Yellow glory for Niewiadoma

The 8th and final stage of the 2024 Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift produced a thrilling finale on Alpe d’Huez with Kasia Niewiadoma (Canyon//SRAM Racing) securing the GC win as Demi Vollering (SD Worx-Protime) took the stage victory. Vollering rode incredibly to win the stage, followed across the line by Pauliena Rooijakkers (Fenix-Deceuninck) at 4”, with Evita Muzic (FDJ – SUEZ) third at 1’01” and Niewiadoma fourth, also at 1’01”, which was enough to secure the Yellow Jersey and GC glory for Niewiadoma by just 4”. Vollering therefore concluded the race in second place overall, with Rooijakkers completing the podium in third (10”) and Muzic fourth (1’21”).

A final battle commences
Shayla Gutierrez (Movistar), Barbara Malcotti (Human Powered Health), Marit Raaijmakers (Human Powered Health) and Josie Talbot (Cofidis) did not start the last stage. There were therefore 116 riders on the road as the peloton rolled out of Le Grand-Bornand ready for the 149.9 km challenge on the way to Alpe d’Huez, via Col du Glandon.

A big breakaway group
Ahead of the first categorised climb of the day – Col de Tamie (km 27.2, Cat. 2, 9.5km at 4%) – a strong 22 rider breakaway formed, comprising Mischa Bredewold, Christine Majerus, Blanka Vas, Lorena Wiebes (SD Worx-Protime), Franziska Koch (dsm-firmenich PostNL), Lucinda Brand (Lidl-Trek), Justine Ghekiere (AG Insurance-Soudal Team), Loes Adegeest (FDJ-Suez), Riejanne Markus, Fem Van Empel (Visma | Lease a Bike), Silke Smulders (Liv-AlUla-Jayco), Alice Maria Arzuffi (Ceratizit-WNT), Kristen Faulkner, Noemi Ruegg (EF-Oatly-Cannondale), Liane Lippert, Olivia Baril (Movistar), Silvia Persico, Erica Magnaldi (UAE Team ADQ), Katrine Aalerud, Mie Bjorndal Ottestad (Uno-X Mobilty), Camille Fahy and Celia Le Mouel (St-Michel-Mavic-Auber93).

Ghekiere presses on
At the top of the Tamie climb Ghekiere strengthened her position in the Mountain classification reaching the summit first, followed by Bredewold, Majerus and Adegeest. By the time the breakaway riders reached the intermediate sprint at km 53.4 at Aiguebelle (Val D’arc) they had a 2’50” gap over the bunch. Wiebes won the sprint, ahead of Majerus and Barrel. Approaching the Col du Glandon (km 98.5, HC,19.7km at 7.2%) the peloton accelerated and the gap to the break was quickly reduced to 1’30” as the climb started.

Moves on the Glandon
The likes of Faulkner, Fahy, Wiebes and Persico were dropped by the breakaway early on the Col du Glandon climb. 1’00” was the gap from the peloton to the front of the race 15.5 km from the summit of the Glandon, with Lippert, Brand, Magnaldi, Aalerud, Smulders, Arzuffi and Adegeest riding clear of the remainder of the breakaway, their former companions in the lead group dropping back into the bunch on the climb. Ghekiere was one of those who fell backwards on the ascent, then also dropping behind the peloton having expended so much energy in her epic win yesterday.

Vollering sets the race alight
Valentina Cavallar (Arkea – B&B Hotels Women) attacked from the main group and went solo at the front, overtaking what remained of the breakaway 5km from the summit of the Glandon. The race then exploded as Demi Vollering (SD Worx-Protime) distanced the wearer of the Yellow Jersey Kasia Niewiadoma (Canyon//SRAM Racing) with her first attack, 2.5 kilometers from the top of the Col du Glandon, with only Pauliena Rooijakkers (Fenix-Deceuninck) managing to follow the 2023 Tour winner, as they joined Cavallar at the front. Those three went over the summit 57” ahead of Niewiadoma, who was in a group with Gigante, Realini, Muzic, Brand and Kerbaol. As Puck Pieterse (Fenix-Deceuninck) was not one of the point-scoring first 8 riders over Glandon summit it confirmed the polka dot jersey for Ghekiere.

