La Vuelta: Alle Etappen der Spanien-Rundfahrt live bei Eurosport und bei GCN

10. August 2021 – Über 3.336 Kilometer führt die Vuelta a España 2021 das Peloton von Burgos nach Santiago de Compostela. Eurosport überträgt die dritte große Landesrundfahrt des Jahres vom 14. August bis 5. September auf allen Plattformen. 19 der 21 Etappen sind bei Eurosport 1 im Free-TV zu sehen. Alle Etappen im Kampf um das Rote Trikot sind werbefrei bei Eurosport mit Joyn PLUS+ sowie über das Global Cycling Network (GCN) via GCN+ und die GCN-App zu erleben.
Am Mikrofon begleiten Kommentator Gerhard Leinauer und die Experten Jens Voigt und Robert Bengsch die Teams über die iberische Halbinsel.
Die Strecke sollte auch in diesem Jahr den Bergspezialisten in die Karten spielen. Auf sieben Bergetappen und vier Tagesabschnitten im Mittelgebirge bekommen die Kletterer ihre Chancen, die Konkurrenz in die Schranken zu weisen. Selbst das lange Zeitfahren auf der letzten Etappe zum Zielort Santiago de Compostela weist ein eher hügeliges Profil auf.
Eurosport-Experte Jens Voigt sieht einen Fahrer ganz klar vor allen anderen. “Favorit ist für mich ganz klar Primoz Roglic. Er alleine bekommt bei mir fünf von fünf möglichen Sternen. Warum? Bei Paris-Nizza und der Tour de France hat er durch Stürze alle Chancen verloren. Er möchte nach der Baskenland-Rundfahrt noch ein Podium bei einer großen Rundfahrt und als Zeitfahr-Olympiasieger ist die Form da.” Hinter dem Slowenen vergibt Voigt dreimal vier Sterne für Egan Bernal und Richard Carapaz. “Als Sieger beim Giro d’Italia und Goldmedaillengewinner bei Olympia muss man die beiden für das Klassement einplanen. Auch Mikel Landa ist ein nach seinem Sieg in Burgos bereit für das Podium – und er bringt eine starke Mannschaft mit”, sagt Voigt, der zudem noch einer Hand voll weiterer Fahrer Außenseiterchancen auf die ersten drei Plätze im Gesamtklassement einräumt, darunter Romain Bardet, Felix Großschartner und Alejandro Valverde.
“Kurz gesagt: Primoz Roglic wird gewinnen, und um die Plätze zwei und drei werden sich Mikel Landa und Egan Bernal streiten. Seit Bernals Toursieg 2019 konnte das Team Ineos Grenadiers Roglic im direkten Vergleich nicht mehr schlagen und das wird auch hier so sein”, zieht Voigt sein Fazit zu den Favoriten.

Für deutschen und deutschsprachigen Fahrer sieht Voigt eher Chancen auf Etappenerfolge. “Mit fünf Fahrern stellt Deutschland nur ein kleines Kontingent. Aber mit Max Schachmann können wir auf einen Etappensieg setzen. Alle anderen deutschen Fahrer werden sich sicher mehr in der Helferrolle wiederfinden und bekommen nur dann eine Chance, wenn sie eine glückliche Ausreißergruppe erwischen”, sagt Voigt, der neben Schachmann auch dem einzigen Schweizer im Feld einen Tagessieg zutraut. “Gino Mäder ist – wie man aufgrund des Saisonverlaufs sieht – immer für einen Etappensieg gut”, sagt Voigt. “Die beiden Luxemburger und das Trio aus Österreich werden ihre Chancen in Fluchtgruppen suchen müssen. Da sehe ich keinen, der im Hochgebirge bei den Favoriten mitfahren oder im Sprint Caleb Ewan schlagen kann. Bei elf deutschsprachigen Fahrern bin ich aber sehr optimistisch, dass mindestens einer davon einen Etappensieg einfahren wird.”

Einen schnellen Blick wirft der Eurosport-Experte auch noch auf die Sprinter. “Bei den Sprintern gibt es den großen Zweikampf zwischen den beiden Australiern Caleb Ewan und Michael Matthews. Ich sehe mehr Sprintsiege für den Lotto-Soudal-Fahrer Ewan, aber einen deutlichen Vorteil auf das Sprinttrikot für den bergfesten Matthews vom Team BikeExchange.”

