Romain Bardet: „There are always strong riders and a big battle on Paris-Nice“

After two years essentially focused on the Giro, Romain Bardet has put the general classification of the Tour de France back in his sights for 2023 and thus returns to Paris-Nice with this in mind. Ten years after his debut in the Race to the Sun, the Frenchman will ride for the first time in the DSM jersey of the Dutch team, with which he has been since the 2021 season. Fifth in the general classification in 2019, he will have the opportunity to measure himself against Jonas Vingegaard and Tadej Pogacar this year.

Romain Bardet, how do you feel after the opening races that launched your season in the south of France?
I think this was the best programme to allow me to prepare for Paris-Nice, the best way to arrive in shape. I am not yet at my peak, but my legs are good. I have to get over a little virus which weakened me last weekend, but it will pass quickly. I had a mechanical problem in the Ardèche, which prevented me from going for the win, and the next day on the Drôme Classic, I felt that I was lacking a bit of punch in the run to the finish. But despite the cold, it was still a very intense race, and this work was helpful.

Do you remember the 2013 Paris-Nice and your sixth place in Brioude, which is still your best result on a stage?
Indeed, that goes back a long way. It was my second professional year, but above all, the one in which I genuinely discovered the elite level. Everything was new, and I understood too well that I was entering another dimension. The conditions were difficult for the Brioude stage, but I was up to it. I quickly realised that Paris-Nice was a very demanding race.

What do you mean?
I think it’s the toughest one-week race on the entire calendar. It is right behind the big tours. It is not where I feel most at ease, but there is always a good fight. The tension is constant. It’s a difficult race, with always a steep stage early in the week, then there is the wind factor, then a time trial, and then the final weekend with a series of climbs. The Dauphiné is easier for me because the ascent is more progressive. And Tirreno-Adriatico has more days reserved for the sprinters, so it is not as hard.

Have you made this Paris-Nice an intermediate objective?
More than anything else, it is an essential race in the build-up to my season. Getting my bearings with a new group will be one of the challenges. I spent some time with my teammates in training. We have excellent young riders and real talents. Casper Van Iden and Pavel Bittner are more sprinter-punchers. They need to get their teeth into it. And Max Poole is only 19 years old, but he is a great climber in the making. He fell last Sunday, and I still hope he can be with us so that he can dive into the deep end.

The Col de la Couillole stage will be the big event, but have you been able to study the route in detail?
First, I will make a reconnaissance ride of the opening stage, which could be good. Then, the team time trial is a double-edged sword because of the armadas that will be present. As for the rest, I know the sector very well of the last three stages, and I can tell you that the La Colle-sur-Loup ascent is tremendously difficult, and you can’t be off that day. As for the La Couillole climb, I have already ridden it several times, and I did it again last week.

As a general classification rider, is it realistic to aim for victory with favourites like Jonas Vingegaard and Tadej Pogacar?
We’ll see. They’ve been flying since the start of the season. And they are also with some big teams, that’s for sure. But whatever happens, there are always strong riders and a big battle in Paris-Nice. So, I still go there saying I will ride my race. I have to rely on my legs first and my form.
Historical series: trial balloons

Stage race organizers sometimes innovate in the way they run time trials. This year, Paris-Nice is experimenting with a special style of team time trial, with the times achieved by each rider being used for the day’s classification. An individual time trial run by teams, in short, is a strange idea. But the history of cycling is not lacking in unusual attempts at time trials. The official website of Paris-Nice offers an overview of the most creative initiatives: the „separate starts“ in the 1920s; the preface of the 1988 Tour; or, closer to our time, the chrono-pursuit raced by women in Marseille in 2017, etc.

Jai Hindley zeigt sich angriffslustig in der Ausreißergruppe auf der Sierra Nevada Etappe der Vuelta

Vor dem letzten Ruhetag, führte die heutige Königsetappe hinauf in die Sierra Nevada. Das große Finale erfolgte am Hoya de la Mora, dem fast 20 km langen Schlussanstieg, der 2,500 Meter über dem Meeresspiegel liegt. Bei sommerlichen Temperaturen und in der dünnen Höhenluft der Sierra Nevada kämpften die Ausreißer am Ende um den Tagessieg. Kurz nach dem Start ging Wilco Kelderman leider zu Boden, konnte sich aber mit hilfe von Jonas Koch und Matteo Fabbro schnell wieder dem Peloton anschließen. In der Zwischenzeit formierte sich eine große Ausreißergruppe zu der sich wenig später auch Jai Hindley gesellte. Im letzten Renndrittel wurde immer wieder aus der Spitzengruppe heraus attackiert und im finalen Anstieg gelang es Jai in die erste Verfolgergruppe zu kommen. Der entscheidende Angriff kam, als T. Arensman sich von dieser Gruppe löste und letztendlich die Etappe für sich entschied. Jai beendete die Etappe als Achter, 1:55 Minuten hinter dem Tagessieger und rückte damit um drei Plätze auf den 10. Rang in der Gesamtwertung vor. Der Australier ist jetzt der best-platzierte BORA-hansgrohe Fahrer im Gesamtklassement, während Teamkollege Wilco Kelderman auf Platz 14 liegt. Morgen gibt es den letzten Ruhetag bevor die Vuelta in West Andalusien weitergeht.

