Perfectly led-out by veteran Matteo Trentin, Arvid de Kleijn (Tudor Pro Cycling Team) upset the favourites to win the 179-km second stage of Paris-Nice in Montargis on Monday. The 2023 Milan-Turin winner surged in the final stretch to narrowly beat New Zealand’s Laurence Pithie, who took the race leader’s yellow and white jersey away from Dutchman Olav Kooij, never in contention in the finale. Another Dutchman, Dylan Groenewegen (Team Jayco AlUla) was third. France’s Mathieu Burgaudeau took advantage of the two climbs of the day to take the polka-dot jersey away from Germany’s Jonas Rutsch (EF-Easypost).

Paris – Nice – 1. Etappe:

Jonas Rutsch (EF Education) sicherte sich in einer 3-köpfigen Ausreißergruppe das Bergtrikot.

Les Mureaux, Sunday, March 3rd – First Stage. Already a stage winner last year on Paris-Nice, Olav Kooij (Visma | Lease a Bike) made it two on Sunday when he surged on the line to outsprint pre-race favourite Mads Pedersen (Lidl-Trek) in Les Mureaux. The Dutchman, one of few sprinters able to stay in the front despite the bumpy terrain, made the most of the day to seize the yellow jersey ahead of a sprint stage to Montargis on Monday. In-form New Zealander Laurence Pithie was third in the 157.7-km ride which saw the GC contenders battle it out in the finale, Remco Evenepoel showing a lot of ambition in the last two hills of the day. Other stage’s laurels went to Germany’s Jonas Rutsch (EF-Easypost) who took the KOM lead thanks to the points collected on the day’s three-man break.

Danke an Roland Hofer

82nd edition of Paris-Nice 2024

Key points:
 The 82nd edition of Paris-Nice takes on an unprecedented dimension as it kicks off the racing season, with one of the highlights playing out once again just a stone’s throw from the Promenade des Anglais, with the final finish of the Tour de France. 2022 Paris-Nice winner, Primož Roglič aims to join the club of winners of the three major cycling tours this year and kicks off his campaign on the ‚Race to the Sun‘, with Remco Evenepoel his main rival. The Belgian champion will compete in his first French stage race from 3 to 10 March.

 Several contenders are in a position to join the expected duel, including David Gaudu, Carlos Rodríguez, João Almeida, Mattias Skjelmose and Matteo Jorgenson. They will all have to be on peak form for the decisive stages of the Auxerre time trial, the centre-piece stage to the Auron resort and the final stage, which is invariably indomitable, in the Nice region.
 Numerous sprinters have spotted the opportunities to be seized on the Race to the Sun, with a variety of profiles giving a chance to the likes of Mads Pedersen, Arnaud De Lie, Bryan Coquard, Dylan Groenewegen, Fabio Jakobsen, Arnaud Démare, Olav Kooij and Sam Bennett.

Primoz Roglic has already had an eventful Paris-Nice career despite only having participated twice in this leading European event. On his debut in 2021, he masterfully took command, winning three stages and rode in the leader’s jersey on the race’s final day, when he lost all his advantage in the last 25 kilometres following a crash. But the Slovenian is an honourable loser. He returned the following year and was almost as imperious to get his revenge, with the precious help of Wout van Aert as his ideal deputy. This year, the three-time Vuelta winner has chosen Paris-Nice to debut his BORA-hansgrohe jersey and kick off his conquest of the Tour de France. The reunion with the Race to the Sun will also be a reunion with one of his closest rivals on the roads of Spain since Remco Evenepoel triumphed there in 2022, mostly battling with him. The Belgian champion has set himself the same challenge as his closest rival with a view to July 2024 and, more specifically, the finish line in Nice for the Tour’s final finish. The Soudal-Quick Step leader got a head start by scheduling his first competition in Portugal, where he won the Tour of the Algarve for the third time, with a show of strength in the Albufeira time trial that certainly didn’t go unnoticed. And it may well be in Auxerre, in the time trial format that was tried out in 2023 (contested by team, timed individually), that the Olympic champion and the world champion in the speciality will pit their forces in a duel that could continue just until Nice, with surprises to be expected on Mont Brouilly (stage 4) or on the way up to the Auron resort (stage 7).

The match in question could see many other contenders, starting with David Gaudu, who was as convincing as ever during his 2023 Paris-Nice, finishing in 2nd place between Tadej Pogačar and Jonas Vingegaard. This year, the UAE team’s best chances are Joāo Almeida and Brandon McNulty, while Visma | Lease a Bike will count on its off-season recruit Matteo Jorgenson. For Ineos Grenadiers, Carlos Rodríguez, 5th in the 2023 Tour de France, has been given the task of taking over from Egan Bernal (winner of the 2019 Paris-Nice) at the age of 23, with Joshua Tarling, the peloton’s most promising rouleur, providing valuable support in the time trial. Twenty-three-year-old Danish champion Mattias Skjelmose has already proven himself at the WorldTour level by winning last year’s Tour of Switzerland (ahead of Ayuso and Evenepoel!) and will arrive in the Les Yvelines with lofty ambitions. It is the same story for Austrian Felix Gall with Decathlon-Ag2r, Ion Izagirre (3rd in 2021) with Cofidis or Pello Bilbao with Bahrain Victorious.