Eurosport ist seit Jahren für alle Radsportfans die erste Adresse, wenn es um Live-Radsport geht. Mit dem Zusammenschluss der Streamingplattform GCN hat der Sender seine Position als „Home of Cycling“ weiter gefestigt und bietet so das größte Angebot an Premium-Radsport. Six currently active riders took place on the final podium of the three Grand Tours: Alejandro Valverde, Vincenzo Nibali, Chris Froome, Nairo Quintana, Primoz Roglic and Richard Carapaz. If we extend the statistics to cycling in the 21st century, Carlos Sastre, Denis Menchov, Alberto Contador, Cadel Evans and Joaquim „Purito“ Rodriguez join them. But only one athlete, in the entire history of cycling, has achieved this treble and won the Olympic gold medal in the road race: Richard Carapaz, winner of the Giro 2019, 2nd in La Vuelta 20 and 3rd in the Tour 2021.

Richard Carapaz only returned to competition this year in the Volta a Catalunya (21st) at the end of March and was just as discreet at the Itzulia Pays Basque (19th), for the double reason that his 2020 season was ended late (November 8 with La Vuelta) and that he had big ambitions for this summer. In fact, he has perfectly managed his form: winner of the Tour de Suisse in mid-June, 3rd in the Tour de France and Olympic champion in July. It would have been more than enough to return and enjoy his glory at home. Before him, only one Ecuadorian athlete had won Olympic gold: Jefferson Pérez in racewalking in 1996, and a week after Carapaz, Neisi Dajomes did the same in weightlifting. But he has a still unfulfilled task that is close to his heart: to win La Vuelta.

Last year, instead of expressing any bitterness about the narrowly missed victory (2nd with a gap of 24“ to Primoz Roglic), he left the event by declaring: „I’m leaving very happy because I lived the end of the race with a lot of hope, and throughout the course, I saw a lot of Ecuadorian flags, it was beautiful. I felt special support. These were really great times!“ For the record, this was an autumnal Vuelta with a small number of spectators present. Richard Carapaz’s emotions are therefore likely to be increased tenfold with the support of the „responsible public“ (masked and concerned about social distancing) expected this summer, if he gets back „La Roja“, the red leader’s jersey he wore five days in 2020 before giving it a second time to Primoz Roglic at Mirador de Ézaro (in the ITT). He placed one last banderilla, sharp and sustained, on the final ascent of La Vuelta 20, the Alto de la Covatilla. „I finished this race with the same smile I had when I arrived because I gave everything, it was a beautiful La Vuelta, I had a lot of fun there“, he concluded at the end of this third participation in the Spanish Grand Tour.

Richard Carapaz was a bit late in becoming a hero of La Vuelta unlike the Giro d’Italia where he won (stage 8, Montevergine di Mercogliano), wore the white jersey and finished 4th overall in his first participation in 2018, before bringing the pink jersey all the way to Verona the following year. But it was La Vuelta that served as his first Grand Tour, in 2017, undoubtedly the edition that least favored Movistar, his team at the time (no stage victory, Dani Moreno the best ranked in the final, 18th). For his debut, Richard Carapaz attacked several times without success (his best result: 11th on the Angliru, the day Alberto Contador came out in style on the eve of his end of career). In 2018, despite his record of service at the Giro, he resolved to act as a teammate, in favour of Alejandro Valverde (5th overall after having occupied the podium for a long time) and Nairo Quintana (designated leader at the start, 8th at the finish).
He was still due to participate in La Vuelta 19, but he left the squad at the last moment following a crash in a criterium he rode in the Netherlands the previous Sunday. He was on the way out from Movistar, the team that had accompanied him in his professional debut following his apprenticeship at Lizarte. He often reiterates, citing his former amateur team in Navarre, that he owes the launch of his professional cycling career to Spain. Last year, he was equally grateful to Chris Froome, his Ineos teammate who had helped him despite the difficulties encountered in his physical reconstruction following his terrible accident in 2019, but he did not have the strongest armada to support him.