Glorious Ghekiere conquers Grand-Bornand

Justine Ghekiere (AG Insurance – Soudal Team) triumphed on Stage 7 of the 2024 Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift, riding strongly to the finish at Le Grand-Bornand to cross the line 1’15” ahead of second-placed Maeva Squiban (Arkea – B&B Hotels Women). Ghekiere performed brilliantly in the polka dot jersey in the breakaway to strengthen her position in the Mountain classification and win the stage, with Squiban attacking from the main GC group behind her on the final climb but ultimately unable to reach her. Demi Vollering (SD Worx-Protime) concluded the stage third, though she was closely followed over the line by Kasia Niewiadoma (Canyon//SRAM Racing) in the Yellow Jersey, both riders finishing 1’23” behind the stage winner. Ahead of Sunday’s final stage from Le Grand-Bornand to Alpe d’Huez, via Col du Glandon, Niewiadoma still controls the Yellow Jersey, with a 27” advantage over Puck Pieterse (Fenix-Deceuninck) at the head of the GC, whilst Cedrine Kerbaol (CERATIZIT-WNT Pro Cycling) sits in third place at 37”. 2023 Tour winner Vollering goes into the last stage in 8th position overall, 1’15” behind the GC leader Niewiadoma.

Starting in Champagnole
There were 128 riders at the start of the stage, with Sofia Bertizzolo (UAE Team ADQ), Lily Williams (Human Powered Health) and Fauve Bastiaenssen (Lotto Dstny Ladies) withdrawn beforehand. This was the longest stage of the race and proved to be a fearsome test for the riders over the mountainous 166.4 km route from Champagnole to the spectacular finish at Le Grand-Bornand. Before the race reached Col de la Croix de la Serra (Km 57.8, Cat. 1, 12km at 5.1%) there were several unsuccessful attacks and the bunch stayed together. Then came the news that Charlotte Kool (dsm-firmenich PostNL) – who had worn the Yellow and green jerseys earlier in the Tour – had abandoned the race. At the top of the Croix de la Serra climb Puck Pieterse (Fenix-Deceuninck) led the way, ahead of Justine Ghekiere (AG Insurance – Soudal Team), but Pieterse did not join her polka dot rival Ghekiere in the breakaway which would soon form.

The breakaway goes
After the Croix de la Serra descent Marianne Vos (Team Visma | Lease a Bike) and Ghekiere pulled away with four other riders: Ghekiere’s teammate Julie Van de Velde, as well as Sara Martin (Movistar Team), Sarah Roy (Cofidis Women Team) and Ruth Edwards (Human Powered Health). Having taken the lead at the top of the second climb of the day – the Côte de Bois d’Arlod (Km 88, Cat. 4, 2.4km at 4.6%) – Ghekiere gained a 3-point provisional lead in the mountain classification over Pieterse. Descending after that climb, the breakaway pulled 2’15” clear of the peloton as the race headed to the intermediate sprint at Frangy (km 100.6).

Vos and Ghekiere power on
Vos was first at the intermediate sprint ahead of Van de Velde and Ghekiere, to provisionally secure the green jersey at this year’s Tour, repeating her success in the competition in 2022. Shortly after the sprint, on the Côte de Cercier climb (Km 111, Cat. 3, 4km at 4.9%) Ghekiere led the way again, in front of Van de Velde and Edwards, with the peloton reaching the summit 5’22” adrift. On the way to the Col de Saint-Jean-de-Sixt (Km 156, Cat. 2, 5.4km at 5.1%) time trial world champion Chloe Dygert (Canyon//SRAM Racing) reduced the gap to the race leaders at the head of the peloton, with the breakaway’s lead coming down to 4’25“ at 25 km from the finish.

