Ben Zwiehoff fährt in die Top-10 bei erster Bergankunft der UAE Tour

Mit 185 km war die heutige Strecke die längste Etappe und war für den Sieg in der Gesamtwertung sehr wichtig, da das Peloton den Jebel Jais bewältigen musste, einen 21,1 km langen und durchschnittlichen 5,4 Prozent steilen Anstieg, der zum Finale hin bis zu 9 Prozent erreichte. Im finalen Anstieg zog das Hauptfeld das Tempo an, aber Emanuel Buchmann und Ben Zwiehoff gelang es sich in die vorderen Reihen des reduzieren Feldes zu kämpfen. Nachdem der letzte Ausreißer gestellt war, explodierte das Rennen am steileren Teil des Schlussanstiegs. Auf den letzten 10 km gab es immer wieder Attacken aus der Favoritengruppe bis sich letztlich E. Rubio solo absetzen und den Tagessieg einfahren konnte. Ben erreichte das Ziel in der Verfolgergruppe auf dem 10. Platz während Emanuel die Ziellinie knapp außerhalb der Top-10 überquerte.

Reaktionen im Ziel
„Wir wussten, dass es heute darauf ankommt, möglichst sparsam diesen Berg hoch zu fahren. Zunächst mal haben uns die Jungs rund um Sam, Danny, Ryan, Patrick und Shane super beschützt. Als es zwischendurch ein bisschen hektisch war, sind wir alle zusammengeblieben und sie haben uns da super gut durchmanövriert. Dann haben sie uns perfekt im Berg abgeliefert, dass wir nie zu viel Energie verschwenden mussten. Als dann die Attacken losgingen, wussten wir auch, dass wir cool bleiben mussten und dass das Rennen erst ganz am Ende entschieden wird. Ich habe noch versucht, ganz vorne mitzufahren, aber im letzten Sprint hat mir noch ein bisschen der Punch gefehlt. Aber ich bin sehr, sehr zufrieden. Der 10. Platz im Bergaufsprint ist nämlich ein cooles Geburtstagsgeschenk.“ – Ben Zwiehoff

„Wir sind sehr zufrieden, aber auch ein bisschen überrascht, mit dem 10. Platz von unserem heutigen Geburtstagskind Ben! Wir hatten zum Schluss immer noch zwei Fahrer vorne dabei gehabt, aber dieser Berg kam Emu und Ben nicht so wirklich entgegen. Er war vielleicht ein bisschen zu flach. Unsere Sprinter konnten sich ein bisschen für morgen schonen und wir freuen uns auf die vierte Etappe, die definitiv im Massensprint enden wird. Cian Uijtdebroeks verteidigt Top Ten Platz am letzten Tag der Tour of Oman

Mit einer Bergankunft auf dem Green Mountain wurde heute die Tour of Oman entschieden. Zwar setzte sich erneut eine Spitzengruppe früh vom Feld ab, allerdings ohne jemals echte Chancen auf einen Sieg zu haben. Es kam zum erwarteten GC-Showdown und am Ende setzen sich die besten Bergfahrer dieser Woche erneut durch. M. Vansevenant holte sich den Tagessieg, während M. Jorgenson mit Rang zwei den Gesamtsieg absichern konnte. Cian Uijtdebroeks verteidigte mit Rang 10 auf der letzten Etappe, dicht gefolgt von Emanuel Buchmann auf Rang 11, seinen 9. Rang in der Gesamtwertung. BORA – hansgrohe konnte auch die Teamwertung der Tour of Oman 2023 für sich entscheiden.

Von der Ziellinie

“Am Ende muss man sagen, dass es keine komplizierte Etappe war. Das Rennen war immer Kontrolle und am Ende waren die besten Fahrer vorne. Der Green Mountain ist ein fairer Berg, da entscheiden einfach die Beine. Cian hatte heute leider nicht den besten Tag und konnte nicht ganz seine gewohnte Leistung abrufen. Da müssen wir erst analysieren, woran das gelegen hat. Rang neun in der Gesamtwertung ist nicht schlecht, aber wir hatten uns schon etwas mehr ausgerechnet. Erfreulich ist aber in jedem Fall, dass wir die Mannschaftswertung gewinnen konnten. Emu und Ben sind ebenfalls ein solides Rennen gefahren und das hat uns diesen Sieg abgesichert.” – Rolf Aldag, Sportlicher Leiter

Vansevenant – Jorgenson, wonderkids tame Green Mountain

The final stage of the Tour of Oman 2023, set for the first time up the ascent of Jabal Al Akhdhar (Green Mountain), saw two 23-year-old talents rise to victory in an explosive finale. Mauri Vansevenant (Soudal Quick-Step) was the strongest on the brutal slopes of a 5.7km ascent with an average gradient of 10.5% to take an emotional victory in front of his family, who came to Oman to support him. Matteo Jorgenson (Movistar) managed to hang on and save the leader’s red jersey for 1’’. A couple of days after his first professional victory, he becomes the first American overall winner of the Tour of Oman.