This time, the British team are lining up particularly impressive names on paper: Egan Bernal, Richard Carapaz, Adam Yates, Pavel Sivakov, Tom Pidcock, Jhonathan Narvaez, Salvatore Puccio and Dylan van Baarle! Carapaz is therefore not the only Olympic champion freshly covered with gold in this squad since Pidcock, 22, cyclo-cross prodigy and already protagonist of the great classics, won the MTB event in Tokyo.
„It is a great honour for us, the organisers, that Team Ineos has fielded such a selection of champions“, said Javier Guillén, General Manager of La Vuelta. „It says a lot about their ambitions. Bernal and Carapaz are the two current leaders in South American cycling and it is a continent that is dear to us. Both have the capacity to win the event like two Colombians did before them [Luis Herrera in 1987 and Nairo Quintana in 2016]. Carapaz is now an icon with its Olympic title. The mastery with which he won the road race has thrilled aficionados all over the world, I think. We also appreciate his kindness and his smile. He has everything to be a hero of La Vuelta.“

Pech zum Auftakt: BORA – hansgrohe verliert Ackermann und Burghardt auf der ersten Etappe der Polenrundfahrt

Mehr als 200 Kilometer warteten heute bei der ersten Etappe der Polenrundfahrt auf das Peloton am Weg nach Chelm. Drei Fahrer bildeten die Gruppe des Tages, das Feld hatte das Rennen aber immer unter Kontrolle. Leider musste Pascal Ackermann heute bereits früh aufgeben. Nach einer Krankheit in der letzten Woche ist er noch nicht wieder so fit, wie das Team gehofft hatte. Nachdem die Ausreißer früh eingeholt waren, folgten erneut Attacken aus dem Feld. Es ereignete sich auch ein Sturz, in den Marcus Burghardt verwickelt war. Leider musste auch Marcus das Rennen aufgeben mit Verdacht auf einen gebrochenen Arm. Am Ende kam es zum erwarteten Massensprint, den P. Bauhaus für sich entscheiden konnte. Nach einem turbulenten ersten Tag für BORA – hansgrohe erreichte Michael Schwarzmann als Bester des Teams Rang 15.

„Heute ging so ziemlich alles schief. Zuerst musste Pascal das Rennen aufgeben, nachdem er nicht ganz fit war. Dann war Marcus in einen Sturz verwickelt, auch er musste das Rennen verlassen. Er ist im Krankenhaus für genaue Untersuchungen, aber es sieht nach einem gebrochenen Arm aus. Im Finale wollten wir dann für Giovanni fahren, aber er wurde durch einen weiteren Sturz aufgehalten. Am Ende war dann Schwarzi unser bester Fahrer auf Rang 15. Viel mehr kann man da eigentlich nicht sagen, wir hatten heute einfach Pech. THE HEROES OF LA VUELTA (2/6) FABIO ARU

Of the three La Vuelta winners who have announced their participation this year, Fabio Aru is one of the two, along with Primoz Roglic, to have worn the leader’s jersey of the three Grand Tours. The third, Alejandro Valverde only participated once in the Giro d’Italia where he won a stage and finished on the podium (3rd in 2016) but without donning the pink tunic. The Italian’s second place in the Tour de Burgos is a sign of his return to the forefront, at the age of 31.
La Vuelta 2015 is remembered for its turnaround on the eve of the finish. An edition marked by a duel of two athletes with opposing physique – the great roller Tom Dumoulin, six days with La Roja, against the little beetle Esteban Chaves – who eventually saw the main prize snatched away from them by Fabio Aru, predestined champion whose trajectory recalled Vincenzo Nibali: “Il Cavaliere dei 4 mori” (the knight of the 4 Moors) is from an island, Sardinia, as “the shark” got his nickname from the Strait of Messina, between his native Sicily and mainland Italy, and, above all, the two men registered La Vuelta as the first Grand Tour in their winning records (Nibali five years before Aru).