Final two climbs
Early on the penultimate climb of the stage – Col de Saint-Jean-de-Sixt – the bunch had closed to within 3’00” of the escapees, as the GC favourites and their teams chased Vos and her companions down. The breakaway group fell apart on that climb with Ghekiere pulling away to secure five more QOM points, whilst Vos and Martin would reach the top just over a minute later and the bunch arrived at 2’22”. Meanwhile Kristen Faulkner (EF-Oatly-Cannondale) was distanced from the peloton on the same climb. So it was on towards the Montée du Chinaillon (Km 166.4, Cat. 2, 7km at 5.1%) for an exciting finale as the fans awaited at the finish at Le Grand-Bornand. Ghekiere pressed on alone on the final climb with several attacks and attempted attacks from the GC group behind her, though ultimately no-one could stop the flying 28 year-old Belgian from taking a well deserved victory.

It’s Vas in Amneville

It was a bittersweet victory for Blanka Vas (Team SD Worx – Protime) on Stage 5 of the 2024 Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift in Amneville, as the Hungarian outsprinted Katarzyna Niewiadoma (Canyon//SRAM Racing) and Liane Lippert (Movistar Team) to the line, with Kristen Faulkner (EF-Oatly-Cannondale) close by in fourth. A crash involving Vas’ teammate Demi Vollering and several other riders decimated the peloton with 6 km to go, with Vollering remounting but losing crucial time and control of the Yellow Jersey. Niewiadoma now leads the GC by 19” from Faulkner, with QOM leader Puck Pieterse (Fenix-Deceuninck) third at 22”. Vollering is now 9th overall, 1’19” off Niewiadoma, having lost 1’47″ after her crash.

Starting from Bastogne
The cycling hotspot of Bastogne was the setting for the start of Stage 5 as 137 riders commenced the day’s action, which would see the peloton cover 152.5km, taking on five categorised climbs on the route to Amneville. Elena Pirrone (Roland) first and then counter-attacker Michaela Drummond (Arkea-B&B Hotels) were the early movers, arriving together at the summit of the first categorised climb of the day (Côte de Hotte – Km 14.1, Cat. 3, 1.2km at 7.9%) approximately 20” ahead of the bunch, which was led over the top by Silvia Persico (UAE Team ADQ). Pirrone and Drummond were caught by the peloton shortly after they descended the Côte de Hotte.

Attacks before the Côte de Saint-Pancré
There were several short-lived breakaway attempts as the riders made their way to the second categorised climb of the day, but the peloton tightly controlled the potential escapees. That was the case until the Finn Wilma Aintila (Lotto Dstny Ladies) attacked after an hour of racing and she was soon joined by Amandine Fouquenet (Arkéa-B&B Hotels) at the front. After her earlier assault Pirrone went on the move again and joined Aintila and Fouquenet to form an attacking trio in the breakaway, creating a 35″ gap by km 65. Just after the race entered France (km 64.5) a group of 15 counter attackers tried to reach the front three, with the peloton responding. As the riders got to the start of the Côte de Saint-Pancré climb (Km 69.6, Cat. 4, 1.5km at 3.9%) the three breakaway riders were caught.

Pieterse shines
Puck Pieterse (Fenix-Deceuninck) reinforced her position in the QOM ranking in her polka dot jersey by taking the lead at the top of the Côte de Saint-Pancré climb (Km 69.6, Cat. 4, 1.5km at 3.9%) for two more points, just ahead of Justine Ghekiere (1 point). FDJ-Suez then stepped up the attacks and ended up finding an opening with Loes Adegeest, 3rd in the Rotterdam time trial. She was 15″ ahead of the bunch at the top of the Côte de Fermont (Km 79, Cat. 4, 1.5km at 4.6%), with the main group led by Persico at the summit. A second group in which Charlotte Kool (dsm-firmenich PostNL) was riding reached the Fermont summit just over a minute behind the GC leaders. Julie Van de Velde (AG Insurance-Soudal Team) and double cyclo-cross World Champion Fem van Empel (Visma | Lease a Bike) joined forces with Adegeest 67.5 km from the finish and soon built up a lead of over a minute, whilst Kool and her group re-joined the peloton.

Intermediate sprint
Before the intermediate sprint at Mercy-Le-Haut (km 105.8), though, Kool was in trouble again, dropping to more than two minutes behind the bunch. Lorena Wiebes (SD Worx-Protime) won the bunch sprint for 13 important points, crossing the intermediate line in fifth place, behind the breakaway three and counter-attacker Maëva Squiban (Arkea – B&B Hotels Women), with Squiban soon caught again by the GC group. It had been Van de Velde who won the intermediate sprint, ahead of Adegeest and Van Empel and with 30km to go a 2’17” advantage gave the three riders at the front the hope that they could make it to the finish to contest the victory between them.