Reaktionen im Ziel
„Heute wären zwei Szenarien möglich gewesen, entweder einen Tag für die Ausreißer oder einen großen Kampf um die Gesamtwertung. Ich wusste, dass es eine gute Gelegenheit war, zu versuchen, eine Ausreißergruppe zu bilden, vor allem wegen der langen Bergankunft in großer Höhe. Solche Anstiege liegen mir normalerweise sehr gut, wenn ich in guter Form bin. Es war gut, vorne zu sein und um den Sieg zu kämpfen und es richtig krachen zu lassen. Leider hatte ich nicht die Beine, die ich mir erhofft hatte.“- Jai Hindley

„Leider ist Wilco schon früh nach 6 km gestürzt. Trotzdem ging das Rennen vorne natürlich weiter und Matteo und Jonas haben auf ihn gewartet, um ihn zu unterstützen. Es hat circa 30 km gedauert um ihn wieder zurück zum Feld zu bringen, weil es im Feld ein sehr hohes Tempo gab. Das hat unwahrscheinlich viel Kraft gekostet und er ist leider aus den ersten Zehn in der Gesamtwertung herausgefallen. Mittlerweile hatten wir auch Jai in der Spitzengruppe und er hat eine super Leistung gezeigt. Er hat heute wirklich hart um ein Top Ergebnis gekämpft und wurde damit mit einer Top-10-Platzierung im Gesamtklassement belohnt.“- Jens Zemke

Arensman conquers Sierra Nevada, Evenepoel defends La Roja

The highest summit finish of La Vuelta 22 hosted a brutal showdown with an all out battle on the slopes of Sierra Nevada. The young Dutchman Thymen Arensman (Team DSM) tamed the 22.3km long ascent after he spent the whole stage on the offense. He was the only rider from the breakaway who was able to resist Enric Mas (Movistar), 2nd, and Miguel Angel Lopez (Astana Qazaqstan), 3rd. Remco Evenepoel (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl) was under pressure early on the climb. He managed to retain La Roja but he lost time to Mas, Lopez, as well as Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma). Ahead of the final week, the Slovenian 3-time winner of La Vuelta trails by 1’34’’ and Mas follows with a gap of 2’01’’.
On the eve of the final rest day of La Vuelta 22, the peloton wrap up week 2 with a massive showdown on the slopes of Sierra Nevada, with a summit finish set at 2,512m of altitude. 145 riders start from Martos to face the “queen stage”.

A massive breakaway
The battle for the break is on from the start, with Rohan Dennis among the first attackers. Primoz Roglic’s Australian teammate is very involved in making the break. A group of 29 riders eventually gets away on the first ascent of the day, the cat-3 Puerto del Castillo (summit at km 33.8).
Jumbo-Visma have another rider at the front, Sam Oomen. The group also contains two Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl (Fausto Masnada, Louis Vervaeke); several stage winners of La Vuelta 22 – Richard Carapaz (Ineos Grenadiers), Jay Vine (Alpecin-Deceuninck), Mads Pedersen (Trek-Segafredo) and Marc Soler (UAE Team Emirates) -; the winner of the Giro 2022, Jai Hindley (Bora-Hansgrohe) and GC contenders such as Team DSM’s Thymen Arensman (11th, 9’14’’)

AG2R Citroën and Jumbo-Visma up the ante
Remco Evenepoel’s teammates are willing to let the gap increase. Ben O’Connor’s AG2R Citroën react when the gap hits 6’35’’ halfway through the stage. Lawson Craddock (BikeExchange-Jayco) goes solo at the front. He faces the ascent of the cat-1 Alto del Purche (9.1km at 7.6%, km 110.4) with a gap of 1’15’’ to his chasers.
Jay Vine catches him just before the summit to tighten his stranglehold on the polka-dot jersey. More riders bridge across to make it a 12-man group towards the final ascent of the day. Meanwhile, Jumbo-Visma up the ante in the peloton.

An all out battle from the bottom of Sierra Nevada
Marc Soler (UAE Team Emirates) goes solo at the front just ahead of the climb up Sierra Nevada (22.3km at 6.9%). The GC group explodes with more than 20km to go. Only Evenepoel, Roglic, Enric Mas (Movistar), Miguel Angel Lopez (Astana Qazaqstan) et O’Connor restent ensemble.
Soler still leads the way into the last 10km, while Arensman sets off in pursuit. Behind them, Lopez attacks with 11km to go and gets back to David De la Cruz, who was part of the breakaway. Mas also joins them.

Roglic attacks, Evenepoel tries to limit his losses
Evenepoel has to chase himself while Arensman gets back to Soler and drops him into the last 7km of ascent. He still is 1’25’’ ahead of Mas and Lopez. Evenepoel controls the gap to around 25’’ but he can’t react when Roglic attacks just ahead of the final kilometre.
Arensman resists until the line, 1’23’’ ahead of Mas. Lopez finishes 2’’ further down. Roglic follows with a gap of 1’44’’ and Evenepoel crosses the line 36’’ after Mas. The stage is set for a nail biting final week to Madrid.

Unforgettable victory in home soil for Andreas Leknessund

Team DSM’s Andreas Leknessund pulled off a masterpiece he will never forget to win the final stage and the GC of the 2022 Arctic Race of Norway. The Norwegian rider went clear from the peloton with a hundred kilometres to go and proved to be the strongest in the final circuit of Trondheim, holding off all the attempts to bring him back and landing a solo victory that subsequently awarded him the overall win ahead of Hugo Houle (Israel-PremierTech) and Nicola Conci (Alpecin-Deceuninck). It’s the first time a Norwegian rider triumphs in this event since the victory of Thor Hushovd on its first edition, back in 2013.
108 riders took the start on the 4th stage of the 2022 Arctic Race of Norway, which began and finished in Trondheim after covering 159,1 kilometres, at 14:20. One DNS: Intermarché-Wanty Gobert’s Sven Eryk Bystrøm, who fell ill overnight and sat out of the race giving up his hard-earned 4th position on the GC. It was a hectic start, with many moves as all of the event’s prizes and honors were undecided or straight away up for grabs, as the 400 liters of Mack Brewery products awarded to the winner of the first intermediate sprint in Spongdal (IS, km 26). Israel-Premier Tech led out, yet former GC leader Axel Zingle (Cofidis) proved the fastest of the contenders and took three important bonus seconds ahead of Quinten Hermans (Intermarché-Wanty Gobert) and Kévin Vauquelin (Arkéa-Samsic), who closed in to Midnight Sun jersey wearer Victor Lafay (Cofidis) by two and one seconds respectively.

