Danish champion Mattias Skjelmose (Lidl-Trek), helped all day by his team-mate Mads Pedersen, stole the show between Sisteron and La Colle-sur-Loup on Friday to win the 6th stage of Paris-Nice in a three-man breakaway. Gone with him in the short but gruelling last climb, Americans Brandon McNulty and Matteo Jorgenson finished second and third and the UAE Team Emirates rider took back the yellow jersey he handed for two days to Australian Luke Plapp. Jorgenson, who launched the decisive move in the finale, will sport the white jersey in Saturday’s modified mountain stage.

Lucas Plapp (Jayco AlUla) and Santiago Buitrago (Bahrain-Victorious) boldly outwitted the favourites to share the laurels at the top of Mont Brouilly on Wednesday, the Colombian winning the 4th stage of Paris-Nice while the Australian champion, second in the stage, took over the overall leader’s yellow and white jersey.Plapp was the first to launch the decisive move in the 1st category Col du Fut d’Avenas and he was later joined by Buitrago, already noted for his two stage wins in the Giro d’Italia. The pair worked perfectly together while the favourites were playing a waiting game behind them. Mattias Skjelmose (Lidl-Trek), Remco Evenepoel (Soudal-Quick-Step) and Egan Bernal (Ineos Grenadiers) surged too late to becontent with collecting a few bonus seconds on the finish line.France’s Mathieu Burgaudeau was part of the four-man break which allowed him to strengthen his polka-dot jersey on the several climbs of the day.

Perfectly led-out by veteran Matteo Trentin, Arvid de Kleijn (Tudor Pro Cycling Team) upset the favourites to win the 179-km second stage of Paris-Nice in Montargis on Monday. The 2023 Milan-Turin winner surged in the final stretch to narrowly beat New Zealand’s Laurence Pithie, who took the race leader’s yellow and white jersey away from Dutchman Olav Kooij, never in contention in the finale. Another Dutchman, Dylan Groenewegen (Team Jayco AlUla) was third. France’s Mathieu Burgaudeau took advantage of the two climbs of the day to take the polka-dot jersey away from Germany’s Jonas Rutsch (EF-Easypost).

Les Mureaux, Sunday, March 3rd – First Stage. Already a stage winner last year on Paris-Nice, Olav Kooij (Visma | Lease a Bike) made it two on Sunday when he surged on the line to outsprint pre-race favourite Mads Pedersen (Lidl-Trek) in Les Mureaux. The Dutchman, one of few sprinters able to stay in the front despite the bumpy terrain, made the most of the day to seize the yellow jersey ahead of a sprint stage to Montargis on Monday. In-form New Zealander Laurence Pithie was third in the 157.7-km ride which saw the GC contenders battle it out in the finale, Remco Evenepoel showing a lot of ambition in the last two hills of the day. Other stage’s laurels went to Germany’s Jonas Rutsch (EF-Easypost) who took the KOM lead thanks to the points collected on the day’s three-man break.

82nd edition of Paris-Nice 2024

Key points:
 The 82nd edition of Paris-Nice takes on an unprecedented dimension as it kicks off the racing season, with one of the highlights playing out once again just a stone’s throw from the Promenade des Anglais, with the final finish of the Tour de France. 2022 Paris-Nice winner, Primož Roglič aims to join the club of winners of the three major cycling tours this year and kicks off his campaign on the ‚Race to the Sun‘, with Remco Evenepoel his main rival. The Belgian champion will compete in his first French stage race from 3 to 10 March.

 Several contenders are in a position to join the expected duel, including David Gaudu, Carlos Rodríguez, João Almeida, Mattias Skjelmose and Matteo Jorgenson. They will all have to be on peak form for the decisive stages of the Auxerre time trial, the centre-piece stage to the Auron resort and the final stage, which is invariably indomitable, in the Nice region.
 Numerous sprinters have spotted the opportunities to be seized on the Race to the Sun, with a variety of profiles giving a chance to the likes of Mads Pedersen, Arnaud De Lie, Bryan Coquard, Dylan Groenewegen, Fabio Jakobsen, Arnaud Démare, Olav Kooij and Sam Bennett.

Primoz Roglic has already had an eventful Paris-Nice career despite only having participated twice in this leading European event. On his debut in 2021, he masterfully took command, winning three stages and rode in the leader’s jersey on the race’s final day, when he lost all his advantage in the last 25 kilometres following a crash. But the Slovenian is an honourable loser. He returned the following year and was almost as imperious to get his revenge, with the precious help of Wout van Aert as his ideal deputy. This year, the three-time Vuelta winner has chosen Paris-Nice to debut his BORA-hansgrohe jersey and kick off his conquest of the Tour de France. The reunion with the Race to the Sun will also be a reunion with one of his closest rivals on the roads of Spain since Remco Evenepoel triumphed there in 2022, mostly battling with him. The Belgian champion has set himself the same challenge as his closest rival with a view to July 2024 and, more specifically, the finish line in Nice for the Tour’s final finish. The Soudal-Quick Step leader got a head start by scheduling his first competition in Portugal, where he won the Tour of the Algarve for the third time, with a show of strength in the Albufeira time trial that certainly didn’t go unnoticed. And it may well be in Auxerre, in the time trial format that was tried out in 2023 (contested by team, timed individually), that the Olympic champion and the world champion in the speciality will pit their forces in a duel that could continue just until Nice, with surprises to be expected on Mont Brouilly (stage 4) or on the way up to the Auron resort (stage 7).

