Was für ein Finale! Colin Stüssi wird Gesamtzwölfter der 29. Tour of Slovenia UCI 2. Pro – Oscar Cabedo auf Rang 15 – Team Vorarlberg überzeugt mannschaftlich

Was für ein Herzschlagfinale die letzte Etappe von Vrhnika nach Nove Mesto über 142 Kilometer. Der Slowene Matej Mohoric (Bahrain-Victorios) gewinnt diese vor Tour Gesamtsieger Filippo Zana (ITA / Jayco-Alula). Aber auch das Team Vorarlberg mischte auch heute im Konzert der großen mit!

Colin Stüssi und Oscar Cabedo werden heute wieder von seinen Team Kollegen perfekt platziert bis ins Finale. Im super steilen Schlussanstieg konnten sie mit den besten der Tour mitgehen und sorgten somit für ein weiteres Ausrufezeichen. Colin Stüssi wird heute 15. Oscar Cabedo 29. In der Gesamtwertung können sie ihre Plätze 12 und 15 als beste UCI Continental Fahrer verteidigen.

Colin Stüssi und Lukas Meiler werden in der Berggesamtwertung zudem Vierte und Fünfte. In der Mannschaftsgesamtwertung platziert sich das Team Vorarlberg inmitten der World Tour Teams und UCI Pro Teams auf Rang zehn.

Alles in allem eine überaus starke und vor allem geschlossene Leistung des Team Vorarlberg!

Lennard Kämna verteidigt 6. Gesamtrang auf der 18. Etappe des Giro d’Italia

Der erste von drei schweren Tagen beim Giro begann mit einer Bergankunft in den Dolomiten. Eine 161 km lange Etappe über zwei Anstiege der 1. und zwei der 2. Kategorie waren ein echter Test für die Fahrer, die versuchen wollten, sich in der Gesamtwertung weiter nach vorne zu schieben. Es gab einen harten Kampf um die Fluchtgruppe, die sich im ersten Anstieg formieren konnte und sieben Fahrer setzten sich vom Feld ab. Dahinter in der Maglia Rosa Gruppe attackierte Jumbo – Visma mit 8 km bis zum Ziel. Nur G. Thomas konnte das Tempo halten, während Lennard Kämna abreißen lassen musste. An der Spitze des Rennens kämpften T. Pinot und F. Zana um den Sieg aus der Ausreißergruppe, und der Italiener holte sich den Tagessieg. Lennard überquerte die Ziellinie 1:07 Minuten hinter Roglič und Thomas und verteidigte damit seinen 6. Platz in der Gesamtwertung.

„Heute war wieder ein harter Tag. Ich bin durchgekommen, weil das Team mich bis zum letzten Anstieg gut unterstützt hat. Ich bin da mein Tempo gefahren, weil ich wusste, es wird für mich sehr, sehr schwer werden. Aber ich bin sehr zufrieden mit dem Ergebnis und freue mich darüber, dass ich noch auf dem sechsten Platz in der Gesamtwertung liege.“ – Lennard Kämna

„Heute war die erste von den letzten drei schweren Etappen in den Bergen. Vor dem Giro haben wir ein Recon von dieser Etappe mit Lenni gemacht, also er kannte die Strecke ziemlich gut. Unser Ziel war, bei den stärksten GC-Fahrern zu bleiben und nicht viel Zeit auf die Top 5 einzubüßen. Die Jungs haben im ersten Anstieg ziemlich gelitten, aber trotzdem gelang es ihnen, Lenni gut zu unterstützen. Was Lenni betrifft, ich glaube, er ist ziemlich intelligent gefahren. Er kannte die Straßen und wusste genau, wo die steilsten Passagen waren. Er ist Tempo gefahren und ist immer noch im Rennen um einen guten Platz in der Gesamtwertung. Tour de Hongrie: Sam Bennett Zweiter im Sprint der Auftaktetappe

Zum Auftakt der fünftägigen Tour de Hongrie (2.Pro) in Ungarn stand eine 168,6km lange Flachetappe rund um Szentgotthárd im Roadbook. Eine frühe, aus fünf Fahrern bestehende, Ausreißergruppe wurde vom Feld kontrolliert und schließlich 27km vor dem Ziel gestellt. Nach perfekter Sprintvorbereitung von Ryan Mullen und Danny van Poppel musste sich Sam Bennett im Fotofinish nur D. Groenewegen geschlagen geben.