Montois-la-Montagne climb
However, by the time Van de Velde, Van Empel and Adegeest approached the Montois-la-Montagne climb (Cat. 4, 1.7km at 6%) their lead over the peloton was down to just 48″, with Movistar Team increasing the pace of the peloton. That gap was just 24” at the summit, which Van Empel reached first. The big accident involving Vollering with 6 km to go shook up the GC, whilst Adegeest was the last of the breakaway riders to be caught – as 9 riders who had moved ahead of the split peloton after the crash reached her with 2.3km to go. On the final straight Vas was too strong for Niewiadoma, Lippert and Faulkner to take the win on a difficult day for her team.

• A renowned, versatile cyclist who stood on the podium of the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift in 2023, Katarzyna ‘Kasia’ Niewiadoma will be one of the main stars of La Vuelta Femenina 24 by Carrefour.es.
• The Canyon//SRAM rider ended a 5-year spell without victories last Wednesday at La Flèche Wallonne Femmes, where she defeated top riders like Demi Vollering and Elisa Longo Borghini in the final climb to the Mur de Huy.
It might look as if women’s cycling was a Dutch affair, given how the best riders in history do seemingly all hail from the Netherlands. Leontien van Moorsel and her three Olympic golds, Annemiek van Vleuten and her three Grand Tours in one season, Anna van der Breggen and her long domination of the Ardennes classics, Marianne Vos and her evergreen prowess on every terrain – and, in the current days, Demi Vollering and Lorena Wiebes, firmly established as the world’s best riders when it comes to climbing (in the case of the former) and sprinting (for the latter).

Yet look further away in the last 15 years and you will find a number of cyclists who, coming from all over the world, have made a significant impact on defining what women’s cycling is nowadays by playing a role on its evolution with her performances, her example and her words. Veterans like South Africa’s Ashleigh Moolman, Italy’s Elisa Longo Borghini, or our protagonist Katarzyna Niewiadoma (1994, Limanowa). As kind off the bike as fierce with a bib pinned on her back, the Polish rider has been present in the vanguard of women’s cycling for a decade, ever since she won the Euskal Emakumeen Bira at age 20. She is a consistent rider, solid in every terrain, able to perform in both Classics and stage races, both on the cobbles and on the hills, both on short, sharp climbs and on long, dragging ones. Her talents go further than road cycling, actually, as she is the current UCI Gravel World Champion.

A sporting and spiritual leader for the Canyon//SRAM team, ‘Kasia’ has had to endure a surprisingly long victory drought. Since the fourth stage of the 2019 The Women’s Tour until the 2024 La Flèche Wallonne Femmes, she spent 1770 days without celebrating an individual win – a poignant stat given that she took no less than 53 top5 placings in the meantime, including 3rd place overall in the 2023 Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift. No wonder she was so emotional after raising her arms in victory atop the Mur de Huy, defeating Vollering and Longo Borghini. “I really hope that, with this victory, I have inspired a lot of people who are pursuing their dreams,” she asserted. “I’ve failed a lot of times, with many near-misses, and never stopped believing. Reward is always there, waiting for us.” After closing her Classics campaign with a 5th place in Liège-Bastogne-Liège Femmes, she is off to participate in La Vuelta Femenina 24 by Carrefour.es after finishing 10th on its first edition.

– Why is it important for you to be an inspiration for other people?
Because I get a lot of inspiration from other people myself, in many parts of my life, and I personally feel a huge impact from other people’s words or performances in my life. That’s why I hope to be inspiring for others. It’s much greater to achieve something and then spread joy and happiness than just keeping it for yourself. I like that it works both ways – that I give and receive inspiration. That’s a nice way to live life – just exchange with others, both in the good and in the bad moments of your life.

