Danny van Poppel nimmt neue Herausforderung an: Zweiter Rang auf 11. Etappe der Vuelta a España

Nach mehreren Tagen ohne Gelegenheit für die schnellen Männer, konnten sich die Sprinter auf der 191,2 km langen und leicht welligen Strecke zwischen Alhama de Murcia und dem Ziel im Nationalpark Cabo de Gata Hoffnungen auf einen Tagessieg machen. BORA – hansgrohe ging ohne ihren Sprintkapitän Sam Bennett, der das Rennen gestern wegen eines positiven Coronatests vorzeitig verlassen musste, an den Start. Für das Team bedeutete dies ein kurzfristiges Umdenken und die Equipe setzte heute auf Danny van Poppel im Sprintfinale. Auf der Zielgeraden in Cabo de Gata klemmte sich der Niederländer ans Hinterrad von K. Groves und versuchte den Australier auf den letzten Metern zu überholen, zögerte aber ein bisschen zu lang und überquerte die Ziellinie letztendlich als Zweiter.

„Das Team hat mir für den Sprint das Vertrauen geschenkt und die Jungs haben mich heute sehr gut unterstützt. Auf der Zielgeraden klebte ich die ganze Zeit am Rad von Groves und war aus dem Wind. Ich war in einer ziemlich guten Position, doch dann kamen Fahrer von rechts und der Sprint wurde früh lanciert. Ich folgte dem Rad von Groves, trotzdem habe ich den Bruchteil von einer Sekunde gezögert, und ich glaube, das hat mir den Sieg gekostet. Hätte ich nicht gezögert, hätte ich wohl gewinnen können. Aber mein zweiter Platz gibt uns Selbstvertrauen für die nächsten Sprints. Ich bin mit meiner Leistung zufrieden und freue mich auf den nächsten Sprint, der ein bisschen bergauf geht. Ich denke, das wird mir besser liegen.“ – Danny van Poppel

„Es war im Großen und Ganzen ein guter Tag. Wir waren eigentlich auf das Schlimmste vorbereitet, denn die Wettervorhersage hatte viel Wind prognostiziert. Am Start war es auch windig, aber am Ende war es besser. Nichtsdestotrotz war es wichtig, heute vorne zu sein und sich aus eventuellen Stürzen raus zuhalten. Nach dem gestrigen Ausstieg von Sam Bennett haben wir sozusagen heute versucht zurückzukämpfen. Das war für die Moral nämlich sehr wichtig und das konnten wir am leichtesten mit einem Etappensieg erreichen. Danny ist knapp an einem Sieg vorbeigeschrammt. Das können wir nicht ändern, aber es war trotzdem ein solides Ergebnis für ihn und ich glaube, der Etappensieg wird noch kommen.“ – Bernhard Eisel, Sportlicher Leiter

A Grand Groves

Kaden Groves (BikeExchange-Jayco) took his first Grand Tour stage win on day 11 of La Vuelta, a fast and furious sprint on the Mediterranean coast. A few hours after his GC leader Simon Yates had to leave the race, the young Australian sprinter got the best of Danny van Poppel (Bora-Hansgrohe) and Tim Merlier (Alpecin-Deceuninck) to take his biggest victory in Cabo de Gata. Remco Evenepoel (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl) retained La Roja but he lost a precious teammate as the world champion Julian Alaphilippe crashed out of the race.
On the day after an explosive ITT in Alicante, the peloton of La Vuelta 22 face a mostly flat 191.2km stage from ElPozo Alimentacion (Alhama de Murcia) to Cabo de Gata, with long stretches along the coast and a 3.5km final straight entirely exposed. Simon Yates (BikeExchange-Jayco) and Pavel Sivakov (Ineos Grenadiers) are among the five riders forced to withdraw due to Covid-19.

The sprinters control the day
Three baroudeurs attack from the start: Jetse Bol (Burgos-BH), Vojtech Repa (Kern Pharma) and Joan Bou (Euskaltel-Euskadi). After 10km of racing, their lead on the bunch is up to 4 minutes.
Tim Merlier’s Alpecin-Deceuninck are the first to react. They are quickly joined by Dan McLay’s Arkea-Samsic, Mads Pedersen’s Trek-Segafredo. Kaden Groves’ BikeExchange-Jayco also pull the bunch to control the day.

Groves speeds up
The peloton ride through the stage safely until Julian Alaphilippe (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl) hits the deck with 64km to go. The world champion quickly indicates he suffers from his right shoulder. He is evacuated in an ambulance.
At the front, Jetse Bol drops his breakaway companions with 52km to go. Joan Bou and Vojtech Repa are quickly caught by the bunch, also pulled by Bora-Hansgrohe. Bol is eventually reeled in with 26km to go.
The peloton control the race until the final sprint. BikeExchange-Jayco launch Kaden Groves and the 23 year old Australian shows the speed he has built on the track to take victory ahead of Danny van Poppel and Tim Merlier.

