Zielfoto entscheidet bei nächstem Ausreißersieg bei der Tour de France

Mit über 49 km/h Durchschnittsgeschwindigkeit war die 19. Etappe der Tour heute unglaublich schnell und entsprechend hart. Es dauerte lange, bevor sich eine erste erfolgversprechende Gruppe vom Feld rund um Nils Politt lösen konnte. Leider wurde Nils aber durch einen Defekt zurückgeworfen und in der Folge formierte sich eine Gruppe von mehr als 30 Fahrern, die sich entscheidend absetzen konnte. BORA – hansgrohe war in dieser Gruppe mit Marco Haller und Jordi Meeus vertreten, allerdings zerteilte sich die Gruppe am letzten Anstieg in mehrere Teile. Ein Trio lag nun an der Spitze, während Marco in einer zweiten Verfolgergruppe fuhr und Jordi abgehängt war. Am Ende sicherte sich M. Mohoric im Zielfoto den Etappensieg, während Marco auf den letzten 500 m aus seiner Gruppe attackierte und letztlich Rang 13 erreichte.

“Die Etappe war extrem hart und alle Teams wussten, dass der Sieg über eine Gruppe geht. Für uns lief es eigentlich perfekt, denn Nils war heute wieder unglaublich stark und zuerst vorne. Leider hatte er wirklich Pech und bei seinem Defekt war das Teamfahrzeug noch hinter dem Feld, daher ist er zurückgefallen. Es hätte für uns einen riesigen Unterschied gemacht, Nils dabei zu haben. Ich war dann mit Jordi in der Gruppe, aber das Rennen war so unglaublich schnell, dass wir beide schon richtig angeschlagen waren, bevor es ins Finale ging. Ich hatte nicht mehr viele Körner übrig und musste etwas riskieren und habe versucht, das richtige Rad zu finden, aber es war ein Roulette. Am Ende hat es nicht gereicht, aber ich habe heute auch sicher nicht zu den besten Drei gehört.” – Marco Haller

Matej Mohoric pours the triple

Matej Mohoric claimed stage 19 like in Libourne 2021 to make it three for himself in his career as a Tour de France rider and three for his Bahrain Victorious team this year. A duel made a Slovenian beat a Dane since Kasper Asgreen missed out on the two-in-row by a very small margin. On GC, Denmarks kept the lead over Slovenia and Jonas Vingegaard received the 25th Maillot Jaune of his career in Poligny.

ALAPHILIPPE AND 8 OTHER RIDERS IN THE LEAD

The start of stage 19 was given to 151 riders at 13.33. Victor Campenaerts (Lotto-Dstny) went on the attack for the second consecutive day but he was reeled in after 10km of racing. Mad Pedersen (Lidl-Trek) and Alexey Lutsenko (Astana) managed to get a gap for themselves at km 18. The Kazakh national champion took 1 KOM point atop côte du bois de Lionge (km 23) while many people were reacting strongly at the head of the peloton. The leading duo was reeled in at km 37 by the first part of the peloton that included Jonas Vingegaard and Tadej Pogacar but not Adam Yates. Many more skirmishes took place after the regrouping. It led to the formation of a 9-man front group at km 57: Julian Alaphilippe (Soudal-Quick Step), Warren Barguil (Arkea-Samsic), Jack Haig (Bahrain Victorious), Nils Politt (Bora-Hansgrohe), Pedersen (Lidl-Trek), Georg Zimmermann (Intermarché-Circus-Wanty), Campenaerts (Lotto-Dstny), Tiesj Benoot (Jumbo-Visma) and Matteo Trentin (UAE Team Emirates).

CAMPENAERTS AND CLARKE AHEAD AND 34 CHASERS

Their advantage was 1’15’’ at km 62 but teams Israel-Premier Tech, Uno-X and EF Education-EasyPost were unhappy to have missed the breakaway so they chased hard. The front runners were only one minute ahead when Politt broke his chain and couldn’t resume racing on a new bike before the peloton overtook him with 90km remaining. 65km before the end, the eight leaders were joined by a group of more than thirty riders including Jasper Philipsen and Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Deceuninck), Tom Pidcock (Ineos Grenadiers) and Christophe Laporte (Jumbo-Visma). Simon Clarke (Israel-Premier Tech) and Campenaerts rode away right after the regrouping. Intermarché-Circus-Wanty seized the reins of the peloton to bring everyone together in favour of Biniam Girmay but they eventually surrendered and the gap went up. The 34 riders behind the leading duo were: Benoot, Laporte (Jumbo-Visma), Matteo Trentin (UAE Team Emirates), Pidcock (Ineos Grenadiers), Lars van den Berg (Groupama-FDJ), Alberto Bettiol, Neilson Powless (EF Education-EasyPost), Alaphilippe, Kasper Asgreen (Soudal-Quick Step), Haig, Matej Mohoric, Fred Wright (Bahrain Victorious), Marco Haller, Jordi Meeus (Bora-Hansgrohe), Mads Pedersen (Lidl-Trek), Ben O’Connor, Oliver Naesen (AG2R-Citroën), Van der Poel, Philipsen (Alpecin-Deceuninck), Zimmermann (Intermarché-Circus-Wanty), Ion Izagirre (Cofidis), Hugo Houle, Krists Neilands, Corbin Strong (Israel-Premier Tech), Luke Durbridge, Dylan Groenewegen, Luka Mezgec (Jayco-AlUla), Barguil (Arkea-Samsic), Jonas Abrahamsen, Anton Charmig, Rasmus Tiller, Soren Waerenskjold (Uno-X), Daniel Oss and Anthony Turgis (TotalEnergies).

PHOTO-FINISH TO SHOW MOHORIC WINS

Clarke gave up because of cramping. Asgreen, O’Connor and Mohoric overtook Campenaerts in the ascent of côte d’Ivory with 30km to go. Lots of counter-attacks were launched behind them in the last 25 kilometres. 10km before the end, they had 20’’ lead over nine chasers. The leading trio remained composed during the 8-km long straight line. O’Connor launched the sprint 500 metres before the line. He was overhauled by Asgreen who looked like going for his second stage win in a row but Mohoric pipped him on the line to claim his third Tour de France stage victory after he imposed himself at Le Creusot and Libourne in 2021. It’s also the third stage win for his Bahrain Victorious team this year following the successes of Pello Bilbao and Wout Poels. It makes it 16 stage wins for Slovenian riders since Primoz Roglic took the first one at Serre-Chevalier in 2017.

Ausreißer schlagen den Sprintern ein Schnippchen auf der 18. Etappe der Tour de France

Nach den schweren Bergen der letzten Tage kam die Tour heute zurück auf flaches Terrain. Damit war die 18. Etappe auch eine Chance für die Sprinter und das Feld ließ eine frühe Fluchtgruppe von drei Fahrern nie weiter als 1:30 weg. Doch die Spitze war heute besonders entschlossen und als etwa 30 km vor dem Ziel ein Fahrer vom Feld zur Spitze aufschließen konnte, begann ein harter Kampf zwischen der Spitzengruppe und dem Peloton. Auch BORA – hansgrohe beteiligte sich an der Arbeit im Feld, doch am Ende konnte sich die Spitze gerade noch ins Ziel retten und K. Asgreen holte den Etappensieg. Jordi Meeus überquerte die Ziellinie heute auf Rang sieben.