Reaktionen im Ziel
„Ich denke, es war ein starker Sprint heute! Die Jungs haben den ganzen Tag viel Arbeit geleistet und mir im Finale den Sprint optimal vorbereitet. Groenewegen konnte auch etwas von Danny van Poppels Windschatten profitieren, so wurde es auf der Ziellinie richtig knapp – mit dem besseren Ende für Dylan. Ich habe vor fünf Wochen begonnen, mein Training etwas zu verändern und fühle bereits jetzt eine positive Entwicklung. Ich bin zuversichtlich, in einigen Wochen wieder in absoluter Topform zu sein. Ich freue mich auf die morgige Etappe und die nächste Chance auf einen Etappensieg hier in Ungarn.“ Sam Bennett

Patrick Konrad verpasst knapp die Top Ten auf der 3. Etappe des Giro d’Italia

Die dritte Etappe führte das Feld heute über 213 km von Vasto nach Melfi. Die Strecke war zunächst flach, das Finale wies aber zwei Anstiege auf, weshalb es nicht sicher war, ob ein erneuter Massensprint das Rennen entscheiden würde. Für BORA – hansgrohe war das Ziel auch heute, die Kapitäne Vlasov und Kämna sicher durch den Tag zu bringen. Wegen des hohen Tempos im Anstieg zum Valico dei Laghi di Monticchio mussten mehrere Sprinter abreißen lassen und vor der letzten Steigung waren nur noch rund 50 Fahrer im Feld. Die Teams der bergfesten Sprintern übernahmen danach die Kontrolle und die Etappe wurde letztendlich in einem Sprint eines reduzierten Feldes entschieden. M. Matthews holte den Tagessieg. Der bestplatzierte BORA – hansgrohe Fahrer war Patrick Konrad, der den 11. Platz belegte, während seine Teamkollegen Lennard Kämna und Aleksandr Vlasov die Etappe ebenfalls in der ersten Gruppe beendeten.

„Genau wie gestern wollten wir sicher ins Ziel kommen. Wir hatten heute im Finale schlechte Wetterbedingungen, aber alles ist gut gegangen. Ich muss sagen, dass das Ende der Etappe ziemlich stressig war, aber alles in allem hat das Team gute Arbeit geleistet und am Ende kamen Lenni und ich in der ersten Gruppe ins Ziel.“ – Aleksandr Vlasov
„Wir haben uns heute besonders auf das Finale konzentriert, um sicherzustellen, dass wir immer in einer guten Position sind. Das war wegen des Regens und der rutschigen Straßen nicht unbedingt einfach, aber die Jungs haben die Aufgabe gut gemeistert. Sie hielten sich aus Schwierigkeiten heraus und brachten Lennard und Aleks sicher ins Ziel. Wir hatten nicht die Möglichkeit, heute auf ein Etappenergebnis zu fahren, weil mehrere Sprinter noch im Feld waren, also war es für uns wieder ein Tag, an dem wir konservativ agiert haben.“ – Enrico Gasparotto, Sportlicher Leiter

Sam Bennett sprintet aufs Podest auf 5. Etappe der UAE Tour

Auf der 182 km langen heutigen Etappe, die quer durch die Wüste führte, waren die schnellen Männer wieder gefragt, allerdings musste man heute auch den Wind in den Augen behalten. Nach 15 km in einem Ausreißerquartett setzte sich T. de Gendt von seinen Begleitern ab und fuhr solo, bis er mit noch 20 km zum Ziel wieder gestellt war. Durch eine plötzliche Tempoverschärfung teilte sich das Feld kurzzeitig in zwei Gruppen aber nach dem Zusammenschluss manövrierte sich BORA – hansgrohe mit an die Spitze und kämpfte um eine gute Ausgangsposition im Finale. Nach einem starken Lead Out von Danny van Poppel, eröffnete Sam Bennett seinen Sprint und kam beim Sieg von D. Groenewegen als Dritter ins Ziel.

Reaktionen im Ziel
„Am Ende war es ein ziemlich guter Tag für uns. Leider ist Patrick zweimal gestürzt, aber ihm geht’s gut und das haben wir auch auf der Windkante am Ende und nochmals im Finale gesehen. Hochachtung auch vor Emu, der die Jungs heute wirklich gut unterstützt hat. Ansonsten haben wir im Finale ein bisschen die Kontrolle verloren, aber Danny hat Sam wirklich in eine perfekte Position gebracht. Es hat heute nur wenig gefehlt und wir werden noch analysieren, woran es gefehlt hat. Das Ergebnis stimmt uns natürlich wieder positiv für den morgigen Tag.“ – Bernhard Eisel, Sportlicher Leiter