– If you could pinpoint three figures that have been inspirational for you, who would those be?
It’s difficult to say. So many people deserve to be mentioned… First, my best friend Marianne. Second, Elisa Longo Borghini, who overcame so many obstacles last year and came so strong into this season after having such a bad year on which everything was seemingly going against her. I think it is pretty nice to have a competitor like her. Our riding styles resonate in so many ways. For many years we have been fighting each other in a positive way, being happy for each other after the finish line, and I hope it can continue like this. And, last but not least, every single female on my team, Canyon//SRAM, is a source of inspiration for me.

– In the press conference following La Flèche Wallonne Femmes, you said you “believed in personal development”. At which point did you decide to chase it?
I think personal development usually thrives after rough periods in life, when you realize something has to change. We all go through crises, or down moments. Age also helps – as you mature, you realize what are your priorities and what are the things that you unnecessarily worry about. In my case, Covid made me realize how much I love this sport. It happened around the time of my last victory and, from then on, winning got harder and harder. It built so much hunger in me, and made me think about what I could do to become the best rider in the world, looking for perfection as every person passionate about his or her job would do.

– What is your relationship with Spain like?
I love Spain. I have many good memories related to Spain. When I started to focus on my professional cycling career, I moved to Girona. I first lived with a roommate and then I met my partner, with whom I kept living there on and off. Two years ago, we moved to Andorra because Girona was a bit too packed with cyclists and we felt we needed a bit more space outside the cycling world.

Few victories are as exciting and as meaningful as the one Katarzyna Niewiadoma (Canyon//SRAM Racing) scored today in the 27th edition of La Flèche Wallonne Femmes. The Polish rider defeated 2023 winner Demi Vollering (Team SD Worx-ProTime) and Italian national champion Elisa Longo Borghini (Lidl-Trek) in the final climb to the Mur de Huy to finally net her first win after a 1770-day drought. It has taken her 53rd top5 placings, including a 2nd position on the 2021 edition of this very race, to finally raise her arms in victory again. ‘Kasia’ exploded in tears after the finish line, leaving an emotional lesson: she who perseveres, succeeds.

139 riders started the 27th edition of La Flèche Wallonne Femmes at 14:02 from Huy’s Grand-Place, taking on a 146-kilometre course to finish atop the iconic Mur de Huy. A rain shower turned into a snow fall as temperatures froze down to 5ºC, creating some hard weather conditions that would prove impactful in the unfolding of the race. Arkéa-Samsic’s Maaike Coljé was the first to abandon following a crash in the neutral zone. No breakaway went clear as the Côte de Gives (km 7,1 – 2,1 km at 5,5%) and Côte de Courrière (km 37,6 – 1,4 km at 7,1%) were ridden and left behind, creating some damage as pre-race favorites like Mavi García (Liv-AlUla-Jayco) struggled to keep up with the peloton’s pace.

A three-woman breakaway set the tone
Sara Martín (Movistar Team), Julie Van de Velde (AG Insurance-Soudal Team) and Elena Hartmann (Roland) attacked and went clear at kilometer 40, clocking a 1’40” advantage on the pack atop the Côte d’Evrehailles (km 53,4). The weather got better, from rainy and cold to just cloudy, as 89 kilometres into the race their gap topped at 4’25”, with Visma | Lease a Bike at the helm in the bunch. It was in the Côte d’Ereffe (km 101,4 – 2,1 km at 5%) that the peloton woke up. FDJ-SUEZ’s Grace Brown and Fenix-Deceuninck’s Pauline Rooijakkers took off and crested the climb 3’35” behind the front trio, with the peloton 10 seconds further back.

Everything up for grabs at the Mur de Huy
The first climb to the Mur de Huy (km 114,3 – 1,3 km at 9,6%) proved too demanding for Hartmann, who left Van de Velde and Martín alone at the head of the race. Across the summit, they had 2’09” on Brown and Rooijakkers and 2’32” on a 50-strong peloton led by SD Worx-ProTime. The chasing duo was reeled in with 17 kilometres to go by a peloton that was just 1’20” behind the head of the race at that point following a coordinated effort by Canyon//SRAM and the aforementioned SD Worx-ProTime. Several attacks happened up the Côte d’Ereffe (km 133,1 – 2,1 km at 5%) as the front duo was swept up and a 50-strong group was left at the head of the race. Riejanne Markus (Visma | Lease a Bike) put on a solo attack with 5 kilometres to go that stuck until the foot of the Mur de Huy. She was caught with 700 meters to go by Demi Vollering (SD Worx-ProTime), who marshalled the main group until Niewiadoma’s final, winning acceleration 200 meters from the finish.