Wearing the pink Giro jersey in 2015 (one day), Aru, winner of a 2017 Tour de France stage at La Planche des Belles Filles like Nibali in 2014, remains the only one to have dispossessed the great Chris Froome and his untouchable Team Sky of the yellow jersey, if only for two days. It also happened in 2017, thanks to a steep finale towards Peyragudes. Aru loves the Pyrenees. He has a soft spot for Spain and its identity. He is a man of letters, who studied in classical high school. He knows the history and the Mediterranean culture that connects Sardinia to Catalonia. The Catalan-inspired flag still flies in Alghero, in the northwest of the island.

The start of his history with La Vuelta dates back to a stage victory on September 3, 2014, in San Miguel de Aralar (stage 11). He put on the ropes the leader of the event, Alberto Contador, and the impressive parterre of favorites then composed of Chris Froome, Alejandro Valverde and Joaquim „Purito“ Rodriguez, but no longer Nairo Quintana, forced to retire on that day, a stone’s throw away from his European home in Pamplona (winner of the Giro that year, he was racing at Movistar). In the commentary, Pedro Delgado had let out a cry of surprise tinged with compliments when the young Italian, 24 years old at the time, revealed to the general public three months earlier by his stage victory at Plan di Montecampione on the Giro, had accelerated 2 km from the top of the steep Navarre ascent. He made his first real attack 1.5 km from the goal, still with Contador on the lookout, and with 400 m of climbing to go, he soared on his own to take his first victory outside of Italy.

„Did you see who I beat?“ Fabio Aru marvelled as he got off his bike. Indeed, the standings behind him were full of stars: 2nd Alejandro Valverde, 3rd Joaquim ‘Purito’ Rodriguez, 4th Alberto Contador, 5th Chris Froome, 6th Rigoberto Uran, 7th Samuel Sanchez and 8th Dan Martin! „Aru reminds me of myself when I was young“, Alberto Contador said as he was about to win his third and final La Vuelta. „He has the same pedal stroke and the same way of riding. The same change of pace on the hill as well. And he’s a brave one! He will be the star of the next few years.“ Four days earlier, Contador had turned to Aru within the peloton: „How are you? “ The Italian believed the Madrileño was speaking to their mutual friend Paolo Tiralongo. „Can you imagine, Paolo, he was talking to me!“, Aru marvelled.

This victory would be followed with more success a week later, when Aru won again, at Monte Castrove in Meis (stage 18), before completing the Spanish Grand Tour in fifth position in the final standings established at… Santiago de Compostela – a sign of fate for his return to La Vuelta 21, also finishing in the emblematic Galician city? After his triumph in 2015, Fabio Aru finished 13th in La Vuelta 17, a race he had approached tired after his very fine Tour de France, then 23rd in 2018. We saw him cry at a stage start in 2019 before his abandonment (13th stage) because he could not express his talents. He suffered from back pain and experienced various health concerns.
„It’s a pleasure to see him come back to form just before La Vuelta“, general manager Javier Guillén rejoices, „because Fabio Aru has left us fond memories when he was one of the great protagonists. As Alberto Contador said, he is a brave man. In full possession of his means, he offers spectacular cycling. He is completely in the spirit of La Vuelta.“

Alexandr Vlasov verstärkt BORA – hansgrohe

Zumindest bis Ende 2024 wird Vlasov im Trikot von BORA – hansgrohe zu sehen sein. Der Russe gilt als exzellenter Rundfahrer, denn er ist nicht nur stark am Berg, sondern konnte in diesem Jahr auch durch hervorragende Leistungen im Zeitfahren brillieren.
„Alexandr ist sicherlich eines der größten Talente was Rundfahrten betrifft und wir sind sehr froh, dass er sich für uns entschieden hat. Interesse gab es bekanntlich ja von einigen Teams. Wir werden mit ihm ganz klar die Grand Tours ins Auge fassen. Mittelfristig ist das Ziel die Tour de France, aber auch er muss noch lernen und sich weiter entwickeln, was beim Giro oder der Vuelta vielleicht einfacher ist. Generell sind wir im Bereich der Klassementsfahrer nun sehr breit aufgestellt, aber das war auch unser Ziel. Jeder von den Jungs wird seine Chancen bekommen. Ich bin zuversichtlich, dass wir ein tolles Team formen werden, dass uns taktische Möglichkeiten eröffnet und uns in die Lage versetzt, ganz vorne mitzumischen.“ – Ralph Denk, Team Manager