“Eigentlich sah es nach einem einfachen Tag aus. Die Gruppe war klein und der Abstand immer unter Kontrolle. Aber im hügeligen Teil konnte ein Fahrer nach vorne springen und die Ausreißer haben sich die Kräfte auch gut eingeteilt. Am Ende hatten sie noch etwas im Tank und haben es gerade so geschafft. Unsere Jungs haben mich sehr gut unterstützt und Danny hat mich in guter Position abgeliefert. Aber um ehrlich zu sein, hatte ich heute nicht die Beine. Die Bergetappen waren sehr hart und ich habe da sehr gelitten. Ich habe mich heute einfach nicht frisch genug gefühlt und so war es sicher nicht unser bester Tag.” – Jordi Meeus

Kasper anticipates Jasper

Kasper Asgreen claimed a surprise win at Bourg-en-Bresse, his first at the Tour de France, as he held off the sprinting peloton along with his breakaway companions Pascal Eenkhorn and Jonas Abrahamsen who rounded out the podium of stage 18. Hot favourite Jasper Philipsen had to settle for fourth in the first position of the peloton. Asgreen delivered Soudal-Quick Step’s first stage victory this year and a third for Denmark after Mads Pedersen and Jonas Vingegaard. The latter retains the yellow jersey.

ASGREEN, CAMPENAERTS AND ABRAHAMSEN IN THE LEAD

152 riders took the start of stage 18 in Moûtiers at 13.40. Non-starters: Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma) and Anthony Perez (Cofidis). Kasper Asgreen (Soudal-Quick Step) was the first attacker, quickly joined by Victor Campenaerts (Lotto-Dstny) and Jonas Abrahamsen (Uno-X). They got a maximum advantage of 1’48’’ at km 7. Teams Jayco-AlUla, DSM-Firmenich and Alpecin-Deceuninck paced the pack after that. For half of the race, the gap was stable around one minute. Abrahamsen took the two KOM points up for grabs at Chambéry-le-Haut (km 62) and atop côte de Boissieu (km 105) where attacks finally took place at the head of the peloton, involving Pascal Eenkhorn (Lotto-Dstny), local rider Simon Guglielmi (Arkea-Samsic), Quinten Hermans (Alpecin-Deceuninck) and Anthony Turgis (TotalEnergies).

EENKHORN REINFORCES THE LEAD GROUP

Eenkhorn rode away from the pack with 65km remaining. Campenaerts waited for him. The two Lotto-Dstny riders caught up with Asgreen and Abrahamsen to make it a leading quartet 58km before the end. Abrahamsen also won the intermediate against a very motivated Eenkhorn while Mads Pedersen (Lidl-Trek) showed no interest to challenge Philipsen for the green jersey. In the last hour of racing, Bora-Hansgrohe and Lidl-Trek took over from DSM-Firmenich, Alpecin-Deceuninck and Jayco-AlUla at the head of the peloton as the leading quartet was less than one minute up front.

THE PELOTON MISSES OUT ON CATCHING UP

Campenaerts was designated for the combativity award. He kept pulling the leading quartet until the very end, even when the chances to hold off the peloton were very slim with 40’’ lead at the 20-km to go mark, 20’’ with 10km to go and less than 10’’ within the last 3km. Campenaerts gave it all in the final straight with the idea to lead Eenkhorn out but it was Abrahamsen on his wheel and Asgreen who timed the sprint at perfection. The Dane came second in a stage to Gap in 2019 and second again in the St-Emilion ITT in 2021 before he took his maiden win today, keeping the momentum for Danish riders in a Tour dominated by his compatriot Jonas Vingegaard.

Tour de France Königsetappe sorgt für Umsturz in der Gesamtwertung

Mit dem Col de la Loze und insgesamt mehr als 5000 hm war die 17. Etappe der Tour de France auch die Königsetappe der diesjährigen Austragung. Das Rennen wurde von Beginn an offensiv gestaltet und nach etwas mehr als einer Rennstunde konnte sich eine etwa 35-Mann-Gruppe absetzen. Da auch einige Fahrer der Top Ten der Gesamtwertung in der Spitzengruppe waren, ließ das Feld die Gruppe nie wirklich weit wegfahren. Auch BORA – hansgrohe versuchte die Position von Jai Hindley zu verteidigen und zeigte sich vor dem Schlussanstieg an der Spitze des Feldes. Zu Beginn des Col de la Loze war der Abstand bei 2:45 und überraschenderweise fiel T. Pogacar schon mehr als 10 km vor dem Gipfel zurück. Jai Hindley kämpfte abermals hart, um den Kontakt zum Gelben Trikot zu halten, doch als J. Vingegaard attackierte, konnte niemand folgen. Jai fuhr nun zusammen mit C. Rodriguez und konnte sich heute besser als auf den letzten Bergetappen halten. Am Ende holte F. Gall den Etappensieg, während S. Yates und P. Bilbao einen Sprung in der Gesamtwertung machen konnten. T. Pocagar verlor mehr als 7 Minuten und Jai Hindley liegt nun auf Rang sieben der Gesamtwertung.

“Ich habe immer noch Schmerzen und muss wirklich hart kämpfen. Das größte Problem ist, dass ich nicht richtig beschleunigen kann. Es war trotzdem der erste Tag, an dem ich mich etwas besser gefühlt habe. Es ist zwar frustrierend zu wissen, dass ich meine Form nicht zeigen kann, aber ich habe dennoch alles versucht. Ich konnte auch einen ganz guten Rhythmus fahren, als ich abgehängt war. Wir müssen einfach weiter positiv bleiben. Es kommen jetzt zwei Tage, an denen ich mich weiter erholen kann und am Samstag werden wir sehen, was noch möglich ist.” – Jai Hindley

“Wir wollten natürlich mit Jai in der großen Gruppe sein, aber er sagt, er kann einfach keinen Attacken folgen. Im Sattel zu fahren geht schon um einiges besser, aber aus dem Sattel hat er immer noch große Schmerzen und sein Körper blockiert dann. Dennoch ist er heute ein gutes Rennen gefahren und auch Nils und Bob waren heute wieder stark. Für mich war das heute eine Trendwende. Gestern habe ich mir wirklich Sorgen gemacht, heute sah das schon viel besser aus. Wir haben auch heute wieder gesehen, dass jeden Tag alles passieren kann und daher müssen wir auch positiv bleiben und jede Chance ergreifen, die sich noch ergibt.” – Rolf Aldag, Sportlicher Leiter

Felix Gall, the third winning debutant

After Jai Hindley and Carlos Rodriguez, Felix Gall became the third Tour de France debutant to win a stage – a big mountain stage also – in the 110th edition as the Austrian from AG2R-Citroën soloed up to col de la Loze to win at Courchevel before Simon Yates and Jonas Vingegaard who won another duel with Tadej Pogacar by a huge margin.