Anna van der Breggen wins Strade Bianche Women Elite

The Dutch cyclist wins first UCI Women’s WorldTour race of the season

Siena, 3 March 2018 – The Dutch rider Anna van der Breggen (Boels Dolmans Cycling Team) has taken a solo victory in the fourth edition of Strade Bianche Women Elite NamedSport; the race, the first in this year’s UCI Women’s WorldTour, covered 136km from Siena (Fortezza Medicea) to Siena (Piazza del Campo). Van der Breggen crossed the finish line of the historic square alone, 49” ahead of Katarzyna Niewiadoma (Canyon // SRAM Cycling) and 59” ahead of Elisa Longo Borghini (Wiggle High5).

Speaking seconds after the finish, a victorious Anna van der Breggen said: “I have no idea why I decided to attack from so far out but I just felt good at that moment – the steep sections were perfect for making a difference. To win the race today comes from circumstances: it was a quite epic race, maybe the hardest race I’ve ever done. At the finish I was feeling strange and empty; it means a lot to me to win the Strade Bianche.”

THE GIRO ROSA GOES TO ANNA VAN DER BREGGEN

The Olympic and European Champion 2016 from Holland, is the overall winner of the 2017 edition. making the „double“ since her 2015 triumph in San Domenico di Varzo (Verbania).

Elisa Longo Borghini and Annemiek Van Vleuten (winner of the Green and Cyclamine Jersey), tried an attack on the climb of Vesuvio but it has been useless. The three athletes have been reached by the chasing group on the following descend to Torre del Greco, and Megan Guarnier (1st), Amanda Spratt (2nd) and Katarzyna Niewiadoma (3rd) took the final stage podium.

Born in Zwolle in 1990, Anna Van der Breggen is one of the biggest protagonists of the 2017 season. With the Olympic and European title 2016, she could take an historical triumph in Amstel Gold Race, Fleche Wallonne and Liege – Bastogne – Liege in April. With the Giro Rosa win, she is the new leader of the Women’s World Tour.

Elisa Longo Borghini won the Blue Jersey as best Italian (2nd overall), the Danish Cecilie Uttrup Ludwig is the best young (White Jersey) and Annemiek Van Vleuten (3rd place in the GC and stage winner in Montereale Valcellina and Sant’Elpidio a Mare) won the Green and Cyclamine Jersey.

The „Oranje“ cycling celebrates in the Province of Pordenone: Annemiek Van Vleuten is the winner of the Stage 2 (Zoppola – Montereale Valcellina, 122 km) after a breakaway in the final kilometers with her compatriot Anna Van der Breggen (Boels Dolmans, second) and Elisa Longo Borghini (Wiggle High5, third). The Olympic and European Champion is also the new Pink Jersey for the bonification. Anna is back to wear the Maglia Rosa since she triumphed in the final stage in year 2015 in San Domenico di Varzo.

THE 24 TEAMS OF THE 18TH GIRO ROSA HAVE BEEN PRESENTED

Piazza Capitolo in Aquileia has been the place of the official team presentation of the Giro Rosa 2017. Each line-up, starting from Giusfredi – Bianchi until the Boels Dolmans of the last year winner Megan Guarnier came up on the stage. The crowd showed its enthusiasm especially for the three local cyclists Beatrice Bartelloni, Annalisa Cucinotta and the three times Italian National Champion Elena Cecchini, but every athlete received a lot of applauses

Enzo Cainero, President of the Stage Committee, welcomed everyone together with the Majors of Aquileia and Grado in the beautiful Friuli, and the local choirs made their singing performance which anticipated the big presentation of the Giro Rosa teams.

Every time will race with seven riders each and the Giro will begin tomorrow at 4:45 PM with the spectacular Team Time Trial which will assign the Maglia Rosa. The Giusfredi – Bianchi will be the first leaving from Aquileia and the Boels Dolmans closes. its line up includes Megan Guarnier, the World Champion Amalie Dideriksen and the Olmpic Champion of Rio 2016 Anna Van der Breggen. The two leaders of the Women’s World Tour Katarzyna Niewiadoma (GC – WM3 Team) and Cecilie Uttrup Ludwig (Young – Cervelo Bigla Pro Cycling Team).