Three-man breakaway up the road
Virtually every rider from every team wanted to break away, and that made for a thrilling first hour of racing until Andreas Leknessund (Team DSM), Fabian Greiller (TotalEnergies) and Alessandro Verre (Arkéa-Samsic) managed to jump clear 65 kilometres into the stage. The trio build a buffer that reached 2’15” atop Løvset (Cat 2, km 78,7), first crowned by Greiller. Cofidis drove the bunch to keep the gap steady as Leknessund led the way through Ståggån (Cat 2, km 101,9).

Leknessund takes off
It was with 37 kilometres to go that the riders entered the final circuit in Trondheim: a 8,1-kilometre loop with a steep climb to Tylhot Tower (1,4 km at 7,7%) to be crested 5,8 kilometres from the finish line. As soon as the road pitched upwards, Leknessund took off from his companions to reach the summit of Tylhot Tower (Cat 2, km 128,9) solo, holding a 1’10” gap on a bunch where attacks began to take place. A three-man group with Martin Urianstad (Uno-X), Embret Svestad-Bardseng (Team Coop) and Thomas Gloag (Trinity Racing) went clear atop the climb and caught up with Verre and Greiller after the second crossing of the finish line with 24 kilometres to go. They were quickly swept up by the pack when the race finally took shape.

Alpecin-Deceuninck comes close as Cofidis loses its lead
Nicola Conci (Alpecin-Deceuninck) unfurled a ferocious acceleration to pass the summit of the second climb to Tylhot Tower (Cat 2, km 137) second to Leknessund, who was still leading the race with a 45-second buffer. The Italian rider was joined from behind by teammates Jason Osborne and Kristian Sbaragli, as well as by Hugo Houle (Israel-Premier Tech), Dries de Potter (Intermarché-Wanty Gobert), Axel Zingle (Cofidis) and Max Poole (Team DSM). The Alpecin-Deceuninck squad kept a fast tempo as Leknessund collected KOM points in Tylhot Tower (Cat 2, km 145,2) and bonus seconds on the third and fourth crossing of the finish line. Conci took off again up the final climb to Tylhot Tower (Cat 2, km 137) in a furious pursuit of Leknessund, who managed to keep him at bay. Behind, Lafay, Vauquelin and Hermans took on a late chase with the Midnight Sun jersey in mind that turned out unfruitful as all of them finished off the podium for the benefit of Conci, Houle… and the outstanding overall winner Leknessund.

Sergio Higuita fällt nach dem Tour de Pologne Zeitfahren auf Platz 8 in der Gesamtwertung zurück

Auf der vorletzten Etappe wurde ein 11,8 km langes leicht ansteigendes Einzelzeitfahren ausgetragen, bei dem entscheidende Abstände zwischen den Fahrern entstanden und angesichts der knappen Gesamtwertung es eine Vorentscheidung über den Gesamtsieg gab. Die ersten 8 Kilometer der Strecke waren leicht flach, aber auf den folgenden zwei Kilometern ging es bergauf, ehe es im Finale flach weiter zur Skistation Narciasrska Rusiński ging. Sergio Higuita, der bis dato Führende in der Gesamtwertung ging mit vier Sekunden Vorsprung gegenüber seinem nächstplatzierten Rivalen in den Kampf gegen die Uhr und erreichte das Ziel in 18:30 Minuten, 50 Sekunden hinter dem Tagessieger T. Arensman. Er liegt damit vor der morgigen Sprintetappe auf dem 8. Platz im Gesamtklassement. Leider hatte Jordi Meeus Pech und ging auf der Strecke zu Boden. Nach ersten ärztlichen Mitteilungen blieb er die ganze Zeit bei Bewusstsein und wurde für weitere Untersuchungen ins Krankenhaus gebracht.

Reaktionen im Ziel
„Ich habe heute ein solides Zeitfahren abgeliefert. Die letzten zwei Zeitfahren, die ich bestritten habe, waren ziemlich gut, und ich glaube, dass ich in dieser Disziplin jedes Mal besser werde. Mit dem 8. Platz sind wir immer noch in den Top-10 in der Gesamtwertung, und mit einem Etappensieg in der Tasche können wir mit unserer bisherigen Polen-Rundfahrt zufrieden sein. Wiebes is the absolute queen of sprints

Lorena Wiebes (Team DSM) displayed again her pure speed as she sprinted to a second stage win in the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift, in Saint-Dié-des-Vosges, four days after she took the first Maillot Jaune in Paris. The Dutch sprinter put a significant distance between her and the World champion Elisa Balsamo (Trek-Segafredo), 2nd ahead of Marianne Vos (Jumbo-Visma), who slightly increased her GC lead with the time bonuses. On the longest stage of the race, the early attackers survived until they were caught inside the last 3km. They will try again to upset the peloton on Friday with a rolling course towards Rosheim.
The longest route of the week doesn’t deter early attackers. The battle is on from the start in Bar-le-Duc and it takes almost 30km for the situation to settle with a 4-woman breakaway at the front.