CICCONE FIRST AT LES SAISIES

155 riders took the start of stage 17 at 12.34. One non-starter: Alexis Renard (Cofidis). French champion Valentin Madouas (Groupama-FDJ) and Magnus Cort (EF Education-EasyPost) were first on the attack but it didn’t work out. Tadej Pogacar crashed after 15km of racing. Rafal Majka (UAE Team Emirates), Thibaut Pinot (Groupama-FDJ), Neilson Powless, Rigoberto Uran (EF Education-EasyPost), Julian Alaphilippe (Soudal-Quick Step), Jack Haig (Bahrain Victorious), Giulio Ciccone, Mattias Skjelmose (Lidl-Trek), Felix Gall (AG2R-Citroën), Rui Costa (Intermarché-Circus-Wanty), Victor Lafay (Cofidis), Kevin Vermaerke (DSM-Firmenich), Krists Neilands (Israel-Premier Tech), Simon Yates, Lawson Craddock, Chris Harper (Jayco-AlUla), Clément Champoussin (Arkea-Samsic), Jonas Gregaard (Uno-X) rode away after 20km of racing, which was 8km before the col des Saisies. Despite a regrouping, Ciccone crested col des Saisies (cat. 1, km 28) in first position before his team-mate Skjelmose. The Italian rode away in the downhill along with Alaphilippe and Neilands.

CICCONE FIRST AT CORMET DE ROSELEND AND LONGEFOY

35 riders gathered at the front 13km before the summit of Cormet de Roselend: Tiesj Benoot, Wilco Kelderman (Jumbo-Visma) Rafal Majka, Marc Soler (UAE Team Emirates), David Gaudu, Stefan Küng, Valentin Madouas, Thibaut Pinot (Groupama-FDJ), Magnus Cort, Rigoberto Uran (EF Education-EasyPost), Julian Alaphilippe, Dries Devenyns (Soudal-Quick Step), Pello Bilbao, Jack Haig (Bahrain Victorious), Giulio Ciccone, Mattias Skjelmose (Lidl-Trek), Ben O’Connor, Nans Peters, Felix Gall (Ag2r-Citröen), Rui Costa (Intermarché-Circus-Wanty), Guillaume Martin (Cofidis), Gregor Mühlberger (Movistar), Matthew Dinham, Kevin Vermaerke (DSM-Firmenich), Hugo Houle, Nick Schultz, Krists Neilands (Israel-PremierTech), Simon Yates, Lawson Craddock, Chris Harper (Jayco-AlUla), Clément Champoussin, Simon Guglielmi (Arkéa-Samsic), Alexey Lutsenko, Gianni Moscon (Astana), Tobias Johannessen, Jonas Gregaard (Uno-X). Ciccone and Skjelmose were again first and second at Cormet de Roselend and côte de Longefoy. In the valley, Küng kept the breakaway alive while Van Aert was pulling the yellow jersey group strongly. The time difference was 3’ with 50km to go.

GALL AND THE AG2R-CITROËN TRADITION IN THE MOUNTAINS

15 riders did most of the ascent to col de la Loze together at the front while the group of the Maillot Jaune was in no hurry to catch them. However, Tadej Pogacar was distanced by Vingegaard and his team-mates 16km before the end. With 13km to go, Gall rode away solo after O’Connor sacrificed his chances for him. The Austrian crested col de la Loze in first position and won the Souvenir Henri-Desgrange 20’’ ahead of Simon Yates. He was on his way to a solo victory to maintain the tradition of AG2R-Citroën: the French team based the Savoy where stage 16 took place won a mountain stage of the Tour de France in 2020 with Nans Peters in the Pyrénées, in 2021 and 2022 with Ben O’Connor and Bob Jungels in the Alps. Vingegaard crossed the line in third position 5’45’’ before Pogacar. The advantage of the Dane over the Slovenian is 7’35’’ with four stages to go.

Jai Hindley verliert weiter an Boden beim Zeitfahren der Tour de France

Nach dem zweiten Ruhetag stand heute ein 22 km langes Einzelzeitfahren auf dem Programm der Tour de France. Ein bergiger Parkour sorgte für überraschend große Zeitabstände am Ende. J. Vingegaard war eine Klasse für sich und gewann mit 1:38 Vorsprung auf T. Pogacar. Für Jai Hindley war es abermals ein schwieriger Tag. Sichtlich immer noch angeschlagen von seinem Sturz auf der 14. Etappe, erreichte Jai das Ziel heute auf Rang 24 mit mehr als viereinhalb Minuten Rückstand zu Vingegaard. In der Gesamtwertung liegt der Australier aber weiter auf Rang fünf.

“Na ja, das war sicher nicht mein bester Tag. Ich kämpfe immer noch mit den Sturzverletzungen und habe Probleme, die Kraft aufs Pedal zu bringen. Wir haben den Tag gestern für Therapie genutzt, daher war das Training weniger im Fokus und es war heute schwierig für mich, den Rhythmus zu finden. Wir können jetzt eigentlich nur von Tag zu Tagen schauen und Mal abwarten, wie ich mich morgen fühle. Vingegaard outclasses Pogacar against the clock

Jonas Vingegaard managed to beat Tadej Pogacar by an unexpected margin of 1’38’’ in the mountainous time trial to Combloux to become the first ever Danish to win a Tour de France ITT and impose himself against the clock like Julian Alaphilippe (2019) and Chris Froome (2016) before him. It’s Jumbo-Visma’s first stage win this year. The Dane leads the Tour by 1’48’’ and Adam Yates joins team-mate Pogacar in the top 3 overall.

RÉMI CAVAGNA FIRST OF THE ITT SPECIALISTS ON THE ROAD

Michael Morkov was the first rider to leave the starting ramp at 13.05. There was one non-starter among the 157 riders on the ITT entry list: Matteo Jorgenson (Movistar). Dries Devenyns (Soudal-Quick Step), the oldest participant of this Tour de France who will turn 40 on the eve of the grand finale in Paris, was invited to the hot seat as he set the best time of the first twenty riders in action. He was ousted by Nikias Arndt (Bahrain Victorious) before Mads Pedersen (Lidl-Trek) took over. But it was ITT French champion Rémi Cavagna (Soudal-Quick Step) who scored a reference for the specialists in 35’42’’ at the average speed of 37.647km/h. The “TGV from Clermont-Ferrand” had chosen to not change bike for the Domancy climb.

BELGIAN ITT CHAMPION OUSTS FRENCH CHAMPION FROM THE HOT SEAT

Cavagna remained on the hot seat for two hours and twelve minutes. A bike change didn’t enable Stefan Küng to reverse the situation after he lost to the Frenchman at the bottom of the climb the best time he provisionally established at check point 1. But Belgian national champion for ITT Wout van Aert bettered him as he opted for the same tactic of covered all the 22.4 kilometres on his TT bike. He rode 35 seconds faster than Cavagna from the bottom of the Domancy climb till the finish line to clinch an average speed of 37.912km/h.

VINGEGAARD AHEAD FROM START TO FINISH

In the duel for the Maillot Jaune, Vingegaard indicated his superiority from the start as he rode the first 7km 16’’ faster than Pogacar. He looked like taking more risks in the curves going downhill. At the bottom of the hill, where Pogacar got a new bike, the Dane extended his advantage to 31’’. At the top of the hill, still on TT bike, he doubled it up to 1’05’’ and completed the course with the enormous advantage of 1’38’’. Pogacar posted the second best time of the day with Van Aert rounding out the stage podium and Pello Bilbao taking a worthy fourth place. Adam Yates managed to overtake Carlos Rodriguez in third place overall while Felix Gall made it back into the top 10 at the expense of Guillaume Martin.