The final greeting was made by the President of the Italian Cycling Federation Renato Di Roccowith the Giro Director Giuseppe Rivolta, ready for another edition with new emotions to live.

Siena, 4 March 2017 – Today Michał Kwiatkowski made it two as by winning the Strade Bianche NamedSport for the second time adding to his first victory in 2014, the year he became the first Pole to win the Elite world championship for road racing. He rode away solo with 15km to go from a group of top contenders including Ždenek Štybar and Greg Van Avermaet. The reigning World Champion, Peter Sagan, was forced to pull out due to illness after 114km of the race.

Abu Dhabi, 18. Oktober 2016 – Die zweite UCI Cycling Gala, die heute abend in Abu Dhabi stattfand, feierte die diesjährigen größten Erfolge im professionellen Radfahren.

Die neu gekrönte Elite Amalie Dideriksen und Peter Sagan zählten zu den 24 Weltmeistertiteln, der Mannschaften und Nationen aus der UCI WorldTour, der UCI Women’s WorldTour, den Olympischen Spielen, Paralympischen Spielen und der UCI Road Weltmeisterschaft.

Für ihre zweite Auflage kehrte die UCI Cycling Gala in die Hauptstadt der Vereinigten Arabischen Emirate zurück und wurde erneut vom Abu Dhabi Sports Council und der United Arab Emirates Cycling Federation in Zusammenarbeit mit RCS Sport veranstaltet. Es dauerte zwei Tage vor dem vier-etappen Radrennen der Emirate der Abu Dhabi Tour (20.-23. Oktober).

ABU DHABI TOUR TEAM VORSTELLUNG
Neben der Veranstaltung wurden die Teams, die an der Abu Dhabi Tour teilnahmen, beginnend am Donnerstag 20 und Ende am Sonntag, 23. Oktober auf der Bühne vorgestellt.

Neben den Titelpreisen an die diesjährigen UCI World Champions und WorldTour-Sieger, war es einer der Olympiaden, die heute Abend einen weiteren Sonderpreis bei der UCI Cycling Gala erhielten: Elia Viviani. „Der Gewinnende Geist“ ist ein einzigartiger Abu Dhabi Sports Council Preis für den Fahrer, der Hartnäckigkeit, Stärke und unbeugsamen Geist in der Erreichung des Sieges in diesem Jahr zeigte. Der Italiener, der das Omnium-Podium bei den Olympischen Spielen in London 2012 nach so langer Zeit verpasst hatte, wartete vier Jahre auf seine sportliche Rache und gewann in der letzten Omnium-Saison sogar mit einem Sturz, und schließlich gewann er die olympische Goldmedaille in Rio dieses Jahr.

Seine Exzellenz Aref Al Awani, Generalsekretär des Abu Dhabi Sports Council, sagte: „Es wurde uns nahegelegt die UCI Cycling Gala erneut zu beherzigen und einige unglaubliche Leistungen von männlichen und weiblichen Radfahrern zu würdigen – es war eine fantastische Feier der diesjährigen Radfahr Saisont. Mit drei großen Radsportveranstaltungen in der gleichen Woche im Mittleren Osten, freuen wir uns sehr darauf, dass Abu Dhabi im globalen Radsport der sportliche Scheinwerfer ist. “

UCI-Präsident Brian Cookson sagte: „Es war eine hervorragende Straßen Saison für Männer und Frauen, nicht zuletzt auf der Rückseite der Olympischen Spiele, Paralympische Spiele und der Eröffnungs-UCI WorldTour für Frauen. Die UCI Cycling Gala gibt uns die Gelegenheit, einige der phänomenalen Leistungen aus einer unvergesslichen Saison zu feiern. Das Timing dieser Feier könnte nicht besser sein, nur wenige Tage nach der UCI Road Weltmeisterschaft in Doha, Katar, eine erste im Nahen Osten und am Vorabend die Abu Dhabi Tour. “