Unglücklicher Tag für BORA – hansgrohe bei der Vuelta: Jai Hindley fällt im Gesamtklassement zurück und Sam Bennett muss aussteigen

Nach dem Transfer an die Mittelmeerküste und dem zweiten Ruhetag ging es heute weiter mit einem 31,1 km langen Einzelzeitfahren zwischen Elche und Alicante. Der flache Kurs mit keinen besonderen Schwierigkeiten kam den Fahrern mit viel Power zu Gute und für die Klassementfahrer galt es Zeitverluste in Grenzen zu halten. Leider verlor BORA – hansgrohe Sam Bennett, der nach einem positive Antigen-Schnelltest auf Covid-19 die Vuelta nach Rücksprache mit dem Team leider verlassen musste. Wilco Kelderman war heute bester Fahrer des Rennstalls aus Raubling mit einer Zeit von 37:43 Minuten, zwei Sekunden schneller als sein Teamkollege Jai Hindley. Der bis dato Gesamtneunte Australier fiel damit auf den 13. Platz in der Gesamtwertung zurück.

„Wir wussten, dass das Einzelzeitfahren nicht einfach werden würde, vor allem weil es eine ziemlich flache Strecke war. Am Ende hat Jai ein paar Positionen in der Gesamtwertung verloren. Vielleicht hatten wir heute ein bisschen mehr von ihm erwartet. Trotzdem hat er im ersten Teil der Strecke eine gute Leistung gezeigt und dann im zweiten Teil etwas Zeit verloren. Wir werden aber weiterkämpfen, denn wir haben noch einige Bergetappen vor uns und werden trotz des heutigen Rückschlags nicht aufgeben.“ – Sylwester Szmyd, Trainer

Evenepoel in his own world

Remco Evenepoel (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl) took the stage win he was looking for in La Vuelta 22 with an impressive performance in the individual time trial of Alicante, on Tuesday. At 55.7km/h, the Belgian star dominated everyone, including Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma), 2nd on the day with a gap of 48’’ after 30.9km. Evenepoel is the first rider to beat Roglic in an ITT of La Vuelta. He increases his lead at the top of the GC standings, 2’40’’ ahead of Roglic and 3’03’’ ahead of Enric Mas (Movistar). He is also the first Belgian rider to win an ITT stage of La Vuelta since Fons De Wolf in Valladolid in 1979. Jean-Luc Vandenbroucke won the prologue in Benidorm in 1987.
La Vuelta 22 returns to action with 30.9km individual time trial from Elche to Alicante. A handful of riders don’t resume racing due to illness, including Sam Bennett (Bora-Hansgrohe), winner of stages 2 and 3 in the Netherlands, who returned a positive test to Covid-19 and “also showed some symptoms” according to his team.

Cavagna impresses but…
Among the early starters, Rémi Cavagna (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl) maintains an average speed of 54.1km/h to set the best time ahead of two BikeExchange-Jayco riders, Michael Hepburn (+52’’) and Luke Durbridge (+1’21’’).
Fred Wright (Bahrain Victorious, +53’’) and Rohan Dennis (Jumbo-Visma, +1’21’’) are both beaten by the Frenchman. But Cavagna makes it clear at the finish: “Remco [Evenepoel] will beat me, that’s for sure.”
Lawson Craddock (BikeExchange-Jayco) squeezes in 2nd position (+37’’) before the GC battle begins.

Evenepoel flies
The likes of Pavel Sivakov (Ineos Grenadiers) and Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) quickly show their strong legs, less than a second away from Cavagna at the first intermediate point. On the contrary, Carlos Rodriguez (Ineos Grenadiers) gradually improves his position. But Remco Evenepoel (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl) quickly shows he’s the best out there.
At the first intermediate point, the young Belgian star already leads by 20’’. By the second split, the gap is up to 36’’. And on the line, he gets the best of Roglic by no less than 48’’ and Cavagna by 1’00’’. Another masterclass from Evenepoel sees him lead the GC standings with a 2’40’’ gap to the Slovenian 3-time winner of La Vuelta, halfway through the 2022 edition.

Nach schwerer Bergankunft auf neunter Etappe der Vuelta liegt Jai Hindley weiterhin in den Top-Ten der Gesamtwertung

Zum Schluss der ersten Woche der Vuelta wurden die Fahrer heute noch einmal ordentlich gefordert. Die letzte Etappe vor dem zweiten Ruhetag wies vier Bergwertungen auf und endete mit dem steilen Schlussanstieg nach Les Praeres. Die stark besetzte Ausreißergruppe des Tages, die sich nach rund 45 km bildete, konnte am Ende auch um den Sieg kämpfen, den sich L. Meintjes nach 171 km im Sattel holte. Dahinter kam es wie erwartet zum Schlagabtausch der Klassementfahrer, wobei im letzten Teil des Anstiegs die Favoritengruppe auseinanderbrach. Jai Hindley, Wilco Kelderman und Sergio Higuita versuchten den Angriffen zu folgen, mussten aber im entscheidenden Streckenteil abreißen lassen. Obwohl der Australier damit Zeit gegenüber dem Gesamtführenden verlor, liegt er weiter unverändert auf dem 9. Rang im Gesamtklassement. Sam Bennett belegt weiterhin den 2. Platz im Kampf um das Grüne Trikot, mit fünf Punkten Rückstand zu M. Pedersen, dem aktuell Führenden in der Punktewertung.