After a spectacular opening ceremony yesterday evening, there were more fireworks at the finish of stage 1 of the Saudi Tour. As expected the pack made it bunched to Khaybar where Dylan Groenewegen (Team Jayco AlUla) flew to his first success this year in his opening race. The Dutchman who carries the colours of AlUla where this tour is staged comfortably beat Dusan Rajovic (Team Bahrain Victorious) and Max Walscheid (Cofidis) to the line and captures the first overall leader’s red jersey.
Before even the first pedal strokes, the third edition of the Saudi Tour started with a bang on the eve of the first stage. Fire dancers, over 600 drones in the sky, 16 teams gathered on five different stages, a mapping show on the magnificent Elephant Rock: the opening ceremony was bigger, greater and ever more spectacular than ever. Never had a team presentation been so impressive, and that was just an appetizer of what the race had to offer. After the opening festivities, it was time to battle it out for the first day of racing: a 180.5-km stage from the International Airport of Al Ula to the city of Khaybar. 111 riders took off shortly before noon and would have to deal with a fairly strong head wind as they headed to the south-east.

6 IN THE LEAD

After 3kms of racing six riders powered away: Hansen (UXT), Goikoetxea (EUS), Van Der Bekken (BWB), Iacchi (COR), Mohd Zariff (TSG) and Takeyama (JCL). Their advantage grew rapidly over a rather quiet pack: 2’50’’ after 10kms, 4’10’’ after 20. The first Intermediate average sprint (km 62) was claimed by Hansen while the gap reached a maximum 5’20’’. Under the influence of Team Jayco AlUla of Dylan Groenewegen, the pack moved closer to the escapees.

HANSEN, LAST SURVIVOR

Just before the second intermediate active sprint, Peio Goikoetxea pulled away in his quest for the most active rider’s blue jersey. Just after making it first to the line, the Spaniard was caught by his mail rival Hansen. At the bonus sprint (km 135), Hansen outsprinted his opponent to conquer the blue jersey. The Dane would eventually be the last man standing as Goikoetxea stopped his efforts due to cramps. With 25kms to go, Markus Hansen could still enjoy a 2’ lead but his solo adventure stopped just under 15kms from the finish.

BUNCHED SPRINT AS EXPECTED

Despite timid attempts and a crash, the pack remained bunched all the way to the final straight in Khaybar. Perfectly led out by his blue and white train including the precious likes of Luka Mezgec, Dylan Groenewegen comfortably conquered his first win of the season. The Dutchman who had already won two stages in Saudi Arabia last year beat Dusan Rajovic (TBV) and Max Walscheid (COF) to the line.

GREEN JERSEY FOR GROENEWEGEN

The five-time Tour de France stage winner naturally takes command of the general classification and will be wearing the leader’s Green Jersey for tomorrow’s second stage that heads to Shalal Sijlyat Rocks. He also leads the points classification while Marcus Hansen will be wearing the best young rider’s white jersey.

The Saudi Tour, launched in 2020 under the aegis of the Saudi Ministry of Sport and Saudi Cycling Federation, is returning in 2023 for its third edition. Sixteen teams in the international peloton will battle it out in five stages held from 30 January to 3 February. The 2023 route is a new opportunity for the field to discover AlUla, an oasis city in north-western Saudi Arabia, long a major stopover on the incense route and the road to Mecca. As well as bringing the unprecedented promise of a trip back in time, it will pull back the veil on a desert that only a few lucky tourists have got to explore so far. AlUla showcases the heritage of a 7,000-year-old civilisation, jaw-dropping rock formations and natural canyons, an array of adventure sports activities, and contemporary art facilities boasting unique architecture, such as Maraya, which will host the finish of the race. AlUla is also famous for its monumental tombs from the Nabataean period, carved into red sandstone cliffs: Hegra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site awaiting the peloton in the final stage.

As usual, the 2023 Saudi Tour, scheduled to take place from 30 January to 3 February, will be one of the first professional cycling races of the year and kick off the season for quite a few riders. The five stages on the programme trace a star-shaped route around AlUla, Saudi Arabia’s little-known archaeological gem.

The opening stage will take off from AlUla Airport and set course for the gorgeous Khaybar oasis.
AlUla International Airport, inaugurated in 2021, is is a beautifully designed piece of architecture that blends into the landscape and now offers direct international flights from Dubai, Cairo and Paris. The finish line of this stage will be set up in Khaybar, which is also known for its long history on the incense route. The city, planted in the heart of a volcanic field against the backdrop of majestic mountains, aspires to become a premium tourist destination.

Stage 2 will come to an end at the majestic Shalal Sijlyat Rocks after a 184 km journey.

