection from his teammates, Nizzolo made it to the final kilometer well placed but still with a fair bit to do in the technical finish.
The European Champion went around the outside in the final right hand bend and powered away from his challengers with a superior turn of speed. Florian Senechel (Deceuninck-Quickstep) would cross the line 2nd and Martin Laas (Bora-Hansgrohe) rounded out the podium.

Nizzolo’s win is his first of the 2021 cycling season and also the first for Team Qhubeka ASSOS!

Giacomo Nizzolo
I am really happy about today’s victory and the great job the team did today. From the start we tried to control the race, but the race was a bit strange, kind of on-and-off a few times because of the wind. The final was quite tricky but we managed to have a good position for the sprint, so I am really happy for the team and we look forward to the next one.

Douglas Ryder – Team Principal
I am so excited about winning today in Spain, just our third event of the year. We were on the podium in Besseges and our climbers were beginning to show themselves in Provence, and now our Italian and European Champion, Giacomo Nizzolo goes and wins in the south of Spain, in Almeria.
We had such a good training camp just outside Girona, bringing this team together under one culture of Ubuntu, I am because we are. It was such a cool thing to see, 27 riders of 16 different nationalities pulling together, so to win today was just, wow, an incredible performance and brilliant showing from the team there. Our first win as Team Qhubeka ASSOS is something special.
And we are delighted for Giacomo, to continue his incredible form from last season, we are so happy that he is part of Team Qhubeka ASSOS so the future is looking good.

Nizzolo steals the show

Italy’s Giacomo Nizzolo stole the show from Maximilian Schachmann’s Bora-Hansgrohe team on Monday when he took the second stage of Paris-Nice over 166.5-km after outwitting his rivals on the line. The NTT Pro Cycling rider surged in the wheel of Schachmann’s team-mate Pascal Ackermann in the final stretch to raise his arms in another eventful day on the Race to the Sun, with rain, echelons and crashes which saw pre-race favourites Nairo Quintana (Arkea-Samsic) and Julian Alaphilippe (Deceuninck-Quick Step) lose 1:25 after crashing and flatting respectively. Helped all day by acting road captain Peter Sagan, Schachmann retained his yellow jersey with a 15 seconds lead over Nizzolo and 21 seconds over Belgium’s Jasper Stuyven (Trek-Segafredo).
Hivert goes for KOM points
The start of the second stage of Paris-Nice was given at 12:32 to 133 riders. KOM leader Jonathan Hivert (Direct Energie) and Jose Manuel Diaz (Nippo Delko Provence) attacked on the gun. They reached the first climb of the day (Cote des Loges, 3rd cat, km 22.5) with a 2:20 lead over the peloton. Hivert collected four more points to strengthen his polka-dot jersey. While Diaz collected three points at the intermediate sprint in Marchais (km 27.5), the two obtained their maximum lead at km 40 (3:10). Hivert grabbed four more points on Cote de Bouville (3rd cat, km 65.5) and on Cote du Pressoir (3rd cat, km 74) to bring his tally to 20 points, with Diaz in second place on six points.

Schachmann picks three seconds
The break ended at kilometre 105 as Hivert relaxed, his main goal achieved. The tempo raised on the junction and a few riders were temporarily dropped, among them Richie Porte (Trek-Segafredo). The bunch regrouped for the Km-116 intermediate sprint in Puiselet, which Maximilian Schachmann, perfectly led out by Peter Sagan, won ahead of Sergio Higuita (EF Pro Cycling) to add three seconds to his overall tally.
Quintana crashes
With 30 km to go, Team Groupama-FDJ and a few Trek-Segafredo riders, among them world champion Mads Pedersen, raised the pace and echelons took place. Among the riders dropped featured Australia’s Caleb Ewan (Lotto-Soudal), Ireland’s Sam Bennett (Deceucninck-Quick Step) and his leader Julian Alaphilippe, who flatted. Five kilometres further down the road, pre-race favourite N Quintana crashed and managed to get back in the race on the bike of his brother Dayer. In the last 20 km, a group of 35 riders emerged, including Schachmann, Thibaut Pinot, Sergio Higuita, Peter Sagan, Pedersen and Vincenzo Nibali to battle it out for the stage win.

Nizzolo steals the show
Sagan again raised the pace in the last 10 km, taking 11 riders with him: Schachmann, Pedersen, Nibali, Stuyven, Felix Grossschartner, Higuita, Ackermann, Nizzolo, Nils Politt, Krists Neilands and Mads Schmidt (all Israel Startup Nation). The stage looked set for Ackermann to win the sprint with two team-mates of the caliber of Sagan and Schachmann in the group, but Nizzolo played it just right and outwitted the Boras to surge in the last stretch and take the stage, his second victory of the season after the 5th stage of the Tour Down Under.

Tour Down Under – Etappe 5

– Enrico Poitschke, sportlicher Leiter
