Mit Brugge – De Panne versprach der Klassikerkalender heute eine der wenigen Chancen für die Sprintspezialisten. 198km von Brügge nach De Panne in Westflandern, ungewöhnlich wenig Wind und kein Niederschlag – perfekte Verhältnisse für einen Showdown der Sprinter. Im sehr hektischen Finale war Danny van Poppel perfekt positioniert, eröffnete den Sprint und sicherte sich beim Sieg von J. Philipsen Rang 3.

Reaktionen im Ziel

„Es war ein Tag, der ganz im Zeichen der Sprinter stand. Wir haben den ganzen Tag viel gearbeitet. Auf dem letzten Kilometer bekam ich per Funk die Info, dass Sam nicht mehr da ist und ich sprinten soll. Ich wollte dann mindestens unter Top 10 kommen, um nach der vielen Arbeit der Mannschaft auch mit einem Ergebnis nach Hause zu fahren. Die Lücke war richtig gut, aber Jasper und Tim waren am Ende einfach schneller. Ich bin echt happy, hier noch auf dem Podium gelandet zu sein. 10km vor dem Ziel wurde ich etwas abgedräng, konnte einen Sturz vermeiden, war aber ganz am Ende des Feldes. Ich sah es als eine kleine Herausforderung, mich wieder an die Spitze zu kämpfen und dabei meine Radbeherrschung voll auszunutzen.“ Danny van Poppel

„Bis Kilometer 180 verlief für uns alles nach Plan, danach wurde es extrem hektisch und chaotisch. Unser Kapitän Sam Welsford hatte heute nicht die besten Beine, so entschieden wir uns, im Finale auf Danny van Poppel zu setzen. Danny hat mich heute wirklich beeindruckt: 10km vor dem Ziel kann er einen Sturz gerade noch vermeiden, kämpft sich durch das komplette Feld zurück an die Spitze und sprintet dann noch auf das Podium – Chapeau!“ Heinrich Haussler, Sportlicher Leiter

Ben Zwiehoff beendet Tour of Türkiye auf Platz 2

Plätze 2 und 4 in der Gesamtwertung, ein Etappensieg und der Gewinn der Mannschaftswertung – es war eine erfolgreiche Tour of Türkiye für BORA – hansgrohe.

Das Klassement wurde bereits am dritten Tag mit der schweren Bergankunft zum Babadağ gemacht. Ben Zwiehoff kletterte sowohl dort als auch in der Gesamtwertung auf Platz 2. Diesen gab er bis zum Schlusstag in Istanbul nicht mehr auf. Für Zwiehoff ist es nach dem 2. Rang bei der Czech Tour bereits das zweite Podium am Ende einer Rundfahrt in dieser Saison.

Ben Zwiehoff: „Ich bin sehr zufrieden mit meinem zweiten Platz. Uns war klar, dass es sehr schwer werden würde, Lutsenko noch aus dem Trikot zu fahren. Aber wir haben alles versucht und jeden Tag immer wieder angegriffen. Insgesamt war es ein Super-Rennen für uns. Nicht umsonst haben wir die Teamwertung gewonnen und gezeigt, dass wir eine superstarke Truppe sind.“

Florian Lipowitz (4.) und Anton Palzer (10.) runden für BORA – hansgrohe das sehr gute Teamergebnis in der Türkei ab, das mit dem Gewinn der Mannschaftswertung belohnt wird. Für Aufsehen hat auch der Doppelsieg des Teams auf der 5. Etappe gesorgt. Nico Denz setzte sich im anspruchsvollen Finale von Bodrum vor Matt Walls durch.

Bernie Eisel, Sportlicher Leiter bei der Tour of Türkiye: „Wir können ein positives Fazit zu diesem Saisonabschluss hier in der Türkei ziehen. Die Etappen waren herausfordernd, aber die Jungs sind sehr gut gefahren. Auch heute auf der Schlussetappe haben wir noch einmal angegriffen und alles probiert. Mit dem Etappensieg und drei Mann in den Top10 haben wir die Rundfahrt geprägt.“

Philipsen holt vierten Etappensieg, während Jordi Meeus gerade noch einen Sturz vermeiden kann im Sprint der 11. Etappe der Tour de France