A big battle and a significant gap
Emily Newsom (EF Education-Tibco-SVB) and Anya Louw (AG Insurance-NXTG) launch the key move at km 13.5. With other teams, and most notably Human Powered Health, willing to make the break, they struggle to open up a significant gap.
Victoire Berteau (Cofidis) and Antri Christoforou (Human Powered Health) join them at the front and the gap increases to a minute at km 27. It reaches a maximum of 3’45’’ atop the first climb of the day, the cat-4 Côte de Pagny-la-Blanche-Côte (km 61.4), where Berteau takes the first QOM points of the day.

Norsgaard Bjerg abandons after a crash
Team DSM are the first team involved in controlling the gap, with Franziska Koch. Leah Thomas (Trek-Segafredo) also moves to the front of the bunch as the race enters the last 50km with a gap of 2’ from the early attackers to the peloton.
A mass crash involves a few dozens of riders with 46km to go. Among them, Emma Norsgaard Bjerg (Movistar) is forced to abandon. Lotte Kopecky and Chantal van den Broek-Blaak (SD Worx) are also involved, with the latter suffering an injury to the right arm.

Wiebes doubles up
The situation returns to normal and the gap drops down to under 1 minute inside the last 25km. Berteau attacks with 21.5km to go, towards the Bonus point of the day. Only Christoforou can follow her, while Louw and Newsom are reeled in by the pack.
Berteau and Christoforou hold on to a gap of 40’’ with 10km to go, and 20’’ under the 5km to go banner. They are eventually caught inside the last 3km. Trek-Segafredo try to set Elisa Balsamo for the win but Elisa Longo Borghini takes a wrong turn inside the last kilometre. It doesn’t unsettle Wiebes, who takes off to victory with two bike lengths between her and Balsamo. Vos rounds out the podium.

Wiebes fly to the first Maillot Jaune

History has been written on the Champs-Élysées as the superfast Lorena Wiebes (Team DSM) and the peloton of the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift covered the first stage of the race this Sunday, in Paris.
After 81.6km of fast racing, the Dutch sprinter took her 16th victory of the year… the most historic, claiming the Maillot Jaune of leader of the Tour ahead of her compatriot Marianne Vos (Jumbo-Visma).
Lotte Kopecky (SD Worx) rounded out the podium of the day. The race will now set off towards the East, heading to the finish atop La Super Planche des Belles Filles next Sunday.

The peloton started from the Eiffel Tower in the early afternoon with 144 trailblazers to pave the way for the first Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift. Attackers immediately set off, with riders from EF-Education-Tibco-SVB and Human Powered Health showing their intent to make the break. But the succession of attacks and counter-attacks make it hard to open a gap.

First break and first sprint
After 18 km of racing around the Champs-Élysées, Mischa Bredewold (Parkhotel Valkenburg) attacks. She is quickly joined by Emily Newsom (EF Education-Tibco-SVB) and they open the first significant gaps.
With 8 laps (54.4km) to go, the leading duo are 25’’ ahead of Morgane Coston (Arkea), trying to chase them down, and 40’’ ahead of the bunch. But the peloton accelerate towards the first intermediate sprint (km 34.8). The attackers are reeled in and Marianne Vos (Jumbo-Visma) takes the first points of the day against Lorena Wiebes (Team DSM).

First KOM
Pauline Allin (Arkea) launches a new move inside the last 45km. With many counter-attackers trying to join her, the gap is minimal. Henrietta Christie (Human Powered Health) eventually makes it a 2-woman breakaway, 15’’ ahead of the bunch. But the peloton accelerate again towards the second intermediate sprint, dominated by Lotte Kopecky (SD Worx).

Into the last 25km, Femke Markus (Parkhotel Valkenburg) and Anne Dorthe Ysland (Uno-X) attack and Marta Lach (Ceratizit-WNT) joins them at the front of the race. They battle it out on the only categorised ascent of the day with the peloton chasing hard behind them. Markus takes the 2 KOM points at the summit and the first polka-dot jersey is hers.

First abandon and first Maillot Jaune
The peloton immediately get back to the attackers… And Gladys Verhulst (Le Col-Wahoo) goes on the move, alone. She opens a gap of 50’’ ahead of the final 10km while Alana Castrique (Cofidis) suffers a crash and abandons the race.

Verhulst is stil 30’’ ahead of her rivals when she enters the final lap. She is eventually caught 2.3km away from the line. Ellen van Dijk (Trek-Segafredo) powers to the front but Team DSM and Jumbo-Visma move past her to set a magnificent sprint between the icon Vos and the rising star Wiebes, who narrowly takes the first Maillot Jaune.

Frankreich dominiert in Lienz: Pinot gewinnt die Etappe, Bardet die #TotA

Eine spektakuläre Schlussetappe mit Start und Ziel in Lienz bescherte dem Franzosen Romain Bardet den Gesamtsieg bei der Tour of the Alps 2022 und seinem Landsmann Thibaut Pinot eine gelungene Revanche nach der Enttäuschung von Kals am Großglockner. Bilbao scheitert am Aufstieg nach Stronach und beschert Frankreich einen denkwürdigen Tag
Vielleicht war es einfach Schicksal und so vorherbestimmt, bei einem Rennen, das die #LiveUphill-Botschaft in sich trägt. Im Leben wie auf den Straßen des Radsports darf man nie aufgeben, denn man weiß nie, was der nächste Tag bringen wird. So war es auch auf der fünften, letzten und entscheidenden Etappe der Tour of the Alps 2022 über 114,5 km von Lienz nach Lienz.