„Nach neun Etappen fällt unser Fazit vor dem Ruhetag recht positiv aus. Wir haben zwei Etappensiege, hatten sechs Tage lang das Grüne Trikot und liegen immer noch mit Jai Hindley in guter Position in der Gesamtwertung. Obwohl die Etappe heute vielleicht nicht so gut für uns ausging, gehen wir positiv in den mittleren und sehr schweren Teil der Vuelta nach dem verdienten Ruhetag morgen.“ – Jens Zemke, Sportlicher Leiter

Meintjes and Evenepoel tame Les Praeres

Remco Evenepoel (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl) dropped all his rivals on the brutal slopes of Les Praeres at the end of stage 9 of La Vuelta 22, won by Louis Meintjes (Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert). The pocket climber joined the breakaway after a fierce battle to become the second South-African stage winner in the history of the Spanish Grand Tour, two decades after Robbie Hunter (2 victories in 1999 and 2001). But the strongest on the day was, again, the young Belgian star, who powered away 3km away from the summit of the infamous ascent to extend his GC lead ahead of tomorrow’s rest day and Tuesday’s time trial. Enric Mas (Movistar) is still 2nd of the GC standings, with a gap of 1’12’’, and Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) trails by 1’53’’.
The last stage of La Vuelta 22 ahead of the rest day is a gruelling one, with 3,700m of elevation and a brutal finish on the slopes of Les Praeres (3.9km at 12.9%, maximum gradient: 24%). 166 riders start from Villaviciosa after the withdrawals of Sepp Kuss (Jumbo-Visma), Wout Poels (Bahrain Victorious) and Pieter Serry (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl).

9 riders on the move
Baroudeurs are inspired again, so much that it takes 44km of battles for the nine attackers of the day to launch the breakaway: Samuele Battistella (Astana Qazaqstan), Edoardo Zambanini (Bahrain Victorious), Dylan van Baarle (Ineos Grenadiers), Louis Meintjes (Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert), Filippo Conca (Lotto Soudal), Jimmy Janssens, Robert Stannard (Alpecin Deceuninck), José Manuel Diaz Gallego (Burgos-BH) and Simon Guglielmi (Arkea Samsic).
Thymen Arensman (Team DSM) was also up there but the Dutch youngster, 11th in the overall standings, drops back to the bunch on the first ascent of the day, the cat-2 Alto del Torno (summit at km 55.6).
Stannard goes first over the top ahead of Janssens to defend Jay Vine’s polka-dot jersey. The Australian climber, already a winner of two stages, also attacks on the ascent but the situation settles under Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl’s control.

Meintjes and Evenepoel are out of reach
Remco Evenepoel’s teammates keep the gap at around 5’ over the following ascents, the cat-1 Alto del Mirador del Fito (km 93) and the cat-3 Alto de la Llama (km 118.1). Atop the penultimate climb of the day, the cat-3 La Campa (km 148.6), the gap is still up to 4’12’’.
The riders at the front start attacking each other with 12km to go. Janssens and Battistella have a small lead as they hit the first slopes up Les Praeres. But they can’t hold off Meintjes when the South African rider catches them and drops them with 2.5km to go.
In the GC group, Juan Ayuso (UAE Team Emirates) is the first rider to strike, early on the ascent. But Remco Evenepoel ups the ante with 3km to go and opens significant gaps (34’’ to Ayuso, 44’’ to Mas, 46’’ to Rodriguez, 52’’ to Roglic…) to tighten his grip on La Roja ahead of Tuesday’s time-trial in Alicante.

8. Etappe der Vuelta: Bergankunft fordert Tribut von BORA-hansgrohe GC und Sam Bennett verliert Grün

Auf der ersten von zwei anspruchsvollen Etappen vor dem Ruhetag ging es heute über 153 Kilometer, und sechs kategorisierte Anstiege im nordspanischen Küstengebirge. Im brutalen Schlussanstieg hinauf zum Colláu Fancuaya entbrannte der Kampf zwischen den Klassementfahrern. Unter der Führung von Ineos Grenadiers und später Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl reduzierte sich die Lücke zur Ausreißergruppe auf ungefähr 2:30 Minuten, aber das Tempo war für mehrere der Favoriten zu hoch und am Ende konnten nur Evenepoel, Roglič, Mas, Yates und Rodriguez mithalten. Jai Hindley befand sich in der Gruppe des weißen Trikots ungefähr 30 Sekunden dahinter, mit Sergio Higuita weitere 20 Sekunden hinter ihm und Wilco Kelderman ungefähr 2:30 Minuten zurück. Beim Sieg von J. Vine aus der Ausreißergruppe, erreichte Jai die Ziellinie auf dem 16. Rang, gefolgt von Sergio auf dem 19. und Wilco 37. Rang. Im Kampf um das grüne Trikot sammelte M. Pedersen in der Ausreißergruppe maximale Punkte beim Zwischensprint und damit verlor Sam Bennett seine Führung in der Punktewertung und liegt jetzt fünf Punkte hinter dem Dänen.