The final challenges of the Tour of Oman 2023 inspire seven attackers who get on the move as soon as they leave Samail: Lawrence Naesen (AG2R Citroën), Ceriel Desal (Bingoal WB), Angel Fuentes (Burgos-BH), the Oman National Champion Faisal Al Mamari (Oman National Team), Benjamin Perry (Human Powered Health), Irwandie Lakasek (Terengganu Polygon) and Manabu Ishibashi (JCL Team Ukyo).

Astana Qazaqstan pull the bunch
They open a gap of 4’10’’ after 14km but Astana Qazaqstan react at the front of the bunch to defend the options of Alexey Lutsenko, who dominated Jabal Al Akhdhar and the Tour of Oman on two occasions (2018, 2019). The Asian team control the gap around 2 minutes.
Al Mamari goes first through the intermediate sprint of Wadi Squt (62.7km to go). Some 20km further, Lakasek and then Al Mamari are dropped by their breakaway companions.
The gap increases again, up to 2’40’’, before the peloton up the ante inside the last 30km. But the attackers also increase their pace. They still hold an advantage of 1’20’’ at the bottom of the climb up Jabal Al Akhdhar (Green Mountain): 5.7km at 10.5% to decide the Tour of Oman 2023.

The final showdown
Intermarché-Circus-Wanty set the pace on the first part of the ascent. Naesen and Desal are the last riders to be caught, just inside the last 4km of ascent.
With 3km to go, only Matteo Jorgenson (Movistar), Mauri Vansevenant (Soudal Quick-Step) and Geoffrey Bouchard (AG2R Citroën) can keep up with Rein Taarämae (Intermarché-Circus-Wanty). But the Estonian climber is the next rider to drop.
It eventually comes down to a brutal uphill sprint. Vansevenant is the most explosive to take victory in front of his parents and his sister. But Jorgenson hangs on to win the overall standings by 1’’.

Tour of Oman – 4. Etappe

Alle zehn Fahrer, die gestern, kurz vor dem Ziel der 3. Etappe, durch die verschobenen Banden aufgehalten wurden, erhalten eine Zeitgutschrift in Höhe von 20 Sekunden. Dazu zählen auch die beiden Deutschen Emanuel Buchmann und Ben Zwiehoff vom Team Bora – hansgrohe.

Rund 200 Meter vor dem Ziel der Mini-Bergankunft am Jabal Haat war hinter den Top 15 am Montag plötzlich eine ganze Kette an Absperrgittern durch einen tieffliegenden Hubschrauber quer auf die Straße geblasen worden. Der Weg war dadurch komplett blockiert und 10 Fahrer mussten stoppen. Bis die Bande ein wenig zur Seite geschoben werden konnte vergingen ca. 13 Sekunden.

Der Hubschrauberpilot darf heute an der Tour of Oman nicht mehr teilnehmen.

Ide Schelling am Podest der vierten Etappe der Tour of Oman

Die mit 205 km längste Etappe der diesjährigen Tour of Oman wartet am vorletzten Tag mit zwei Anstiegen auf den letzten zehn Kilometern auf. Eine Ausreißergruppe konnte sich erst nach 90 km formieren, aber das Feld hielt sie immer gut unter Kontrolle und die Spitze wurde rechtzeitig wieder eingeholt. Im letzten Anstieg kam es zu Attacken aus einem reduzierten Feld und es gelang D. Ulissi sich etwas abzusetzen. Im Sprint zeigte sich Ide Schelling stark und rollte beim Sieg von Ulissi als Dritter über die Ziellinie.