Stage 3, which is 159.2 km long, will depart from Al Manshiyah Train Station, once an important stop on the legendary Hejaz Railway, a 1,300 km single-track line stretching from Damascus to Medina. Completed in 1907, the station saw thousands of travellers and pilgrims go through, some of whom stayed to create new local communities.

Stage 4 promises to be breathtaking, with a flying start from Maraya towards the incredible panoramas of Harrat Uwayrid. Maraya means ‚mirrors‘ in Arabic. The building serves as a multipurpose concert, entertainment and conference venue in AlUla. A brainchild of the Italian designer Florian Boje from Giò Forma, located in the Ashar Valley, Maraya has already hosted world-famous artists such as OneRepublic, John Legend, Alicia Keys and Andrea Bocelli, to name but a few, as well as local and regional artists. Maraya will also bring down the curtain on the race the next day.

The closing stage of this Saudi Tour will get under way from AlUla Old Town and give riders the opportunity to feast their eyes on the Nabataean site of Hegra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site on Condé Nast Traveler’s list of Seven Wonders of the World for 2023.

Located 1,100 km from Riyadh, in North-West Saudi Arabia, AlUla is a place of extraordinary natural and human heritage. Jai Hindley und Giovanni Aleotti in den Top-10 auf Schlussetappe der Tour Down Under

Die letzte Etappe der Tour Down Under war mit 112,5 km ebenfalls kurz, beinhaltete aber fünf Anstiege. Nach einigen erfolglosen Versuchen gelang es einer Ausreißergruppe mit Marco Haller, sich vom Feld abzusetzen. Mit noch 30 km bis zum Ziel wurde die Spitze wieder eingefangen und Jai Hindley, Giovanni Aleotti and Maximilian Schachmann rückten in einem reduzierten Feld nach vorne, um sich vor dem Schlussanstieg gut zu positionieren. Max versuchte dann auf den letzten 20 km zu attackieren, wurde aber wieder schnell zurückgeholt. Am Ende gewann S. Yates den Bergaufsprint aus einer Dreiergruppe, während Jai und Giovanni als Sechster bzw. Achter über die Ziellinie rollten. Der Australier verbesserte sich damit auf den 16. Rang und sein italienischer Teamkollege auf den 17. Platz in der Gesamtwertung.

Reaktionen im Ziel
„Es war wirklich heiß heute und wir sind mehr oder weniger den ganzen Tag Vollgas auf der wirklich anspruchsvollen Strecke gefahren. Die Jungs waren immer vorne dabei, sei es in der Ausreißergruppe oder bei Attacken. Ich muss sagen, das war wirklich gut. Es war eine ziemlich schwere Strecke, aber wahrscheinlich nicht hart genug für die reinen Bergfahrer, um richtig wegzukommen. Ich glaube wir haben trotzdem einen guten Job gemacht und die Jungs haben immer versucht, mir zu helfen, um das bestmögliche Ergebnis zu erzielen. Sechster war die beste Platzierung, die wir heute erreichen konnten. Aber ich glaube, wir nehmen viel Positives aus dem Rennen mit, und das ist am Ende der Tour Down Under auch wichtig.“ – Jai Hindley

„Unser Ziel war es heute, mit Maximilian Schachmann in die Spitzengruppe zu gehen und um den Etappensieg mitzukämpfen. Das Unterfangen hat anfangs eigentlich recht gut ausgesehen, Max hat sich nämlich sehr aktiv gezeigt, konnte aber am Ende nicht in die Spitzengruppe vorstoßen. Wir waren dann mit Marco Haller in der Ausreißergruppe vertreten. Leider hatte die Spitze nie eine richtige Chance gehabt, weil der maximale Zeitabstand immer unter einer Minute geblieben ist. Am Ende haben wir auf ein hartes Finale gehofft, um mit Jai Hindley und Giovanni Aleotti noch eine Chance zu haben. Giovanni und Jai haben sich solide präsentiert, konnten aber nicht im Sprint um den Etappensieg eingreifen. Und somit fahren wir hier nicht ganz zufrieden weiter zum Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race, weil wir weder den angestrebten Etappensieg noch die Top Ten Platzierung in der Gesamtwertung erreicht haben. Man muss aber sagen, dass wir gerade bezüglich Etappensieg großes Pech hatten, weil wir ja Jordi Meeus schon nach der ersten Etappe verloren haben. Insofern war das Glück nicht ganz auf unserer Seite. Aber bezüglich des Great Ocean Road Race sind wir sehr zuversichtlich, den Australientrip noch mit einem guten Gefühl und einem schönen Erfolg zu beenden.“ – Christian Pömer, Sportlicher Leiter