Schwieriger Tag für Jai Hindley der auf Rang 5 der Gesamtwertung abrutscht vor dem zweiten Ruhetag der Tour de France

Die letzte Alpenetappe der Tour de France forderte den Fahrern heute noch einmal alles ab. Nach einem langen Kampf um die Gruppe des Tages setzten sich letztlich fast 40 Mann vom Feld ab und für BORA – hansgrohe waren mit Marco Haller und Nils Politt zwei Fahrer an der Spitze. Dennoch war klar, dass beide eigentlich keine Chance auf den Tagessieg hatten, sondern durch ihre Flucht vielmehr Jai Hindley im Finale der Etappe unterstützen sollten. Etwa 40 Kilometer vor dem Ziel war es dann auch so weit und beide fielen in das erste Feld zurück, in dem auch noch Bob Jungels, Patrick Konrad und Emanuel Buchmann an der Seite von Jai waren. Leider stürzte Emu in der Abfahrt vor dem letzten Anstieg des Tages und spielte am Ende heute keine Rolle. Doch auch für Jai war es nach seinem Sturz gestern ein harter Tag. Der Australier verlor bereits 7 km vor dem Ziel Anschluss zur Gruppe um das Gelbe Trikot und kämpfte von da an alleine um seine Position in der Gesamtwertung. Am Ende holte W. Poels den Tagessieg aus der Spitzengruppe, während Jai das Ziel auf Rang 25 erreichte, knapp zwei Minuten hinter dem Gelben Trikot. Damit liegt Jai nun auf dem 5. Gesamtrang, 1:17 hinter dem Podium vor dem zweiten Ruhetag der Tour.

“Das war heute wieder ein brutal schwieriger Tag und offensichtlich nicht mein bester. Es ist schwer zu sagen, inwieweit der Sturz von gestern eine Rolle gespielt hat, aber ich habe auch heute sehr gelitten. Natürlich kommt die Müdigkeit auch durch die drei harten Bergetappen, aber normal spielt mir das eher in die Karten. Heute leider nicht. Aber wir können ohnehin nichts tun. Ich habe mein Bestes gegeben und alles versucht. Jetzt geht es nur darum, sich am Ruhetag zu erholen. Das Podium ist eigentlich noch nicht weit weg, aber ohne meine Bestform spielt das keine Rolle. Es geht also nur darum, sich zu erholen.” – Jai Hindley

Poels, better late than never

Wout Poels claimed his first stage win at the Tour de France at the age of 35 after spending many years at the service of great leaders. The best personal result of the 2016 Liège-Bastogne-Liège winner in the Grande Boucle was third at Andorra in 2021 until he soloed to victory at St-Gervais Mont-Blanc. Wout van Aert and Mathieu Burgaudeau rounded out the podium while Jonas Vingegaard and Tadej Pogacar arrived together once again.

ALPAHILIPPE AND LUTSENKO ON THE ATTACK

The start proper of stage 15 has been given to 157 riders at 13.26. One non-starter: Dani Martinez (Ineos Grenadiers). Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Deceuninck) was the first attacker of the day but the peloton reacted to all initial offensives. A split occurred in the bunch after 10km of racing with Sepp Kuss (Jumbo-Visma) and Felix Gall (AG2R-Citroën) caught behind but it was all together again at km 16. Stefan Küng (Groupama-FDJ), Alberto Bettiol, Neilson Powless (EF Education-EasyPost), Jasper Stuyven (Lidl-Trek), Ben O’Connor (Ag2r-Citröen), Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Deceuninck), Gorka Izagirre (Movistar), Matthew Dinham (DSM-Firmenich), Anthony Turgis (TotalEnergies) made an interesting move but were also reined in at km 26. Nils Politt (Bora-Hansgrohe) rode away solo at km 29. He was joined by riders like Julian Alaphilippe (Soudal-Quick Step) and Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma) in several moves. Alaphilipe and Alexey Lutsenko (Astana) escaped from a 27-man leading group after 42km of racing.

MARTIN IN A 39-MAN LEADING GROUP

A group of 37 was formed behind the leading duo when a crash occurred in the peloton at km 52, putting an end to the chase. It was composed of Van Aert (Jumbo-Visma), Marc Soler (UAE Team Emirates), Omar Fraile (Ineos Grenadiers), Olivier Le Gac, Thibaut Pinot (Groupama-FDJ), Andrey Amador, Magnus Cort, Powless, Rigoberto Uran (EF Education-EasyPost), Mikel Landa, Wout Poels (Bahrain Victorious), Marco Haller, Patrik Konrad, Nils Politt (Bora-Hansgrohe), Giulio Ciccone, Mathias Skjelmose, Juan Pedro Lopez (Lidl-Trek), Nans Peters (Ag2r-Citröen), Van der Poel, Soren Kragh Andersen (Alpecin-Deceuninck), Rui Costa (Intermarché-Circus-Wanty), Guillaume Martin, Ion Izagirre (Cofidis), Alex Aranburu (Movistar), Chris Hamilton (DSM-Firmenich), Michael Woods, Hugo Houle, Krists Neilands, Dylan Teuns (Israel-PremierTech), Lawson Craddock, Luka Mezgec, Chris Juul-Jensen (Jayco-AlUla), Warren Barguil, Simon Guglielmi (Arkéa-Samsic), Tobias Halland Johannessen, Torstein Traeen (Uno-X) and Mathieu Burgaudeau (TotalEnergies). The peloton crossed the line of the intermediate sprint at Bluffy (km 72) eight minutes after Alaphilippe and Lutsenko. With 85km remaining, it became a lead group of 39 riders. Haller took off 10km further.

POELS ALONE AT CÔTE DES AMERANDS

Rui Costa overhauled Haller to become the lone leader in the ascent to col de la Croix Fry 60km before the end but he was brought back by 19 chasers 1.3km before the summit. Ciccone crested in first place. Soler attacked in the following climb. The Spaniard was later joined by Van Aert, Poels and Neilands who crashed in a downhill. Poels rode away solo up the côte des Amerands with 10.7km remaining. The yellow jersey group was reduced to the lone Adam Yates along with Vingegaard and Pogacar in the last ten kilometres of racing. Yates rode away from the duellists who were rejoined for a while by Carlos Rodriguez before Pogacar launched his first attack under the red flame of the last kilometre Vingegaard managed to stick to his wheel without any difficulty and retained the yellow jersey before the second rest day.