„Es war ein harter Tag, von Anfang an. Aber das Team, vor allem unsere schnellen Männer, haben einen großartigen Job gemacht, um nach dem Start zurückzukommen und uns GC-Fahrer gut zu positionieren. Leider haben wir alle ein bisschen Zeit verloren, aber das Rennen ist noch lange nicht vorbei. Vine and Evenepoel, again!

Jay Vine (Alpecin-Deceuninck) and Remco Evenepoel (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl) provided more impressive climbing performances on the slopes up Collau Fancuaya, a gruelling ascent with slopes up to 19% at the end of stage 8 of La Vuelta 22. The Australian rising star dropped all his breakaway companions, including the likes of Marc Soler (UAE Team Emirates) and Thibaut Pinot (Groupama-FDJ), to take his second win in three days of racing. Through the fog, Remco Evenepoel (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl) set a brutal pace only Enric Mas (Movistar) and Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) could follow. The Belgian retains La Roja on the eve of another showdown on the mountains of Asturias.
The first mountainous weekend of La Vuelta 22 is ahead of the riders and it begins with an unprecedented summit finish up Collau Fancuaya. With six categorised ascents packed in 153.4km, they will have to overcome over 3,500m of elevation. 171 riders start after the withdrawals of Nikias Arndt, Mark Donovan (Team DSM), Jake Stewart (Groupama-FDJ) and Anthony Delaplace (Arkéa-Samsic).

Landa, Vine, Soler, Pinot… An impressive break
Alexey Lutsenko (Astana-Qazaqstan) is the first attacker of the day. His move unleashes a flurry of attacks as the riders quickly hit the first slopes up the cat-2 Alto de La Colladona (summit at km 9.8). Richard Carapaz (Ineos Grenadiers) and Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) are among the many riders on the early move, already forcing Remco Evenepoel’s Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl to chase hard.
At the summit, Jay Vine (Alpecin-Deceuninck) takes the 5 points to lead the KOM standings. Marc Soler (UAE Team Emirates) closely follows him. The winners of stages 5 and 6 work together on the valley and are joined at km 23 by six more attackers: Alexey Lutsenko (Astana-Qazaqstan), Mikel Landa (Bahrain Victorious), Bruno Armirail (Groupama-FDJ), Rein Taaramäe (Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert), Lucas Hamilton (BikeExchange-Jayco) and Mads Pedersen (Trek-Segafredo).
Bruno Armirail then drops down to help Thibaut Pinot and Sébastien Reichenbach (Groupama-FDJ) make a very strong breakaway after 40km of battles. Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl still drive the bunch at an easier pace.

The polka dots for Vine and the green jersey for Pedersen
Jay Vine keeps racking the KOM points up the cat-2 Alto de La Mozqueta (km 48.8), cat-3 Alto de Santo Emiliano (km 66.5) and cat-3 Puerto de Tenebreo (km 98.1). The gap is stable around 4 minutes. Victor Langellotti (Burgos-BH), who started the stage with the polka-dot jersey, abandons after a crash.
Over the penultimate climb of the day, Peralvia (cat-3, km 113.8), Vine has all but secured the polka dots. Pedersen makes the most of the intermediate sprint (km 127.4) to chase the green jersey with a total of 147 points, 5 more than Sam Bennett (Bora-Hansgrohe) had at the start of the stage.

Vine and Evenepoel are unleashed
Pedersen and Armirail are dropped from the breakaway ahead of the final ascent up Collau Fancuaya (10km at 8.5%, max gradient: 19%). Movistar and Ineos Grenadiers move to the front of the bunch. The gap is down to 3’15’’ at the bottom.
Jay Vine goes solo with 6km to go. Marc Soler, Rein Taaramäe and Thibaut Pinot are his fiercest chasers but they all come short while Remco Evenepoel sets off inside the last 3km of ascent. Enric Mas (Movistar) is able to follow him, like he did up Pico Jano.
This time, Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) is also up there but the rest of the GC contenders are dealt a new blow by the young Belgian star who crosses the line 1’20’’ after Vine did. He strengthens his position at the top of the standings ahead of another showdown towards Les Praeres.

Ausreißer siegt auf 7. Etappe der Vuelta, während Sam Bennett den Sprint des Pelotons gewinnt und Grün verteidigt

Auf den 190 km zwischen Camargo und Cistierna stellte sich ein schwerer Anstieg der 1. Kategorie nach rund 100 km in den Weg, ehe es nach einer Abfahrt die letzten 50 km leicht abfallend in Richtung Zielort ging. Auf diesem Terrain waren mehrere Szenarien möglich, denn sowohl bergfeste Sprinter, als auch eine Ausreißergruppe oder sogar die Kletterer hatten eine Chance. Im Anstieg zum Puerto de San Glorio setzte Trek-Segafredo ein hohes Tempo, um die reinen Sprinter abzuhängen. Obwohl Sam Bennett am Gipfel 30 Sekunden hinter dem Feld lag, gelang es ihm dank seiner Teamkollegen in der Abfahrt die Lücke wieder zu schließen. Mittlerweile hatte eine Ausreißergruppe einen Vorsprung von rund 2:30 Minuten und trotz der Führungsarbeit von BORA-hansgrohe sowie Trek-Segafredo waren die fünf Ausreißer nicht mehr einzuholen. 29 Sekunden hinter dem Tagessieger J. Herrada erreichte das Feld die Ziellinie in Cistierna, wo Sam den Sprint des Feldes für sich entschied und damit seine Führung in der Punktewertung verteidigte.