„Ich freue mich sehr auf die kommenden Jahre bei BORA – hansgrohe, aber ich möchte mich auch für die Zeit bei Astana bedanken. Es waren erfolgreiche Saisonen und meine ersten Schritte im Profiradsport. Nun ist es aber an der Zeit für etwas Neues. Mein Fokus liegt eindeutig auf den Grand Tours. Es wird darum gehen, mit BORA – hansgrohe weiter hart zu arbeiten, um mich weiterzuentwickeln, denn ich möchte eines Tages eine der großen drei Rundfahrten gewinnen. Ich denke aber auch, dass ich Möglichkeiten bei schweren Eintagesrennen habe, ich war schon Dritter der Lombardeirundfahrt und ein Sieg bei einem Monument wäre natürlich sehr schön. Auch das kann möglich sein. Das Team und ich haben die gleichen Ziele vor Augen, und wir sehen auch den Weg dorthin, nun müssen wir zusammen konsequent diesen Weg verfolgen.“ – Alexandr Vlasov

Dritter Etappensieg für Millennium, aber Stiebjahn schnappt sich die Gesamtwertung

Trockenes und teilweise sonniges Wetter bescherte den gut 300 verbliebenen Starter*innen des diesjährigen Rothaus Bike Giro Hochschwarzwald einen würdigen und verdienten Abschlusstag nach vier strapaziösen Etappen rund um Grafenhausen-Rothaus und Todtnau-Notschrei. Mit Chiara Beer und Ian Millennium gab es bekannte Gesichter auf dem obersten Treppchen der Tageswertung, aber Janine Schneider und Simon Stiebjahn ließen sich den Gesamtsieg jeweils nicht mehr nehmen.

Es war der mit 51,6 Kilometern kürzeste Tagesabschnitt der diesjährigen Ausgabe, aber gesamt 1500 Höhenmeter und ein langer Schlussanstieg auf über 1300 Meter ü. M. forderte nochmals alle Kraftreserven von den Biker*innen, die nach drei Tagen noch übrig waren. Bei den Elite Herren gingen es die Favoriten dieses Mal etwas ruhiger an und bis zur zweiten Verpflegungsstelle nach 34,8 Kilometern blieb eine große Gruppe mit allen Favoriten zusammen. So musste der lange Schlussanstieg hinauf zum Stübenwasenlift für die Entscheidung um die Tages- und Gesamtwertung sorgen. Ian Millennium (Cycling Odense) hatte sich von seinem kleinen Rückschlag am Vortag und dem verbundenen Verlust der Gesamtführung bestens erholt und ergriff im letzten Uphill-Trail des Tages die Initiative und setzte sich entscheidend von seinen üblichen Mitstreitern Simon Stiebjahn, Martin Frey (beide Team Bulls), Marc Stutzmann (Team Texpa-Simplon) und Vinzent Dorn (DMT Racing Team) ab. Am Ende reichte es für Millennium zu einem Solosieg mit 17 Sekunden Vorsprung auf Stiebjahn und damit zum dritten Etappengewinn beim diesjährigen Rothaus Bike Giro Hochschwarzwald 2021. In der Gesamtwertung ließ sich Stiebjahn allerdings die Butter nicht mehr vom Brot nehmen und hielt seinen schärfsten Widersacher Stutzmann in Schach, so dass am Ende eine Gesamtfahrzeit von 10:18:52 Stunden und ein Vorsprung von 17 Sekunden zum dritten Gesamtsieg nach 2017 und 2018 reichten. Hinter dem heutigen Tagesdritten Stutzmann verteidigte Millennium souverän seinen dritten Gesamtrang mit 42 Sekunden Rückstand auf Stiebjahn.