Jai Hindley rutscht trotz beherztem Kampf nach Sturz auf der 14. Etappe der Tour de France auf Rang vier der Gesamtwertung

Bereits nach 6 km ereignete sich auf der zweiten Alpenetappe der Tour heute ein schwerer Massensturz, in den auch Jai Hindley verwickelt war. Glücklicherweise konnte Jai das Rennen, das für 30 min unterbrochen wurde, wieder aufnehmen. Über den Rest der Etappe entbrannte ein weiteres Mal eine wahre Schlacht um den Etappensieg. Keine Gruppe wurde entscheidend weggelassen und am vorletzten Anstieg lag eine kleine Gruppe der Favoriten an der Spitze des Rennens. Jai Hindley war zu diesem Zeitpunkt noch vorne mit dabei, während Emanuel Buchmann bereits abreißen lassen musste. Am Col de Joux Plane wurde das Tempo weiter erhöht und als nur noch 6 Fahrer an der Spitze waren, musste Jai etwa sechs Kilometer vor der Bergwertung abreißen lassen. Trotz eines unglaublichen Kampfes verlor er am Ende 1:46 zum Etappensieger C. Rodriguez, der damit nun eine Sekunde vor Jai auf Rang drei der Gesamtwertung liegt.

“Nach dem Sturz hatte ich Schmerzen. Ich denke nicht, dass es was Ernstes ist, eher muskulär. Aber es war schmerzhaft, besonders wenn ich aus dem Sattel ging, also alles andere als optimal. Carlos Rodriguez, the birth of a champion

Carlos Rodriguez took advantage of the rivalry between Jonas Vingegaard and Tadej Pogacar to catch them and ride away from them in the downhill of col de Joux-Plane to become the youngest ever Spanish stage winner at the Tour de France at the age of 22. Vingegaard retained the yellow jersey.

MEINTJES, CHAVES AND BARDET ABANDON
The start proper of stage 14 was given to 165 riders at 13.23. The race was put on halt for half an hour after 6.5km due to a massive crash that forced Louis Meintjes (Intermarché-Circus-Wanty) and Antonio Pedrero (Movistar) to withdraw from the Tour de France. A second start was given at 14.01. Esteban Chaves (EF Education-EasyPost) pulled out in pain at km 15 while the first significant breakaway took shape with Lars van den Berg (Groupama-FDJ) being joined by Julian Alaphilippe (Soudal-Quick Step) and Krists Neilands (Israel-Premier Tech) and later by Dani Martinez (Ineos Grenadiers) and Alexey Lutsenko (Astana). Romain Bardet (DSM-Firmenich) and James Shaw (EF Education-EasyPost) crashed out in the downhill of col de Saxel at km 25.

2 CAT. 1 KOM FOR CICCONE
After tons of attempts, attacks, counter-attacks and riders being dropped, a lead group of 21 riders took shape. It included three men from the top 20 overall: Thibaut Pinot (Groupama-FDJ), Guillaume Martin (Cofidis) and Mikel Landa (Bahrain Victorious). Tobias Halland Johannessen (Uno-X) and Giulio Ciccone (Lidl-Trek) were very active, both interested in the King of the Mountains competition. Ciccone outsprinted polka dot jersey wearer Neilson Powless (EF Education-EasyPost), Alaphilippe and Pinot at cat. 1 col de Cou (km 35.3). The Italian also crested cat. 1 col du Feu (km 52) first and forged on by himself in the downhill until Pinot, Landa, Alex Aranburu (Movistar) Wout Poels (Bahrain Victorious) and Michael Woods (Israel-Premier Tech) came across. Pinot, Landa, Poels, Martin, Martinez, Ciccone, Alexey Lutsenko (Astana), Alex Aranburu and Gorka Izagirre, (Movistar), Hugo Houle and Woods (Israel-PremierTech) managed to stay away while Jumbo-Visma kept them on a leash. Ciccone passed the line of the intermediate sprint at col de Jambaz (km 65.5) in first position. Ciccone and Woods rode away at the beginning of the ascent to col de la Ramaz (km 101). Their former breakaway companions got reeled in 10km before the top while the yellow jersey group was down to about thirty riders including six from Jumbo-Visma and six from UAE Team Emirates. Ciccone surrendered two kilometres further. Van Aert crested col de la Ramaz in first position.

VINGEGAARD BEATS POGACAR ATOP JOUX-PLANE
16 riders were reunited at the front with 30km to go: Van Aert, Sepp Kuss, Wilco Kelderman, Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma), Felix Grossschartner, Rafal Majka, Adam Yates, Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates), Jai Hindley (Bora-Hansgrohe), Carlos Rodriguez (Ineos Grenadiers), Pello Bilbao (Bahrain Victorious), David Gaudu (Groupama-FDJ), Simon Yates, Chris Harper (Jayco-AlUla), Guillaume Martin (Cofidis) and Felix Gall (Ag2r-Citröen). The team of the yellow jersey led the charge up to col de Joux-Plane, the 250th hors-category climb of the Tour de France since the inception of the label in 1979. 5km before the top, Hindley couldn’t hold the pace set by Kuss, the American being followed by A. Yates, Pogacar, Vingegaard and Rodriguez. With 3.7km of climbing remaining, Pogacar attacked. The Slovenian remained 4’’ ahead of the Dane for two kilometres. Vingegaard made it across and sprinted to collect 8’’ time bonus and the lead in the KOM competition atop col de Joux-Plane. Rodriguez and Yates made the junction in the downhill. Rodriguez rode away solo with 8km to go and remained at the front till the end. He even moved one step up to take place in the top 3 instead of Hindley for one second.

Jai Hindley gewinnt ein paar Sekunden im Kampf um das Podium auf der ersten Alpenetappe der Tour de France

Am französischen Nationalfeiertag stand heute die erste Alpenetappe auf dem Programm der Tour de France. Eine große Ausreißergruppe setzte sich in der ersten Hälfte der Etappe erfolgreich vom Feld ab, während dort der ganze Fokus auf die Bergankunft am Grand Colombier gerichtet war. M. Kwiatkowski attackierte aus der Spitzengruppe etwa 8 km vor dem Ziel und feierte am Ende einen ungefährdeten Etappensieg. BORA – hansgrohe lieferte Jai Hindley perfekt am Fuß des Schlussanstiegs ab, bevor Emanuel Buchmann Jai bis sechs Kilometer vor dem Ziel unterstützen konnte. Rund 2 km vor dem Ende begannen die Attacken aus der Gruppe der Favoriten und T. Pogacar konnte sich noch den 3. Etappenrang sichern. Jai Hindley zeigte erneute eine starke Leistung in den Bergen und erreichte letztlich Rang sechs, wobei er auf seine direkten Konkurrenten im Kampf um das Podium ein paar Sekunden gutmachen konnte.

“Die Jungs haben mich super in den letzten Berg gebracht. Es war wieder sehr heiß und am Beginn des Anstiegs haben Nils und Emu mich gut mit Getränken und Eis versorgt. Ich habe mich ziemlich gut gefühlt, bin aber defensiv gefahren, da klar war, dass Pogacar am Ende noch attackieren würde. Ich konnte seinem Antritt nicht folgen, war aber nah dran. Das ist sicherlich ein gutes Zeichen und von da her bin ich zufrieden, denn ich konnte ein paar Sekunden auf einige andere Jungs gutmachen. Heute war aber nur die erste von drei schweren Bergetappen und jeder Tag kann entscheidend sein. Wir müssen also weiter fokussiert bleiben und jeden Tag bereit sein.” – Jai Hindley

“Für uns war das heute definitiv ein guter Tag. Die Jungs haben Jai sehr gut vor dem letzten Anstieg platziert, da stimmt das Timing jetzt. Nils war wie gestern wieder sehr stark. Seine Leistung war ebenfalls sehr gut und er konnte am Ende sogar ein paar Sekunden gegenüber Rodriguez gutmachen. Wir sind also happy. Kwiatkowski conquers Grand Colombier

The mountain top finish of Grand Colombier welcomed the second Tour de France stage victory of Michal Kwiatkowski after stage 17 in 2020, the seventh for Polish riders in the history, after Zenon Jaskula, Rafal Majka and Maciej Bodnar did so as well. The Ineos Grenadiers rider stayed away from the early escape to win solo before former breakaway companion Maxim Van Gils whereas Jonas Vingegaard maintained his overall lead by nine seconds.