„Natürlich bin ich ein bisschen enttäuscht, dass ich nicht um den Etappensieg kämpfen konnte, aber die Ausreißer waren einfach zu stark heute. Ehrlich gesagt wussten wir nicht, ob ich den Anstieg überstehen würde, aber dank der großartigen Unterstützung meiner Teamkollegen konnte ich wieder zum Peloton aufschließen. Ich bin ihnen für ihre tolle Unterstützung unglaublich dankbar und freue mich sehr, dass wir das Grüne Trikot verteidigen konnten. – Sam Bennett

„Das war ein richtig langer und schwieriger Tag für die Jungs. Wir haben gesagt, was die Punktewertung betrifft, werden wir erst am Berg sehen, wie es Sam geht. Das ganze Team ist da unglaublich gefahren. Nach dem Berg sind wir dann nicht gleich losgefahren, weil wir auch mal schauen mussten, dass BikeExchange und Arkéa zurückkommen. Dann haben wir gesehen, wie stark die Gruppe vorne noch war, vor allem auch im Hinblick auf den Zwischensprint, da war nichts mehr zu machen. Sam gewann dann den Sprint vom Peloton und hat jetzt 15 Punkte Vorsprung in der Punktewertung, was kein großes Polster ist. Wir werden jetzt vermutlich das Trikot in den Ruhetag bringen, und dann werden wir weitersehen. Es liegen ja immer noch zwei Wochen vor uns und vor allem jetzt kommen zwei schwere Tage in den Bergen hier im Norden von Spanien. Herrada outplays the peloton

Jesus Herrada (Cofidis) couldn’t hold up his tears after giving everything he had to win stage 7 of La Vuelta 22. The Spanish baroudeur narrowly edged Samuele Battistella (Astana Qazaqstan) and Fred Wright (Bahrain Victorious) in Cistierna after a 190km stage covered at a brutal pace to hold off the bunch. He takes his 2nd stage win in the Spanish Grand Tour, 3 years after the previous one. Sprinters teams, and especially Mads Pedersen’s Trek-Segafredo, tried to control the day ahead of two gruelling stages in the Asturias. But the peloton eventually came up short as Sam Bennett (Bora-Hansgrohe) crossed the line with a gap of 29’’ to the stage winner. Remco Evenepoel (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl) is only the 2nd Belgian rider to retain the overall leadership for more than a day in La Vuelta in the last 40 years, after Philippe Gilbert in 2010.
On the day after Jay Vine and Remco Eneveopel’s shows of strength, and ahead of two gruelling stages in the Asturias, La Vuelta 22 heads west with a 190km route from Camargo to Cistierna that could favour sprinters or attackers. 176 riders start after AG2R Citroen’s Andrea Vendrame and Jaakko Hanninen returned positive tests to Covid-19.

Trek-Segafredo and BikeExchange-Jayco control the gap
After a few skirmishes, six attackers quickly manage to open a gap: Samuele Battistella (Astana Qazaqstan), Fred Wright (Bahrain Victorious), Jesus Herrada (Cofidis), Omer Goldstein (Israel Premier Tech), Harry Sweeny (Lotto Soudal) and Jimmy Janssens (Alpecin-Deceuninck).

But the peloton, and especially Euskaltel-Euskadi, are not willing to let them go. The battle is ongoing until the gap eventually increases to 1’ just ahead of km 30. BikeExchange-Jayco and Trek-Segafredo move to the front of the bunch in order to control the gap.

Sprinters struggle on the ascent
The attackers push their lead up to 4’20’’ after 60km of racing. The gap is down to 3’30’’ at the bottom of the main climb of the day, the 22.4km Puerto de San Glorio (summit at km 125.8).
Trek-Segafredo up the ante on the ascent with the likes of Kenny Elissonde and Juanpe Lopez setting the pace. Tim Merlier (Alpecin-Deceuninck) is dropped 16km away from the summit. Pascal Ackermann (UAE Team Emirates) suffers the same fate a few kilometres later and Sam Bennett (Bora-Hansgrohe) is also dropped inside the last 2km of ascent.
At the front, Omer Goldstein can’t keep up with his breakaway companions. The gap is down to 2’35’’ at the summit.