Reaktionen im Ziel
„Es war ein schneller und hektischer Start heute, keiner wollte eine Ausreißergruppe wegkommen lassen, was uns eigentlich in die Karten spielte. Im welligen Finale waren wir mit den beiden Anstiegen gut vertraut und die Jungs waren dort die ganze Zeit gut positioniert. Ben hat Ide dann auch sehr gut um die Zielkurve gebracht und mit 250 m bis zum Ziel hat der Niederländer seinen Sprint eröffnet und letztendlich den dritten Platz eingefahren. Was das Gesamtklassement betrifft, haben wir auch unseren 9. Platz mit Cian verteidigt und wir führen weiterhin die Teamwertung mit einem Vorsprung von 41 Sekunden an. Also insofern war es ein guter Tag und die Jungs fühlten sich ziemlich gut.“ – Rolf Aldag, Sportlicher Leiter

Ulissi punches over Yitti Hills

After he came close to victory in Qurayyat and Al Hamra, Diego Ulissi rose his arms in triumph on Tuesday, in Yitti. Stage 4, the longest of the Tour of Oman 2023 (204.9km), had an explosive finale in store for the peloton with a couple of ascents in the last 10 km. Pascal Ackermann, Ulissi’s teammate in the ranks of UAE Team Emirates, went on the move on these up and down sections before he was caught with 2km to go… It was then time for the Italian puncheur to display his power and take victory ahead of Axel Zingle (Cofidis) and Ide Schelling (Bora-Hansgrohe), while Matteo Jorgenson (Movistar) retained the leader’s red jersey. After a week of racing in the Sultanate, a final challenge awaits the rider: the mighty climb up Jabal Al Akhdhar (Green Mountain), where the overall winner of the Tour of Oman will be crowned.

As usual in this Tour of Oman 2023, attackers get on the move immediately after the start, from Izki. But the 204.9km ahead of them inspire many riders, leading to a relentless battle for the break of the day.
Josef Cerny (Soudal Quick-Step) tries to make the most of his raw power to make a difference. Jeroen Meijers (Terengganu Polygon) is also determined to race at the front to defend his golden jersey as the leader of the most aggressive rider classification.

Two hours of battle for the break
But everyone get back together ahead of the first intermediate sprint (km 52.4). Fredrik Dversnes seizes the opportunity to take 3 points and the lead of the virtual standings against Meijers (13 pts vs 11).
It takes two hours of racing at 47.3km/h for a group of attackers to eventually make the break with Dversnes, back at the front after he was reeled in by the bunch, as well as the U23 World Champion Yevgeniy Fedorov (Astana Qazaqstan), Urko Berrade (Kern Pharma) and the winner of the African Games Youcef Reguigui (Terengganu Polygon).

Movistar, Arkéa-Samsic and Cofidis work together
After such a battle, they enter the last 100km with a lead of 3’40’’. Matteo Jorgenson’s Movistar drive the bunch to defend the red jersey and they quickly receive support from Arkéa-Samsic and Cofidis. They control the gap around 2 minutes. Reguigui dominates the second intermediate sprint (49.2km to go) ahead of Dversnes, who extends his lead in the most aggressive rider classification. Reguigui drops back to the bunch as his breakaway companions enter the last 20km with a lead of 1’10’’.

Ackermann attacks, Ulissi delivers
Dversnes, Fedorov and Berrade are caught at the bottom of the penultimate climb of the day, in Al Jissah (2.5km at 6.9%). Maxim Van Gils (Lotto Dstny) and Alexey Lutsenko (Astana Qazaqstan) set a brutal pace on the ascent and a small group emerges at the front. Pascal Ackermann (UAE Team Emirates) attacks on the downhill and manages to open a gap of 25’’. He’s caught inside the last 2km to go. Ivan Cobo (Kern Pharma) launches a counter-attack on the final ascent (1.6km at 6.6%). He’s caught right at the summit, inside the last kilometre. The battle for the stage win comes down to a sprint in a reduced bunch. And Diego Ulissi demonstrates once again his expertise in this area. Meanwhile, Matteo Jorgenson safely defends his red jersey on the eve of the final battle up Green Mountain.