Bei den Elite Damen kontrollierte Janine Schneider vom German Technology Racing Team jederzeit das Fahrerfeld und sicherte auf der letzten Etappe souverän ihren Gesamtsieg, zumal ihre schärfste Konkurrentin Robyn de Groot heute nicht den besten Tag erwischte und als Tagesvierte erstmals das Podest verpasste. In der Tageswertung musste Schneider allerdings der erneut bärenstarken Chiara Beer (RSC St. Ingbert) den Vortritt lassen, die in 2:27:48 Stunden mit 29 Sekunden Vorsprung auf Schneider ihren zweiten Etappensieg auf dem Notschrei bejubeln durfte. Ihren zweiten Podestplatz und den erneuten dritten Rang wie bei der Freitagsetappe konnte die Schweizerin Janina Wüst (Team Schmid Velosport) mit 5:02 Minuten Rückstand auf Beer einheimsen. In der Gesamtwertung siegte Janine Schneider am Ende souverän in einer Fahrzeit von 12:24:46 Stunden und einem Vorsprung von 6:57 Minuten auf die Südafrikanerin de Groot. Mit 17:45 Minuten landete die zweifache Etappensiegerin Chiara Beer auf dem dritten Gesamtrang nach den vier Etappen mit insgesamt 256 Kilometern und 7200 Höhenmetern beim diesjährigen Rothaus Bike Giro Hochschwarzwald 2021.

Ben Hermans caps it off

Ben Hermans controlled the last stage at perfection to take home the trophy of the Arctic Race of Norway he missed out six years ago. Odd Christian Eiking settled for second as he only gained two seconds, half of what he needed, over the race leader in the final uphill in Harstad where Philipp Walsleben outclassed Niki Terpstra for the stage win. Best young rider Victor Lafay rounded out the podium of the 8th edition of the northernmost bike race that showcased stunning landscapes once again.

Nine riders in the lead
106 riders took the start of the fourth and last stage of the 8th Arctic Race of Norway in Gratangen, for the grand finale in Harstad. 9 riders took off early: Erik Resell (Uno-X), Aimé De Gendt (Intermarché-Wanty Gobert), Niki Terpstra (TotalEnergies), Thomas Champion (Cofidis), Philipp Walsleben (Alpecin-Fenix), Alexandre Delettre and Michael Edouard Grosu (Delko), Ceriel Desal (Bingoal Pauwels Sauce WB) and Tore André Vabø (Team Coop). The standard gap allowed by Israel-Start Up-Nation at the helm was 2’30’’ – the time difference recorded at half way into the race.

Terpstra and Walsleben with 5km to go
The Euskaltel team was eager to bring the breakaway back as the peloton reached the finishing circuit in Harstad. The time difference was down to 1’ with 22km to go as Resell sped up the head of the race. Grosu got reeled in 20km before the finish, followed by Desal and Vabø. Champion lost contact with the front group with 14km to go. Walsleben upped the tempo with 10.5km remaining meanwhile Torjus Sleen (Uno-X) went in between and Israel-Start Up-Nation seized the reins of the bunch, after which the time difference went from 30’’ back to 1’. Henok Mulhubran (Qhubeka-NextHash) tried his luck with 6km to go. Terpstra and Walsleben formed a leading duo 5km before the end.

Eiking only two seconds ahead of Hermans
Terpstra and Walsleben had 25’’ lead with 2.5km to go and the final uphill yet to come. They managed to stay away and Walsleben, a former cyclo-cross rider, had what it takes to rush to the win up the hill against a Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix winner. Delettre managed to avoid the return of the peloton to finish third of stage 4. Eiking gave it all to finish with the same time as the Frenchman and two seconds ahead of the peloton that included his direct rivals Hermans and Lafay. In the end, the 35 year old from Belgium who already won stage races like the Tour of Oman and the Tour of Austria in the past concluded the Arctic Race of Norway with no hiccups, just as he wished after his victory in the queen stage to Målselv on Saturday.

What a day! Alexis Guerin verewigt sich mit Sieg am La Toussuire – Roland Thalmann Gesamtdritter der Tour de Savoie Mont Blanc!

Was für ein Sonntag!!!
Der heutige letzte Abschnitt eine „wahre mythische Königsetappe“ mit 4352 Höhenmeter verteilt auf 124 Kilometer. Nach dem offiziellen Start in St. Jean de Maurienne warteten drei gewaltige Anstiege, bevor es hinauf ging zum geschichtsträchtigen Col de La Toussuire (1691m)!