Es war ein Finale mit einem spannenden Drehbuch, das zwei französische Talente nach schwierigen Jahren wieder auf die große Bühne gebracht hat. Romain Bardet und Thibaut Pinot sind zwei unterschiedliche, aber ähnliche Talente: beide sind Etappenfahrer des französischen Radsports, beide sind voller Erwartungen und Ansprüche, beide können diese aber nur zeitweise erfüllen. Und doch ist das Schicksal in der Lage, Tage der Revanche anzubieten, wenn man es am wenigsten erwartet.
Dass sich Romain Bardet in einer hervorragenden Form befindet, zeigte sich bereits am Montag im Ziel in Primiero/S. Martino di Castrozza und bestätigte sich auch in den folgenden Etappen, aber der Athlet des Teams DSM fuhr die ersten vier Etappen ohne zu attackieren. Er brauchte nur eine Attacke am schwierigen Stronach-Anstieg, um den bis heute Morgen Führenden der Gesamtwertung, Pello Bilbao (Bahrain-Victorious), zu distanzieren und das Grüne Melinda-Trikot im Ziel in Lienz zu übernehmen.
Es war ein Sieg der Kraft und der Cleverness, den er zusammen mit seinem Teamkollegen Thymen Arensman, der den dritten Platz in der Gesamtwertung holte, feiern konnte. Damit dürfte mit dem Franzosen auch beim Giro d’Italia zu rechnen sein. Ebenfalls auf dem Podium landete Michael Storer (Groupama-FDJ), Zweiter mit einem Rückstand von nur 14″ auf Bardet, was zeigte, dass diese Tour of the Alps 2022 bis zum Ende offen war.

Aber der Tag in Lienz am Freitag, den 22. April 2022, sprach auch in Bezug auf den Etappenerfolg Französisch. Wir hatten ihn nach dem Zieleinlauf in Kals am Großglockner unter Tränen auf dem Asphalt zurückgelassen, nachdem er auf dem letzten Kilometer von Miguel Angel Lopez überholt worden war. Es schien die x-te Verhöhnung einer oft unglücklichen Karriere zu sein, aber stattdessen wollte das Schicksal Thibaut Pinot belohnen, der zum ersten Mal seit seinem Sieg auf dem Col du Tourmalet bei der Tour de France 2019 wieder erfolgreich war.

Er hatte es heute Morgen beim Start in Lienz gesagt: „Ich werde es heute wieder versuchen“, und so war es auch. Diesmal konnte nicht einmal ein mechanisches Problem zu Beginn des Stronach-Anstiegs die Revanchegelüste des Franzosen stoppen, der bereits auf den Rampen der zweiten Bergwertung des Tages versuchte, David de La Cruz loszuwerden, ihn aber erst am Schlussanstieg abhängen konnte und schließlich die Arme in den Himmel recken durfte.
Immer versuchen, niemals aufgeben. Dies ist der Geist, den die Tour of the Alps mit ihrem Motto #LiveUphill fördert. Romain Bardet und Thibaut Pinot haben das perfekt umgesetzt. Chapeau.

GEGEN DIE STEIGUNGEN, DEN REGEN UND DIE KÄLTE

Die Ausreißer des Tages brauchten 26 km, um sich abzusetzen. Fünfzehn Fahrer setzten sich anfangs ab, doch schon bald, als sie die erste Passage des Bannbergs passierten, waren es nur noch fünf: De La Cruz, Pinot, Arrieta Lizarraga (Equipo Kern Pharma), Iturria Segurola (Euskatel-Euskadi) und Traeen (Uno-X Pro Cycling Team).
Die GC-Gruppe wich zurück und die Ausreißer gewannen Kilometer für Kilometer an Boden. Auf der anschließenden Abfahrt waren die beiden stärksten Fahrer allein an der Spitze, bis sie mit 12.30 Vorsprung auf die Führenden der Gesamtwertung den Schlussanstieg nach Stronach erreichten.
Nachdem er auf den ersten Rampen ein mechanisches Problem überwunden hatte, konnte sich Pinot von seinem Begleiter absetzen, aber der Spanier konnte sich auf der Abfahrt wieder fangen.
Beim Aufstieg zur Lienzer Zettersfeldbahn kam beim Franzosen aber die Lust zur Revanche. Mit einem scharfen Sprint weniger als 300 Meter vor dem Ziel ließ er de La Cruz zurück, während ein großartiger Lennard Kämna das Tagespodium mit 1.46 Minuten Rückstand vervollständigte.

Der Kampf um die Gesamtwertung wurde am anspruchsvollen Stronach-Anstieg entschieden, der 3,1 km lang ist und einen Durchschnitt von 12,4% aufweist. Das Team DSM lag von den ersten Rampen an in Führung, wobei Thymen Arensman das Tempo vorgab und Pello Bilbao sofort in Schwierigkeiten brachte.
Bardet, Storer und Arensman setzten sich ab und konnten am letzten Anstieg 39 Sekunden Vorsprung auf Bilbao herausfahren, um die drei Stufen auf dem Podium zu erklimmen.