Die 11. Etappe der Tour de France war eine der letzten Chancen für die Sprinter im Feld. Entsprechend wurde das Rennen auch kontrolliert, als sich ein Trio absetzen konnte. Der letzte der Ausreißer wurde 8 km vor dem Ziel gestellt und alles war für einen Sprint angerichtet. BORA – hansgrohe zeigte sich mit 20 km an der Spitze des Feldes, um Jai Hindley aus Schwierigkeiten zu halten, aber auch, um Jordi Meeus vor dem Finale zu platzieren. Regen erschwerte die letzte Phase des Rennens und am Ende sicherte sich J. Philipsen seinen bereits vierten Tagessieg. Jordi Meeus war an der 500 m Marke in guter Position, wurde dann aber in Richtung Absperrung gestoßen und konnte gerade noch einen Sturz vermeiden, um letztlich Rang 11 zu belegen.

“Das Finale war heute besonders nervös, weil es am Ende auch noch geregnet hat. Ich war an den letzten Kreisverkehren sehr gut platziert und hatte eigentlich auch das richtige Hinterrad. Dann ging aber das Tempo runter und einige Fahrer kamen von hinten. Ich wurde Richtung Barriere gedrückt und habe einen Zuschauer berührt, ich konnte gerade noch einen Sturz vermeiden. Ich habe noch einmal versucht, in Position zu kommen, aber dann hat sich Pedersen unter meinem Arm verhakt und ich habe wieder die Balance verloren. Da war der Sprint für mich zu Ende. Es ist frustrierend, denn bisher bin ich nie in eine Position gekommen, um einen freien Sprint zu fahren.” – Jordi Meeus

Jasper the master

Jasper Philipsen took place in the modern history of the Tour de France as he became the second active rider with at least four stage wins in a single Tour after Mark Cavendish as he outclassed Dylan Groenewegen and Phil Bauhaus in Moulins where Jonas Vingegaard collected the 17th Maillot Jaune of his career.

AMADOR, LOUVEL AND OSS AT THE FRONT

The start proper of stage 11 was given to 169 riders at 13.26. Andrey Amador (EF Education-EasyPost) was first out of the peloton, although at a slow speed. Two riders joined him: Tony Gallopin (Lidl-Trek) and Matîs Louvel (Arkea-Samsic). Gallopin sat up but Daniel Oss (TotalEnergies) substituted him as he made the jump. This leading trio easily took some advantage to reach a maximum of 3’20’’ at km 25 where Alpecin-Deceuninck decided to take the responsibilities to pace the peloton. The teams of the top sprinters left with no win in the first four bunch gallops, namely Jayco-AlUla, Lotto-Dstny and Soudal-Quick, respectively for Dylan Groenewegen, Caleb Ewan and Fabio Jakobsen.

OSS UNTIL 13.5KM TO GO

The peloton delayed the regrouping as long as possible but crosswinds led GC teams to speed up in their move to position their captains close to the helm. With 54km to go, Louvel sat up, so did Amador 5km further. Oss remained alone. He forged on even when the rain made its first appearance on the roads of the Tour de France this year. The Italian veteran was reeled in 13.5km before the end. Soudal-Quick positioned Fabio Jakobsen at the front with 10km remaining.

IT’S PHILIPSEN AGAIN

Jumbo-Visma took over from the sprinters’ teams, firstly to keep Jonas Vingegaard out of trouble until 3km to go, secondly to pave the way for Wout van Aert. Dylan Groenewegen got the best lead out and launched the sprint but Philipsen was smart to follow his slipstream in the absence of Mathieu van der Poel in the finale this time around. The Belgian passed him to score his fourth stage win this year.

Erneut Top Ten für Jordi Meeus auf der 7. Etappe der Tour de France

Nach den beiden schweren Pyrenäen-Etappen hatten heute die Sprinter wieder eine Chance auf der 7. Etappe der Tour de France nach Bordeaux. Ein Solist prägte das Rennen über weite Strecken, bevor ein Duo nach dem Zwischensprint des Tages zur Spitze aufschließen konnte. Die beiden frischen Fahrer konnten den ursprünglichen Ausreißer dann auch schnell abhängen, aber auch sie hatten gegen ein heranstürmendes Feld am Ende keine Chance. Es kam zum erwarteten Massensprint und Danny Van Poppel setzten sich mit Jordi Meeus auf dem letzten Kilometer an die Spitze. Allerdings war Jordi am Ende beim dritten Etappensieg von J. Philipsen leider etwas eingebaut und erreicht am Ende Rang sechs.