Cian Uijtdebroeks zeigt starke Leistung bei Bergankunft auf 3. Etappe der Tour of Oman

Auf der dritten Teilstrecke waren heute Kletterfähigkeiten gefragt, denn die Etappe endete mit einem 4,5 km langen und durchschnittlich 7,5 Prozent Anstieg zum Jabal Haat. Eine kleine Ausreißergruppe konnte gleich nach dem Start entkommen, doch wenige Kilometer vor dem Ziel wurde diese vom Feld gestellt. Den Schlussanstieg nahmen dann Emu Buchmann, Cian Uijtdebroeks und Ben Zwiehoff in einer 35 Mann starken Gruppe in Angriff. Im steilsten Teil mussten die beiden deutschen BORA – hansgrohe Fahrer, auch wegen eines Zwischenfalls mit Absperrungen die der Helikopter auf die Fahrbahn blies, reißen lassen, während Cian die Angriffe aus einer kleinen Gruppe bis auf die letzten Meter folgen konnte. Beim Sieg von M. Jorgenson belegte der junge Belgier den 5. Platz, nur drei Sekunden hinter dem Sieger und ist damit derzeit Neunter in der Gesamtwertung.

„Heute war ein guter Tag für mich, auch was die Gesamtwertung betrifft. Es war ein schwieriges Finish, denn der Anstieg war ziemlich punchy. Die Jungs, besonders Emu, haben mir den ganzen Tag gut geholfen, damit ich meine Energie sparen konnte. Die Anfahrt zum letzten Anstieg war nicht leicht, aber wir haben den Fuß der Steigung in einer guter Position erreicht. „Das Rennen war ziemlich schnell, aber gut kontrolliert. Alles lief auf den letzten Berg hinaus. Der Anstieg begann sehr steil, wo das Feld schnell zerbröckelte. Wir hatten Emu und Cian als Kapitäne auserkoren und unser Team hat unseren Plan gut umgesetzt. Aber es scheint, dass Barrieren durch den Hubschrauber auf die Straße gefegt wurden, wodurch Emu und Ben etwas behindert waren. Cian war vorne in einer Gruppe von sechs Fahrern, eröffnete seinen Sprint aber etwas zu früh und belegte am Ende den 5. Platz. Jorgenson rises to a maiden victory

Young American talent Matteo Jorgenson (Movistar) flew to his professional victory on stage 3 of the Tour of Oman 2023. The 23-year-old climber made the most of the steepest sections leading to an unprecedented finish in Al Hamra (climb of Jabal Hatt, 4.6km at 8.5%) to get the best of another young rising talent, Belgium’s Mauri Vansevenant (Soudal Quick-Step), and France’s Geoffrey Bouchard (AG2R Citroën). Not only does Jorgenson take the stage win, he also claims the leader’s red jersey. On day 4, the penultimate stage ahead of the final showdown up Jabal Al Akhdhar (Green Mountain), the peloton face another explosive finish on the Yitti Hills.

The start from Al Khobar quickly sees five attackers jump ahead of the bunch: Johan Meens (Bingoal WB), Alejandro Franco (Burgos-BH), Said Al Rahbi (Oman National Team), Stephen Bassett (Human Powered Health) and Mohd Harrif Saleh (Terengganu Polygon).
They open a gap of 3’30’’ while Jesus Herrada’s Cofidis take the reins of the bunch to defend the leader’s red jersey.

Cofidis and UAE pull
Al Rahbi and Saleh struggle on an uphill section 45km into the stage. Saleh makes his way back to the front of the race but Al Rahbi drops back to the bunch.
Saleh goes first at the intermediate sprint (km 93.1) to defend his teammate Jeroen Meijers’ golden jersey as the leader of the most aggressive rider classification. He then drops back to the bunch.
Meens, Franco and Bassett enter the last 50km with a lead of 3’30’’. A dozen kilometres further into the race, UAE Team Emirates also send a man at the front of the bunch to participate in the chase.

Jorgenson pounces
The gap drops down to 1’40’’ into the last 20km and under a minute with 12km to go. The attackers are eventually caught just ahead of the final ascent: 4.6km at 8.5% with sections around 15% in the last 2km.
Already in the top 5 up Qurayyat, Matteo Jorgenson (Movistar) senses his opportunity to make a difference. Alexey Lutsenko (Astana Qazaqstan) also wants to make it a hard race. But nobody, not even the Kazakh all rounder (a 2-time winner of the Tour of Oman), can’t resist when Jorgenson sprints to victory in the final 200m.

Last stage for Consonni, Guerreiro wins the Saudi Tour

After visiting some of the most spectacular sites of AlUla including the UNESCO world heritage site of Hegra, the final stage of the Saudi Tour came down to a bunched sprint. Just above the mirrored Maraya concert hall, Simone Consonni (Cofidis) made the best of his punchy sprint to beat Matteo Malucelli (Bingoal WB) and Pascal Ackermann (UAE Team Emirates). The final general classification and this 2023 Saudi Tour was won by Portugal’s Ruben Guerreiro who finished safely in the bunch.