The match in question could see many other contenders, starting with David Gaudu, who was as convincing as ever during his 2023 Paris-Nice, finishing in 2nd place between Tadej Pogačar and Jonas Vingegaard. This year, the UAE team’s best chances are Joāo Almeida and Brandon McNulty, while Visma | Lease a Bike will count on its off-season recruit Matteo Jorgenson. For Ineos Grenadiers, Carlos Rodríguez, 5th in the 2023 Tour de France, has been given the task of taking over from Egan Bernal (winner of the 2019 Paris-Nice) at the age of 23, with Joshua Tarling, the peloton’s most promising rouleur, providing valuable support in the time trial. Twenty-three-year-old Danish champion Mattias Skjelmose has already proven himself at the WorldTour level by winning last year’s Tour of Switzerland (ahead of Ayuso and Evenepoel!) and will arrive in the Les Yvelines with lofty ambitions. It is the same story for Austrian Felix Gall with Decathlon-Ag2r, Ion Izagirre (3rd in 2021) with Cofidis or Pello Bilbao with Bahrain Victorious.

The stage chasers may not have the same objectives on the horizon for the finish in Nice. But they also have some proper prospects, with sprints of various types conceivable in Les Mureaux (stage 1), Montargis (stage 2), Sisteron (stage 5), and why not in La Colle-sur-Loup (stage 6). Mads Pedersen, winner of the Etoile de Bessèges and the Tour de la Provence, could add to his small collection of trophies won on French roads, especially Paris-Nice, given his impressive start to the season. Arnaud De Lie has equivalent qualities, as do Michael Matthews and Bryan Coquard. But world-class sprinters Dylan Groenewegen, Olav Kooij, Fabio Jakobsen, Arnaud Démare, Sam Bennett and Kaden Groves will also be riders to watch out for.

PARIS-NICE 2024

Key points:

 For the 15th year running, Paris-Nice will start in the Yvelines department. Les Mureaux takes over from La Verrière, where the race set off from last year.
 A team time trial (26.9 km in Auxerre) will again be on offer, using the format tried out last March: the time recorded by the first rider from each team.
 The Paris-Nice map sees Mont Brouilly and La Colle-sur-Loup back on the programme, both cancelled in 2016 and 2023 due to inclement weather.
 Paris-Nice offers a preview of the next Tour de France during the final weekend around Nice, with an unprecedented finish in Auron.

As with the composition of a fine wine, the preparation of a race requires a subtle blend. As the recent Paris-Nice vintages have been of excellent quality, the organisers have stayed true to their favourite ingredients, adding a touch of novelty to give the vintage its own flavour. „Over time, we’ve found a balanced formula that offers something for everyone while reconciling the interests of the race with the safety of the riders”, sums up François Lemarchand. The route of the 82nd edition respects the fundamentals: a loop in the Yvelines, a stage of „bordures“, a time trial, a medium mountain climb, a finish for sprinters, a chance for daredevils and a thrilling weekend around Nice. Each day of the race has its own unique character.

So, for the 15th start of the event in the Yvelines, around Les Mureaux, the spirit of recent editions has been preserved, with a 100 km loop, a shorter second half and a false flat finish. There are two short hills to pass twice, the last 12 km from the finish. The second stage, between Thoiry and Montargis, is likely to be prone to breaks if the wind picks up, even more so as the course changes direction. But the straight finish is also ideal for sprinters. The new-style team time trial introduced last year that won everyone over will return around Auxerre, with a shorter distance (26.9 km) and, more importantly, a more undulating terrain, particularly in the final stretch, which should provide further opportunities for tactical jousting, with time once again taken on the first rider.

The race returns to the Beaujolais region the following day. Tribute will be paid to Mont Brouilly, which could not host the race in 2016 due to snow. It will be climbed twice in this difficult stage, with 3,300 metres of ascent. The Col du Fut d’Avenas, some 20 kilometres from the finish, also should inspire the more ambitious riders. The second good chance for the sprinters comes on the following day on the stage to Sisteron, the gateway to Provence and a traditional venue for Paris-Nice, where the final loop will be shorter for a long, wide finish ideally suited for sprinters.

The Colle-sur-Loup, deprived of its stage in 2023 due to violent and unpredictable winds, will provide a remarkable battleground for the attackers on Friday with 70 km of flat terrain after the start in Sisteron. Then comes a succession of hills to allow the daring to try their luck, particularly the final kilometres of the stage that feature steep climbs.

During the final weekend, the showpiece stage on Saturday will provide riders with a preview of the Tour de France. As in July, the riders will climb the Colmiane and head for Isola 2000 but then turn off towards Auron, where the ski resort will offer a steady climb of just over 7 km, peaking at 9%. It is an unprecedented climb that promises to be decisive. Sunday’s stage follows in part the route of the final time trial of the 2024 Tour, notably with a short ascent to the Col d’Èze, punctuated by a compelling novelty: the descent to Nice after crossing the Chemin du Vinaigrier is much shorter, with the end of the climb only 9 km from the finish line on the Promenade des Anglais. Any time lost at the top will be hard to make up.