Werner Salmen, der sportliche Leiter, darf ab heute „Fux“ genannt werden. Mit einer klaren Taktik ausgestattet leisteten ALLE Teamfahrer ihren super Job. Sie lieferten Thalmann und Guerin am Fuß des La Toussuire ideal ab. Guerin attackiert und stürmt in Richtung Ziel. Sämtliche Kolumbianer und Pro Continental Fahrer zermürbten sich. Guerin ist vorne, dann setzt Thalmann nach und zerlegt seine Gruppe mit der Minichance in der Gesamtwertung von drei auf zwei zu klettern. Am Schluss sollte es reichen um wenige Zehntelsekunden für „Roli“. Guerin gewinnt solo die Etappe 26 Sekunden vor Cepeda (COL/Androni). Thalmann kommt auf Rang drei geflogen mit 31 Sekunden.

Linus Stari gewinnt Elite Wertung beim Highlander Radmarathon!

Der Lustenauer Linus Stari gewinnt nach 5h 9min die Elite Wertung beim heutigen Radmarathon in Hohenems über 187 Kilometer und 4040 Höhenmeter. Der Youngster fuhr ein starkes Rennen uns siegte vor dem Niederländer Kenny Nijssen (Continental Team Sweet Nice) und dem Deutschen Stefan Brandlmeier (Team Hanau). Auf Rang zehn Dominik Amann!

Like in 2015, Ben Hermans won the queen stage to Målselv and moved into the lead, ahead of Odd Christian Eiking and Victor Lafay. With a slim advantage, the Belgian from Israel-Start Up-Nation hopes for a better outcome than six years ago.

Five riders in the lead
107 riders took the start of stage 3 in Finnsnes for what was considered the queen stage with the much anticipated finish in the “Alpine village” of Målselv and the Prime Minister Erna Solberg in attendance. After a very active start and several skirmishes, a group of five riders went clear off the peloton: stage 2 winner Martin Laas (Bora-Hansgrohe), King of the Mountains Fredrik Dversnes (Team Coop), Jens Reynders (Sport Vlaanderen-Baloise), Xabier Azparren (Euskaltel) and Julien Duval (AG2R-Citroën). Duval passed the first intermediate sprint at Gibostad (km 22) in first position. Dversnes extended his lead in the KOM competition as he crested all four category 2 climbs ahead of his breakaway companions. The leading quintet approached the last 50km with its maximum advantage of 3’.

Seb Berwick keeps attackers on a leash
It was clear for everyone that race leader Alexander Kristoff wasn’t going to defend his midnight sun jersey. However, his Norwegian national team combined forces with Intermarché-Wanty Gobert to bring the breakaway back. At the 20km to go mark, Arkea-Samsic and Uno-X came in help. Laas was the first breakaway rider to surrender with 11km to go as the deficit of the peloton was down to 1’05’’. Duval was next to let Dversnes, Reynders and Azparren go. Dversnes and Azparren were the last escapees to be reeled in, precisely at the bottom of the 4-km long uphill finish. Antonio Soto (Euskaltel) launched the first attack from the bunch but Seb Berwick (Israel-Start Up-Nation) brought the peloton back to him with 2km to go.

Hermans the strongest of the leading trio
Local star in the making Andreas Leknessund (Norwegian national team) sped up before Eiking made his move 1.3km before the finishing line. Lafay reacted. Hermans came across. Best young rider Samuele Battistella (Astana) was close to joining them but had to settle for fourth as the leading trio of the 8th Arctic Race of Norway emerged. Hermans was the strongest in a tight finish with Eiking who has one more chance to take the top prize on the spectacular conclusive circuit in Harstad on Sunday. Meanwhile Hermans moved into the midnight sun jersey, Lafay took the white jersey over from Battistella.