It was time for the final showdown. Before the start of the fifth and last stage of the Saudi Tour the first three of the general classification were within ten seconds, Ruben Guerreiro (MOV) leading the way with a slim 8” advantage over Formolo (UAE) and 9” over Buitrago (TBV). In other words anything could still happen especially with a gravel section through the UNESCO World heritage site of Hegra on the menu of the day’s 143-km race where a puncture could occur at any time. There would indeed be quite a possibility for some drama.

BATTLE FOR BREAKAWAY
For this final day of the event, the 102 remaining riders all gathered together at the start in the old town of AlUla. With still a lot at stake in all the different standings, the battle was intense to get into the day’s breakaway. Desal (BWB) was the first man to go clear of the pack at km 15. The Belgian was soon caught by five other men: blue jersey Hansen (UXT), Malecki (Q36), Juaristi (EUS), Iacchi and Van Empel (both COR). At the first intermediate active sprint (km 21) won by Hansen ahead of Juaristi and Malecki, the front six could enjoy a 2’25’’ advantage.

HANSEN CLOSES IN ON BLUE JERSEY
Eager to try and win a second stage on this Saudi Tour, team Jayco AlUla started chasing down the escapees. At the second Intermediate active sprint (km 71) Hansen moved a step closer to the final blue jersey by again beating Juaristi and Malecki. Meanwhile the pack remained 1’50’’ adrift. With UAE team Emirates and Movistar helping out at the front of the pack, the gap carried on dropping as the riders went through the gravel section of the spectacular Hegra site. As the pack excited the UNESCO world heritage site, Donovan (Q36) took off on a counter-attack. With 25kms to go, the front 6 had a 25’’ lead over the British rider and 55’’ over the pack. Just before the bonus sprint, Donovan stopped his vain solo effort. That all important sprint (km 122) was to be claimed by Juaristi ahead of Hansen, guaranteed of winning the blue jersey.

THIRD PRO WIN FOR CONSONNI
With 15kms to go, the gap has dropped down to 35’’. Seeing the pack move dangerously closer, Malecki gave it a final go on his own. He would be the last man standing of the breakaway but was caught with just under 2 kilometres to go. The pack remained bunched for the final uphill straight just by the Maraya concert hall. On this punchy type finish, Simone Consonni (COF) flew to victory, beating Malucelli (BWB) and Ackermann (UAE). The Italian Olympic and World team pursuit champion conquers his third professional win, his first of 2023.

FIRST STAGE RACE WIN FOR GUERREIRO
Finishing safely among the peloton in 16th position, Ruben Guerreiro (MOV) wins this third edition of the Saudi Tour ahead of Davide Formolo (UAE) and Santiago Buitrago (TBV). The Portuguese conquers his first ever stage win. Thanks to his fourth position on the final stage, Dylan Groenewegen (JAY) wins the points classification (red jersey) while Buitrago finishes best young rider (white jersey) and UAE is crowned best team.

Stage 4 of the Saudi Tour was promised to a climber or at least a man with GC ambitions and it delivered. The decisive and extremely steep climb to the Skyviews of Harrad Uwayrid saw four strong men pull away: Buitrago (TBV), Formolo, Grossschartner (UAE) and Guerreiro (MOV). They managed to keep a decent enough gap on the green jersey group to make it clear to the line and battle for the overall lead. Ruben Guerreiro proved to be the fastest beating Formolo and Buitrago to the line. The Portuguese who joined Movistar from EF during the winter break wins his fourth ever pro win and captures the green jersey with one day to go.
A clear sky, very little wind and mild temperatures. The scene was perfectly set for what promised to be the queen stage of this third edition of the Saudi Tour. After what seemed to be an appetizer yesterday with the final climb up to Abu Rakah crowning young Norwegian prince Soren Wearenskjold and Italian king Jonathan Milan, the new green jersey, stage 4 was designed for the GC contenders. With the demanding finish to the Skyviews of Harrat Uwayrid where Maxim Van Gils conquered the 2022 title last year, all eyes were on the climbers. The superb Maraya Concert Hall designed in the Ashar Valley to blend into the surrounding landscape was the host of a picturesque start for the 105 remaining riders. On the menu : 163.4kms including two large loops before a final climb and a long straight towards Harrat Uwayrid.