Der Niederländer Thymen Arensman (Team DSM) gewann das Würth Modyf Trikot des besten Jungfahrers, während sich Thibaut Pinot das rote PMG Sport Trikot des besten Sprinters sichern konnte. Das hellblaue Gruppo Cassa Centrale Trikot für den besten Kletterer ging an den Norweger Torstein Traeen (Uno-X)

„Zuerst habe ich nicht an einen möglichen Erfolg in der Gesamtwertung geglaubt, aber heute haben wir uns gegenseitig im Team angeschaut und beschlossen, es zu versuchen. Der Schlussanstieg war der härteste der ganzen Woche, aber das Ergebnis entschädigt für die ganze Arbeit“, sagte Bardet.
„Ich wollte Bilbao nicht bis zum Schlusssprint mitnehmen, deshalb habe ich mich entschieden, zusammen mit Arensman zu pushen: wir sind zusammen auf dem Podium gelandet, es lief besser als erwartet.“
„Ich und Thibaut kennen uns schon lange, ich freue mich für ihn, heute ist ein großer Tag für den französischen Radsport und ein sehr gutes Zeichen für unsere Saison.“
„Die Tour of he Alps hat mich auch in diesem Jahr in technischer und organisatorischer Hinsicht beeindruckt, eine Meinung, die ich mit dem gesamten Team teile. Es ist ein wunderschönes Rennen, und außerdem ist es für Kletterer wie mich sehr geeignet. Und wenn ich eines Tages umziehen sollte, könnten diese Gebiete wirklich meine Heimat werden“.

Thibaut Pinot: „Das ist ein wirklich sehr wichtiger Sieg für meine Karriere, an einem unglaublichen Tag. Heute war es eine klassische ‚verrückte‘ Etappe, aber ich bin froh, nach so langer Zeit wieder zu gewinnen.“
„Die Tour of he Alps ist ein Rennen mit schönen Bergen und Landschaften, mit sehr schönen Zielankünften und einer fantastischen Atmosphäre. Es ist auf jeden Fall mein Lieblingsrennen, und ich mag das Konzept mit den kurzen, schnellen Etappen sehr.“
„Gestern war ich sehr enttäuscht, ich war nach langer Zeit endlich wieder so nah am Sieg dran und dachte fast, dass ich es nie wieder schaffen würde. Wenn ich so darüber nachdenke, hat mir der gestrige zweite Platz die Augen geöffnet und mich erkennen lassen, dass ich noch einige Karten ausspielen kann, dass ich noch gewinnen kann. Ich kann zwar immer noch mehr geben, aber ich bin wieder konkurrenzfähig.“

FÜNF JAHRE OHNE SCARPONI: TESFATSION ÜBERNIMMT DAS TRIKOT DES KÄMPFERISCHSTEN FAHRERS
An diesem Tag vor fünf Jahren, gerade zurück von der Tour of he Alps, bei der er die erste Etappe Innsbruck-Hungerburg gewonnen hatte, ereilte Michele Scarponi im Training auf den Straßen seiner Heimat ein tragisches Schicksal.
Die Erinnerung an den Champion aus den Marken ist untrennbar mit der Tour of the Alps verbunden, er bleibt in den Herzen aller Radsportfans. Heute wurde beim euroregionalen Etappenrennen das Gedenken an Michele an der Startlinie zelebriert, wo ein ihm gewidmetes Sondertrikot an Natnael Tesfatsion (Drone Hopper-Androni) verliehen wurde: Tesfatsion wurde zum kämpferischsten Fahrer dieser Ausgabe gewählt wurde.

Das Trikot von Alé Cycling trägt auf der Brust auch den Namen der Michele-Scarponi-Stiftung, die sich im Namen des verstorbenen Weltmeisters für die Sicherheit im Straßenverkehr einsetzt. Das Trikot wurde auf der Bühne in Lienz von Micheles Familie, vertreten durch seinen Bruder Marco und seine Mutter Flavia, und von Alessia Piccolo, CEO von APG, dem Unternehmen, das die Marke Alè Cycling besitzt, überreicht

Lennard Kämna Dritter auf einer brutalen Abschlussetappe bei der Tour of the Alps

Nicht nur das Streckenprofil, sondern auch heftiger Regen setzte heute den Fahrern auf der letzten Etappe der Tour of the Alps zu. Nach einem erbitterten Kampf um die Gruppe setzten sich letztlich 15 Fahrer vom Feld ab und für BORA – hansgrohe war es einmal mehr Lennard Kämna der den Sprung in die Gruppe des Tages schaffte. Am vorletzten Anstieg fielen zuerst 9 Fahrer aus der Spitze zurück, bevor sich Pinot und De la Cruz entscheidend von den verbliebenen Fahrern um Kämna lösen konnten. Kämna gelang es am letzten Berg seine Gefährten abzuschütteln, während an der Spitze Pinot auch De la Cruz abhängen konnte. Obwohl der Spanier in der Abfahrt noch einmal aufschließen konnte, sicherte sich Pinot am Ende einen souveränen Sieg. Lennard erreichte dahinter als Dritter das Ziel, sichtlich gezeichnet von den Strapazen. Im Kampf um den Gesamtsieg distanzierte R. Bardet am letzten Anstieg gemeinsam mit T. Arensman und M. Storer den bis dato führenden P. Bilbao. Damit schnappte der Franzose sich am Ende die Gesamtwertung. Cian Uijtdebroeks fuhr ebenfalls erneut ein starkes Rennen und erreichte das Etappenziel in einer Gruppe um M. Landa. Damit beendet er die Tour of the Alps 2022 auf dem 16. Gesamtrang.