LOTS OF ATTACKS BEFORE 19 RIDERS GO CLEAR

The start proper of stage 13 was given at 13.55 to 167 riders. After many unfruitful skirmishes, 19 riders took the lead after 26km of racing: Quentin Pacher (Groupama-FDJ) who initiated this move a few kilometres before, Michal Kwiatkowski (Ineos Grenadiers), Alberto Bettiol, James Shaw (EF Education-EasyPost), Kasper Asgreen (Soudal-Quick Step), Matej Mohoric, Fred Wright (Bahrain Victorious), Jasper Stuyven (Lidl-Trek), Adrien Petit, Mike Teunissen, Georg Zimmerman (Intermarché-Circus-Wanty), Nelson Oliveira (Movistar), Hugo Houle (Israel-PremierTech), Luca Mozzato (Arkea-Samsic), Maxim Van Gils (Lotto-Dstny), Cees Bol, Harold Tejada (Astana), Anthon Charmig (Uno-X), Pierre Latour (TotalEnergies). UAE Team Emirates was prompt to set the pace of the peloton. The time gap was 2’25’’ with 60km to go.

PACHER ALONE UP THE HILL, THEN KWIATKOWSKI

Teunissen won the intermediate sprint at Hauteville-Lompnès (km 87.3). Matteo Trentin, Mikkel Bjerg and Vegard Stake Laengen continued to do all the work at the head of the pack for UAE Team Emirates. Bol was the first rider dropped, followed by Petit who fought hard to try and come across. Latour who finished second at Puy de Dôme couldn’t hold the pace in a downhill with 35km remaining. The deficit of the peloton was 3’55’’ at the beginning of the 17.4km long ascent to Grand Colombier. Pacher rode away from the front group 16km before the summit. Tejada, Van Gils and Shaw brought him back with 12.8km to go. Kwiatkowski overhauled them and kept going solo one kilometre further.

POGACAR ATTACKS 400 METERS BEFORE THE END

Kwiatkowski had 3’15’’ lead over the peloton with 10km to go. It was reduced to 2’20’’ at the 5km to go mark. Adam Yates sped up with 3km remaining and split the 15-man yellow jersey group into pieces. Vingegaard remained vigilant and Kwiatkowski dealt with the strength he had kept to stay ahead and win 47’’ seconds before Van Gils, the only other breakaway rider who fended off Pogacar. Erneuter Ausreißersieg, während Jai Hindley die Alpen auf Rang drei der Gesamtwertung bei der Tour de France in Angriff nimmt

Eine weitere unvorhersehbare Etappe vor den großen Alpenpässen am Wochenende wurde von den Fahrern abermals für ein spektakuläres Rennen genutzt. Es dauerte mehr als 90 km, bevor sich eine Gruppe lösen konnte, und auf dem hügeligen Profil flog das Feld völlig auseinander. Jai Hindley war immer an der Seite des Gelben Trikots, während einige der Mitfavoriten um den Gesamtsieg teilweise mehr als drei Minuten abgehängt waren. Als die Spitzengruppe stand, beruhigte sich das Rennen etwas und das Feld lief wieder zusammen. Am Ende holte J. Izaguirre den Etappensieg aus der Spitzengruppe, während Jai sicher im Feld das Ziel erreichte und damit auf Rang drei der Gesamtwertung die Alpen in Angriff nimmt.

“Die Etappe wurde gefahren, als wäre die Tour morgen zu Ende. Zum Glück war es heute nicht ganz so heiß dafür was das Tempo unglaublich. Trotz der Anstiege wurde in den ersten beiden Rennstunden ein Schnitt von 47 km/h gefahren. Nils hatte einen wahnsinnig guten Tag und war die ganze Zeit bei Jai, was unglaublich wichtig war. Emu ist am Anfang hinter einen Sturz aufgehalten worden und war dann im zweiten Feld. Zum Glück konnte er später auch zurückkommen und gegen Ende waren wir ganz gut aufgestellt. Aber so ein Tag zehrt. An den Kräften der Fahrer und an den Nerven bei uns im Auto.” – Rolf Aldag, Sportlicher Leiter

Ion Izagirre doubles up

Inspired by the end of the 15-year drought for Cofidis and the end of the 5-year drought for Spain in terms of stage wins at the Tour de France, Ion Izagirre, 34, claimed his second stage win in Belleville-en-Beaujolais, seven years after his first one in Morzine as he emulated his team-mate Victor Lafay and his compatriot Pello Bilbao, a Basque rider like him who started with an exceptional motivation in Bilbao. Jonas Vingegaard retained the yellow jersey in an action packed stage in the vineyards.

CLASSICS SPECIALISTS ON THE MOVE

The start proper of stage 12 was given at 13.27 to 168 riders. One non-starter: Fabio Jakobsen (Soudal-Quick Step). Mads Pedersen (Lidl-Trek) was the first on the attack but no one wanted to go with him as he’d be hard to beat from a breakaway group. He was brought back by the compact bunch after 3km and that led to successive and unfruitful attacks for more than an hour. Matej Mohoric (Bahrain Victorious), Julian Alaphilippe (Soudal-Quick Step), Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Deceuninck) and Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma) were among the specialists of the big classics eager to break away. David De La Cruz (Astana) crashed out in a downhill to St-Vincent-de-Reins (km 28). At km 45, Van Aert managed to go clear but he was brought back after 8km alone in the lead.

15 RIDERS IN THE LEAD

A strong leading group was eventually formed at half way into stage 12 by 13 riders in several waves: Tiesj Benoot (Jumbo-Visma), Thibaut Pinot (Groupama-FDJ), Andrey Amador (EF Education-EasyPost), Mads Pedersen (Lidl-Trek), Van der Poel (Alpecin-Deceuninck), Guillaume Martin, Ion Izagirre (Cofidis), Ruben Guerreiro, Matteo Jorgenson (Movistar), Dylan Teuns (Israel-PremierTech), Victor Campenaerts (Lotto-Dstny), Tobias Halland Johanessen (Uno-X) and Mathieu Burgaudeau (TotalEnergies). Alaphilippe (Soudal-Quick Step) and Jasper Stuyven (Lidl-Trek) came across on the line of the intermediate sprint at Régnié-Durette where Pedersen scored 20 points in first position. The peloton was divided in three groups with the likes of Sepp Kuss, Mikel Landa, Emanuel Buchmann and Louis Meintjes among the stragglers, which inclined AG2R-Citroën to pace the yellow jersey group in order to get Felix Gall move up on GC. Van der Poel and Amador rode away from the leading group with 55km to go. The Dutchman sped up and continued solo up the côte de Montmain.