4 ESCAPEES
After a visit of the splendid Banyon Tree resort during the neutralised start, a fierce battle started straight from the gun. Despite quite a few attempts, it wasn’t before km 24 that three men managed to break away: Engelhardt (JAY), Zukowsky (Q36) and Barac (COR). These three were rapidly caught by Mohd Zariff (TSG) and the gap reached 2’10’’ at km 30. The first Intermediate active sprint was claimed by Barac while the pack started chasing led by team Bahrain Victorious of green jersey Milan and title contender Buitrago. Shortly after, white jersey wearer and 9th overall, Andoni Lopez de Abetzuko (EUS) was forced to retire after an incident with another rider that saw him crash out.

ZUKOWSKY LAST TO BE CAUGHT
The second intermediate active sprint (km 106) was again claimed by Barac while the pack had the escapees under control (1’45’’). At the end of the second of two big loops around AlUla, the pack led by UnoX pushed hard. With 15kms to go, Zukowsky was the last man at the front while his companions were caught. The Canadian was finally caught after 150kms.

FOUR MEN POWER AWAY
As soon as the first kilometres of the final climb the heavy sprinters were dropped: Groenewegen (JAY), Ackermann (UAE), Waerenskjold (UXT). At the front four men managed to power away: Buitrago (TBV), Formolo, Grossschartner (both UAE) and Guerreiro (MOV). At the summit where Guerreiro won the bonus sprint and its precious 3 seconds, the front group had an advantage of 20’’ over the first chasers and 1’ over the green jersey group of Jonathan Milan. There were still eight kilometres to cover until the finish line but the front four managed to remain clear. The stage win eventually went to Ruben Guerreiro ahead of Formolo and Buitrago. The Portuguese who won a stage of the Giro back in 2020 as well as the KOM jersey that same year claims his first win of the season under his new Movistar colours.

GUERREIRO IN GREEN
Thanks to the 13 bonus seconds he captured on the day (10” at the finish + 3” at the bonus sprint), Guerreiro takes command of the general classification with an 8” lead over Formolo and 9” over Buitrago. The 28-year-old will be wearing the green jersey on the final day of the event with the hope of keeping it for good. Meanwhile Buitrago becomes the best young rider (white jersey) and Milan keeps the lead of the points classification (red jersey). Marcus Hansen (UXT) also keep the blue jersey of the most active rider.

Solider Start für BORA – hansgrohe bei der Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana

Im Süden Spaniens begann heute die fünftägige Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana (2.Pro). Zum Auftakt stand eine 190km lange Etappe am Programm – zwei Bergwertungen der zweiten Kategorie und ein schnelles, kurvenreiches Finale stellten die Hauptschwierigkeiten des Tages dar. Eine fünfköpfige Ausreißergruppe bestimmte lange Zeit die Etappe, wurde aber 70km vor dem Ziel am Anstieg zum Coll de Rates gestellt. Nach dem zweiten Anstieg des Tages erreichte ein deutlich reduziertes Peloton die Sprintankunft in Altea. Der Sieg ging an B. Girmay. Die BORA – hansgrohe Kapitäne Aleksandr Vlasov, Lennard Kämna und Bob Jungels erreichten das Ziel mit der ersten Gruppe und ohne Zeitverlust.

Sergio Higuita bleibt in aussichtsreicher Position für die Gesamtwertung

Die vierte Etappe der Vuelta a San Juan führte über 196km von Villicum nach Barreal. Mit einem Berg der ersten Kategorie nach 90km und einer leicht ansteigenden, windanfälligen zweiten Hälfte, der bisher anspruchsvollste Tagesabschnitt. Während Sam Bennett einen schlechten Tag erwischte und bereits früh am Berg abgehängt wurde, schaffte Ryan Mullen den Sprung in die Ausreißergruppe des Tages und konnte so im weiteren Rennverlauf Sergio Higuita unterstützen. Higuita erreichte das Ziel mit der ersten Gruppe und ohne Zeitverlust in der Gesamtwertung. Ryan Mullen war 300m vor dem Ziel in einen Sturz verwickel und erlitt, nach ersten Untersuchungen, zahlreiche Abschürfungen und Prellungen. Mit 18 Sekunden Rückstand in der Gesamtwertung liegt Sergio Higuita vor der Königsetappe am Freitag weiter in aussichtsreicher Position. Der morgige Donnerstag ist ein Ruhetag bei der Vuelta a San Juan.