Fabio Aru fights to a brilliant 2nd place finish overall at Vuelta a Burgos

Hugh Carthy (EF Education Nippo) won the final stage of the Vuelta a Burgos but it was Mikel Landa (Bahrain-Victorious) that won the race overall, with Fabio Aru (Team Qhubeka NextHash) taking 2nd and Mark Padun (Bahrain-Victorious) finishing 3rd.
Team Qhubeka NextHash took to the start of the final Vuelta a Burgos stage without Domenico Pozzovivo and Sander Armee, this was after both riders crashed during yesterday’s stage. Armee is expected to make a rapid recovery from his injuries but Pozzovivo suffered a fracture of the knee.
It was heart-breaking to see Pozzovivo leave the race while in such excellent form and his Vuelta a Espana challenge now lost too, before it even began, but with Fabio Aru starting the final stage in 4th overall our South African team still had a lot to race for and our 4 remaining riders delivered in a big way.
The final 146km stage finished up the 12km climb to Lagunas de Neila, well-known for its brutal gradients over the last 3km to the line. An early break did animate the first part of the race, but it was always going to be caught on the climb and the stage & GC would be decided by the strongest climbers.

Reinardt Janse van Rensburg, Bert-Jan Lindeman and Dylan Sunderland did a fine job looking after Fabio Aru right up until about the 7km to go marker for Team Qhubeka NextHash. Team Bahrain Victorious then set the pace coming into the hardest part of the climb, and this put the race leader, Romain Bardet (Team DSM) into difficulty.
Aru was riding strong in the wheels of Bahrain though, as the group quickly whittled down to just the top 20 climbers in the race. Padun was the first of the GC men to make a move, but Ineos Grenadiers gave chase with Egan Bernal and Pavel Sivakov.
Riders were aptly greeted with a „Welcome to Hell“ sign painted on the road as they began the final steep 3km stretch. From here it was very much, every man for himself. There were numerous attacks and surges in pace, but Aru rode an intelligent final climb with a top GC placing his goal. Always in the top 10 positions on the road, Aru fought all the way to the line, taking 8th place on the stage just 38 seconds after Carthy had won.
Aru’s brilliant performance ensured he climbed up to 2nd place overall, behind race winner Landa. A great result for Aru and also Team Qhubeka NextHash after a difficult last 24 hours for the team.

Fabio Aru
I am really sorry about the crashes over the last few days in our team. On the 2nd day Emil (Vinjebo) crashed and broke his collarbone, now he will miss the Vuelta. Yesterday also, Pozzo (Domenico Pozzovivo), he broke his knee, this is really terrible for us. Sander Armee also went home but we hope he can recover soon and Reinie (Janse van Rensburg) also crashed yesterday, so this has been very bad for our team.
But today we still had four guys in the race, and I have to say thank you to Bert-Jan (Lindeman), Reinie and Dylan (Sunderland). They really helped me a lot all day and to arrive in the climb in the first positions. Even though Reinie crashed yesterday he was still so strong today. So, in the end I am really happy about the result we could achieve.
When we made the decision to skip the Tour de France, and changed my calendar, I went to Lugano and Sibiu Tour and I was able to find a good feeling on the bike again. I could start attacking again, I could race the race, and I was able to fight in the race. I missed this feeling so much in the last three years and this was really hard for me.
So, these last few results, also with 2nd in GC at Vuelta a Burgos against very good riders, this gives me a very good feeling and I am so happy about it. Now I will have some easy days with the family and be ready for the next goals.

Roland Thalmann Dritter der Gesamtwertung – Team Vorarlberg weiter top bei Tour de Savoie Mont Blanc mit den Rängen zehn und elf auf dritter Etappe – Fortin siegt bei Kriterium in Wörgl!

Die Spitzengruppe des Tages mit neun Fahrern sollte den Sieg heute unter sich ausmachen. Auf der 128 Kilometer Etappe von Orelle hinauf zum Aussois siegt der Franzose Alain Boileau (B&B Hotels) vor dem Briten Stuart Balfour (Swiss Racing). Aber bereits auf Rang zehn Guerin welcher im Finale nochmals aus dem Feld attackierte. Mit ca. zehn Sekunden dahinter Roland Thalmann, welcher weiter Dritter der Gesamtwertung ist!

Morgen das grande finale mit dem geschichtsträchtigen Anstieg ins Ziel nach 124 Kilometer auf den La Toussiure auf 1691 Meter. Alexis Guerin will hier nochmals alles geben, aber es gilt vor allem das Podium von Thalmann zu sichern – das wird eine große Aufgabe für Meiler und Co!!!