The stage chasers may not have the same objectives on the horizon for the finish in Nice. But they also have some proper prospects, with sprints of various types conceivable in Les Mureaux (stage 1), Montargis (stage 2), Sisteron (stage 5), and why not in La Colle-sur-Loup (stage 6). Mads Pedersen, winner of the Etoile de Bessèges and the Tour de la Provence, could add to his small collection of trophies won on French roads, especially Paris-Nice, given his impressive start to the season. Arnaud De Lie has equivalent qualities, as do Michael Matthews and Bryan Coquard. But world-class sprinters Dylan Groenewegen, Olav Kooij, Fabio Jakobsen, Arnaud Démare, Sam Bennett and Kaden Groves will also be riders to watch out for.

Deutschland Tour 2024 startet in Schweinfurt

Tour of Oman – 3. Etappe:

Naseem Garden nach Al Bustan 76km (Ersatz wegen Wetter)

Al Bustan, Monday, February, 12th 2024 – Paul Magnier and Luke Lamperti stormed the Tour of Oman as Soudal Quick-Step’s young power duo dominated the uphill finish of stage 3, in Al Bustan. The young French sprinter (19 years old) made the most of his explosive abilities to claim his second professional win already… And his young American teammate (21) came 2nd and claimed the red leader jersey from the barely older Finn Fisher-Black (UAE Team Emirates, 22). Magnier and Lamperti were teammates last year in the UCI Continental Team Trinity Racing… Their association immediately makes wonders among the professionals! The stage, initially set to head to Eastern Mountain, was adapted due to the exceptional weather conditions in the Sultanate of Oman.

STAGE 3 CLASSIFICATION
1. Paul Magnier (Soudal Quick-Step) 1h47’54’’

2. Luke Lamperti (Soudal Quick-Step) +00’’
3. Bryan Coquard (Cofidis) +00’’

GENERAL CLASSIFICATION
1. Luke Lamperti (Soudal Quick-Step) 10h15’16’’

2. Finn Fisher-Black (UAE Team Emirates) +00’’
3. Diego Ulissi (UAE Team Emirates) +08’’

Verkürzung der Etappe 4 morgen wegen Wetter:
Due to the exceptional weather conditions and to ensure the safety of the riders, the Royal Oman Police, Oman Cycling Association and all relevant Omani authorities have worked in collaboration with the commissaires panel of the Union Cycliste Internationale, the representatives of the teams and riders (A.I.G.C.P, C.P.A) and the organisation of the event (A.S.O.) have decided to shortened stage 4, Al Rustaq Fort – Yitti Hills, and to propose another shorter and safer stage: Fanja – Yitti Hills (104 kilometres).
The stage will start from Fanja at 9.30 AM GST and finish in Yitti Hills at 12:10 PM GST.

TOUR OF OMAN 2024

Key points:

 The 13th Tour of Oman, scheduled for 10 to 14 February, will serve up a five-course menu catering to all tastes, from sprinters and punchers to climbers. Its two iconic climbs —Eastern Mountain (stage 3) and Green Mountain (stage 5)— will be tough nuts to crack at this point in the season.
 Battle-hardened favourites such as Adam Yates, Emanuel Buchmann and Jesús Herrada will have to keep a close eye on stars in the making such as the whiz kid Isaac del Toro and the new French kids on the block, Antoine Huby, Paul Magnier and Alexy Faure-Prost.
 As the preamble to the Tour of Oman, the big guns will fire the opening salvo in the second edition of the Muscat Classic, on a 174.3 km course finishing on a 1.1 km with an average gradient of 10% climb that is the perfect launch pad for a puncher to launch a searing attack.