IZAGIRRE ALONE IN THE LAST 31KM

32km before the end, Pinot and Jorgenson caught up with Van der Poel. It became an 8-man group with the reinforcement of Martin, I. Izagirre, Benoot, Guerreiro and Burgaudeau. Izagirre rode away by himself 31km before the finish. After the Kuss group caught up with the yellow jersey group, Ineos Grenadiers set the pace of that main peloton as Pinot was threatening the fourth place overall of Carlos Rodriguez. Izagirre reached an advantage of 50’’ with 15km to go. He forged on as the cooperation in the chasing group wasn’t great. Jorgenson and Burgaudeau attacked with 3km to go to round out the stage podium. The yellow jersey peloton crossed the line 4’14’’ after the Spanish winner.

Die 11. Etappe der Tour de France war eine der letzten Chancen für die Sprinter im Feld. Entsprechend wurde das Rennen auch kontrolliert, als sich ein Trio absetzen konnte. Der letzte der Ausreißer wurde 8 km vor dem Ziel gestellt und alles war für einen Sprint angerichtet. BORA – hansgrohe zeigte sich mit 20 km an der Spitze des Feldes, um Jai Hindley aus Schwierigkeiten zu halten, aber auch, um Jordi Meeus vor dem Finale zu platzieren. Regen erschwerte die letzte Phase des Rennens und am Ende sicherte sich J. Philipsen seinen bereits vierten Tagessieg. Jordi Meeus war an der 500 m Marke in guter Position, wurde dann aber in Richtung Absperrung gestoßen und konnte gerade noch einen Sturz vermeiden, um letztlich Rang 11 zu belegen.

“Das Finale war heute besonders nervös, weil es am Ende auch noch geregnet hat. Ich war an den letzten Kreisverkehren sehr gut platziert und hatte eigentlich auch das richtige Hinterrad. Dann ging aber das Tempo runter und einige Fahrer kamen von hinten. Ich wurde Richtung Barriere gedrückt und habe einen Zuschauer berührt, ich konnte gerade noch einen Sturz vermeiden. Ich habe noch einmal versucht, in Position zu kommen, aber dann hat sich Pedersen unter meinem Arm verhakt und ich habe wieder die Balance verloren. Da war der Sprint für mich zu Ende. Es ist frustrierend, denn bisher bin ich nie in eine Position gekommen, um einen freien Sprint zu fahren.” – Jordi Meeus

Jasper the master

Jasper Philipsen took place in the modern history of the Tour de France as he became the second active rider with at least four stage wins in a single Tour after Mark Cavendish as he outclassed Dylan Groenewegen and Phil Bauhaus in Moulins where Jonas Vingegaard collected the 17th Maillot Jaune of his career.

AMADOR, LOUVEL AND OSS AT THE FRONT

The start proper of stage 11 was given to 169 riders at 13.26. Andrey Amador (EF Education-EasyPost) was first out of the peloton, although at a slow speed. Two riders joined him: Tony Gallopin (Lidl-Trek) and Matîs Louvel (Arkea-Samsic). Gallopin sat up but Daniel Oss (TotalEnergies) substituted him as he made the jump. This leading trio easily took some advantage to reach a maximum of 3’20’’ at km 25 where Alpecin-Deceuninck decided to take the responsibilities to pace the peloton. The teams of the top sprinters left with no win in the first four bunch gallops, namely Jayco-AlUla, Lotto-Dstny and Soudal-Quick, respectively for Dylan Groenewegen, Caleb Ewan and Fabio Jakobsen.

OSS UNTIL 13.5KM TO GO

The peloton delayed the regrouping as long as possible but crosswinds led GC teams to speed up in their move to position their captains close to the helm. With 54km to go, Louvel sat up, so did Amador 5km further. Oss remained alone. He forged on even when the rain made its first appearance on the roads of the Tour de France this year. The Italian veteran was reeled in 13.5km before the end. Soudal-Quick positioned Fabio Jakobsen at the front with 10km remaining.

IT’S PHILIPSEN AGAIN

Jumbo-Visma took over from the sprinters’ teams, firstly to keep Jonas Vingegaard out of trouble until 3km to go, secondly to pave the way for Wout van Aert. Dylan Groenewegen got the best lead out and launched the sprint but Philipsen was smart to follow his slipstream in the absence of Mathieu van der Poel in the finale this time around. The Belgian passed him to score his fourth stage win this year.

Ausreißer entscheiden verrückte 10. Etappe bei der Tour de France

Nach dem ersten Ruhetag entbrannte zum Beginn der 10. Etappe eine wahre Schlacht im Peloton. Nach 30 km war das Feld in mehrere Gruppen zersplittert und einige der GC-Favoriten befanden sich mehrere Minuten hinter der Spitze. Jai Hindley und Emanuel Buchmann konnten sich immer in der ersten Gruppe halten und als sich das Rennen etwas beruhigte, setzten sich 14 Fahrer vom Feld ab. Hinter der Spitze lief das Feld wieder zusammen, während vorne ein Kampf um den Tagessieg entbrannte. Am Ende sicherte sich P. Bilbao den Sieg aus einer 6-Mann-Gruppe und rückt in die Top Ten der Gesamtwertung auf. Jai Hindley beendete die Etappe sicher im Feld und liegt weiter auf dem dritten Gesamtrang.

“Das war ein richtig harter Tag. Nach dem Ruhetag weiß man nie so genau, wie es läuft und dann kam auch noch die Hitze dazu. Die ersten eineinhalb Stunden waren brutal, ich denke, jeder war da am Limit. Ich war echt froh, als die Gruppe weggefahren ist, auch wenn Bilbao dabei war. Er hat den Sieg definitiv verdient und auch von mir Gratulation dazu. Meine Beine wurden während der Etappe immer besser und die Jungs haben mich auch gut unterstützt. Am Anfang war Emu bei mir, als das Feld zusammenlief, haben vor allem Marco und Bob einen super Job gemacht. Wenn es so heiß ist, ist die Unterstützung besonders wichtig, denn man braucht genug Flaschen und Eis. Wir können mit dem Tag zufrieden sein, aber man sieht, dass bei der Tour jede Etappe entscheidend sein kann.” – Jai Hindley

Bilbao was on a mission since… Bilbao

A star of the Grand Départ in Bilbao on his home soil in the Basque Country, Pello Bilbao claimed his first ever Tour de France victory in Issoire at the end a very hard fought breakaway day. He put an end to a 99-stage drought of Spanish wins (since Omar Fraile in Mende in 2018) as he outsprinted Georg Zimmermann and Ben O’Connor. The 33 year old dedicated his victory to his team-late Gino Mäder who tragically passed away at the Tour de Suisse last month. He moved up to fifth overall while Jonas Vingegaard who went in a breakaway along with Tadej Pogacar in the early part of the race retained the yellow jersey.