The attackers resist
With the help of two teammates, Sam Bennett returns to the bunch after a 15km chase. Arkea-Samsic and BikeExchange set the pace as the race enters the last 40km. The attackers hold on to a lead of 2’05’’ into the last 30km. And the gap doesn’t change much until Trek-Segafredo and Bora-Hansgrohe start pulling inside the last 25km.
Samuele Battistella, Fred Wright, Jesus Herrada, Harry Sweeny and Jimmy Janssens still have a lead of 58’’ under the 10km banner. And 50’’ with 5km to go.
They eventually get to battle it out for the stage win in Cistierna. Wright opens up the sprint but Herrada powers to his 2nd stage win in La Vuelta, three years after Ares del Maestrat. Half a minute later, Bennett is the fastest rider from the bunch.

Starker vierter Rang für Danny Van Poppel beim ersten Massensprint der Tour de France

Wie erwartet endete die zweite Tour-Etappe heute in einem Massensprint. Da die meiste Zeit der Wind von vorne kam, war das Rennen zu Beginn weniger hektisch als erwartet, obwohl dennoch eine gewisse Anspannung im Feld zu spüren war. Nachdem auch der letzte Fahrer einer frühen Ausreißergruppe gestellt war, entbrannte das Rennen so richtig bei der Einfahrt zur Great Belt Bridge. Dort ereignete sich ein erster Massensturz, in dem auch das Gelbe Trikot zu Boden ging. Das Rennen lief zwar wieder zusammen, allerdings brachte ein zweiter Sturz rund 1,5 Kilometer vor dem Ziel wieder einige Fahrer zu Fall. BORA – hansgrohe war den ganzen Tag über in guter Position im Feld zu sehen und man konnte heute auch alle Stürze vermeiden. Am Ende war Danny Van Poppel noch am Sprint beteiligt und landete letztlich auf dem vierten Rang. F. Jakobsen holte den Etappensieg, während das Gelbe Trikot auf die Schultern von W. Van Aert wechselte.

Von der Ziellinie
“Ich denke, es ist ein Talent von mir, auch ohne echten Lead-out ein Hinterrad im Sprint zu finden. Nach der Brücke war das Rennen extrem schnell und Groenewegen hatte vor mir Probleme. Ich hatte die Kraft an ihm vorbeizugehen und wollte eigentlich früh antreten, doch es war zu viel Gegenwind. Ich bin dann auch im Sprint an einem Hinterrad mitgegangen und mit dem vierten Rang bin ich sehr zufrieden.” – Danny Van Poppel

“Es war schon ganz anders heute, als ich es erwartet hatte. Ich dachte es wären sicher viele Fans am Start und im Ziel, aber sie waren überall entlang der Strecke, 200 km lang. Ich war auch darauf vorbereitet, dass es hektisch sein würde, und das war es auch. Aber das Team hat einen guten Job gemacht und wir waren immer in guter Position und konnte alle Probleme vermeiden. Am Ende war es ein Tag, an dem ich Kraft sparen konnte.“ – Aleksandre Vlasov

“Eigentlich lief das Rennen genau wie wir erwartet hatten. Durch den Gegenwind war es weniger stressig zu Beginn, allerdings hatten dadurch am Ende auch noch viele Fahrer ein paar Körner übrig und das Final war dann umso gefährlicher. Für uns war es ein guter Tag. Wir waren immer vorne und konnten auch die Stürze vermeiden. Dass Danny am Ende noch Vierter wird, ist ein schönes Plus und gut für die Moral.” – Rolf Aldag, sportlicher Leiter

First timers Fabio Jakobsen and Wout van Aert

On his first participation to the Tour de France, Fabio Jakobsen claimed the 50th stage victory of Quick Step-Alpha Vinyl since 2001. Second on the line in the bunch gallop following the big show on the Great Belt bridge, Wout van Aert took the yellow jersey for the first time in his career.

FOUR RIDERS IN THE LEAD
176 took the start of stage 2 in Roskilde at 12.39. Denmark’s Magnus Cort (EF Education-Easypost) was the first attacker of the day. Sven Erik Bystrom (Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert Matériaux), Cyril Barthe and Pierre Rolland (B&B Hotels-KTM) joined him at the front with the consent of the peloton. Their maximum advantage as a quartet was recorded at km12: 2’15’’, before Danish riders from sprinters’ teams seized the reins of the peloton: Mikkel Honoré for Quick Step-Alpha Vinyl, Chris Juul-Jensen for Team BikeExchange-Jayco and Andreas Kron for Lotto-Soudal.

Rolland tried to anticipate the sprint for the first KOM of the Tour located at km 62 but the Frenchman didn’t manage to go clear and Cort logically won the sprint against Bystrom at Asnaes Indelukke (km 62). Up the hill, the two riders from B&B Hotels-KTM lost contact with the two Scandinavians. Once Cort and Bystrom became a leading duo, the gap to the peloton increased to three minutes whereas Rolland and Barthe failed to come across. Cort fought hard to beat Bystrom again at Hove Straede (km 72.5). It was much easier at Karup Strandbakke (km 84), so the Dane raised his hands up in the air as if he had won a stage. All three KOM were classified in fourth category so the EF Education-EasyPost rider totalled three points to take the polka dot jersey ten years after his compatriot Michael Morkov.