„Unser Timing war heute nahezu perfekt. Danny hat mich perfekt auf dem letzten Kilometer nach vorne gebracht, aber als er sich zurückfallen ließ, habe ich von links eine Welle bekommen und musste bremsen. Bei so einem Sprint ist es fast unmöglich, dann wieder Tempo aufzunehmen und so hat es nur für Rang sechs gereicht. Ich bin etwas enttäuscht, denn heute war definitiv mehr drin.“ – Jordi Meeus

Danny war mit Jordi zum richtigen Zeitpunkt vorne, aber Jordi hat dann eine Welle bekommen und hat seinen ganzen Speed verloren. Da war das Rennen gelaufen. Unstoppable Philipsen

Jasper Philipsen won the third bunch sprint of the 110th Tour de France, making it three out of three as he deprived Mark Cavendish from the record-breaking 35th stage victory of his career. It’s his fifth win in two years. The Belgian is definitely the current dominating sprinter. He also extended his lead in the points classification whereas Jonas Vingegaard retained the overall lead.

GUGLIELMI, POOR LONESOME COWBOY

The start of stage 7 was given to 172 riders at 13.23. Simon Guglielmi (Arkea-Samsic) was first on the attack right after flag off. Jonas Abrahamsen (Uno-X), Nelson Oliveira (Movistar) and Mathieu Burgaudeau (TotalEnergies) caught up with him but gave up one after each other, leaving the Frenchman alone in the lead at km 4. Guglielmi’s maximum advantage was 7’15’’ at km 18, after which Alpecin-Deceunink and Lotto-Dstny got organised at the helm of the peloton. Guglielmi won the intermediate sprint, followed in that order by Biniam Girmay (Intermarché-Circus-Wanty), Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Deceuninck) and Bryan Coquard (Cofidis).

LATOUR AND PETERS TAKE OVER

79km before the end, Pierre Latour (TotalEnergies) and Nans Peters (AG2R-Citroën) attacked from the bunch. Five kilometres further, they caught up with the lone leader. The time difference with the peloton was 50’’ with 50km to go. Guglielmi couldn’t hold the pace in the côte de Béguey (cat. 4) where Latour passed first with 39km remaining. Guglielmi was logically awarded the combativity prize. Latour and Peters forged on until they got reeled in the streets of Bordeaux, Peters with 6km to go and Latour 3.5km before the finish line.

PHILIPSEN PIPS CAVENDISH ON THE LINE

Alpecin-Deceuninck gave Philipsen a very good lead out in the last 2km. Mark Cavendish (Astana) tried his luck by launching from far out but the Belgian wasn’t impressed and had enough left in the tank for a last kick that makes him a triple stage winner this year. Biniam Girmay (Intermarché-Circus-Wanty) rounded out the podium as he reached the top 3 for the first time at the Tour de France.

Sprintchaos in Nogaro: Danny Van Poppel bei zweitem Tour de France Massensprint auf Rang sechs

Auch auf der heutigen, vierten Etappe der Tour de France von Dax nach Nogaro wurde ein Massensprint erwartet. Die Sprinterteams ließen von Anfang an keinerlei Zweifel aufkommen, dass sie das Rennen auch heute kontrollieren würden. Es dauerte mehr als 60km, bevor sich zwei Fahrer absetzen konnten; ihr Vorsprung erreichte aber nie mehr als eine Minute. Es kam also zum erneuten Showdown der Sprinter. BORA – hansarohe setzte sich heute später als gestern an die Spitze des Feldes, allerdings kam es auf den letzten zwei Kilometern gleich zu mehreren Stürzen, die die Ordnung der Sprintzüge durcheinander brachten. Zum Glück kamen alle Fahrer der deutschen Mannschaft sicher ins Ziel, beim Sieg von J. Philipsen errang Danny Van Poppel am Ende Rang sechs.