VINGEGAARD AND POGACAR AND IN AN EARLY BREAKAWAY

The start proper of stage 10 has been given to 169 riders at 13.17. Following several skirmishes, a group of 22 riders was formed at the front after the col de la Moréno crested firstly by Anton Charmig (Uno-X). Interestingly, Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) and Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) were part of it, along with Simon Yates (Jayco-AlUla) and Romain Bardet (DSM-Firmenich). The duellists sat up at some stage, 13 riders remained in the lead but the peloton reacted strongly and several top riders got dropped, including Bardet, Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma) and David Gaudu (Groupama-FDJ). After the col de Guéry (cat. 3, km 27.3) where Wout Poels (Bahrain Victorious) passed first in front of Krists Neilands (Israel-Premier Tech), Julian Alaphilippe (Soudal-Quick Step) and Matej Mohoric (Bahrain Victorious) rode away in the downhill. They didn’t get the green light.

14 RIDERS IN THE LEAD, INCLUDING BILBAO AND ALAPHILIPPE

Kasper Asgreen (Soudal-Quick Step), Georg Zimmermann (Intermarché-Circus-Wanty), Nick Schultz (Israel-Premier Tech), Esteban Chaves (EF Education-EasyPost), Pello Bilbao (Bahrain Victorious), Warren Barguil (Arkea-Samsic), Mattias Skjelmose (Lidl-Trek) formed a new leading group at km 41. Ben O’Connor (AG2R-Citroën), Harold Tejada (Astana), Alaphilippe (Soudal-Quick Step), Neilands (Israel-Premier Tech), Antonio Pedrero (Movistar), Anthony Perez (Cofidis), Michal Kwiatkowski (Ineos Grenadiers) launched a counter-attack. Once the main peloton slowed down, the Gaudu-Bardet-Van Aert group managed to get back on. Asgreen lost contact and was substituted in the 7-man escape by O’Connor who jumped by himself. The regrouping of the 14 men occurred with 86km to go, after which Chaves rode away solo up the hill of Saint-Victor-la-Rivière.

TWO STRONG ATTACKS BY KRISTS NEILANDS

Neilands rode away solo with 53km to go in order to keep the chances of the escape alive while Alpecin-Deceuninck and Jayco-AlUla were swapping turns at the head of the peloton as the deficit had gone down from 3 to 2 minutes. Van Aert and Van der Poel escaped from the peloton in a downhill with 46km to go. They were successively brought back by the pack led by Ineos Grenadiers while Neilands had gone away by himself once again with 33km remaining. The Latvian was brought back at the 3km to go mark. O’Connor tried to avoid a sprint finish with 1.8km to go but he was marked. Bilbao and Zimmermann took an advantage in the last straight line. They were also reeled in but Bilbao still had some speed in his legs to win. His best result at the Tour de France so far was second at Bagnères-de-Bigorre in 2019.

Spektakel am Puy de Dome: Jai Hindely verliert ein paar Sekunden, bleibt aber auf Rang 3 der Gesamtwertung der Tour de France

Mit dem Puy de Dome kehrte nach 35 Jahren heute einer der ikonischen Anstiege der Tour ins Programm zurück. Eine große Fluchtgruppe setzte sich früh vom Feld ab und hatte schnell einen Vorsprung von mehr als 10 Minuten. Damit war auch klar, dass der Etappensieg unter den Ausreißern zu finden sein würde. Am Ende holte sich M. Woods den Sieg, während dahinter eine weitere Schlacht der Favoriten um den Gesamtsieg entbrannte. Jai Hindley befand sich in einer kleinen Gruppe am Beginn des härtesten Teils des Schlussanstieges etwa 4 km vor dem Ziel. Einen Kilometer später kam er in Schwierigkeiten und musste von der 5-Mann-Gruppe der Favoriten abreißen lassen. Er fand aber einen guten Rhythmus und konnte seine direkten Konkurrenten immer im Blickfeld halten. T. Pogacar war heute der stärkste und distanzierte J. Vingegaard um 8 Sekunden. Jai verlor auf den Slowenen 1:14 und verteidigte damit seinen 3. Rang in der Gesamtwertung.

“Es war ein harter Tag und ein brutaler Schlussanstieg, steil und ohne Möglichkeit, sich zu verstecken. Die Temperaturen haben das Rennen noch schwieriger gemacht und ich habe am Puy de Dome gelitten. Heute war nicht mein bester Tag und ich habe gespürt, dass ich mein eigenes Rennen fahren muss. Ich habe nicht versucht, so lange wie möglich dranzubleiben, sondern habe die Gruppe ziehen lassen und bin meinen eigenen Rhythmus gefahren. Das hat gut funktioniert und ich bin mit dem Ergebnis eigentlich recht zufrieden.” – Jai Hindley

“Es ist immer schwierig, nach ein paar Flachetappen am Ende den Rhythmus für so einen harten Anstieg zu finden. Die Jungs haben aber wieder einen tollen Job gemacht, um Jai in den letzten Anstieg zu bringen. Dort ging es heute einfach nur um die Beine. Jai hatte nicht seinen besten Tag, aber er ist immer noch ein sehr gutes Rennen gefahren. Sein Rhythmus war gut und er konnte den Rückstand in Grenzen halten. Woods conquers the iconic volcano

Michael Woods won stage 9 to the Puy de Dôme from a breakaway that went from the gun. The duel between Tadej Pogacar and Jonas Vingegaard took place in the last 1.5km of racing. The Slovenian reclaimed 8 seconds but the Dane retained the yellow jersey.

14 RIDERS IN THE LEAD

169 riders took the start of stage 9 in Raymond Poulidor’s village Saint-Léonard-de-Noblat at 13.41. 14 riders took off quickly: Clément Berthet (AG2R-Citroën), Michael Woods and Guillaume Boivin (Israel-Premier Tech), Matteo Jorgenson and Gorka Izagirre (Movistar), Matej Mohoric (Bahrain Victorious), Neilson Powless (EF Education-EasyPost), Pierre Latour and Mathieu Burgaudeau (TotalEnergies), David De La Cruz and Alexey Lutsenko (Astana), Victor Campenaerts (Lotto-Dstny), Jonas Abrahamsen and Jonas Gregaard (Uno-X). The peloton chased hard for a while but gave up at km 20 when they brought Mattias Skjelmose (Lidl-Trek) and Alberto Bettiol (EF Education-EasyPost) back. The time difference was 6’ at the intermediate sprint of lake of Vassivière (km 30.4) where Abrahamsen anticipated his breakaway companions.

JORGENSON ON THE MOVE
A time gap of 10’50’’ was posted atop côte de Felletin (km 74.8) where Powless passed first. The American was back on his mission to win the polka dot jersey this year. It was 11’40’’ when Boivin was the first rider to escape from the front group. He was reeled in after four kilometres alone in the lead. His initiative was followed by several skirmishes. Jorgenson road away 47km before the end. Mohoric, Burgaudeau, Powless and De La Cruz chased him down. They were fifteen seconds behind when De La Cruz had to stop and get a new bike because of a mechanical.

POGACAR GAINS 8 SECONDS
With 3km to go, Jorgenson was 1’20’’ ahead as Mohoric distanced his two companions. Woods made it across by himself and overhauled the Slovenian before the American. He rode the last 450 metres by himself to become the first non-European winner at Puy de Dôme. Pogacar sped up with 1.5km to go. Vingegaard reacted but the white jersey managed to distance the yellow jersey 600 metres before the line. Pogacar reclaimed eight seconds but Vingegaard retained the overall lead by 17 seconds before the first rest day.