Von der Ziellinie
„Es war echt brutal von Beginn an. Als ich endlich in der Gruppe war, hatte ich schon wieder richtig viele Körner gelassen und am zweiten Berg war es dann wie ein Ausscheidungsfahren. Mir fehlt immer noch ein Stück zu meiner Bestform und darum war es nicht möglich, an Pinot dran zu bleiben. „Ich habe versucht, heute in die Gruppe zu kommen, aber obwohl ich es einige Male versucht habe, hat es leider nicht geklappt. Danach habe ich mich dann auf den Schlussanstieg konzentriert. Das Tempo war aber schon davor sehr hoch und ich bin etwas zu weit hinten in den Berg hineingefahren. Es gingen schnell Lücken auf und ich bin dann meinen Rhythmus gefahren, um am letzten Kilometer etwas weiter nach vorne zu kommen. Es war ein wirklich harter Tag und ein brutales Finale, aber ich bin mit meiner Leistung sehr zufrieden. Ich war wieder nicht weit zurück und in meiner Gruppe waren große Namen. Die ganze Woche war eigentlich sehr gut für mich. Ich weiß, wo ich mich noch verbessern muss, denn auf diesem Niveau kostet jeder kleine Fehler viel Energie, die am Ende fehlt. Bardet gewinnt Tour of the Alps, Gall wird 6.!

Die Abschlussetappe der Tour of the Alps in Osttirol brachte bei widrigen Witterungsbedingungen einen Umsturz: Während Thibaut Pinot den Etappensieg feierte, schnappte sich der Franzose Romain Bardet noch den Gesamtsieg! Felix Gall lieferte wieder ein starkes Rennen ab und feierte mit dem sechsten Gesamtplatz den größten Erfolg seiner Karriere!

Die fünfte und letzte Etappe der Tour of the Alps entwickelte sich zu einem richtigen Spektakel in Osttirol! Auf dem 114,5 Kilometer langen Teilstück mit Start am Lienzer Hauptplatz und Ziel bei der Zettersfeld Talstation sorgte zudem Regen für noch mehr Nervenkitzel. Vor dem Schlusstag der UCI Pro Series-Rundfahrt ging es in der Gesamtwertung knapp her, denn nicht weniger als zwölf Athleten befanden sich innerhalb von nur 20 Sekunden. Mit dabei war auch der Gesamtvierte und Lokalmatador Felix Gall, der Junioren-Weltmeister von 2015. Eine Hiobsbotschaft gab es für den 24-jährigen vom Team AG2R-Citroen vor dem Start, denn durch Stürze und Krankheiten konnte er nur noch auf zwei Helfer zählen.

Noch vor der ersten Bergwertung Bannberg setzte sich eine 20-köpfige Spitzengruppe ab. Bei dem Anstieg lösten sich aus der Spitze fünf Fahrer, mit dabei war der gestrige Etappenzweite Thibaut Pinot und Etappensieger Lennard Kämna. Das Feld hatte nach rund 40 Kilometern bereits über vier Minuten Rückstand. Über die Pustertaler Höhenstraße zersplittete die Spitze komplett und Groupama-Profi Thibaut Pinot und David de la Cruz von Astana setzten sich an die Spitze. Das Feld hatte bereits über sieben Minuten Rückstand. Da vorne alle Fahrer wegen großen Zeitrückständen im Gesamtklassment keine Rolle mehr spielten, entwickelte sich im immer kleiner werdenden Hauptfeld ein spannender Kampf.

Während Thibaut Pinot, der Tour of the Alps-Gesamtsieger von 2018, auf dem Schlussanstieg de la Cruz abhängen konnte, griffen Romain Bardet und sein DSM-Teamkollege Thymen Arensman auf der alten Iselbergstraße an. Bei diesem spektakulären Anstieg mit vielen Zuschauern konnte der bis heute Führende Pello Bilbao nicht mehr folgen. Mit dem 8. Etappenplatz feierte Bardet, der 2016 bereits Zweiter der Tour de France wurde, in letzter Minute einen eindrucksvollen Gesamtsieg! Er gewann 14 Sekunden vor Michael Storer (Groupama-FDJ) und 16 Sekunden vor seinem DSM-Teamkollegen Arensman, dem besten Nachwuchsfahrer der Tour. Pello Bilbao (Bahrain-Victorious) rutschte noch vom Podium auf Rang vier, gefolgt von Attila Valter und Felix Gall, der schließlich 53 Sekunden Rückstand hatte.

Gall: „Traumwoche geht zu Ende!“
Der 24-jährige Osttiroler Felix Gall feierte heute den größten Erfolg seiner Karriere: „Rang sechs bei dieser Rundfahrt zählt für mich viel mehr als der Junioren-Weltmeistertitel. Ich konnte mit den besten Kletterern der Welt mithalten und bin sehr stolz auf diese Leistung. Jetzt kommen ein paar ruhigere Tage, ehe bald der Giro d’Italia, das nächste Saisonhighlight folgt.“ Sein Landsmann Hermann Pernsteiner, der die Tour of the Alps als Zwölfter beendete, freute sich auch im Ziel mit Felix: „Wir Österreicher haben uns sehr stark hier präsentiert. Felix hatte in den letzten beiden Jahren zu kämpfen, jetzt hat er den Durchbruch geschafft! Ich freue mich riesig mit ihm über dieses Ergebnis. Für mein Team ist es heute leider nicht nach Wunsch gelaufen. Leider waren einige Fahrer heute stärker als wir.“

BORA – hansgrohe geht in der Ausreißergruppe leer aus, während Felix Großschartner starke Leistung zeigt