LAMPAERT CRASHES, COMES BACK BUT LOSES THE LEAD TO VAN AERT
At half way into stage 2, after Rolland and Barthe were brought back at km 96, the peloton was timed 3’ behind Cort and Bystrom. 60km before the end, Bystrom sped up to remain alone at the front with 1’ lead while the peloton swallowed Cort. The Norwegian was eventually brought back with 31km remaining and was voted most aggressive rider of the day. Wearing the Maillot Jaune, Yves Lampaert crashed on the Great Belt Bridge but made it back in the pack 16km before the end. It took a bit longer to Rigoberto Uran but everyone was together at the 3km to go mark. Quick Step-Alpha Vinyl led the run in but many other teams were involved in the sprint. Jakobsen proved to be the fastest as he pipped van Aert on the line but coming second was enough for the Belgian to take the Maillot Jaune for the first time ever.

Then I was next to Peter Sagan. We touched each other but luckily we stayed up right and I could pass the other two rivals. I’m happy to win. My legs were in pain, but this is what we train for. For 15 years I’ve been dreaming of this and I want to say a big thanks to Denmark for the warm welcome and the encouragements.”

BORA – hansgrohe bleibt in Schlagdistanz nach verregnetem Auftaktzeitfahren der Tour de France

Zum Auftakt der Tour de France 2022 in Kopenhagen musste heute ein etwa 13 Kilometer langes Einzelzeitfahren absolviert werden. Durch regennasse Straßen war der Kurs technisch sehr herausfordernd und für BORA – hansgrohe ging es vor allem darum, heute ohne Sturz durchzukommen. Aleksandre Vlasov war einer der ersten Starter und beendete das Rennen in einer Zeit von 15:49 am Ende auf Rang 21, rund 30 Sekunden hinter dem Etappensieger Y. Lampaert. Lennard Kämna war BORA – hansgrohe’s bestplatzierter Fahrer in 15:43 auf Rang 19.

“Ich bin zu Beginn wirklich sehr vorsichtig gefahren. Nach ein paar Kilometern habe ich mich etwas sicherer gefühlt. Auf den Geraden konnte ich ganz gut drücken, die Beine waren gut, aber nicht perfekt. Belgian farmer Yves Lampaert created a huge surprise to be crowned in Copenhagen instead of his star compatriot Wout van Aert who had won his duel against Filippo Ganna before it stopped raining in the Danish capital. He’s the first Belgian to take the Maillot Jaune since Greg Van Avermaet in 2018 and the fourth from his cycling mad country to win the inaugural time trial of the Tour de France after Eddy Merckx, victor of three prologues (in 1970, 1972 and 1974), Freddy Maertens (1976) and Eric Vanderaerden (1983).

VAN DER POEL EARLY ON THE HOT SEAT
Stefan Bissegger, the first stage favourite in action, crashed twice, so he didn’t better the time of Dutch national champion for ITT Bauke Mollema who clocked 15’34’18“, which made an average speed of 50.878km/h. His time was bettered by 3’’56 by his compatriot Mathieu van der Poel (av.: 51.097km/h). First of the GC favourites to take the start, Primoz Roglic rode under the rain and didn’t make the hot seat as he was 2’’55 slower than MVDP. Stefan Küng and Geraint Thomas were seemingly hampered by the pouring rain as they didn’t approach the performance the leader of Alpecin-Deceuninck. Wout van Aert (1’’18), Filippo Ganna (2’’53) and Tadej Pogacar (6’’47) were also behind van der Poel at the half way point.

IT SEEMED DONE FOR WOUT VAN AERT
The three top guns increased their speed in the second half of the race to set a new provisional top 3: van Aert in the lead (av. speed: 51.540km/h), Pogacar in second place two seconds behind and Ganna third at five seconds, leaving van der Poel in fourth. It made a difference of nine seconds between Pogacar and Roglic, the two hot favourites for the overall victory, which was possibly the difference between the drizzle and the pouring rain that the two Slovenians experienced respectively. As the biggest names had completed the course, it seemed like a third stage victory in a row for van Aert after the Libourne to Saint-Emilion time trial and the Champs-Elysées bunch sprint last year, but the rained stopped and the road dried up slowly. His French team-mate Christophe Laporte set the best intermediate time but crashed later on.

YVES LAMPAERT SURPRISES EVERYONE
A double Belgian champion for individual time trial (2017, 2021) and recent winner of the ITT at the Belgium Tour before his disqualification for dangerous behaviour in the last stage, Yves Lampaert took advantage of the new racing conditions to oust his compatriot from the hot seat as he clocked in 15’17’’76, five seconds faster than van Aert, at the average speed of 51.821km/h. The teams had chosen to get their star riders going early as they believed the weather conditions would worsen, but it went the other way round. However, none of the 71 riders who competed after Lampaert proved to be a threat for the stage victory. Another Belgian, Dylan Teuns, was the only one to enter the top 10 (10th).