„Heute war das Tempo wirklich ganz easy und bis zum Sprint ist nicht viel passiert. Dann auf der Rennstrecke kam es zum Sturz von Jacobsen. Ich hatte Glück, denn er ist nach rechts abgebogen, aber Jordi wurde behindert und wir haben uns an diesem Punkt verloren. Das Team hat mir dann gesagt, dass ich es versuchen soll. Ich habe versucht lange zu warten, denn es war auf der Zielgeraden Gegenwind. Rang sechs ist nicht schlecht, aber wir sind hier, um mit Jordi um einen Sieg zu kämpfen. Eigentlich war unser Timing heute auch schon viel besser, aber durch die Stürze war die gute Vorarbeit leider vergeblich.“ – Danny Van Poppel

„Das Wichtigste ist, dass wir ohne Sturz durchgekommen sind. Die Etappe war sehr einfach und das ist dann oft das Problem. Wenn am Ende ein Sprint wartet sind alle sehr frisch und jeder kann reinhalten. Es ist natürlich schade, wenn sich dann Fahrer verletzten. Jordi war leider genau in der Nähe als Jakobsen zu Boden ging, er ist wohl über das Rad gesprungen und hatte da sicher Glück. Wir haben zu Danny dann gesagt, dass er es versuchen soll und Rang sechs ist nicht schlecht. Mit Jordi am Rad wäre da heute viel möglich gewesen, aber wie gesagt, es hätte für Jordi auch schlimmer kommen können. Four in a row for Philipsen

From the start in Dax —home town of the legendary sprinter André Darrigade, who won 22 Tour de France stages— to the finish on the Circuit Paul-Armagnac race track in Nogaro, everything pointed to a sprinter taking the spoils in stage 4, sandwiched between three gruelling stages in the Basque Country and the race’s first foray into the Pyrenees. The super-speedsters did not let this golden opportunity go to waste. Barrelling down the flat roads of the Landes and Gers departments, the sprinters‘ teams kept a tight rein on a stage in which the breakaway took its sweet time to form. The Norman duo of Benoît Cosnefroy and Anthony Delaplace took off with 86 kilometres to go and added some excitement to the race before getting reeled in about half an hour before the finish. The European champion, Fabio Jakobsen, was among those who hit the tarmac in the crash-marred finale, leaving Jasper Philipsen to surge to his fourth Tour de France bunch sprint win on a trot, one day after raising his arms in triumph in Bayonne and a year after coming out on top in Carcassonne and on the Champs-Élysées. It was a double whammy for the Belgian rider, who cemented his status as the king of sprints and wrested the green jersey from Victor Lafay, while Adam Yates stayed in yellow.

The 174-strong peloton mustered under a cloudy sky in Place de la Fontaine-Chaude ahead of stage 4 on Tuesday. The start in Dax was an opportunity to pay tribute to André Darrigade, a 22-time Tour de France stage winner. Known as the „Landes Greyhound“, the 94-year-old former sprinter took the chance to pose with Victor Lafay, clad in the same green jersey that the former world champion claimed twice in his career (1959 and 1961). The official start came at 1:22 pm, following a 4.8 km neutralised section. The breakaway specialists, perhaps intimidated by the long odds, were conspicuous by their absence at the beginning.

Philipsen finds his bearings

The pack was eager to catch a breather following three leg-breaking stages and with the Pyrenees just 24 hours away. There were no real attacks in the first 95 kilometres, covered at a rather sluggish average speed of 37 km/h. The first move came 86 kilometres before the line, shortly after Jasper Philipsen clinched the intermediate sprint at Notre-Dame-des-Cyclistes. Benoît Cosnefroy (AG2R Citroën) fired the opening salvo and Anthony Delaplace (Arkéa–Samsic) latched onto his wheel.

Two French riders spice up the finale

The Norman duo soon increased their advantage to one minute, but the sprinters‘ teams put their foot down straight away. 25 kilometres before the line, the pack swallowed the two Frenchmen right after the only categorised climb of the day, the category 4 Côte de Dému, where Delaplace had been first over the top. The juggernaut continued to pick up steam and no-one even attempted to frustrate the inevitable bunch sprint as the race blasted onto the Circuit Paul-Armagnac race track.

Philipsen keeps a resurgent Ewan at bay

Alexis Renard led Bryan Coquard (Cofidis) onto the home straight with 750 metres to go, but the French sprinter had to settle for fourth place, behind the unstoppable Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin–Deceuninck) and others. Once again, Mathieu van der Poel set up the perfect lead-out for the Belgian, but this time round, Philipsen had to dig deep to stay clear of Caleb Ewan (Lotto Dstny), who built on his third place yesterday to finish second today. Stage 4 was Philipsen’s second win in as many days, after his triumph in Bayonne, but also his fourth consecutive success in bunch sprints in the Tour de France, coming a year after he claimed victory in Carcassonne and on the Champs-Élysées.