The sprinters know full well that their climber colleagues will have to wait for their day in the sun in the Tour of Oman. Alexander Kristoff, the most prolific stage hunter in the history of the race, is determined to take his tally to 10 victories, but he will have to contend with rivals such as Caleb Ewan, Fabio Jakobsen, Bryan Coquard and the precocious Paul Magnier, who let his raw speed do the talking in Spain for the first race of the season. The Norwegian will have but one shot at this goal, considering that the summit finish of stage 2 to Qurayyat, a 2.6 km ascent at an average gradient of 7%, is probably more than he can handle.
In stage 3, the finish on Eastern Mountain will take the riders over the 1,000-metre mark for the first time in the week and, perhaps, the season. The climbers will cross swords on this 4.6 km ascent at 8.5%. After this litmus test comes the up-and-down profile of stage 4, featuring the Yitti Hills, where Diego Ulissi will be coming back for seconds after his win in 2023.
However, the moment of truth will come on the slopes of Jabal al-Akhdar, or Green Mountain, where Mauri Vansevenant came a single second short of taking the win from Matteo Jorgenson last year. The Belgian is out to get his own back, but he will be facing other rivals this time round. Adam Yates constitutes the main threat in his first participation in the race, but there are a host of riders eager to use the slopes as springboards to success: Emanuel Buchmann, Isaac del Toro, Louis Meintjes, Jesús Herrada, Cristian Rodríguez and Warren Barguil have also thrown their hats into the ring.

 The route of the 76th edition of the Critérium du Dauphiné, scheduled for 2 to 9 June, was revealed this morning at the seat of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Regional Council in Lyon, in the presence of the President of the Council, Laurent Wauquiez, and Christian Prudhomme.
 For the first time ever, the field will take its first pedal strokes in the Allier department, where the town of Saint-Pourçain-sur-Sioule will roll out the red carpet for the riders. Action-packed moments such as the Wednesday time trial in Neulise (Loire) will raise the stakes throughout the week-long race, leading up to an Alpine battle royale that will come to a head on the Plateau des Glières on Sunday afternoon.
 Among the many Tour de France favourites who have already put their names down are the reigning champion, Jonas Vingegaard, and riders of the calibre of Primož Roglič and Remco Evenepoel. Jai Hindley, Aleksandr Vlasov, Mattias Skjelmose, Sepp Kuss and Tao Geoghegan Hart could also be in the mix.

11 June 2023: Jonas Vingegaard and Adam Yates on the final podium, Giulio Ciccone in polka dots and the Spanish rising star Carlos Rodríguez going from strength to strength. You can never know for sure, but the snapshot at the end of the Critérium du Dauphiné tends to be a reliable indicator of who will be the movers and shakers of the following Tour de France. In particular, the epic clashes of mountain maniacs often give a glimpse of the future, as the Alpine roads crank up the pressure one slope at a time to sort out the contenders from the pretenders at the end of the week.

The elite will be on high alert, even in the opening stage in Saint-Pourçain-sur-Sioule, where a sprinter ought to be topping the board at the end of the day. It will not last for long, though. Just 24 hours later, riders on top of their game will get their first chance to deal some (serious) damage to their rivals in the gruelling 25 km sequence leading up to the Col de la Loge. After that, the leg-breaking stage to Les Estables, on the rugged terrain of the Puy-de-Dôme and Haute-Loire departments, is the ideal scenario for a strong breakaway to shake up the pecking order. Power riders will be salivating at the prospect of the 34.4 km time trial around Neulise, which has the potential to open even wider gaps.

Stage 5 has „sprint finish“ written all over it, with a 1 km home straight in Saint-Priest, in the suburbs of Lyon. However, from then on, the road will bend towards the sky in an Alpine trilogy that will set out from Hauterives, in front of the Palais Idéal du Facteur Cheval, which has hosted the launch of large-scale projects more than once. Act 1 will pit the field against the Col du Granier and, after that, the Collet d’Alevard, following an 11.1 km slog at an average gradient of 8.1%. Act 2 packs an even bigger punch, with an altitude gain of 4,268 metres over a distance of 145.5 km. The traditional Col des Saisies, Col des Aravis and Col de la Colombière will soften up the peloton before the eye-popping Côte d’Arâches and the premiere of Samoëns 1600. The man in the lead at the Haute-Savoie resort will be in a solid position going into the finale, but Act 3 will be rife with opportunities for others to usurp the crown at the eleventh hour. If the field is feeling riotous at the start in Thônes, a dangerous move can emerge on the Col de la Forclaz de Montmin, consolidate on the climb to Mont Salève in the second part of the stage and put the leader between a rock and a hard place on the Plateau des Glières. It was on this side of the ascent that Julian Alaphilippe rocketed to the win in the final stage of the 2013 Tour de l’Avenir.

Alula Tour Etappe 1

Al Manshiya Train Station – Al Manshiya Train Station – 149Km
A bunched sprint was expect at the end of stage 1 and that’s exactly what happened on the opening day of the AlUla Tour. In a hectic final straight with a lot of candidates to victory, Casper Van Uden (Team DSM-Firmenich PostNL) proved to be the fastest. The young Dutchman only just captures his first major success by beating compatriot Dylan Groenewegen (Team Jayco AlUla) and Belgium’s Tim Merlier (Soudal Quickstep). Thanks to his victory, Van Uden takes command of the general classification and will be wearing the green jersey for tomorrow’s stage 2.