Nach dem letzten Tag in Ungarn ist BORA – hansgrohe bereit für die nächsten Giro-Etappen in Sizilien

Die letzte Etappe in Ungarn führte über 201 km von Kaposvár nach Balatonfüred. Eine fast komplett flache Etappe, die am Plattensee endete, wartete auf das Peloton, und wie erwartet kam es am Ende zu einem Massensprint. Für BORA – hansgrohe war es heute wichtig vor dem morgigen Reisetag ohne Schwierigkeiten und Zeitverluste ins Ziel zu kommen. Im Sprintfinale holte Cavendish den Sieg, während BORA – hansgrohe sich aus dem Massensprint heraushielt und die Fahrer des Raublinger Rennstalls gemeinsam die Ziellinie überquerten.

„Unser Ziel war heute einfach sicher von A nach B zu kommen und das hat einwandfrei geklappt. Es war klar, dass es heute zu einem Sprint kommen würde und für uns war da nichts zu holen. Das schöne war, dass wieder unglaublich viele Leute an der Strecke waren. Da können wir uns generell bei all den Ungarn bedanken, die in den letzten Tag mit uns Radsport gefeiert haben. It’s Liège at first sight for Evenepoel

Veni, vidi, Remco. The Belgian rider took over Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl’s leadership baton from his teammate Julian Alaphilippe, who crashed out of contention with 62 kilometres to go, and pulled off an amazing solo ride to win Liège-Bastogne-Liège on his maiden participation in La Doyenne. No one could match Evenepoel’s impressive attack atop the legendary Côte de la Redoute, and all the attempts to bring him back afterwards turned out fruitless. Intermarché-Wanty Gobert’s Quinten Hermans was the quickest in the sprint of the chase group, with Jumbo-Visma’s Wout van Aert coming home third. It’s the first time Liège-Bastogne-Liège has had a full Belgian podium since 1976.

172 riders took the start on the 108th edition of Liège-Bastogne-Liège at 10:21 as there were three non-starters: Tiesj Benoot (Jumbo-Visma), Jai Hindley (Bora-Hansgrohe), and Kamiel Bonneu (Sport Vlaanderen). It was five kilometres into the race that Lotto-Soudal’s Sylvain Moniquet first opened up a gap. He was quickly joined by his teammate Harm Vanhoucke, Groupama-FDJ’s Bruno Armirail, Uno-X’s Jacob Madsen and TotalEnergies’ Fabien Doubey. Many groups tried to follow their example, yet failed to do so as Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl didn’t grant any leeway to the attackers until kilometer 40, when Pau Miquel (Equipo Kern Pharma), Baptiste Planckaert (Intermarché-Wanty Gobert), Paul Ourselin (TotalEnergies), Marco Tizza, Kenny Molly and Luc Wirtgen (Bingoal Pauwels Sauces) managed to go clear and finally reached the front of the race 17 kilometres later to establish a 11-strong breakaway. Meanwhile, Sport Vlaanderen’s Gilles de Wilde tried to counter as well, but failed to bridge back and gave up atop the Côte de la Roche-en-Ardenne (km 76,8).

A huge crash gave knocked the race into shape
Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl, Jumbo-Visma, Movistar Team and Bahrain Victorious took turns at the helm of the bunch to keep tabs on the breakaway, which registered a maximum gap of 6’30” clocked at kilometer 101, as the race went past Bastogne. The array of climbs between the kilometers 165 and 190 split the break by half, as Vanhoucke’s pace uphill proved too high for Miquek, Planckaert, Tizza, Molly and Madsen. Meanwhile, the bunch cut the gap down to 3’00” atop the Côte de la Haute-Levée (km 187). It was in a small descent on the way to the Col du Rosier (km 201,2), with 62 kilometres to go and Bahrain Victorious leading the way, that a huge crash happened in the bunch, making 30 riders hit the deck and forcing many more to stop. Amongst the most affected, pre-race favourites like Julian Alaphilippe (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl), Romain Bardet (Team DSM) or Wilco Kelderman (Bora-Hansgrohe). The peloton was reduced to 60 riders for a minute, until being reinforced by several groups that had been caught on the wrong side of the cut provoked by the crash. This is how Alejandro Valverde (Movistar Team), Sergio Higuita (Bora-Hansgrohe) or Bauke Mollema (Trek-Segafredo) came back to contention.

Evenepoel’s unmatchable acceleration
As has happened many times in the history of this race, the Côte de la Redoute (km 227,7) was key on the outcome of this edition. Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl led the reduced pack both on its approach and its steeper ramps. Near the summit, with just 29 kilometres to go, Remco Evenepoel (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl) made good use of the work deployed by his teammates Louis Vervaeke and Mauri Vansevenant to put on an impressive acceleration – an no one had an answer to it. The Belgian rider went on to catch Bruno Armirail (Groupama-FDJ), who by then was the last man standing from the day’s breakaway, with 22 kilometers to go. They began the Côte de la Roche-aux-Faucons (km 243,8) with 30” on the pack, where many teams were contributed to keep tabs on the move. Evenepoel dropped Armirail early on the climb and undertook his successful solo raid to victory. The many attacks that happened behind were not good enough to bring his gap down, as he indeed came home with a comfortable 48-second advantage on the first chase group.