Nach dem gestrigen rennfreien Tag ging es heute weiter in westlicher Richtung entlang der andalusischen Mittelmeerküste bevor auf den letzten 45 km die Strecke ins Landesinnere abbog. Auf den sonst flachen 190,2 km musste 19 km vor dem Ziel der 11 km lange und teilweise 9 Prozent steile Puerto de Almácha überquert werden, ehe as dann zurück ans Mittelmeer in den Zielort Rincón de la Victoria ging. Das Terrain war für die meisten Sprinter zu schwer und eine Ausreißergruppe konnte heute realistische Chance haben. Nach dem Start in Roquetas de Mar versuchten immer wieder Fahrer, unter ihnen auch Patrick Gamper und Jordi Meeus, sich abzusetzen, wurden aber schnell wieder vom Feld eingefangen. Mit noch 120 km bis zum Ziel teilte sich das Peloton in zwei Gruppen. Auch Maximilian Schachmann und Cesare Benedetti gelangen der Sprung in die erste 31-Mann starke Gruppe, die während des Tages ihren Abstand vom Feld auf 13 Minuten ausbauen konnte. Im einzigen kategorisierten Anstieg des Tages lancierte M. Storer eine entscheidende Attacke, der niemand folgen konnte. Maximilian und Cesare überquerten die Ziellinie 5:17 Minuten später auf dem 23. bzw. 24 Platz. Dahinter im Hauptfeld ging der Kampf um die Gesamtwertung weiter und es gelang Felix Großschartner bei P. Roglič zu bleiben. Der Österreicher überquerte die Ziellinie in einer starken 7-Mann Gruppe, die 37 Sekunden auf Fahrer wie Bernal und Yates gutmachte.

„Ich glaube, im Moment ist die Form nicht wirklich da. Es war nicht unbedingt schwer in die große Gruppe zu gelangen, aber ich habe mich nicht super gefühlt. Ich versuchte im letzten Anstieg vorne mitzumischen, aber die Beine waren heute einfach nicht gut genug.“ – Maximilian Schachmann

„Es war die erste Etappe nach dem Ruhetag und es gab ein hart umkämpftes Rennen. Es dauerte wieder 80 km bis eine Spitzengruppe fahren gelassen wurde. Letztendlich haben sich dann ungefähr 30 Mann gelöst und Cece und Max waren mit dabei. So waren wir erstmal in einer sehr guten Ausgangsposition, aber leider hatte Max nicht die allerbesten Beine im letzten Berg und konnte nicht um den Tagessieg mitkämpfen. Wir bauen auf die nächsten Etappen, denn da gibt’s natürlich weitere Chancen. Felix ist ein super Rennen gefahren und konnte sich in der Gruppe mit Roglič behaupten. Er hat sich gut gefühlt und wir werden sehen was wir in den nächsten Tagen noch schaffen können.“ – Steffen Radochla, Sportlicher Leiter

Storer’s double, Roglic’s near miss

Michael Storer (Team DSM) claimed another solo win in Rincon de la Victoria, at the end of stage 10 of La Vuelta 21, a few days after he dominated the climb to Balcon de Alicante. The Australian was the strongest rider from an impressive breakaway on the slopes of the Puerto de Almachar, where Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) also went for a strong attack. But the Slovenian went down on the following downhill. He quickly got back on his bike to cross the line 11’49’’ behind the stage winner. That gap meant he lost La Roja to Odd Christian Eiking (Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert Matériaux), who was also part of the breakaway. He’s the second Norwegian leader of La Vuelta, 15 years after the iconic Thor Hushovd.
After the first rest day, 171 riders return to action and they’re all wary of echelons ahead of a stage 10 entirely set on the Mediterranean coast. Attacks fly from the start but, with cross-tailwinds, the hard pace doesn’t allow anyone to get away. The peloton already cover 49.3km in the first hour and the battle for the break keeps going.

A huge gap for a huge break
The Olympic Champion Richard Carapaz (Ineos Grenadiers) himself tries – unsuccessfully – to go on the move. Splits appear in the bunch after 65km of hard racing and the green jersey Fabio Jakobsen (Deceuninck-Quick Step) is among the riders caught behind.
A group of 31 attackers eventually emerge at the front at km 87. Among them, Odd Christan Eiking (Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert Matériaux) and Guillaume Martin (Cofidis) are the main threats for La Roja, as they respectively trail by 9’10’’ and 9’39’’. Stage winners Magnus Cort Nielsen (EF Education Nippo) and Michael Storer (Team DSM) also feature in that breakaway, as well as Kenny Elissonde (Trek-Segafredo), who wore La Roja during stage 6.
The peloton take it easier and let them go. Jakobsen returns to the main bunch and the gap quickly increases: 6’ at km 103 (86km to go), and even over 10’ to enter the last 50km. That means Eiking is the virtual leader of La Vuelta 21.

Storer flies, Roglic crashes
Floris de Tier, Alex Aranburu, Jesus Herrada and Matteo Trentin attack with 35km to go. But they’re quickly caught on the first slopes of the only ascent of the day, the cat-2 Puerto de Almachar (10.9km, 4.9%). After a series of attack, Storer goes solo on the steeper slopes of the climb. Twelve minutes later, Roglic choses the same place to drop all his GC rivals.
Storer dominates the final downhill to become the second Australian rider to win two stages in a single edition of La Vuelta, after Michael Matthews did so in 2013. But Roglic crashes in a curve. He quickly gets back up, but Movistar Team’s Enric Mas and Miguel Angel Lopez catch up to him with Jack Haig (Bahrain Victorious). Felix Grossschartner (Bora-Hansgrohe), Aleksandr Vlasov (Astana-Premier Tech) and Sepp Kuss (Jumbo-Visma) also bridge the gap on the downhill.

They cross the line with a gap of 11’49’’. Odd Christian Eiking (5th of the stage, +22’’) thus becomes the second Norwegian leader of La Vuelta, 15 years after Thor Hushovd and 58’’ ahead of Guillaume Martin. Primoz Roglic is third (+2’17’’). Egan Bernal (Ineos Grenadiers) loses 37’’.