„Vom Start weg lief zuerst alles nach Plan. Ryan Mullen schaffte den Sprung in die Gruppe, um dort als Helfer für Sergio Higuita bereitzustehen. Dahinter erwischte Sam Bennett aber leider einen schlechten Tag, wurde bereits früh abgehängt und kam, nach Tempoverschärfungen an der Spitze des Feldes, nicht mehr zurück. Auch wenn der Sprint ohne uns stattfand, Sergio verlor heute keine Zeit und liegt vor der Königsetappe am Freitag in solider Ausgangsposition. Das heutige Rennen im Norden Italiens war eine der letzten Chancen der Saison für die Sprinter. Nach einigen Hügeln in der Anfangsphase, führte der Kurs über flache Straßen ehe es im letzten Renndrittel zwei weitere, nicht zu unterschätzende Anstiege gab. Bereits mehr als 30 km vor dem Ziel waren die letzten Ausreißer von einer großen Verfolgergruppe gestellt. BORA-hansgrohe war durch Ben Zwiehoff, Frederik Wandahl, Matteo Fabbro und Felix Großschartner in dieser ungefähr 40-Mann Gruppe vertreten. Zusammen mit Intermarché, EF und Bahrain Victorious machte das Team aus Raubling das Tempo an der Spitze und konnte das Feld bis zur Ziellinie auf Distanz halten. In Beinasco wurde der Sieg in einem Sprint entschieden, wobei Frederik den 10. Platz beim Sieg von I. García Cortina errang.

Reaktionen im Ziel

„Wir haben hier in Italien keinen reinen Sprinter, aber wir sind während des Rennens aufmerksam geblieben und vier von uns haben den Sprung in die Spitzengruppe geschafft. Aus dieser Perspektive war es eine gute Leistung heute. Felix und Matteo haben einen wirklich guten Job gemacht, um mich in der ersten Gruppe zu positionieren, und Ben hat an der Spitze der Gruppe das Tempo gemacht. Also ich glaube, wir haben gut zusammengearbeitet. Auf den letzten Kilometern wurde das Rennen gut kontrolliert, so dass es ziemlich schwer war, dort etwas zu versuchen. Aber alles in allem, wenn man bedenkt, dass wir hier keinen echten Sprinter haben, ist der zehnte Platz für mich ein guter Abschluss meiner Saison, und ich bin damit sehr zufrieden.“ – Frederik Wandahl

„Ohne einen echten Sprinter, war heute unser Ziel für dieses Rennen, das doch für einen Sprint prädestiniert schien, den Anstieg zu nützen, um eine Selektion des Feldes herbeizuführen bzw. möglicherweise mit einer mittelgroßen Gruppe in Richtung Ziel zu fahren. Das hat sehr, sehr gut funktioniert. Ich muss ein großes Kompliment an Ben Zwiehoff richten, der bergauf wirklich einer der stärksten war. Auch Felix Großschartner, Matteo Fabbro und Frederik Wandahl sind sehr gut über den Anstieg gekommen. Und als das Rennen dann völlig explodiert ist, hatten wir vier Fahrer in der ersten Gruppe vom ungefähr 40 Mann. Wir haben dann auch mit Ben viel Energie investiert, um diese Gruppe vorne zu halten, weil mehrere Sprinter in der zweiten Gruppe abgehängt waren. Also nochmal Kompliment an Ben. Am Ende war dann die Absicht etwas Chaos zu kreieren und mit Felix oder Matteo durch eine Soloattacke um den Sieg zu kämpfen. Plan B war, unserem jungen Dänen Frederik Wandahl die Möglichkeit zu geben, aus der Gruppe im Sprint des reduzierten Feldes ein gutes Resultat einzufahren. Leider hat es mit der Soloattacke nicht ganz geklappt. Das Rennen war dann doch zu organisiert und somit hat Frederik seine Chance bekommen und die hat er wirklich sehr solide genutzt. Mit einem zehnten Platz bei so einem prestigeträchtigen Rennen kann er seine zweite Saison im Profiradsport wirklich zufrieden beenden. Ich bin sehr stolz auf die heutige Mannschaftsleistung und freue mich auch, dass Frederik ein schönes Resultat zum Abschluss der Saison erzielen konnte.“ – Christian Pömer, Sportlicher Leiter
